sddm (X11) virtual Keyboard
Hello, Since the latest plasma updates when opening sddm (X11) a virtual keyboard that I never requested appears in the foreground hiding the sddm screen it is very annoying, I thought that this problem was temporary I did not react. I use sddm-maui I tried with other login screens same problem. During my tests I realized that many of the available connection screens no longer worked (ark-dusk, chili for plasma...) The current choices seem to be very limited. Should I file a bug report or can someone give me a solution to resolve this problem? Thank you. Philippe Merlin

I think it has been discussed on this list before, but I do not recall the thread name at the moment. AFAIR something was off with tablet detection, like in flipped around. I found that I can just type in my password no matter whether that virtual keyboard is there or not. You can of cause check whether the issue is reported on Debian bug tracker and report it there in case there is no report yet. I think it would be good to fix this issue before release of Debian 13 aka Trixie. Best, -- Martin - please no carbon copy to me

OTOH, since it can cause this issue, and I have no need for it on this _desktop_ system. Hi, Thanks Philippe for asking the question. This has been plaguing me for months! On Monday, February 17, 2025 10:55:32 A.M. CST Helge Reimer wrote: > Am Montag, 17. My first instinct was the ESC key, but that did nothing. > Have you tried this and is the keyboard in the foreground again the next > time you start SDDM? I hid the on-screen keyboard and rebooted, but it appeared again. In a subsequent email you asked about /etc/sddm.conf.d/kde_settings.conf. I don't have this file on my system! Strangely, I don't have any of the config locations described in the wiki. https://wiki.debian.org/SDDM -Steve signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

That would have been my next question, whether 'qt6-virtualkeyboard-plugin' or 'maliit-keyboard' is installed. Then you could remove it. But that would be the sledgehammer method. I have 'qt6-virtualkeyboard-plugin' installed and I have no problem. -- Gruß Helge

Hey, > You can of cause check whether the issue is reported on Debian bug tracker > and report it there in case there is no report yet. I think it would be > good to fix this issue before release of Debian 13 aka Trixie. There are already two open bugreports: https://bugs.debian.org/1095604 "sddm: no way to disable the virtual keyboard" https://bugs.debian.org/1091343 "sddm started showing unneeded on-screen keyboard on a laptop" "The default Plasma install uses sddm-theme-debian-breeze which correctly detects this condition and won’t show the virtual keyboard without a reason." The takeaway is that not all sddm-themes detect table/laptop correctly. Please retry with sddm-theme-debian-breeze and update the bugreports if you have any value.
