I tried using the free nv driver, but I always ended up with a large black unusable border around the edge of the screen and a small usable X windows setup within that. I didn't try pushing it to 1600x1280 with nv... I would love to see your XF86Config-4 file and see if I can get nv to work on my system with your settings.
