After some investigations, this bug turned out to be due to having
multiple screens one above the other.
Waiting for a proper fix, the workaround for this is to temporarily
switch off the secondary screen with xrandr (eg. `xrandr --output VGA
--off`).

Bug#476786: rsync fails to transfer /var/log/ntpstats/*

2008-04-19 Thread Laurent Caron
Package: rsync
Version: 2.6.9-2etch1
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

Hi,

I did notice that rsync fails to transfer some files (eg:
/var/log/ntpstats/*) and dies on files in that directory on any
non-initial run.

On the first run, it all goes well.

On the subsequent runs:

donald:~# rsync -aAzHRxby -vP --exclude='var/log/ntpstats' --numeric-ids
--suffix='' --backup-dir=/backup/local/gloups.lncsa.com/2008-04-YY
'gloups.lncsa.com:/{etc,var/log}'
/backup/local/gloups.lncsa.com/current

receiving file list ...
14452 files to consider

var/log/ntpstats/
var/log/ntpstats/loopstats

var/log/ntpstats/peerstats
8306 100% 14.97kB/s0:00:00 (xfer#12, to-check=172/14473)
zsh: segmentation fault rsync -aAzHRxby -vP --numeric-ids --suffix=''
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (120216 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(453)
[sender=2.6.9]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (447235 bytes received so far) [receiver]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(453)
[receiver=2.6.9]

If i now use an exclude (--exclude='var/log/ntpstats'), it finishes
without any problem.

I did use critical severity because, if you use rsync to make backups...
it can be messy to realize your backups are just useless.

Thanks

Laurent

You already used that exclude. At least you show you did, although the
output is not consistent with that.

> I did use critical severity because, if you use rsync to make backups...
> it can be messy to realize your backups are just useless.

It is always the administrator's responsibility to check that backups
are made successfully, hence I'm downgrading to "important".
If rsync failed silently, that might be cause for "critical".
Note that I used this version of rsync to backup 150 systems, and I
didn't came across this error. (Those systems have since been upgraded
to rsync 3.0.2.)

I did find something similar when testing the prerelease version of
3.0.0. Strange that you now came across it in 2.6.9...

As it's almost impossible to get a fix for bugs in the stable
distribution, I would like to ask you to try the backport version of
3.0.2, available via http://packages.debian.org/etch-backports/rsync .

Alternatively, if you want to help fix this bug in 2.6.9, you could
download http://debian.wurtel.net/i386/rsync and use that (it's
basically a 2.6.9_2etch2 built without optimization and not stripped).
First do "ulimit -c unlimited", and trigger the bug. You should then
have a core dump. Then do "gdb /path/to/rsync core" and "bt" to get the
stack backtrace. Alternatively make the core dump available to me.
Hopefully that would help pin down the cause of the error.

Thanks,
Paul Slootman

Any suggestion how to change it in something else? Or should we put the

One idea would be texlive-common ...

Please tell me quick because I am testing a new release of the texlive

Thanks for the bugreport!

I suspect the cause of this is sugar-artwork missing. Could you please
check if you have sugar-artwork installed, and if not see if doing so
makes the error go away.

Bug#476806: AssertionError when archiving empty maildirs

2008-04-19 Thread Julien Danjou
Package: archivemail
Version: 0.7.2-2
Severity: serious

Hi,

First of all, I'm making this bug serious since it breaks the software
for me, but feel free to downgrade.

Here's the problem:

% mkdir -p mailbox-test/{cur,new,tmp}
% archivemail -d 3 mailbox-test

Well, looking at the code I guess that mailbox.Maildir(mailbox_name) is
just giving nothing. I do not know if it's a bug or a change (maybe from
python2.5), but this used to work for years for me.

You are confusing me with your /var/lib/gallery2/g2data*. What
does "ls -la /var/lib/gallery2/" say?

Anyways ... I guess the problem is related to your datalocation and the
permissions. Gallery2 probably thinks your data is in g2data3847sj, but this
is just a symlink to g2data, isn't it?

With kind regards, Jan.

Hi!

Neither me or upstream are able to reproduce this.

Do you have a more specific way to reproduce it ?

First of all from ICQ NT and from the file menu inside X-Windows you neither

Upstream confirmed that this was an accident and not intentional hiding.

I'm attaching the 'official' fix from upstream SVN r2312.

Cheers,

Comments/Problems:

1. when trying to start graphical installer on a low memory system,
fallback to text-based installer does not work, system hangs for
ever.

