Could you try Matthias> to install/upgrade another package, which uses alternatives? Hmm. Given this, I decided to delve deeper into this. The post install scripts are OK -- just as you said. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- update-alternatives --quiet --install /usr/bin/jar jar /usr/bin/fastjar 30 \ --slave /usr/share/man/man1/jar.1.gz jar.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/fastjar.1.gz ---------------------------------------------------------------------- So why is update alternatives failing? I looked into my /etc/alternatives dir, and I found: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- __> ll /etc/alternatives/jar* 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Jan 30 14:12 /etc/alternatives/jar -> /usr/lib/j2sdk1.3/bin/jar 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 Jan 30 14:12 /etc/alternatives/jar.1.gz -> /usr/share/man/man1/jar.j2sdk13.1.gz 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39 Jul 13 2001 /etc/alternatives/jar.ja.1.gz -> /usr/share/man/ja/man1/jar.j2sdk13.1.gz 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Jul 13 2001 /etc/alternatives/jarsigner -> /usr/lib/j2sdk1.3/bin/jarsigner 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 42 Jul 13 2001 /etc/alternatives/jarsigner.1.gz -> /usr/share/man/man1/jarsigner.j2sdk13.1.gz 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 45 Jul 13 2001 /etc/alternatives/jarsigner.ja.1.gz -> /usr/share/man/ja/man1/jarsigner.j2sdk13.1.gz ====================================================================== So the thrid party j2sdk13.1 package seems to be the culprit. The .ja.1.gz links are dangling. When I removed the dangling symlinks in /etc/alternatives, and fixed up the dpkg meta information in /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/{jar,java}, these packages configured just fine. This was a local error. manoj -- Sometimes I wonder if I'm in my right mind. Then it passes off and I'm as intelligent as ever.
