I've filed wishlist bugs for this to a few specific packages, but the bulk of libtool-using libraries in Debian is yet to be updated. Each maintainer can help by doing either of these things (preferably both): - Update the libtool in your package. You can do that by running the following commands in the package source tree (Make sure you're using libtool 1.5.2-1 or later): libtoolize -c -f aclocal (-Im4 might be needed if there's an "m4" template dir) autoconf If your package uses a tar-in-tar system you'll have to run these commands on build time by other means. Particularly, if you use CDBS the DEB_AUTO_UPDATE_{LIBTOOL,AUTOMAKE,AUTOCONF} variables can help you. - Ask upstream to update libtool in their next release. The upstream version of libtool supports GNU/k*BSD since version 1.5.2, so you can tell them to use any version equal or later than that for the update. Thanks for your cooperation. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.4.25-1-k7 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C --- Received: (at 242950-close) by bugs.debian.org; 11 Feb 2005 16:53:24 + >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Feb 11 08:53:24 2005 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from newraff.debian.org [208.185.25.31] (mail) by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1Cze2m-0007pm-00; Fri, 11 Feb 2005 08:53:24 -0800 Received: from katie by newraff.debian.org with local (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1CzdxT-0001j3-00; Fri, 11 Feb 2005 11:47:55 -0500 From: Aurelien Jarno <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Katie: $Revision: 1.55 $ Subject: Bug#242950: fixed in zziplib 0.12.83-2 Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sender: Archive Administrator <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2005 11:47:55 -0500 Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-4.8 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00,FROM_ENDS_IN_NUMS, HAS_BUG_NUMBER autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 X-Spam-Level: Source: zziplib Source-Version: 0.12.83-2 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of zziplib, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: libzzip-0-12_0.12.83-2_i386.deb to pool/main/z/zziplib/libzzip-0-12_0.12.83-2_i386.deb libzzip-dev_0.12.83-2_i386.deb to pool/main/z/zziplib/libzzip-dev_0.12.83-2_i386.deb zziplib-bin_0.12.83-2_i386.deb to pool/main/z/zziplib/zziplib-bin_0.12.83-2_i386.deb zziplib_0.12.83-2.diff.gz to pool/m

So, I run foo --help. Sometimes, the help screen is more than 25 lines long, and it scrolls on past. So, I run foo --help |less. Occasionally, though, foo writes its help output to stderr, and I'm left with an empty less buffer. So, I try again: foo --help 2>&1 |less. This is a pretty obnoxious command to have to type just to see what the required commands are, and in what order they are taken (and, I guess csh doesn't even allow it). I already know that I can use the video buffer with shift-pageup. And I know that help output is supposed to fit on a single page, but I also know that sometimes it doesn't. I suppose I will start filing minor bugs against packages that do this. I'd like to hear other people's opinions, though. (It occurs to me that help output to stderr is arguably appropriate if an invalid option is given). Part of the problem is that its fairly depressing when investigation into one bug leads to filing of another bug:) --- Received: (at 295328-done) by bugs.debian.org; 15 Feb 2005 11:05:46 + >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Feb 15 03:05:46 2005 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from 83-216-134-182.neilsu339.adsl.metronet.co.uk (cyclone.suffields.me.uk) [83.216.134.182] by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1D10WX-0007V3-00; Tue, 15 Feb 2005 03:05:46 -0800 Received: from asuffield by cyclone.suffields.me.uk with local (Exim 3.36 #1 (Debian)) id 1D10WM-0008PL-00 for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Tue, 15 Feb 2005 11:05:34 + Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 11:05:34 + From: Andrew Suffield <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Bug#295328: general: Help messages to stderr should be banned Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> References: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="YiEDa0DAkWCtVeE4" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> X-No-CC: I subscribe to this list; do not CC me on replies. Bug#352912: marked as done (general: Reduce network load using zip packaging and VFS)
