Dutch translation effort for debian-edu-doc: two questions

2014-04-24 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Dear all,

A few weeks ago I uploaded a Dutch translation of the
debian-edu-wheezy-manual as whishlist bug #742823 against
Package: debian-edu-doc.

Now that a Long term support for Debian 6.0 has been
announced (http://www.debian.org/News/2014/20140424) today,
I wonder if it would make sense to still translate the
squeeze manual into Dutch (in view of a terminating
security support on 31 May I wasn't intending to do so).

The git-repo of debian-edu-doc also has pot files for the
rosegarden manual and the audacity manual. But since these
manuals are based on program versions from the Debian Edu
Etch 3.0 release, I suppose they are really obsolete and
translating them doesn't make much sense. Or am I wrong?

Thanks,
Frans Spiesschaert

In general Dutch is rather well supported as it comes to
user software. I'm not sure if this is also the case for
educational software. I need to take a closer look at it.
It would be nice to have such software available in Dutch,
since the Ministry of Education in Flanders endorses the
use of open source software.

OK, I'll see when I can get to it.

Dear Holger,

I updated debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nl.po

What is the preferred way for me to submit the new po-file

1.
I could do "diff debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nl-20140327.po
debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nl.po > diff.debian-edu-wheezy-
manual.nl.txt" and attach diff.debian-edu-wheezy-
manual.nl.txt to a bugreport against debian-edu-doc, so
that you can patch debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nl.po

or

2.
I could attach the entire updated debian-edu-wheezy-
manual.nl.po (this time gzipped as debian-edu-wheezy-
manual.nl.po.gz)

What do you prefer?

Groetjes (regards),
Frans

Bug#751678: debian-edu-doc: dutch translation of audacity manual

2014-06-15 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Package: debian-edu-doc
Severity: wishlist

Dear All,
Please find attached the file audacity-manual.nl.po.gz,
with the Dutch translation of the debian edu manual for audacity.

Given the limited scope of this manual and the fact that there exists upstream
an up-to-date and more extended manual (with localisation effort), licensed
under a DFSG-free licence (Creative Commons Attribution 3.0), I wonder if I
should consider packaging it for Debian in a separate package.
I'am aware of bug #313038 against the audacity package and it's wontfix-tag. If
I understand it's motivation well, it is merely because the manual is available
on the internet. So a concertation with the audacity maintainers will be
necessary, in the first place in order to determine if packaging the audacity
documentation for Debian would be a worthwile effort.

Bug#771231: debian-edu-doc: [INTL:nl] Dutch translations of debian-edu wheezy and jessie manuals

2014-11-27 Thread Frans Spiesschaert

Package: debian-edu-doc
Severity: wishlist
Tags: l10n patch

Hi Holger,

Please find attached two diffs.
One to use as a patch for the wheezy manual.
The other is meant for patching the jessie manual.

First of all I updated the fuzzy and new strings.
But I also went through the text entirely and fixed some
typos and in a few places applied some small improvements
to the translation.

Groetjes,
Frans

Enclosed you may find the updated translation of the
audacity manual.

I noticed that your message didn't made it to the debian-
edu nor to the debian-l10n-dutch mailing list (attachment
to big?).

I also stumbled upon a typo in string $88 of the English
template:
s/some files from from Git/some files from Git/
would remove it.

Bug#774574: debian-edu-install: [INTL:nl] Dutch translation of debconf messages

2015-01-04 Thread Frans Spiesschaert

Package: debian-edu-install
Severity: wishlist
Tags: l10n patch

Hi,

Please find attached an updated Dutch translation
for the debconf messages of Debian-edu-install.
The update should cope with the 'not-up-to-date-po-file' error as
reported on
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/nl.

In the mean time I tried to optimize the layout for the translation
of message #10.

Should I become a debian-edu alioth project member?

2015-01-16 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Hi,

Until now I updated Dutch translations of DebianEdu documentation through bug
reports against the debian-edu-doc package. Do you think it would be a good
idea for me to become a member of the debian-edu alioth project in order to be
able to push translation updates directly into the git repo?
Last year I created a frans-guest alioth account in order to be able to upload
the translation for the debian-installer debconf templates. But eventually I
never activated it (never asked to become a member of the debian-installer
alioth team) because a member of the Debian Dutch l10n team with an active
alioth account uploaded the translation updates on my behalf.

Frans

Hi,

I messed things up and need help.
When I tried to push the updated Dutch translation today, it was
rejected. I then issued a git fetch command and tried to push again, but
with no success.
Eventually a issued
git push origin HEAD:4d2597f4eb2451071bd290f5014585f7ae770ae3
which created a new branch and that was not what I intended to do.
How can I revert this push action?

Thank you for the information.
I deleted the branch now and pushed the updated Dutch translation into
master.

My confusion and mistake is due to the fact that I don't know well how
to manage a situation wherein I have modified locally
debian-edu-jessie-manual.nl.po, and while these modifications are under
review, that same file also gets modified remotely.

You should do the following:

1. Add the following lines to /etc/network/interfaces:
>
auto eth2
iface eth2 inet static
  address 192.168.1.254
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  broadcast 192.168.1.255

2. Add the folowing line at the end of /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server
   INTERFACES="$INTERFACES eth2"

Alternativeliy you could in /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server replace the
lines
INTERFACES="eth0"
INTERFACES="$INTERFACES eth1"
INTERFACES="$INTERFACES eth2"
with the following line:
INTERFACES="eth0 eth1 eth2"

3. Add the second thin client network in LDAP using ldapvi. Use the way
the first thin client is set up in LDAP as an example.

Hope this helps.