2. cdrom drive (and harddisk) were not detected in step "detecting
cd-rom drive". There were no ide related modules loaded
automatically in this step, only usb-storage was loaded. When I
loaded ide_generic by hand on the second console, it worked, cdrom
drive and hard disk were detected.
In the past (etch) there were many modules loaded in this step...
Now only the one (usb-storage).

3. when it comes to partitioning the disk, I thought I could try the
guided partitioner. So I went back to "Load installer components
from CD", chose "partman-auto", again to partitioning disk, chose
"guided partitioning" -> use whole disk -> separate home-partition.
partman then presented me a partition table with two ext3 partitions
and one swap! Creating ext3 partitions on a low memory system
is not recommended, so automatic partitioner should not choose
ext3 as default in low memory installs.

4. the rest of the installation worked.

5. booting the new system didn't work:
ALERT! /dev/hda1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

   cat /proc/modules shows:
floppy
ohci_hcd
usbcore
thermal
processor
fan

So IMHO there are the ide modules missing in the initrd, too.

Kind regards
Holger

Package: inkscape
Version: 0.45.1-1.1
Severity: serious
Justification: no longer builds from source

Due to the change from Imagemagick to GraphicsMagick class calls within
Inkscape are no longer supported/met. Installing the previous
libmagick++9-dev and libmagick9-dev allow for all but the following
bitmap code to compile:

levelChannel.cpp
levelChannel.h
level.cpp
level.h

Without reinstalling these two prior dev packages and their accompanying
header files the build complete fails shortly after starting the build
process.

The current state is non-buildable in either scenario, with one showing
more progress than the other.

These changes to internal bitmap coding within Inkscape either requires
a newer experimental release of GraphicsMagick or a patch codeset from
Inkscape Team using an internally modified version of it's toolset.

Someone with more coding experience in C/C++ using GraphicsMagick with
a greater understanding of Inkscape internals could better resolve this
non-buildable scenario.

Code output from using libmagick++9-dev and libmagick9-dev:

extension/internal/libinternal.a(level.o): In function
`Inkscape::Extension::Internal::Bitmap::Level::applyEffect(Magick::Image*)':
/home/mdriftmeyer/DeveloperProjects/GTKProjects/Inkscape/buildInkscape/build/src/../../../inkscape/src/extension/internal/bitmap/level.cpp:23:

I just made an upload for this very issue on Monday, and that passed on by
pbuilder. I guess I have no choice but to try again and to hard-wire the
version of r-cran-robustbase.

A new r-cran-robustbase was built on Monday too. Could you reschedule
r-cran-fnonlinear?

With this it will happily remove pdmenu, while presenting a UI that
doesn't make that plain to the user. For more fun, could try libc6- ,
or some other library that will make apt unhappy. (I haven't tried that.)

With this is will install pdmenu from experimental (assuming sources.list is
set up). I think this syntax should be disallowed, along with the "=version"
syntax.

This installs all package names containing "p". Also, it demonstrates that
aptlinex exposes the posix regexp library to attackers. Any security hole
in that library can now be exploited over the web.

The best solution to all of these is probably to check that the package
name listed for installation is the name of an actual, existing package,

This one failed because r-cran-foptions failed because r-cran-robustbase was
not yet built.

Now that r-cran-robustbase has been rebuilt, we need to rebuild
r-cran-foptions and then rebuild r-cran-fasianoptions.

Package: aptlinex
Severity: normal

Hi,
looking at the code of aptlinex because of #476572 I
stumbled over another security issue:

Insecure temporary file usage in ModMain.module:
 90 IF User.Name <> "root" THEN
 91 'EXEC [graphicalSu(), "gambas-apt.gambas", User.Name, Buf] WAIT
 92 PRINT graphicalSu() & " gambas-apt.gambas " & user.Name & " " & Buf
 93 SHELL graphicalSu() & " gambas-apt.gambas " & user.Name & " " & Buf WAIT
 94 IF Exist("/tmp/gambas-apt-exec") THEN sExec =
File.Load("/tmp/gambas-apt-exec")
 95 TRY EXEC [sExec] WAIT
 96 RETURN
 97 END IF
 98
 99 TRY File.Save("/tmp/gambas-apt.lock", Application.Id)

Adding a symlink /tmp/gambas-apt.lock -> someimportant file an attacker could
overwrite any file on the system with the process id of aptline since this
process
runs as root.

The code before that looks like this would load gambas code from a file called
/tmp/gambas-apt-exec
and then execute it but I am not sure cause I have no real idea about gambas.

Kind regards
Nico

Bug#476588: [aptlinex] aptlinex

2008-04-19 Thread L. Redrejo
This mail is just to confirm the second bug that Nico discovered,
executing code from a file called /tmp/gambas-apt-exec.

