Why do you folk keep fucking up the keyboard layout ?
I use a belgian keyboard, and the alt-gr key is not working.
This makes this system totally unusable, and each time i fix it someone
braks it again. This is very frustrating.
PLEASE provide CORRECT keyboard maps !

Hi there,

In order to support the porting efforts based on Glibc and kernels of *BSD
(GNU/kFreeBSD and GNU/kNetBSD), for which I'm the principal developer, we
need to update every package that uses libtool to version 1.5.2-1 or later.

I've filed wishlist bugs for this to a few specific packages, but the bulk
of libtool-using libraries in Debian is yet to be updated. Each maintainer
can help by doing either of these things (preferably both):

  - Update the libtool in your package. You can do that by running the
following commands in the package source tree (Make sure you're using
libtool 1.5.2-1 or later):

libtoolize -c -f
aclocal (-Im4 might be needed if there's an "m4" template dir)
autoconf

If your package uses a tar-in-tar system you'll have to run these
commands on build time by other means. Particularly, if you use CDBS
the DEB_AUTO_UPDATE_{LIBTOOL,AUTOMAKE,AUTOCONF} variables can help you.

  - Ask upstream to update libtool in their next release. The upstream version
of libtool supports GNU/k*BSD since version 1.5.2, so you can tell them
to use any version equal or later than that for the update.

Thanks for your cooperation.

I occasionally install a program and need to know how to use it as
quickly as possible; for example, while reading through bug reports.
So, I run foo --help. Sometimes, the help screen is more than 25
lines long, and it scrolls on past. So, I run foo --help |less.
Occasionally, though, foo writes its help output to stderr, and I'm
left with an empty less buffer. So, I try again: foo --help 2>&1
 |less. This is a pretty obnoxious command to have to type just to
see what the required commands are, and in what order they are taken
(and, I guess csh doesn't even allow it).

I already know that I can use the video buffer with shift-pageup. And
I know that help output is supposed to fit on a single page, but I
also know that sometimes it doesn't.

I suppose I will start filing minor bugs against packages that do
this. I'd like to hear other people's opinions, though. (It occurs
to me that help output to stderr is arguably appropriate if an invalid
option is given). Part of the problem is that its fairly depressing
when investigation into one bug leads to filing of another bug:)

Package: general
Severity: wishlist

Here is my plan how to reduce Debian servers load and users Debian packages
download bandwidth:

1. Package in .zip (or a similar format) instead of .tar.{gz,bz2}

2. Implement ZIP filesystem as Linux kernel module.

3. Users could be then able to mount a .zip file from the Debian FTP server
and compile a package directly from the server. This would reduce download
I deem some about 50% compared with current downloading a source package
for compilation, because in this scheme only used files from the source
would be download (no downloading of documentation which is not needed for
compilation of a package, etc.)

Here there is however a complicated issue of what to do with Debian
patches.

Ideally we would also add Linux module for "patched file system" (on the
top of any filesystem, e.g. the above mentioned ZIP filesystem), which
would display files from an other FS with a given patch applied.

A simpler implementation would be to have TWO .zip files for each package
on Debian FTP site: unpatched .zip file (equivalent to .tar.{gz,bz2} as
currently used) and also patched .zip file, which could be usable for above
mentioned compilation directly from the FTP server without downloading.

It sounds as though you are concerned with source packages, not binary
packages. Do you have reason to believe that a significant fraction of
Debian archive bandwidth is the source packages? I suspect it's a very
small fraction.

Building a package with dpkg-buildpackage or debuild scans the entire
source tree, as well as the .orig.tar.gz, in order to generate the
.diff.gz file. So your hypothetical benefit only accrues to people who
explicitly tell dpkg-buildpackage or debuild *not* to rebuild the
source package.

Speaking for nobody in particular, I highly doubt your approach will
ever be implemented. Acting on nobody else's behalf, I'm closing your
bug. Anyone's free to reopen it if you feel I'm wrong.

You have new mail in /home/nordsburg/Maildir/

One sees it often. At least the reminder mechanism, knowing where the
mail is hidden on the system, could also give a hint in its message of
at least one basic way of reading ones mail. Otherwise one can just cd
... ls ... cd ... ls ... cat.

Anyway, apparently it is so easy for system administrators to turn
their system into a Maildir system, leaving users in the lurch.

Bash's MAILPATH's custom messages in /etc/profile perhaps is a candidate,
but is it applicable to directories? And then it must get pasted into
/etc/profile.