As far as I can see it is indeed configured

I always use apt-get
and today I experienced for the first time the same problem as Simon
describes.
It happend after an 'apt-get update' on the tjener, which pulled in
quite a lot of packages.
When I thereafter ran 'LC_ALL=C TMP= TMPDIR= /usr/sbin/ltsp-chroot -m -a
i386 apt-get -y update' the update happend as expected, but the
execution of the command ended with the following message:

umount: /opt/ltsp/i386/proc: target is busy
(In some cases useful info about processes that
use the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1).)
Couldn't unmount /opt/ltsp/i386/proc.
umount: /opt/ltsp/i386/dev: target is busy
(In some cases useful info about processes that
use the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1).)
Couldn't unmount /opt/ltsp/i386/dev.

So I suppose the assertion of Simon (about failing to unmount) is
correct.

I did not had the time yet to further investigate which package upgrade
could be the culprit.

Today I tried to reproduce the problem, but I could not make it occur
any more.
Everything kept going smoothly. Can't imagine what caused the problem
yesterday.

Re: translations of applications

2015-09-15 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Hi Simon,

High quality localisation is an important asset for educational
software. So I think you pay attention to it with good reason.

Simon Oosthoek schreef op di 15-09-2015 om 10:29 [+0200]:
> Hi all

As far as gcompris is concerned, I can't agree with you. In Debian
gcompris is 100% translated to Dutch (please search for gcompris at
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/nl). Maybe you should check
your localisation settings if you encounter difficulties in using this
program in Dutch.
Childsplay is another story, because it's development is slowing down.
But a few months ago a full Dutch translation has been submitted to it's
developer and to the Debian maintainer of the package. You'll just have
to await a new upload of the package.

You can check for it at https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/.

>

Indeed

> one or a few applications), is anyone aware of efforts to do this?
>

Within Debian localisation efforts are mainly focussed on those parts
that are specific for the distribution. Coordination is done in general
at https://lists.debian.org/debian-i18n/ and specifically for Dutch at
https://lists.debian.org/debian-l10n-dutch/.

The localisation of application software mainly happens upstream from
Debian.
Applications that build tightly upon the specific libraries of a desktop
environment (such as Gnome or KDE) are generally dealt with by the
translation group of that environment. E.g. http://l10n.kde.org/ and for
Dutch http://l10n.kde.org/team-infos.php?teamcode=nl. For Gnome you may
refer to https://l10n.gnome.org/teams/ and for Dutch to
https://l10n.gnome.org/teams/nl/.

Besides that other localisation efforts for open source software exist.
There is the Dutch team of the Translation project
(http://translationproject.org/html/welcome.html) at
http://translationproject.org/team/nl.html.
There is also the software translation effort at Launchpad.net
(https://translations.launchpad.net/+languages/nl for Dutch).
One has also https://www.transifex.com/customers/open-source/, another
translation platform for the Open Source Community.

Finally some software developers prefer to coordinate the localisation
efforts for their software by themselves.

And generally all these efforts welcome more contributors.

Hope this helps.

The error message "[authz_core:error] client denied by server
configuration" is most likely due to a apache2 server misconfiguration.
I noticed from your previous mail that your debian-edu-userdir.conf
slightly differs from what is shipped with debian-edu jessie.

 * Did you modify other apache2 settings?
 * Do you have a /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/debian-edu-userdir.conf
on tjener which should be a symlink to
   /etc/apache2/mods-available/debian-edu-userdir.conf?
 * Do you have a /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/debian-edu-userdir.load
on tjener which should be a symlink to
   /etc/apache2/mods-available/debian-edu-userdir.load?
 * Which version of apache2 are you using?
 * If you are using configuration settings which are copied from
apache 2.2 examples, you should read
   http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/upgrading.html. The apache2
developers made significant changes in authorization configuration
   between versions 2.2 and 2.4.

Please use the debian-edu list when replying so other users can also
benefit from you trying to solve this issue.

So you probably also had a Wheezy to Jessie upgrade and missed
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Status/Jessie#Known_problems_we_ought_to_fix_but_which_can_be_worked_around_easily
as Wolfgang pointed out in a previous mail.
In that case, as described on that page, you just need to perform the
following 3 actions:

1. Adjust the content
of /etc/apache2/mods-available/debian-edu-userdir.conf to be like this:

 UserDir public_html
 UserDir disabled root

  AllowOverride FileInfo AuthConfig Limit
  Options MultiViews Indexes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch IncludesNoExec

   Require all granted

   Require all denied

2. Run 'a2enmod debian-edu-userdir' to enable the configuration.
3. Run 'service apache2 restart'.

You've almost managed to solve your problem.
The only remaining issue seems to be a directory in your path having to
restrictive permissions.
See https://wiki.apache.org/httpd/13PermissionDenied for some
clarification.

A possible reason in your case may be that tt is the home directory of
the so called "first user". It's permission is typically set to 700.
Quoting https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Jessie/AllInOne:

"During installation of the main server a first user account was
created. In the following text this account will be referenced as "first
user". This account is special, as there's no Samba account (can be
added via GOsa²), the home directory permission is set to 700 (so chmod
o+x ~ is needed to make personal web pages accessible), and the first
user can use sudo to become root."

Another possible reason may be a to restrictive umask setting
in /etc/pam.d/common-session. See "3.2.2. File system access
configuration" in
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Jessie/AllInOne.

Debian Edu Stretch release announcement: Dutch translation

2017-06-14 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Hi,

I prepared a Dutch translation for the Debian Edu Stretch release
announcement (wml file attached).
While I'm not a DD nor a member of the publicity team, I'm looking for
someone willing to sponsor it.
Note that in the announcements.git tree a nl folder and a drafts
subfolder still have to be created.

