USB mouse won't work
Hello, I have an Acer Travelmate 800 laptop, I'm running Woody, on kenel 2.6.4 and I have have problems with my USB mouse. Hotplug doesn't start it at boot time (even with /etc/init.d/hotplug restart). It is an optical mouse, so I can see that the red light remains off. This same mouse works very well on my second computer (Debian Sid, kernel 2.6.4). I don't understand why it doesn't work on my laptop. I tried "cat /dev/input/mice" and "cat /dev/psaux", but it answers only to my touchpad (synaptics, working pretty well). I have looked at the loaded modules : Module Size Used by ehci_hcd 25088 0 usbcore 101012 3 ehci_hcd soundcore 9952 0 ide_cd 39360 0 cdrom 35872 1 ide_cd ndiswrapper60792 0 ntfs 86932 0 8250 17920 0 serial_core22016 1 8250 hid is not loaded, so I did a modprobe hid,it returned no error but it still doesn't appear in my lsmod. I put hid in /etc/modules, reboot : same result. Is there another missing module ? Do I need some driver ? here is my dmesg after I boot (it seems to recognize only my touchpad): [...] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 175x65 mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice serio: i8042 AUX port at 0x60,0x64 irq 12 Synaptics Touchpad, model: 1 Firmware: 5.8 180 degree mounted touchpad Sensor: 29 new absolute packet format Touchpad has extended capability bits -> 4 multi-buttons, i.e. besides standard buttons -> multifinger detection -> palm detection input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad on isa0060/serio1 serio: i8042 KBD port at 0x60,0x64 irq 1 input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard on isa0060/serio0 [...] Can someone help me ? It's probably way off base, but are you sure that you have an ehci USB bus? When troubleshooting USB on my machines I usually compile up UHCI and OHCI as modules and try each one, one at a time. external touchscreens - for use on a laptop
Hi, this is a general question concerning touchscreens and portable laptops ... Any ideas are welcome :) I got an old Toshiba 400 portable - with a broken screen. VGA port out still works, but I'd like to experiment a bit, and I was wondering how I could hook up a touchscreen on Debian to take over all functionality of the X interface (XMMS especially, but also things like selecting files, drag and drop files, etc) Does anybody have any experience with : a) hooking up a touchscreen to a Linux laptop (probably not so different from a workstation, but since it's on a laptop, I thought it relevant to ask the question here) ? b) get the main functionality working with X - as to replace the mouse in functionality ? c) a recommendation for a model for a touchscreen ? Idealiter - I'd be hanging the portable on the wall with a WiFi card, with the touchscreen mounted on it instead of the broken LCD- as to be able to have a cheap and affordable audio streaming station for each room in my house (amplification etc would be handled by an external amplifier for each floor of my house - through the line-out of the portable) Thanks in advance :) Greetings, Frank -- --- Frank Guthorel Moriaanstraat 124 9050 Gent - Ledeberg T:09/329.49.38 - G:0495/105.776 [EMAIL PROTECTED] - www.codedor.be --- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Hi Marcos, to get USB 2.0 working on the Travelmate 800, you need to load both ehci and uhci modules. The USB-mouse then uses /dev/input/mice and the touchpad uses /dev/psaux. mischa -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I lived with it for a while because I was finishing my PhD, then moving, then my wife and I had a baby... I would show you some convoluted scripts I used to get java and ant to work in the cygwin directory structure, but all those adjustmenst were wiped. I tried compiling the acx100 0.2.0pre6 tarball and not the cvs version... I also tried compiling it versus the kernel-source package without building a kernel myself from the kernel-source package. I haven't compiled a kernel since the 2.0 cycle of kernels and I have not used debian to make a kernel package, but after reading a bit about it last night it looks like it's not too difficult. After compiling the kernel, the acx100 drivers will probably work. Because we have a 4 month old and my wife is usually working when I'm at home I only have brief (30 minute to 1 hour) periods to work on the system, but I'll give it another try this weekend and see how it goes. Re: Install Report --- Dell 8200
I've been using apm to suspend to ram and it's been working... I have not tried to suspend to disk. When the computer comes back up after being suspended often there is a flickering on the left of the screen or sometimes the whole screen is vertically offset (the lowest portion of the screen on top and the topmost below that), I usually do strl-alt-f1 and then ctrl-alt-f7 and it fixes it. I have had a problem where the lcd backlight shuts off and wont come back on when I come out of suspend, log out (and gdm restarts), or switch to a text terminal and then back to X. I had this problem under windows XP a couple times as well and am inclined to believe it's a hardware problem. The monitor always seems on the verge of going kaput on this laptop. I have a Vaio GRT170 with a native 1400x1056(or something like that) but have not found a modline that will work beyond 1280x1024. The default X background, the little black and white dumbells, have a moire effect at that resolution showing that it's not quite matching the LCD pixels. Does this sound like a difference between the nv and the nvidia drivers? I'm using the non-free nvidia kernel driver (that has to be compiled by me but is thankfully supplied by Debian) in AGP mode and get a fast full corner-to-corner screen at least. I'd like to use the free nv driver, from an esthetic point of view. I prefer "open" source, "free" as in freedom and all that, except I bought their proprietary hardware so what's the problem using their proprietary software for it? Oh well. It's not like all the buttons and things work on this nastily proprietary Vaio. I swore this worked after I installed knoppix 3.3 (with woody) later I upgraded to unstable/testing but did not try this Xconnection. Today I found out that the connection fails. I tried various things, create a new user, using a different window manager deleting .Xauth file etc, I am puzzled and the problem is I need this feature very much right now in order to use some X applications which I can only execute as a different user. Could I downgrade to woody? That would be a last desperate step before the re-installation. Thanks Uwe Brauer -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Failed to access the Debian archive
Hi all, I'm trying to install Debian on my asus s1300 machine, but I haven't been very lucky so far. I'm doing a net install I downloaded two days ago, I downloaded the following ISO: sarge-i386-businesscard.iso So far so good, burned it on an cd and started installing. Installation kicked of nicely, I presume it downloaded some files from the mirror I chose, and then Debian wanted to reboot. I agreed. The problem I stumbled upon a few times now, is when Debian runs for the first time, and "Configure apt " occurs. First the base system configuration claims not to be connected to the internet, which it is, no PPP or anything, just a router with DHCP enabled between my precious Asus and the rest of the world. Then when I choose my mirror to do the downloading from, he right away claims: "Failed to access the Debian archive", and further down the error message: "Temporary failure resolving "I tried several mirrors. Heck, I tried all in my country. Seems odd, since there was some downloading involved in the primary installation, before the rebooting, if I am not mistaking. A clue anyone? Any help would be very much appreciated, regards, Karel Brascamp -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Failed to access the Debian archive
Alex, thanks for your response. I tried your suggestion, the nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf match the ones the router knows. Yet when I try pinging them, the response is: "connect: Network is unreachable". Same happens when I try pinging my router. nslookup seems to be an "unknown command" in this twighlight zone of the Post-Boot Base Configuration. - Original Message - From: "Alex Martin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Karel Brascamp" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, April 22, 2004 9:52 PM Subject: Re: Failed to access the Debian archive > It sounds like DNS resolution is not happening. Hi Curt, Yeah, I realise it's a test version. If there's no simple workaround, I'd better do that. It's just...the asus has the burner, not the machine I'm typing on now. Re: Failed to access the Debian archive
Ok, this is something I can help with. It's time to point to different servers. Go into /etc/apt/sources.list and change the names of the servers. Here's what I've got, be aware I'm running "unstable" and yours will say "sarge" === deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib deb http://ftp.jp.debian.org/debian-non-US/ unstable/non-US main contrib non-free deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free === You can change the country code to many different ones, with DE, UK, US, JP and such major countries as certain hits. Try a few different ones to see what's reachable for you. The way to tell if your machine is working at all is to try the following: === # route Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 eth1 default 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth1 # ping 192.168.0.1 PING 192.168.0.1 (192.168.1.1): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=250 time=2.6 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=250 time=1.9 ms === This will tell you if you have a route, if you can reach your gateway, and if your network interface is functioning. Just change the IP address to the ones that match yours. Let us know how this goes. Curt- On Thursday 22 April 2004 16:08, Karel Brascamp was heard to say: > Alex, > > thanks for your response.
Do I need some driver ? here is my dmesg after I boot (it seems to recognize only my touchpad): [...] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 175x65 mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice serio: i8042 AUX port at 0x60,0x64 irq 12 Synaptics Touchpad, model: 1 Firmware: 5.8 180 degree mounted touchpad Sensor: 29 new absolute packet format Touchpad has extended capability bits -> 4 multi-buttons, i.e. besides standard buttons -> multifinger detection -> palm detection input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad on isa0060/serio1 serio: i8042 KBD port at 0x60,0x64 irq 1 input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard on isa0060/serio0 [...] Can someone help me ? external touchscreens - for use on a laptop
Idealiter - I'd be hanging the portable on the wall with a WiFi card, with the touchscreen mounted on it instead of the broken LCD- as to be able to have a cheap and affordable audio streaming station for each room in my house (amplification etc would be handled by an external amplifier for each floor of my house - through the line-out of the portable) Thanks in advance :) Greetings, Frank -- --- Frank Guthorel Moriaanstraat 124 9050 Gent - Ledeberg T:09/329.49.38 - G:0495/105.776 [EMAIL PROTECTED] - www.codedor.be ---