$ apropos Maildir
maildir: nothing appropriate.
$ apropos mail|wc -l

$ apt-cache search maildir|wc -l

Then I suppose he would use dlocate -l to see which of those were
installed. Anyway, by now our grandma's initial joy at "You've got
mail!" will surely be her last.

Anyway, it's too easy for a Debian system to end up this way.

Perhaps make dependency/alternatives between Maildir enabled clients
and servers?

There is no general problem. Debian's default mail configuration works
sufficiently. Since you or your administrator decided to switch the
setup to a Maildir configuration, you need to change the MUA settings
accordingly. Especially you need to use an appropriate MUA which "mail"
hardly is, see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=197273.

Talk to your system administrator or somebody close to you who knows how
Maildir works and which things you need to care about.

Eduard.

Georg,

As Rene says, "welcome to sid". The current archive semantics do not ensure
that packages in unstable will always be installable, and not all causes for
uninstallability are grave bugs (or package bugs at all). In this case, the
uninstallability is a self-correcting problem that is waiting only on the
autobuilders to take care of this package.

Hello,

the german release notes talk about the "--guess" option to deborphan,
however this is only a prefix for multiple options, I guess this should mean
"--guess-dummy" or maybe "one of the --guess* options".

Sorry dont know which package to report this bug against, thats why i mail
directly. maybe it is a good idea to add "how to report a bug in this file",
too?

Eventually we may also want to add a paragraph about "how to find packages
on your system which are not (wih the corect version) in the official release"

Greetings
Bernd

The English version has "so you might also find deborphan with the --guess=
=20
options" which has been translated to "mit dem Parameter --guess", so I=20
guess this is primarily a translation problem. Therefore CCing the=20

I agree though that the original could be improved.

Hi there,

I tried to put a collection of debian packages on a tomcat webserver along=
=20
with a Packages.gz for easy retrieval via apt-get. However the retrieval do=
es=20
not work whenever a percent sign is part of the filename (and the follwing=
=20
two characters indicate a valid hex number) as tomcat interprets the escape=
=20
sequence and retrieves the wrong file name.
 http://oberon/apt/./g++_4%3a3.3.5-3_i386.deb
becomes:
 http://oberon/apt/./g++_4:3.3.5-3_i386.deb

According to rfc1630 percent signs are reserved for quoting and hence=20
forbidden as (literal) part of a URI. So tomcat is doing nothing wrong.

Most other webservers do the percent expansion only in the query part of a =
URL=20
so this problem does not occur there. Tweaking apt-get to send properly=20
quoted URLs would break on other servers. Not desirable :-)

So I'd suggest to avoid the percent sign as part of a package file name.

=2D-=20
Mit freundlichem Gru=C3=9F / With kind regards
Holger Klawitter

if one opens a config file modified by debconf,
he can see the statement that this section of the file
is managed by Debconf. But there isn't any hint, which
script/program to call to modify the values.
in my opinion there should allso be a hint
'# call /var/lib/dpkg/blablabla to modify it.'
for every possible config-script.
otherwise people will start setting differing options
overriding the debconf values after being set.

Hello,

as a normal user, I can mount my cdrom, but I cannot eject it:

# eject /cdrom
eject: unable to open `/dev/cdrom'

As root, I can eject the CDROM all right.

Furthermore, I just tracked the problem down: it is due to /dev/hdc's
group ownership by 'disk'. Changing that to 'cdrom' seems to remedy
the situation.

Other people also had the same problem, please take a look at

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2003/12/msg03445.html

So, the question is: why is /dev/hdc owned by 'disk' in Sarge? Does it
have to be so for some reason? If not, I'd suggest to change that to
'cdrom' as it seems to help with ejecting...

best,

Leszek

Closing as this has been fixed in d-i for some time. Of course that

Actually we are the only big GNU/Linux distribution without bootsplash support.
We can try to introduce it in debian?
Some possible solution
1. Patch and user tools (www.bootsplash.org) or (www.bootsplash.de)
2. Via userland tools only (like fedore)
3. The Debian Way (some idea?)

Cheers,
Stefano

Package "splashy" provides userland alternative
Package "bootsplash" and related packages provide kernel patch alternative

So this bug is fixed for anyone who wants a bootsplash.

Debian doesn't put in a bootsplash by default: I'm actually rather happy about
that,
as it makes it easier to diagnose early kernel failures.