Debian Edu / Skolelinux Stretch — een volledige Linuxoplossing voor uw school

#use wml::debian::news

## Translators should uncomment the following line and add their name
## Leaving translation at 1.1 is okay; that's the first version which will
## be added to Debian's webwml repository

Nieuwe functionaliteit in Debian Edu 9 Stretch

http://ftp.skolelinux.org/skolelinux-cd/stretch-release/debian-edu-9+edu0-CD.iso>

rsync -avzP ftp.skolelinux.org::skolelinux-cd/stretch-release/debian-edu-9+edu0-CD.iso

Er is eveneens een uitgebreid image beschikbaar voor DVD / USB-stick (5.4 GiB),
waarop meer software staat (waardoor tijdens de installatie minder downloadtijd nodig is):

http://ftp.skolelinux.org/skolelinux-cd/stretch-release/debian-edu-9+edu0-USB.iso>

rsync -avzP ftp.skolelinux.org::skolelinux-cd/stretch-release/debian-edu-9+edu0-USB.iso

De images kunnen geverifieerd worden met het bestand SHA256SUMS.asc dat de ondertekende checksums van de images bevat; zie
http://ftp.skolelinux.org/skolelinux-cd/stretch-release/SHA256SUMS.asc>

Na het downloaden van een image, kunt u controleren

of de checksum ervan overeenkomt met de volgens het checksumbestand verwachte checksum;

en of er niet geknoeid werd met het checksumbestand.

education-desktop-lxde is a metapackage that pulls in various LXDE
components and lightweight desktop applications upon installation.
When you remove education-desktop-lxde, you just remove the metapackage
and not the packages that have been pulled in by it.
In order to remove those packages, you should run apt-get autoremove.
This command removes all packages that have been installed to fulfil a
dependency but upon which no package depends any longer.

Just install education-desktop-kde if it hasn't already been.

Then just select your preferred desktop environment via the Preferences

Quoting https://wiki.debian.org/SystemGroups:
"netdev: Members of this group can manage network interfaces through
the network manager and wicd."

So normally no one has to be added.

Look under
"29.1.4. Andere Änderungen im Vergleich zum vorhergehenden
Release"
in the manual.

In /etc/ssh/sshd_config you need to replace
PermitRootLogin without-password
with
PermitRootLogin yes
and restart the ssh daemon with
service sshd restart.

The problem was caused by ordinary double quotation marks in template
548.
msgfmt -cv -o /dev/null debian-edu-itil-manual.nl.po had no problem
with it, but dblatex failed to build the pdf.
I fixed the problem by replacing the ordinary double quotation marks
with curved quotation marks

If no one else steps in, I am willing to try and take over the Weblate
part, although this means that in the beginning I will be in need of
some guidance, because I have no previous experience with administering
a Weblate project. I only have a Weblate user account in order to be
able to update the Dutch translation for the po4a package.

I tried to join you on #debian-edu this afternoon, but it was somehow
in vain. I suppose you were available only passively. No problem with
me. I usually prefer anyway slower communication methods.

I use frans_ as my nickname (frans not being available any more).

My involvement with Debian Edu is mainly limited to maintaining the
Dutch translation.
The reason why I voluntered to take over Weblate coordination was to
prevent that some Debian Edu translators would find themselves suddenly
deprived of their preferred translation tool.
I'm completely fine with you taking over Weblate coordination and I am
confident that you will do a better job than I ever would be able to
do.
Given my very limited skills, I'm not sure that I can be of much help
to you. But if you have a different opinion, I'm willing to try and
take some easy and non-urgent tasks, as long as you are willing to take
the lead.
Don't expect me to be highly responsive, but you may expect me to
always be loyal and cooperative.
Given such a context, perhaps you rather prefer to take care of Weblate
coordination alone. That would completely fine for me too.
It's up to you to freely decide on this.

For the moment we have buster-manual translations for da, de, es,
fr, it, ja, nb, nl, pl, zh and zh_Hant of which nb, pl, zh and zh_Hant
use weblate.
de and nl are up-to-date and make use of the Debian i18n
infrastructure. No need for those languages to be added to weblate, in
my opinion.
The translations for da, es, fr, it and ja lag behind. They don't use
weblate but have an active translation community within Debian.
I would suggest to try to revitalize those translations first via
the appropriate Debian i18n mailing lists before transfering those
languages to weblate. I'm willing to try to prepare a draft e-mail to
those lists, asking for volunteers to update the buster manual.
I would prefer to send it to you for review beforehand.

I'm not so sure that this is needed as long as translations can be kept
up to date using Debian's own i18n infrastructure.

In my opinion that would be a very good thing if this could help us to
keep early translations out of the git-infrastructure of Debian Edu
itself, until they meet the minimum requirements for release.

While Debian Edu is a Debian Pure Blend, I think that we shouldn't
bypass the i18n infrastructure of Debian in the first place. I agree
with you that if we could manage to get more Debian-Edu-Doc
translations by reaching out via weblate to translators that are in
favour of free software, but aren't affiliated to Debian, it would
definitely be a plus. Of course I'm also fine with all Debian l10n
teams that prefer weblate as their translation tool, as nb is doing
already right now.

Re: Time to intensify Weblate usage

2019-02-15 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Hi Mike,

Basically, I can agree with all your points of view.

There is one possible consequence that I am afraid of, when
translations that are doing well within Debian itself, would show up on
weblate: an increase in workload when it comes to reviewing and
coordinating translations, especially for poorly staffed language
communities.

