Problem with sound in KDE
Well , I know now what's the problem:) When I startx while being as a su sounds starts in KDE, but when I'm logged as a normal user there's no sound! Also when I use KDE while NOT being a su, have to execute the su command in a console and then start xmms to play mp3s. It's something to do with access/ rights isn't it? Any tips? Thanks in advance! Arts is set 'on' in control center with 'full duplex'. I found it magically came back when I logged into KDE as root, and was then always available in user sessions. Since I almost never do that, it took 6 months to find this solution... -- derek

I believe the default is 60, which can cause some problems. N.P.
Problem with XMMS
hi! My problem is that when i startx as a normal user i've to use su command in order to start playing mp3s in XMMS. I've to enter both commands in a console. Maybe it's because i've mp3s on windows NTFS partition - i tried to change access rigths to it but I wasn't able, can user other than root use it? i've got 2.4.27 kernel. Thanks in advance for any help:) ML

The umask value is given in octal. By default, the files are owned by root and not readable by somebody else. So same as for vfat. I have an ntfs fstab entry with the following options: noauto,user,uid=0,gid=100,umask=002 and I can read files from that mount point just fine :) HS -- Mein GPG-Key ist auf meiner Homepage verfügbar: http://www.hendrik-sattler.de oder über pgp.net PingoS - Linux-User helfen Schulen: http://www.pingos.org pgplueJ5Ckog9.pgp Description: signature

If I go the route of upgrading (or trying to) my Woody 3.1.4 to 3.2.3, I'll follow this advice and report back. > Remember, this upgrades Xfree Indeed .. this would appear to be the "root of the problem". Ah .. thanks. While disappointing, I suppose that's "proper". Still - I imagine the upgrade from one or more of the 3.2.x releases might be relatively painless. I second Michael's suggestion that the possibility be considered if resources permit. I'll try to find a spare box and some time, and try some experiments ...