Hi,

Xt applications (like xfig, gv, xterm, ...) are currently not localized,
while software support is already there, the traduction team just needs
to work on translating labels in /etc/X11/app-defaults.

For instance, the attached files are the ones that the xterm
package should put in /etc/X11/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/app-defaults/ for
French localization (some UTF-8 versions should also be put into
/etc/X11/fr_FR.UTF-8/app-defaults/)

Regards,
Samuel

apt-cache and its manual page uses the word "dependency" backwards.
This error makes the documentation hard to understand.

Per the The American Heritage Dictionary (via
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=dependency), a dependency
is:
...
2. Something dependent or subordinate.
...

That is, if A depends on B, A is a dependency of B. (B is not a
dependency of A.)

Note that the manual page uses "dependency" backwards:

Forward (normal) dependencies are those packages upon which the
package in question depends...

apt-cache itself uses "dependency" backwards also:

$ apt-cache showpkg apt
Package: apt
...
Reverse Depends:
  debconf,apt 0.3.12.1
  ...
Dependencies: 0.5.4 - libc6 (2 2.2.3-7) libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2 (0 (null))
   dpkg-dev (0 (null)) libapt-pkg-doc (3 0.3.7) libapt-pkg-dev (3 0.3.7)
...

If apt-cache said "Depends on:" instead of "Dependencies:", it would be
correct.

Package: general
Version: n/a?

Debian seems to use the word "dependency" backwards a lot, making
things confusing and hard to understand.

Per the The American Heritage Dictionary (via
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=dependency), a dependency
is:
1. Dependence.
2. Something dependent or subordinate.
3. A territory under the jurisdiction of a state of
which it does not form an integral part.

Note the "direction" of sense 2: If A depends on B, then A is a
dependency (A is dependent on B). B is _not_ a dependency of A.

In Debian (documentation, executable output, e-mail), uses of
"dependency" in sense 1 are usually fine.

However, uses in sense 2 are usually backwards (see bugs 212028,
212013, and especially 212034, which also shows how weak an
understanding some Debian developers have of the word).

Obviously, Debian documentation and tools (and developers) shouldn't
use "dependency" backwards.

(Well, that should be obvious, but if it isn't, consider the confusion
it generates. Given the international nature of Debian, consider
readers who aren't native speakers of English, trying to figure out
what "dependency" means in English and then trying to figure out what
Debian documentation/etc. is really saying.)

Since merely using "dependency" correctly would be ambiguous given
all the incorrect usage, Debian should probably refer to "depended-on
package" (or library, etc., as the case may be). That construct would
be unambiguous and perfectly clear (and wouldn't be much longer than
"dependency").

Hi,

I'm closing this bug since it hasn't got any input since ages. The
related discussion in #212034 (closed) also indicates that #212049 is
a non-bug.

Package: general
Severity: important

Sorry for reporting on this unspecific level, but i cannot
isolate.

Since updating to etch some weeks ago i was not able to print
from firefox, because always letter format is requested on the
printer panel. This happens independend of the input in the
printer property fields in the printing dialog if firefox (where
i entered "A4") and independend of the printer settings in cups
(where i also use "A4") - see bug 383.255.

First i thought this a specific problem of firefox, but now i
have the same missbehaviour with xpdf, so i think it is a more
general problem which i cannot identify.

Both programms worked fine in sarge.

The only help i can give, is that i can work around in both cases
by printing to a file and remove the first line containing
"/PageSize 3" with an editor and afterwards use lpr on the
command line to print that modified postscript-file.

Because i cannot think that this is the intended "new debian way
of printing" and because a am happy with debian for years i dont
want to change distribution because of this, but i also dont want
to life with this situation for a long time.

I use a standard gnome desktop installation and the Cups printing
system. My printer is a HP Laserjet 4 plus.

By the way printing from openoffice works fine (at least writer

A patch is below.

G++ 4.1 has shown some really horrible code in your software. You
cannot just put a semi-colon in src/sd/bv/adsactivity.h to work around
a bug that is somewhere completely else. This may have worked in 4.0,
but now you get an error about an "extra ';'". It took me quite a
while to figure out what was going on there... depending on what is
included, this semicolon in sd/bv/adsactivity.h was helpful to work
around that bug in another file, but if that file was not included,
the semicolon would not terminate anything at all... hence the "extra
';'" error. I removed the semicolon and fixed the real bug in
src/sd/bv/bvinstances.h.