Let me take the case of the Dutch language community within Debian as
an example.
Our team (Debian Dutch l10n Team )
counts about 40 members/followers. Most of them aren't active
translators. They merely act as occasional reviewers.
In order to have a workable workflow, we agreed on a few rules:
- all translation activity will be coordinated in one single place: the
Dutch localisation mailing list.
- all translations will be submitted for review to the list.
- no explicit reaction on a request for the review of a translation,
means an approval of it (a kind of silent approval procedure, so to
say).

Now, last year Debian ended the email interface to the Debian
Description Translation Project and from that moment on, solely the web
interface can be used. This immediately had the following consequences:
1. two different places for reviewers to follow up on translations and
2. while on the web interface each translation needs a minimum of two
explicit approvals, no silent approvals are possible anymore and people
started to lose interest. From that moment on not even one Dutch
description translation entered the distribution any more: a real
drawback.

Now suppose one day someone on weblate wants to help out with the Dutch
translation. In principle, a very good thing, but in practice a third
location that reviewers would have to follow up on.

What I want to say through this example: we will have to be very
careful that we don't put unintentionally extra burdens op poorly
staffed teams. And we will need to stay very attentive that whatever we
undertake, it will always need to be supportive for the translation
teams involved, and, more precisely, supportive the way those teams
define it themselves.

So far my concerns.

Soon, I will propose a draft call for translations to you and to this
list, but for now it's time to go and rest.

Proposal on attempting to boost debian-edu-doc translations

2019-02-16 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Hi Mike (and all other list members),

This is what I propose in an attempt to boost debian-edu-doc
translations, with for the moment a focus on the Buster manual.

As a first step, I suggest to send the following short e-mail to the
known last translators of the partly translated debian-edu-doc-
packages (i.e. da, es, fr, it, ja, pl, zh, zh_Hant) with their
respective debian-l10n- mailing lists in CC. Not included here
are de, nb and nl that have proved to be able to keep their respective
translations more or less up to date.
A note on zh and zh_Hant: debian internationalisation uses one list for
Chinese: debian-l10n-chinese. As far as I understand zh represents a
locale code, as also zh_CN and zh_TW do, while zh_Hant represents
Chinese written in traditional script (where Hant is more or less
comparable with a charset indication, if I'm not mistaken) and zh_Hans
Chinese written in simplified script. As far as I know _Hans and _Hant
aren't used in Debian.

--Draft starts here--

Subject: Call for translation updates for the debian-edu-doc package

Hi,

You are known as the last translator of the debian-edu-doc package.
With the upcoming Buster release in mind, the DebianEdu team would like
to boost translations. Could you please inform us whether you intend to
work on a translation update in the coming weeks?
Unless you prefer to continue translating all by yourself, we intend to
issue a call for help with the translation of the debian-edu-doc
package to the i10n-list for your language, provided that you are in
favour of such an idea. Please let us know.

Thanks for contributing to Debian Edu.
On behalf of the DebianEdu team,
Mike Gabriel,
Frans Spiesschaert.

--Draft ends here--

As a second step I suggest to send out, a week later, the following
general call for help on the translation of debian-edu-doc to all
existing debian-i10n-* mailing lists and to debian-i18n, again except
for de, nb and nl and for those lists, of which an existing translator
informed us not to be in favour of it.
A second exception: those lists without a single activity so far in
2019 aren't worth the effort, I suppose.

--Draft starts here--

Subject: Call for help on the translation of the debian-edu-doc package

Hi,

In sync with the upcoming Debian Buster release, the DebianEdu team is
preparing a new release of Debian Edu / Skolelinux. Debian Edu is a
Debian Pure Blend providing an out-of-the box environment of a
completely configured school network. The teachers themselves or their
technical support can roll out a complete multi-user multi-machine
study environment within a few days.

The debian-edu-doc package is an important part of it. It guides even
not that tech savvy school ICT-persons through the setup, the
configuration and the operation of a completely free school ICT-
infrastructure. So please help us out to release the relevant debian-
edu-buster manual in as much languages as possible.

As shown in the table below translation efforts already exist in
several languages, although some of them could benefit of some extra
love. If you intend to help out with one of these, please try to
coordinate with the other contributors of your language group.

debian-edu-doc is a git maintained package. It's sources can be
retrieved via
g...@salsa.debian.org:debian-edu/debian-edu-doc.git or
https://salsa.debian.org/debian-edu/debian-edu-doc.git

If you intend to help out, please contact your relevant localisation
community within Debian (debian-l10n-) and
send a notification email to the debian-edu mailinglist: debian-edu@lis
ts.debian.org in order to inform us that you joined this translation
effort.

Please send updated translations to the debian-edu mailinglist
debian-edu@lists.debian.org
or as a wishlist bug against the debian-edu-doc package.

Please note that languages nb, pl, zh and zh_Hant use
hosted.weblate.org as their prefered translation tool. If you intend to
help out on one of those languages, please join their communities on
hosted.weblate.org.

Thanks.
On behalf of the DebianEdu team,

The above mail has been sent this evening, as planned
(i.e. da, es, fr, it, ja, pl, zh, zh_Hant).

The following email addresses gave a
Delivery Status Notification (Failure):

Stanisław Krukowski (Polish)
Rafael Ernesto Rivas (Spanish)
Victory (Japanese)

So I guess that we can provisionally conclude that they are no longer
available for translation work on debian-edu-doc.
Unless someone has a clue for an alternative email address for any of
them.