There was not a bug number on Debian for this issue, but it has also
been fixed in the same upload that fixed #476588.

Regards.
José L.

Well, just not specific enough. It's a mess of dependencies as shown here:
 http://dirk.eddelbuettel.com/blog/2007/11/20#rmetrics_260.72

I'll backtrack and re-do it from the bottom-up. Will take a few days, but
it's the only way to do it.

Package: lyx
Version: 1.5.4-1
Severity: normal

Current lyx package crashes consistently and almost immediatly (either
new document, loading a document or the moment pressing the mouse inside
the document) with current qt4 packages (version 4.4.0~rc1-2).

downgrading to version 4.3.4 of the qt4 packages solves the problem.

I don't know at the moment if this just requires a lyx recompile or is a
source incompatability. Will try to test later on when I have the time.

During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on i386.

Build deps on a | b are not supported by sbuild, because they would

Hello,

the situation seems to be rather simple:

Currently we have two versions of lynx in unstable. Debian-Security is
not very happy about this. On top of that upstream tells us that the
version shipped in the package "lynx" is outdated and that only
lynx-cur should be shipped:

So we should not have a package lynx-cur in sid, and the package lynx

Bug#471160: removed smarty

Thank you for your patch. I've tested it and found that the embedded
smarty and adodb are still utilized, at least on upgrades. I added a
preinst file that handles the symlinking for upgrades and my Gallery
started throwing HTTP 500 errors (Internal Error). I'll do some further
testing to see if I can determine what the problem is.

Upstream Gallery is working on a new version that includes a fix for the
smarty issue. I agree that using the Debian packaged version is better
than embedding, but not at the expense of usability.

While you are at changing the place where LPPL text lives, I think that
you could just paste it *inside* the debian/copyright file, as mandated
by Debian Policy [1].

Package: miro
Version: 1.1.2-2
Severity: important
Usertags: ftbfs-gcc-4.3

Your package fails to build with GCC 4.3. Version 4.3 has not been
released yet but I'm building with a snapshot in order to find errors
and give people an advance warning. In GCC 4.3, the C++ header
dependencies have been cleaned up. The advantage of this is that
programs will compile faster. The downside is that you actually
need to directly #include everything you use (but you really should
do this anyway, otherwise your program won't work with any compiler
other than GCC). There's some more information about this at
http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-4.3/porting_to.html

You can reproduce this problem with gcc-4.3 or gcc-snapshot from
unstable.

Hi Raphael!

I downgrade the severity of this bug since turbogears is now installable
again. Your fix is still current though and I turn it into a patch
attached to this message. I have also removed the dependency for
python-elementtree since it is already contained in python-celementtree
dependencies.

Fair enough.

I am a debian-legal regular since 2004; however it seems that most
discussions about the drafting of LPPL v1.3 were held before I began
following the list. The only one I did quickly read (without actively
taking part) starts here:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/07/msg00079.html

I should really manage to find the time to take a look at the previous
discussions... :-(

Once again, fair enough.

Exactly, and the answer is: the GNU GPL *allows* you to start modifying
the Postscript code directly and treat it as source. Because it
actually *becomes* source, as soon as you start modifying it directly:
it's the preferred form for making further modifications to your
modified version of the document!

If there's a significant waste of space, you should advocate for
a /usr/share/common-licenses/LPPL-1.3 , rather than deliberately
violating Debian Policy.

Policy mandates that license texts are included in debian/copyright
(when not present in /usr/share/common-licenses/) for a number of good
reasons, IMHO, among which:
 * users should be able to read license terms in a standardized place
 * licensing info should be automatically retrievable, even before
installing the package (think about the "copyright" links in
packages.debian.org and packages.qa.debian.org pages)

At least, this is my opinion, but it seems to be shared by other people.

Cheers,

As I wrote, I don't see a obligatory machine-readable format. And as I
wrote, I consider it useless. Machines cannot understand the copyright
anyway.

So for me this is wasted time, better to do some more useful work and
actually *check* licenses (the catalogue needs many more changes).

And, Frank, the copyright is NOT auto generated, there is only *one*
copyright file for all packages. What you meant is the
debian/Licenses
file which we generate automatically from the liclines and th actual
files.

Uffa, have fun. If someone starts to contest/discuss the LPPL again, I
wil be off.

Double plus for Frank, right. Useles spent time. DEK tex was probably
one of the first big programs that are actually DFSG free ;-)

Best wishes

STURRY (n.,vb.)
A token run. Pedestrians who have chosen to cross a road immediately
in front of an approaching vehicle generally give a little wave and
break into a sturry. This gives the impression of hurrying without
having any practical effect on their speed whatsoever.

