Disk i/o overloading and cpu monitoring

2004-12-27 Thread Pol
Hi all,
I am running deb/unstable with kde 3.3.1 gui on my acer
travelmate laptop (intel centrino cpu).
In the last few days, my laptop has become almost unusable
due to overloading input/output to the disk, that seems
to be triggered both by desktop applications (e.g.kpackages,
kaffeine, etc) and terminal applications entered through
the konsole terminal emulation, e.g. apt-get, that freezes
reading the database.
As I have checked out, enough free swap area seems to be
available, so no reason of such i/o is evident.
Furthermore, from the system monitor on the kde panel
displays one gets that almost 100% cpu is busy due to system
activity, while 'top' is detecting a very low cpu
activity - i cannot explain such inconsistent behaviour.
Here are my questions:
 - What can be the origin of such high i/o traffic?
 - Why do the kde panel and 'top' report such different informations?
 - How can i detect the program (system processes behind
the running desktop application) that is actually performing i/o ?

Thank you for your help

'special users' and saving sessions

2005-08-11 Thread Pol
In order to properly arrange my office tasks, i have found useful to add
several special users on my workstation, sharing the same group with the
real user.
This solution allows folder and document management to be performed by
the special users, using their customized applications (the lyx editor,
keeping track of my last opened documents; etc), their workplace being
set on distinct desktops.
I would like to know about different solutions that one may devise to
get the same result.

Anyway, not everything ok yet. Accessing to folder is through rsh
session invoking konqueror. However the rsh konqueror windows set up

is completely lost by the real user session, when logging out.
My question: is it possible to inform kde to add the rsh, while saving
the current session?

I have tried to to save the konqueror set up from within the rsh, by
entering the command:

 dcop ksmserver default saveCurrentSession
from within the konqueror terminal emulator, resulting:
 call failed

Your help is welcome
(i am using kde 3.4 with debian/unstable)

konqueror heavy swapping

2006-01-23 Thread Pol
Sometimes, when several tens tabs are open on the desktop, konqueror
(3.4) almost freeze the machine due to heavy swapping lasting about 10
minutes, as i can infer from the led monitoring the hard disk activity
By the 'top' command, one can read an average load about 20-30, while
cpu is not intesively used.

It is unknown to me the reason of that swapping, since there is a lot
of swap space avalailabe on disk.

Any help?
How to monitor konqueror activity more closely to figure out what is
happening there and possibly to tell which windows are 'guilty'?

Thank you

Hi all,

Using Juk 2.2.1 (debian/testing) I cannot access mp3 files on cdrom
As i select a file, I get: "you can only select local files"

Sadly, no info from the ~/.xsession-errors file

Probably you are right, i have not checked it out whether that is mbox
format, since my intention is to share the same folders already in use by
kmail and thunderbird. So i have tried "file->save", but resulting output
is not mbox formatted.

As an alternative solution, would it be safe to symbolic-link folders shared
by kmail and thunderbird (through the imap server)
to .kde/share/apps/knode/folders ?

Probably that could be done as part of plan to integrate kmail with knode.
Is knode yet under development, anyway?

Well, i am accustomed to mbox; moreover sometimes it happens to check mail

Do you mean that concurrent access is not managed properly by the imap

As you surely know, that do not exclude troubles due to conditions users can
produce by tinkering about their system (xorg misconfiguration, acpi wrong
set up, etc). An help on this regard could be provided by kubuntu or debian
users, as well.

So what is the real reason you are rejecting access to a user? Are you
acting on behalf of a well representative group?

I am sure the debian people are more open than you would say.

private mail to pubic forum?

2007-07-24 Thread pol
I have just noted that you have re-directed private mail from someone to
this public mailing list.

Please, provide the debian community a valid reason of such apparently
dishonest behavior

surely yes, only with less probability to get useful help, due to a little
larger differences between system settings

I am not filing a bug. In that case you are right in requiring the exact
match between system settings.
I am only asking for help by comparing users experiences. From this view,
linux users 'play the same sport'.

text file preview (dolphin - information panel)

2009-10-19 Thread Pol Hallen
Hi all :-)

Using dolphin 4.3.1 the preview of text files (in information panel) is too
small.. the charset are illegible..
Could be better see a preview of a part of text file and move it in the
information panel.