So, I intend to send out that call tomorrow to all debian-l10n-*

On the calls for translation updates for the Buster manual: observations and tentative conclusions

2019-03-28 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Hi all,

As you may remember, in February a call for translation updates for the
Buster manual was issued, in the first place to the last known
translator.
This resulted in:
- a translation update from Joe Hansen for Danish after 1 week, but
changes made to the manual after that time, still have to be
translated.
- a translation update from Claudio Carboncini for Italian after 2
weeks, but changes made to the manual after that time, still have to be
translated.
- a notification from Rafael Rivas (es) that he is planning to get back
on it, but no progress so far.
- a reply from Cédric Boutillier (fr), Anthony Mao (Traditional
Chinese) and Ma Yong (Simplified Chinese) that extra help would be
welcome.

A call for help with the translation to the debian-l10n-* lists a week
later resulted in:
- a new tranlator for French (Jean-Pierre Giraud)
- a new translator for Polish (Wiktor Wandachowicz)
but their contributions still have to show up in the repository.

At this moment, no progress could be established for the languages ja,
zh, zh_Hant and no new languages did show up.

Conclusions:
- da, de, it and nl have shown to be able to keep their translations up
to date using the Debian l10n infrastructure. Those languages can be
left disabled on hosted-weblate. Probably the Debian l10n
infrastructure will also prove to be suitable for fr. So also this
language can be left disabled on hosted-weblate for now.
- da and it showed to be very responsive on the call for translation
updates, but don't seem to keep their translations up to date in an
ongoing way. So an explicit call for translation updates to them is
useful, but given their responsiveness, such a call would have been
more appropriate as close as possible to the release.
- es and ja are currently disabled at hosted-weblate, but as there
seems to be a lack of translation capacity within Debian for these
languages for now, enabling those languages at hosted-weblate could be
worthwhile.

Do you think that the release of debian-edu-doc at the end of April

Suggestions for the Debian Edu Buster manual

2019-04-23 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Hi Wolfgang,

Allan Nordhøy made the following two comments via hosted.weblate:

Source string:
X2Go enables you to access a graphical desktop on the LTSP server over
both low bandwidth and high bandwidth connections from a PC running
Linux, Windows or Mac OS X. Additional software is needed on the client
side, see the https://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:installati
on:x2goclient">x2go wiki for more information.
Comment:Should be "macOS" not "OS X", also "X2Go wiki"
User: Allan Nordhøy

Source string:
x2goclient is a graphical client for
the X2Go system (not installed by default). You can use it to connect
to running sessions and start new sessions.
Comment:Suggestion: "and start new ones."?
User: Allan Nordhøy

Since I have no strong opinion on them and they are not merely about
typo's, I don't want to change the wiki myself.
I would prefer to leave it up to you to decide whether it's worth to
update the wiki.

Yes, I noticed you have been very active last days.

Once you are convinced that you got the translation of a given string
right, you have to push the SAVE button instead of the SUGGEST button.
Only then your translations can get merged into debian-edu-doc on
salsa.

For the moment nothing can be merged yet, since all translations still
are in a SUGGEST state. This means that weblate "remembers" those
translations, but doesn't commit them actually. This only happens after
the translation of a string has been "saved" explicitly by pushing the
"save" button.

An alternative is to switch to the new network interfaces naming
scheme: the release-notes for buster explain how to accomplish this.
See https://ddp-team.pages.debian.net/release-notes/amd64/release-note
s/ch-information.en.html#migrate-interface-names

Unfortunately the Japanese translation of that part of the release-
notes hasn't been updated yet.

That is correct. Usually the Weblate git-repo lags one week behind.

As a standard workflow Weblate expects a developer to merge all weblate
translation updates before updating his template file. While the
debian-edu-doc manual sees a continuous flow of updates, this standard
workflow does not fit very well with debian-edu-doc documentation.

Therefore once a week the most recent template file is merged with the
most recent translation files from Weblate. This happens outside any
git-repo in order to avoid merge conflicts. The result is an up-to-date
translations against an up-to-date template. This result then is
uploaded to Weblate and to Salsa. This means also that already
translated strings can suddenly show up again as to be translated. This
is e.g. frequently the case for template 2 of the manual, each time the
date stamp changes.

Is hosted.weblate entitled to push to debian-edu-doc.git

2019-05-25 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Hi,

Since between last week and now nothing changed in the templates files
of debian-edu-doc, translations updates from hosted.weblate could have
been pushed to debian-edu-doc.git from within hosted.weblate itself
(without any need for a msgmerge outside hosted.weblate in order to
prevent merge conflicts).

However I failed to figure out which push url I had to configure within
hosted.weblate for that purpose.
Does anyone know?

Don't worry. It isn't a cost or a burden at all.
Please go ahead using Weblate if that suits you best.

If this confuses you to much, you can also attach your translation to a
whislist bug against the release-notes package. You could file a bug
each time you finished the translation of a chapter.

See https://lists.debian.org/debian-i18n/2019/03/msg00012.html and
https://lists.debian.org/debian-i18n/2019/05/msg00003.html on the

Switching over (in the long run) to KiB, MiB and GiB would be,
as to my opinion, the best choice, since it is the technically
right one.

On coordinating translations of debina-edu-doc: some thoughts

2019-06-14 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Hi,

After being in charge of merging debian-edu-doc translation updates
from weblate into salsa, I want to share some observations.

1. Concurrent but different translation updates on both weblate and
salsa are difficult to manage.

So I propose that languages that use salsa for translation updates
should be deactivated at weblate, and that languages that were using
weblate and are willing to switch to salsa should do this only after
having announced this on the mailing list before doing so: this would
give the opportunity to Mike (or me) to commit the final updates from
weblate and to deactivate the language at weblate before new updates
arrive via salsa.