Your message dated Wed, 15 Feb 2006 02:31:57 -0600 with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line Bug#352912: general: Reduce network load using zip packaging and VFS has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: general Severity: wishlist Here is my plan how to reduce Debian servers load and users Debian packages download bandwidth: 1. Package in .zip (or a similar format) instead of .tar.{gz,bz2} 2. Implement ZIP filesystem as Linux kernel module. 3. Users could be then able to mount a .zip file from the Debian FTP server and compile a package directly from the server. This would reduce download I deem some about 50% compared with current downloading a source package for compilation, because in this scheme only used files from the source would be download (no downloading of documentation which is not needed for compilation of a package, etc.) Here there is however a complicated issue of what to do with Debian patches. Ideally we would also add Linux module for "patched file system" (on the top of any filesystem, e.g. the above mentioned ZIP filesystem), which would display files from an other FS with a given patch applied. A simpler implementation would be to have TWO .zip files for each package on Debian FTP site: unpatched .zip file (equivalent to .tar.{gz,bz2} as currently used) and also patched .zip file, which could be usable for above mentioned compilation directly from the FTP server without downloading. --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- [Victor Porton] > Here is my plan how to reduce Debian servers load and users Debian > packages download bandwidth: It sounds as though you are concerned with source packages, not binary packages. Do you have reason to believe that a significant fraction of Debian archive bandwidth is the source packages? I suspect it's a very small fraction. > 3. Users could be then able to mount a .zip file from the Debian FTP > server and compile a package directly from the server. This would > reduce download I deem some about 50% compared with current > downloading a source package for compilation, because in this scheme > only used files from the source would be download (no downloading of > documentation which is not needed for compilation of a package, etc.) Building a package with dpkg-buildpackage or debuild scans the entire source tree, as well as the .orig.tar.gz, in order to generate the .diff.gz file. So your hypothetical benefit only accrues to people who explicitly tell dpkg-buildpackage or debuild *not* to rebuild the source package. Speaking for nobody in particular, I highly doubt your approach will ever be implemented. Acting on nobody else's behalf, I'm closing your bug. Anyone's free to reopen it if you feel I'm wrong. signature.asc Description: Digital signature --- End Message ---

Since you or your administrator decided to switch the setup to a Maildir configuration, you need to change the MUA settings accordingly. Especially you need to use an appropriate MUA which "mail" hardly is, see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=197273. However the retrieval do= es=20 not work whenever a percent sign is part of the filename (and the follwing= =20 two characters indicate a valid hex number) as tomcat interprets the escape= =20 sequence and retrieves the wrong file name. http://oberon/apt/./g++_4%3a3.3.5-3_i386.deb becomes: http://oberon/apt/./g++_4:3.3.5-3_i386.deb According to rfc1630 percent signs are reserved for quoting and hence=20 forbidden as (literal) part of a URI. So tomcat is doing nothing wrong. Most other webservers do the percent expansion only in the query part of a = URL=20 so this problem does not occur there. Tweaking apt-get to send properly=20 quoted URLs would break on other servers. Not desirable :-) So I'd suggest to avoid the percent sign as part of a package file name. =2D-=20 Mit freundlichem Gru=C3=9F / With kind regards Holger Klawitter =2D- [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Received: (at 312605-done) by bugs.debian.org; 9 Jun 2005 17:21:43 + >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Jun 09 10:21:43 2005 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from newmail.brainfood.com [146.82.138.14] (Debian-exim) by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1DgQit-0007GC-00; Thu, 09 Jun 2005 10:21:43 -0700 Received: from brown.brainfood.com ([146.82.138.61] helo=gradall.private.brainfood.com) by newmail.brainfood.com with esmtp (TLS-1.0:DHE_RSA_3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA:24) (Exim 4.31) id 1DgQiO-0003vs-2A; Thu, 09 Jun 2005 12:21:12 -0500 Date: Thu, 9 Jun 2005 12:21:41 -0500 (CDT) From: Adam Heath <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> X-X-Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Holger Klawitter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Bug#312605: percent sign in debian package names In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> References: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-8.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00,HAS_BUG_NUMBER, VALID_BTS_CONTROL autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 X-Spam-Level: X-CrossAssassin-Score: 2 reassign 312605 general thanks On Wed, 8 Jun 2005, Holger Klawitter wrote: > Package: apt > Package: general package management > Version: up to 0.5.28.5 > > Hi there, > > I tried to put a collection of debian packages on a tomcat webserver along > with a Packages.gz for easy retrieval via apt-get. Other people also had the same problem, please take a look at http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2003/12/msg03445.html So, the question is: why is /dev/hdc owned by 'disk' in Sarge? Does it have to be so for some reason? Bug#212049: marked as done ("dependency" used backwards)
Your message dated Sat, 7 Oct 2006 12:51:13 +0200 with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line "dependency" used backwards has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: general Version: n/a? Debian seems to use the word "dependency" backwards a lot, making things confusing and hard to understand. Per the The American Heritage Dictionary (via http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=dependency), a dependency is: 1. Dependence. 2. Something dependent or subordinate. 3. A territory under the jurisdiction of a state of which it does not form an integral part. Note the "direction" of sense 2: If A depends on B, then A is a dependency (A is dependent on B). B is _not_ a dependency of A. In Debian (documentation, executable output, e-mail), uses of "dependency" in sense 1 are usually fine. However, uses in sense 2 are usually backwards (see bugs 212028, 212013, and especially 212034, which also shows how weak an understanding some Debian developers have of the word). Obviously, Debian documentation and tools (and developers) shouldn't use "dependency" backwards. (Well, that should be obvious, but if it isn't, consider the confusion it generates. Given the international nature of Debian, consider readers who aren't native speakers of English, trying to figure out what "dependency" means in English and then trying to figure out what Debian documentation/etc. is really saying.) Since merely using "dependency" correctly would be ambiguous given all the incorrect usage, Debian should probably refer to "depended-on package" (or library, etc., as the case may be). That construct would be unambiguous and perfectly clear (and wouldn't be much longer than "dependency"). Bug#388569: marked as done (general: always printed in letter format)

(NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: general Severity: important Sorry for reporting on this unspecific level, but i cannot isolate. Since updating to etch some weeks ago i was not able to print from firefox, because always letter format is requested on the printer panel. This happens independend of the input in the printer property fields in the printing dialog if firefox (where i entered "A4") and independend of the printer settings in cups (where i also use "A4") - see bug 383.255. First i thought this a specific problem of firefox, but now i have the same missbehaviour with xpdf, so i think it is a more general problem which i cannot identify. Both programms worked fine in sarge. The only help i can give, is that i can work around in both cases by printing to a file and remove the first line containing "/PageSize 3" with an editor and afterwards use lpr on the command line to print that modified postscript-file. Because i cannot think that this is the intended "new debian way of printing" and because a am happy with debian for years i dont want to change distribution because of this, but i also dont want to life with this situation for a long time. I use a standard gnome desktop installation and the Cups printing system. My printer is a HP Laserjet 4 plus. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: tcm Version: 2.20+TSQD-2.1 Severity: important Tags: patch Your package fails to build with G++ 4.1. I'm filing this bug as important for now, but when 4.1 will be the default compiler in unstable (probably in a few weeks) I'll upgrade this to serious. A patch is below. G++ 4.1 has shown some really horrible code in your software. You cannot just put a semi-colon in src/sd/bv/adsactivity.h to work around a bug that is somewhere completely else. This may have worked in 4.0, but now you get an error about an "extra ';'". It took me quite a while to figure out what was going on there... depending on what is included, this semicolon in sd/bv/adsactivity.h was helpful to work around that bug in another file, but if that file was not included, the semicolon would not terminate anything at all... hence the "extra ';'" error. I removed the semicolon and fixed the real bug in src/sd/bv/bvinstances.h. > Automatic build of tcm_2.20+TSQD-2.1 on bigsur by sbuild/mips 1.94 ... > /usr/bin/g++ -Wall -g -O2 -DCONFIG_INSTALL=\"/etc/tcm/\" > -DTCM_INSTALL_DIR=\"/usr\" -DTCM_INSTALL_LIB=\"/usr/lib/\" > -DTCM_INSTALL_SHARE=\"/usr/share/doc/tcm-doc/\" -DCONFIG_FILE=\"tcm.conf\" > -DHELP_DIR=\"/usr/share/doc/tcm-doc/help/\" -DCOLOR_FILE=\"colorrgb.txt\" > -DBANNER_FILE=\"banner.ps\" -I. -I/build/tbm/tcm-2.20+TSQD/src/bitmaps > -I/build/tbm/tcm-2.20+TSQD/src/gl -I/build/tbm/tcm-2.20+TSQD/src/ui > -I/build/tbm/tcm-2.20+TSQD/src/ed -I/build/tbm/tcm-2.20+TSQD/src/dg > -I/build/tbm/tcm-2.20+TSQD/src/tb -I/usr/X11R6/LessTif/Motif1.2/include > -I/usr/X11R6/include -I/usr/X11R6/include/X11 -I../dv -DLINUX -c > deletecolumnscmd.c > deletecolumnscmd.c: In member function 'virtual void > DeleteColumnsCmd::DetermineColumns()': > deletecolumnscmd.c:36: error: no matching function for call to > 'List::sort()' > /build/tbm/tcm-2.20+TSQD/src/gl/llist.h:93: note: candidates are: void > List::sort(int (*)(T, T)) [with T = CellColumn*] > make[3]: *** [deletecolumnscmd.o] Error 1 [a full listing of errors is attached] --- ./src/sd/dv/relationshipnode.h~ 2006-03-18 05:39:16.0 + +++ ./src/sd/dv/relationshipnode.h 2006-03-18 05:39:29.0 + @@ -26,6 +26,9 @@ class ERGraph; /// relationship (ER) node class. + +int CompareComponent(string *c1, string *c2); + class RelationshipNode: public Node { /[EMAIL PROTECTED]: {\large {\bf scope:} TERD} */ public: --- ./src/sd/dv/sqobjectnode.h~ 2006-03-18 05:41:20.0 + +++ ./src/sd/dv/sqobjectnode.h 2006-03-18 05:41:37.0 + @@ -28,6 +28,9 @@ class SQGraph; /// object class (TSQD) node class. + +int CompareAnchor(Point *p1, Point *p2); + class SQObjectNode: public Node { /[EMAIL PROTECTED]: {\large {\bf scope:} TSQD} */ public: --- ./src/sd/bv/adsactivity.h~ 2006-03-18 05:43:12.0 + +++ ./src/sd/bv/adsactivity.h 2006-03-18 06:00:48.0 + @@ -23,7 +23,7 @@ #include "llist.h" #include "lstring.h" -; + class ADSVar; class OutputFile; --- ./src/sd/bv/bvinstances.h~ 2006-03-18 06:03:19.0 + +++ ./src/sd/bv/bvinstances.h 2006-03-18 06:03:34.0 + @@ -49,7 +49,7 @@ #include "../sd/bv/scdtransitionedge.h" template class List; -template class List +template class List ; #ifdef MODELCHECK --- ./src/sd/bv/adshyperedge.c~ 2006-03-18 06:04:20.0 + +++ ./src/sd/bv/adshyperedge.c 2006-03-18 06:04:31.0 + @@ -33,7 +33,7 @@ cc=NULL; edgelist.add(e); sendevent=NULL; -}; +} bool ADSHyperEdge::AddProp(Prop *p){ for (propl.first();!propl.done();propl.next()){ --- ./src/tb/cellcolumn.h~ 2006-03-18 05:20:22.0 + +++ ./src/tb/cellcolumn.h 2006-03-18 05:20:39.0 + @@ -26,6 +26,9 @@ #include "tableviewer.h" /// (table) column class. + +int Compare(CellColumn *c1, CellColumn *c2); + class CellColumn: public CellVector { /[EMAIL PROTECTED]: {\large {\bf scope:} table} */ public: --- ./src/tb/cellrow.h~ 2006-03-18 05:33:59.0 + +++ ./src/tb/cellrow.h 2006-03-18 05:34:19.
