XF86Config-4 option for a Wide screen notebook
Hi list, I installed Debian using KNOPPIX 3.2 on my Gateway notebook. After installing KNOPPIX I used apt-get to upgrade to unstable. The first problem that I have is that the my computer's native resoloution is 1280x854, but Xserver boots the system with 1024x780. How can I fix this problem. The graphic card is NVidia GeForce420 32MB and the driver in XF86Config is "nv". Thanks in advance, = Hooman A newbie in Linux world __ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca

With Knoppix 3.1 running from CD, I couldn't get any better resolution than 1024x768. So look around for your monitor's type and try to find a modeline for it. Re: swsusp on Debian laptop (kernel 2.4.22)
Ipsissima verba Mike Beattie: > Oooo... trident CyberBlade. Do you use any form of fb on the > console? I've had no luck with the trident support in recent 2.4 > kernels, but vesa works well... :-) Well, the trident fb driver in 2.4.20 works for me, but I don't use it as a module. I have it built in the kernel. I seem to recall that you have to enable the "experimental" prompts on the kernel build configuration to be able to compile the trident fb driver. In lilo.conf I use the following append for the fb-enabled kernel image section: video=trident:800x600,bpp=16,center,fp It works very nice. fbi, dvifb, etc. run flawlessly. Even mplayer -vo fbdev (no acceleration, though). All that being said, note now that currently I'm not using fb because of one of the swsusp issues I mentioned. As I said, when X gets confused by swsusp, sometimes I can fix it by switching to a text console and back. When using fb the card never leaves graphic mode, not even if I stop X entirely. Then this "fix" won't kick in, and I have to reboot. To disable fb I just remove the video=... append in lilo.conf. -CR -- Ceterum censeo: SCO delenda est.

I think the problem is that some module is not getting unloaded before the memory dump. Stopping services manually seems to do it right. I've never really look seriously into it, because I don't use it much: the long suspend/resume time is really the big issue for me. But don't get me wrong, I really like the swsusp idea, and I will give it another go soon. I wish I had the time to help the develpers--- even if writing code for them is probably far beyond my current abilities :-) I just doesn't feel right to sit and complain about it. Not so good pcmcia lan performance
Today a guy at work ask me to test my pcmcia nic card. We transfered a big file via NFS. We watched the "performances" with nload. The average transfer speed was between 600 and 800 kBit/s. I tried to transfer the same file from the PC on my desk (less ram and CPU) and we got about 12000KBit/s. That's a huge difference. I have a Xircom CBEM56G-100 (10/100 + modem) and I use CardBus + yenta_socket on 2.6.0-test6. I can't reboot now, as I say I'm at work :o) Is there a way to have better performance with my card? Did ifconfig say you were connected at 100mbps full duplex, or at 10mbps half duplex? If it was a hub - any other traffic could interfere - and if a switch, any traffic headed to your destination could also interfere. It's possible that the driver is just poor - as laptop nics don't tend to get stress tested like stuff that goes into servers - but it seems likely that there's something else (interrupts keeping network busy, etc.). Also - where were you transferring to - was it just between the two? Were you reading everything through nload, etc lots of factors need to be known overall, but my first guess would be either hd bottleneck (laptop hds are slower - insanely so if you haven't done some hdparm tweaking) and interrupts, with the possibility of driver imperfection. -Martin Norland

Were you running the same operating system on the desktop? And did you use exactly the same network cable for both tests? I would check to see that DMA is enabled on your drive, and use hdparm to test HD performance. It might even be the major bottleneck (laptop HDs are much slower than desktops). Finally, PCMCIA NIC cards are not fast by design if I remember correctly - they use a 16bit bus that is basically an ISA variant. A factor of 2 right there might not be a surprise. I regularly see 1100 kBits/sec on a PCMCIA wireless card on 4 year old laptop hardware (the limit is my DSL line, this is what I see when apt-get updating etc.). Cheers! Shyamal

-- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Thanks for the tip. > If you are not doing so already, try using the suspend script in the > site, make sure to configure the script first to do all the things I > mentioned. I'm using it. I think it's a really neat project. > Make sure that you go to the download page on the site to see the > current latest version. > If you need more help, tell me.
-Martin Norland -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Cheers!
