I'll try. I already have 192M of swap. But on kernel 2.4.7 my system could lock
up
in case of heavy memory usage by g++ or ld. Now I am using 2.4.13, with new VM
things might be better...

But: in case of memory shortage g++ uses tmp files and in many cases can compile
even very big source. It's not good that I can't say this about ld. 500 megs of
free disk space could not help ld. :(

Dear Debian Developers,

A while ago I was asking about the standard build procedures for the GCC under debian.

Right now I have been compiling from CVS under POTATO, am working on the 3.0.3.

What are the procedures for creating a DEB from the CVS, how do you update your sourcecode from
the GCC cvs, and what tools are scripts are used.

I have seen the directory
pool/main/g/gcc-snapshot/
with snapshots for debian that you are checking in.

What is the standard procedure to download and build those snapshots?
'apt-get source packagename'

Can you please tell me where to start reading to get and compile and test the newest releases?

thanks,
Mike

Bad news. It seems that gcc-3.0.3 (debian version 3.0.3-1) still
misscompiles this thing at -O2. As for the snapshot package, I only found
it for i386 and sparc, and building gcc from source on this laptop would
be painful.

PowerPC debs for 3.0.4-2 is in incoming now. I can grab them and test
them here (TiBook G4/550 512MB) if you'd like. Also, I can build the
snapshot packages for ppc for testing purposes (this thing compiles pretty
quickly).

Well, I was wrong, too. I don't know what I did the first time, but now
gcc 3.0 seems to compile gnuchess just fine. So it seems to be 2.95