2. The hosted.weblate tool is conceived in the first place to promote
and facilitate the translation of user messages of programs (rather
than manuals).
In order to avoid conflicts, it expects a program developer to apply
the following steps (that weblate can partly automate on his behalf if
he wishes so):
 - pulling in all pending translations from weblate.
 - temporarily locking the weblate git repo.
 - updating his template file (xgettext -j)
 - merging the new pot with existing translations (msgmerge)
 - merging these updates into the weblate git repo.
 - unlocking the weblate git repo.

Applied to debian-edu-doc this would mean:
 - pulling in all pending translations from weblate.
 - temporarily locking the weblate git repo.
 - updating debian-edu-doc from the wiki
 - applying msgmerge to existing translations
 - merging these translations with an updated pot into the weblate git
repo.
 - unlocking the weblate git repo.

Nowadays I see debian-edu-doc updates from the wiki happen with
irregular time intervals and see them happen unannounced. In most cases
at that moment unapplied translations are te be found on
hosted.weblate. This would result in merge conflicts when one would try
to merge in the salsa updates into weblate.
And they regularly did, namely each time I had failed to notice that
such an update from the wiki had occurred.
In such a case one has to
 - merge the new pot and the current weblate translations outside the
weblate environment
 - commit the so merged translations to salsa
 - reset from within weblate all changes made to the local weblate
repository
 - pull into weblate all translations from salsa.

This is in my opinion a rather tedious and inelegant workflow.
So I would prefer if we could come to a coordinated workflow (see above
under "Applied to debian-edu-doc this would mean") between salsa
and weblate, e.g. once a week at a given time.

Comments and criticism welcome :-)

Apologies accepted.

I noticed this.
But there are still changes to the Japanese translation om Weblate that
are not yet integrated into the Japanese translation on Salsa.
Since the updates that you made to salsa were rather minimal, I would
suggest that you make them to weblate to today.
Then I will commit the weblate Japanese translation to salsa tomorrow
and deactivate the Japanese language at weblate.
So after that has happened tomorrow, you might from that moment on
safely continue translating using salsa.
I hope that sound OK to you.

No thanks needed. After all we all try to be as cooperative as we can
be, each of us at his own way.

> From me, weblate shows old version yet,

1. As far as I can see debian-edu-buster-manual.ja.po on weblate has
POT-Creation-Date: 2019-05-16 08 and
PO-Revision-Date: 2019-06-08

This is normal as once a week the weblate files are being updated to
the changes that occurred in the templates file during that week.
Usually this happens on Saturday.

>
> and there are one "FIXME untranslated" section only

Indeed

2. And as far as I can see debian-edu-buster-manual.ja.po on salsa has
POT-Creation-Date: 2019-06-12
PO-Revision-Date: 2019-06-08
and one fuzzy and one untranslated message.

3. As this translation is ahead of the translation on weblate for
templates 2 and 18, I think it's better that I deactivate Japanese on
weblate right now. It would be a small regression for Japanese if I
would merge the version in weblate into the version on salsa tomorrow.

This is a cooperative proposal, but given the actual situation, it looks to me
to be better not to merge the weblate Japanese buster file into salsa tomorrow.
Acting this way nothing of your work will be lost.

The most important is that you choose either the git repo on salsa or
the one at hosted.weblate to continue translating and not to switch
between both. While hosted.weblate doesn't track salsa on a permanent
basis, but is made up to date manually once a week, some of your
translations could get lost if you would switch between hosted.weblate
and salsa.

You can improve your translation wherever that seems appropriate to you
(a, b and c, mentioned above, or some other that you would like to
improve), but please choose one git repo to commit your translantions
to.

I thought I understood from your previous email that you preferred
salsa over hosted.weblate. So a few hours ago, I deactivated the
Japanese language on hosted.weblate. Because hosted.wablate is still
busy processing it's debian-edu-doc git repository, Japanese still
shows up for now, but when processing will be finished, Japanese will
no longer be available at hosted.weblate.

If I did not understood you well, and you would prefer to continue
translating via hosted.weblate, that is fine for me too. Just let me
know and I will reactivate Japanese on hosted.weblate. But in that case
please refrain from hopping on salsa at the same time.
If you would change your mind later on, and would like to change
between salsa and hosted.weblate, that is perfectly possible. But in
that case please talk to the list beforehand, so that the transition
can be coordinated.

> >

>
> Again, I'm suspending any task until you show me a GO sign.

If you just could let me know what path (salsa or hosted.weblate) you
have chosen, to make sure we understood each other well.

I don't think it's a matter of frequency, but rather a matter of
sequence. As I see it, in a flawless workflow, all translation updates
from weblate should be pulled in just before a debian-edu-doc update
from the wiki happens. Maybe it would be doable over time to integrate
this procedure in the scripts that make the update from the wiki
happen. Or would such a workflow be impossible in reality according to
you?

I didn't had the time to fully reintroduce myself yet, but at first
sight, there hasn't been that much activity with regard to weblate
during my absence. I just noticed that at Weblate two requests were
filed to add a new language to Debian Edu Documentation/Buster Manual
(Portuguese (pt_PT) and Croatian (hr)). Do we still need a minimal
number of translated strings before new languages can be added to the
git repo at Salsa?

Indeed.

I thought this was already the case, but I seem to be mistaken at that

So I guess I need some more time to take a closer look at it.

Thank you for notifying me.
I would like to update Weblate, but I don't know how I should handle
the current situation.
Let me explain.
Debian-edu-doc on salsa and debian-edu-doc on weblate have diverged
which leads to merge conflicts.
In the past I handled such a situation as follows:

1.
- on my PC, msmerge the weblate translation updates with the current
pot-files from salsa and commit the results to salsa. That, I did
yesterday. Thus, at this moment the git repo on salsa has up to date
translations for all languages, both the ones that are maintained at
weblate and the ones that are directly maintained at salsa (except for
debian-edu-buster-manual.hr.po, translated at 0,5%, and debian-edu-
buster-manual.pt_PT.po, translated at 0,6%).