I didn't catch the start of the thread, but if you are using a 2.6 kernel you will need mousedev and a usb mouse module (I quite forget it's name) loaded. If you use modconf (or edit /etc/modules) to add the modules you need, then they will in future be autoloaded at boot time. Re: USB mouse won't work
Hi Marcos, to get USB 2.0 working on the Travelmate 800, you need to load both ehci and uhci modules. The USB-mouse then uses /dev/input/mice and the touchpad uses /dev/psaux. mischa

If you use modconf (or edit /etc/modules) to add the modules you need, then they will in future be autoloaded at boot time. thanks James, I put uhci_hcd in my /etc/modules and now it seems to be working : modules hid, ehci_hcd and uhci_hcd are loaded, the red light is on, and "cat /dev/input/mice" answers (with a lot of strange letters) when I mouve the mouse !
The monitor always seems on the verge of going kaput on this laptop. acpi on Compaq Evo
Hello, I have debian sid with 2.6.4 kernel on a compaq evo n610c. ACPI seems OK but power usage when on battery is very high, usefull battery time is at the most one hour after, while with windows XP I have up to 3 hours. Is there any way I can manage the power usage and improve power management with acpi on this machine.

Re: Install Report --- Dell 8200
Oh well. It's not like all the buttons and things work on this nastily proprietary Vaio. can't connect to Xserver (127.0.0.1) anymore
Hello I am completely puzzled by the following: I execute as a regular user : xhost + 127.0.0.1 then say su setenv DISPLAY 127.0.0.1:0.0 (root uses tcsh shell) Then acroread But it does not work, that is the message Error: Can't open display: 127.0.0.1:0.0 appears. Thanks Uwe Brauer

Any help would be very much appreciated, regards, Karel Brascamp