Package: openuniverse
Version: 1.0beta3.1-6
Severity: serious
Justification: non-free code in main

src/texfont.cpp and src/texfont.h contain this:

/* Copyright (c) Mark J. Kilgard, 1997. */

/* This program is freely distributable without licensing fees and is
provided without guarantee or warrantee expressed or implied. This
program is -not- in the public domain. */

This does not allow derived works (a requirement of DFSG 3).

2008-04-19 Thread Gary Phillips
Package: xserver-xorg-video-s3
Version: 1:0.4.1-5
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Digital Alpha PWS433au with 1GB RAM, Debian 4.0 (etch)
S3 Trio 64+ video card (which works on this hardware with both Windows
NT 4.0 and OpenVMS 8.3)
Whether manually configured or set up with Xorg -configure, when X is
run the display fills with random colored pixels, keyboard and mouse are
disabled, and machine must be rebooted in order to recover control. When
X is run with -probeonly, the only error it reports is "Unable to find
V_BIOS". When lspci -v is run, it reports that the Video ROM is present
but [disabled].

Bug#476105: istanbul: Recorded movies not usable--static areas of the screen are totally black

I can't reproduce it here, but I think I have a completely different
setup. Can you please check if this is related to #476722 (ie. you have
more than one screen attached, try to switch the secondary off via
xrandr).

Also, IIRC I've seen something similar happening some time ago when
using compiz. If you have it (or something similar, like beryl)
running, can you please switching it off and using a simpler wm?

Moreover, I see you're trying to record a fixed area of the screen. Does
the corruption happen independently of any width and height?
Can you please try to record a full-screen long-enough session, and see
if it fine?

Finally, please try to combine previous hints, and report if anything
changes.

This is probably related to a particular configuration, but before
downgrading I'd like to inspect it more deeply.

Cheers, Luca

Bug#476821: openoffice.org-voikko - FTBFS: build/oxt/META-INF/manifest.xml: No such file or directory

2008-04-19 Thread Harri Pitkänen

> > make[1]: Entering directory `/build/buildd/openoffice.org-voikko-2.2'

The command here should be
  mkdir -p build/oxt/META-INF
which leads me to believe that neither $(MKDIR) nor $(PS) (that should get
defined in /usr/lib/openoffice/sdk/settings/settings.mk) are properly
defined. This would be the case if platform detection fails in that file. The
detection is done by

  (...)
  # test for the platform
  PLATFORM := $(shell $(PRJ)/config.guess | cut -d"-" -f3,4)
  (...)
  ifeq "$(PLATFORM)" "linux-gnu"
  (...)

Maybe this does not work on s390?

In addition to this, you should make sure that $(UNOPKG_PLATFORM) gets defined
correctly as well. If it does not, the package may build but fail to work
when installed. (I know, we should test for empty values of these variables
and explicitly fail the build as needed. That will be done in the next
upstream release.)

Ignore my previous message; I saw the bug about cairo and applied the
workaround. :)

I've only got one monitor.

And I'm not using compiz or anything fancy like that.

No luck with a full-size session either.

In case it helps, I'm using an intel 965 onboard video (from my laptop).
The bug happens with the 'intel' Xorg driver, both version 2:2.2.1-2 and
2:2.2.99.903-1.

I think you've enough grounds to downgrade the bug, since it works for
you. :)

Bug#476806: AssertionError when archiving empty maildirs

That's a very weak reason for making a bug RC, especally when the bug is
that archivemail fails to move mail out of an already empty mailbox. And
I think you know it..

My general experience with over-inflating severities is that it either leads
to an overreaction by the maintainer in the other direction and/or encourages
the maintainer to waste time thinking about the severity, and writing text
like this about it, rather than spending time thinking about the bug.
Perhaps you've had some other experience?

The bug seems to be that under python 2.5, a mailbox.Maildir object that
is empty evaluates to a false value, while in previous versions of python,
the same object would evaluate to true:

if type == "maildir":
original = mailbox.Maildir(mailbox_name)

if original:
print "set"
else:
print "unset"

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~>python2.4 =archivemail -d 3 mailbox-test
set
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~>python2.5 =archivemail -d 3 mailbox-test
unset

I don't know enough python to say, but this looks rather like a bug or
incompatible change in python 2.5.

If so, this kind of change in python would certianly seem likely to break
lots of other stuff, so perhaps your severity isn't so inflated after all.