2.
- at Weblate, execute a "reset of all changes in the local repository".

3.
- at weblate, pull in all changes from salsa.

That way the merge conflict was easily resolved without any loss of
content.

But if I would do a reset at Weblate now, I'm afraid that debian-edu-
buster-manual.hr.po and debian-edu-buster-manual.pt_PT.po would get
lost.

I have no clue on how to handle this.
Suggestions are very welcome.

Thank you for this offer. But in fact, it's not that vital, because I'm
subscribed to debian-edu-comm...@alioth-lists.debian.net (thanks to
you, if I remember well).

Yes, and I will have to do so for now, I suppose, if I go on with this
and execute a reset at weblate.
But I don't consider it to be a viable solution in the long run,
because with those files present on weblate and absent on salsa, there
will be always unavoidable merge conflicts.
At the weblate side I am unable to merge individual files onto salsa. I
only can try and do a global merge. That's the reason why merging all
weblate translation updates into salsa before a manual update from the
wiki happens, is so important to avoid merge conflicts.

>
> would maybe using a different branch for weblate help? (a branch

Probably this could offer a way out.
A long-lasting branch "branch-hosted-weblate" (or a much cuter branch
name) at salsa, with the not-yet-ready translations included, and that
mirrors the master branch at salsa except for the not-yet-ready
translations, and that functions as origin for hosted-weblate (this is
configurable at the weblate side), would at least bring us back to a
situation that can be managed the way I was used to before not-yet-
ready translations showed up.
With such a setup and with a local copy of salsa and of hosted weblate
on my PC, I could merge in individual files and I would be able to
solve possible merge conflicts the way I was used to in the past.

If we would chose to try out this solution, I woud prefer first to
handle things manually for a certain time, in order to get used to the
new situation and in order to learn more on possible drawbacks, before
moving forward in looking for a procedure that gets things done
automatically as much as possible, while avoiding merge conflicts.

updated also Rosegarden manual copyright information for Simplified

I would prefer to have the names and dates part of the CopyRight pages
kept out of the pot and po-files and to have them stored elsewhere.

So we could have stable translatable Copyright information, something
like this:

"This document is released under the GPL2 or any later version. The
following persons have contributed to it:

If you add content to it, please only do so if you are the author. You
need to release it under the same conditions! Then add your name here
and release it under the "GPL v2 or any later version" licence.

All translations of this document are released under the GPL2 or any
later version. The following persons contributed to its translation
into

• German:

• Danish:

• Dutch:

etc."

I am not familiar enough with the internals of debian-edu-doc, but
otherwise I think I would just have seconded Wolfgangs proposal.

I don't now if you are aware that there exists good Italian

You have to set up support for older (32 bit) computers. See section
17.2.6. of the manual (Add LTSP chroot to support 32-bit-PC clients).
It is the same section number in the Italian manual.
It's not just a matter of an appropriate kernel but rather a matter of
an appropriate image for the 32 bit clients.

Yes, this is perfectly possible. See for detailed information Section
17.4 of the manual in general, and more specifically section 17.4.1.
LTSP client configuration in LDAP (and lts.conf).

The main server runs a backup service. See section "11.2. Backup
Management" of the manual on that topic. So you could restore a backup copy
of the file /etc/ldap/gosa.ldif from the day before you made your mistake.
That is the file that contains the newteacher template.

Most likely your /etc/slbackup/slbackup.conf configuration file lay-out is
the reason why.

The package comes with an example configuration file. Take a look at
/usr/share/doc/slbackup/examples/slbackup-server+ltsp.conf
and compare it to your own /etc/slbackup/slbackup.conf configuration file.

The slbackup system is an ordinary client server system.
The main server tjener runs the back up service and thus acts as the
slbackup server.
Machines that have some files and directories backed up are clients. Since
also files and directories of tjener are backed up by the slbackup service,
tjener is in this respect the backup client. If you have other machines in
your network that are backed up, they also are clients.

You are right, but it's just an example.
Upon the installation of the main server of debian-edu, the following
locations are preseded for slbackup: /etc /skole/tjener/home0 /var/backups.

So in your configuration file you should normally have the following three
location lines under the stanza:

location /etc
location /skole/tjener/home0
location /var/backups

You can add others at your own discretion.
I personally prefer to add the line

location /opt/ltsp/amd64/etc

because I use to tweak some settings in lts.conf and under the /ltsp/ and
/X11/ directories in order to comply special needs of some client
computers.

I suspect that salsa can only safely modify a limited number of files in
one single commit: my commit changed 37 files, while salsa mentioned only
18 changed files.
I ran git diff --name-status master..weblate and this reports only a
difference for rosegarden-manual.pl.po between weblate and master (except
for the not-yet-ready translations in weblate). So no big issue, but I
guess I'd beter split up into smaller commits in the future.

Effort to reduce translatable strings in debian-edu-doc manuals

2020-07-21 Thread Frans Spiesschaert
Hi everyone,

While following up on the translation of debian-edu-doc manuals via
weblate, I sometimes notice that only trivial translation updates are
needed. This is the case, for example, when a new person contributed to a
translation, which changes the copyright information about that
translation, requiring all translations to be updated again.

I think it should be possible to reduce the amount of strings to be
translated by filtering out from the POT file as many non-translatable
strings as possible. This can be achieved via the po4a program, which is
already being used for building the debian-edu-doc manuals.

What follows is a kind of a concept note to clarify what I am thinking
about. I took the audacity manual as an example, because it is very limited
in size.
What I propose is far from being ready to go into production. It still
needs further development. Also how exactly to integrate this into the
current building process of the PO and POT files and of the translated
documentation, has yet to be elaborated.

Thoughts and comments are very welcome.

Here goes the proposal.

***1*** about the actual po4a.cfg

The actual po4a.cfg looks like this:

[po_directory] .

[type: docbook] audacity-manual.xml \
$lang:$lang.xml \
opt:"-o untranslated='' -M UTF-8 -k 15"

As far as I can tell the option -o untranslated=''
has no effect on the audacity manual and could be dropped safely.

***2*** proposal for an updated p04a.cfg

I would propose to add a pot_in element to po4a.cfg
this would make po4a.cfg look like this.

[po_directory] .

[type: docbook] audacity-manual.xml \
pot_in:audacity-manual_stripped.xml \
$lang:$lang.xml \
opt:"-M UTF-8 -k 15"

Explanation:
With po4a it is possible to hide some strings for translators.
For that purpose one can build a audacity-manual_stripped.xml (this is a
random name) that omits untranslatable strings and is used for
the creation of the pot and po files, while the original xml file
(audacity-manual.xml in this case) will be used to build the translated
documents.

***3*** an example script to create audacity-manual_stripped.xml
from audacity-manual.xml.

For each manual such a script will be different, because the paragraphs
that need to be kept out of the POT files will differ for each manual. Such
a script could be located in the scripts directory under debian-edu-
doc/documentation.
For the audacity manual I in fact propose two scripts: a dash script (the
main script) that also calls a sed script.
I hope the scripts are self explanatory.

** Below, firstly, the dash script (ugly named strip-aud-untrans.sh) **

#!/bin/sh

if [ $# -ne 2 ]
then
echo " You need to pass exactly 2 parameters."
 echo " Usage:\n ./strip-aud-untrans.sh audacity/audacity-
manual.xml audacity/audacity-manual_stripped.xml"
 exit
fi

# call sed script strip-aud.sed to strip some
# untranslatable paragraphs from audacity-manual.xml.
./strip-aud.sed $1 > $2

# reappend the last two lines to prevent xml to be brokenn.
sed -i '$s%^$%\n%' $2

** Below, secondly, the sed script (evenly ugly named strip-aud.sed) **

#!/bin/sed -f

# Usage: ./strip-aud.sed audacity/audacity-manual.xml > audacity/audacity-
manual_stripped.xml

# delete paragraphs that just have a
# (no need to translate html links)
/^
# (no need to translate the name of inserted images)
/^/,+1d

# remove everything from up to end of file
# this is the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE
# (not to be translated according to the text in the manual)
# perhaps it is even better to also strip section 17)
//,$d

***4*** Discussion

The above proposal only strips a very reduced number of paragraphs.
More paragraphs could be stripped, provided a slightly different wording
of the audacity manual.

For example (this wording uses two paragraphs, which would make it possible
to strip the paragraph with the html link):

There exists a frequently updated wiki version at:
   http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Manuals/Audacity"/>

instead of (the actual wording uses one paragraph):

The version at http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Manuals/Audacity"/> is a
wiki and updated frequently.

One also could reword the translation copyright paragraphs (using two
paragraphs):

The Dutch translation is released under the GPL v2 or any later version
and is copyrighted by:
Frans Spiesschaert (2014, 2018, 2019, 2020)

instead of (the actual wording in one paragraph):

The Dutch translation is copyrighted by Frans Spiesschaert (2014, 2018,
2019, 2020) and is released under the GPL v2 or any later version.

Doing so, one could keep the name of the translators out of the pot file.

***5*** End of the proposal. As already mentioned before, thoughts andcomments
welcome.

While I do agree that it won't be easy, I still think that it should be
possible to at least make some progress on this.
But let me make this clear: it cannot be acceptable to make existing things
worse by changing certain things.

Cool! So let's revive that effort ;)

I am aware of it, and it would be unacceptable to break things.

You are right on this. By stripping the whole paragraph, not only the image
name, but also the alt name is stripped. As far as the audacity manual is
concerned, I don't consider it a deterioration, because the alt names are
just a repetition of the filename. And putting my translator head on, I
never translate file names.
Things are different, though, for the bullseye manual for instance. In that
manual some alt names are proper descriptions of the file content, and as a
translator, I want to translate such strings. So stripping the whole
paragraph would indeed be a deterioration instead of an improvement.

This is an option definitely worth considering, but I would prefer to keep
giving credit to translators, as long as this wouldn't imply each time a
POT-file update. Translating a manual such as the bullseye manual is quite
an effort that is worth being given credit for (if reasonably possible).

> The translators could be credited, though - via an (optional) addendum
> file for a
> specific translation.

This is a solution that is used by Lucas Nussbaum for his packaging-
tutorial and it is also an option that is suggested by the developers of
po4a.
However, such .add files can reasonably only be created by the translators
themselves because it needs to be written in their own language.
Lucas Nussbaum therefore made a README.translators file in his source, that
reads
"Crediting your work:
See po4a/add_fr/fr.add for an example of adding an additional slide at the
end, and the fr.po file for an example of adding your name on the title
slide."
But for translators using hosted-weblate for their translations, creating
such an extra file isn't an option.
Therefore I am still in favour of a rewording of the translation copyright
paragraphs.

I am aware that the file scripts/get_copyright parses the xml or po files
to collect this information.
So if we would alter the wording of the translation copyright paragraphs,
we would have to adapt that script to the new situation (without breaking
anything of course).

Thank you for those suggestions and examples. Let's say that I put them on
hold for the moment, until it is proven that what I am aiming for is
unfeasible (I hope not, of course).
