Bug#476185: console-data: Fails to install due to errors debian file templates

2008-04-15 Thread Michael Rasmussen
"[..] I really encourage bug reporters to look at a package's BTS before
reporting RC bugs against it...:-)"

I actually did. Using reportbug does in fact show BTS, but
unfortunately this is limited to the version currently installed on
your system. Maybe reportbug could be extended to handle the situation
where a never version is waiting in queue/exits in the repository and
displaying this versions changelog. This could possible avoid a lot of
bug reports.

When did this change? The configuration worked in Etch. It would be
best for existing installations if it continued to work also in Lenny.
Can you set the defaults in munin-node to the same as it was in Etch?

Happy hacking,

Since it's broken on security.debian.org, it should be fixed there
and passed through to s-p-u.

Bug#476225: python-turbogears: Bad dependency on python-celementtree, uninstallable with python 2.5

2008-04-15 Thread Raphael Hertzog
Package: python-turbogears
Version: 1.0.4.3-1
Severity: serious

The package should not have a versioned dependency on python-celementtree.
python 2.5 provides python-celementree and can't satisfy the versioned
dependency... and since python-celementree is currently not installable
with python (>= 2.5) it makes python-turbogears uninstallable.

The right dependency is: python (>= 2.5) | python-celementtree (>= 1.0.5-6)

Bug#474891: reassign to libsdl-sound and ask for rebuild

2008-04-15 Thread Evgeni Golov
reassign 474891 libsdl-sound1.2-dev
retitle 474891 please rebuild libsdl-sound1.2 against new libspeex
thanks

libspeex currently droped it .la file (/usr/lib/libspeex.la) which is
still listed in /usr/lib/libSDL_sound.la. This leads to an FTBFS of our
package asc in unstable, as it cannot open libspeex.la during linking.
Locally rebuilding libsdl-sound makes libSDL_sound.la list -lspeex
instead of libspeex.la and asc can be build fine again.
A binNMU on all arches should be sufficient, however people have
suggested to drop .la files at all and stop libtool from doing
strange things :)

Evgeni

Bug#476224: gxneur: missing source files

2008-04-15 Thread Mike O'Connor
Package: gxneur
Version: 0.6.2-2
Severity: serious

The following files:
src/interface.c
src/interface.h
src/support.c
src/support.h

contain the header:

/*
 * DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE - it is generated by Glade.
 */

There are no glade source files included in the .orig.tar.gz from
which these files can be generated.

The license under which we are distributing this software (GPL V2)
requires that source code be made available for this software and
defines source code as "the preferred form of the work for making
modifications to it".

Checking the upstream svn repository with:

svn ls svn://xneur.ru:3690/xneur/gxneur

I see that the glade source files are available from upstream.

Neither - as should have been clear from my previous post (?), this is
about the xaralx package not being built for powerpc anymore. (Can't say
I agree with this way of dealing with code quality issues, but I guess
it's not my call)

If you want to discuss issues not related to xaralx, please remove

The proper patch to use is attached (it should supersede the one that
the security upload used before). It also has to be converted to dpatch
as stable uses dpatch whereas unstable uses quilt.

I see, pretty fast machine you use. Your build discovers a race where
make doesn't rebuild a specific target (auto_home.c) because the change
it depends on happens within one second I guess.

That is highly surprising. I built it in a pbuilder chroot before
uploading, and everything worked fine. The following hint doesn't seem
to point at this issue:

Because the problem is:

In other words, a TeX error, not a gcc error.

Also, according to buildd.debian.org/sketch, there is no problem on any
architecture (it's installed on all except sparc, where it's "building"
at this moment). If gcc-4.3 would be the problem, this would have
caused several of those to break as well.

David, do you have any idea what could be the problem?

By the way, I received a notice that a new upstream version was out as
well, so you could package that when fixing this.

Thanks,
Bas

Notice that the description speaks about a "mature" system, i don't
think that something so endian-buggy that it won't build on powerpc, and
probably not also on the other bigendian arches, should use the term
"mature" in its description.

Please forward to the list, as i can't post for obvious reasons.

Bug#476220: python-uno uninstallable in unstable due to python 2.5

Hi,

Hristo Hristov wrote:

That's not a valid comparison. ctypes is a module formerly external and
now in the python core.
That fix was about that it's only built for python2.4 now, which the
tools fail to understand.

> don't have to recompile openoffice.org on every change of python version.

A better comparison would be python-subversion (#446636) but afaik svn
does not use the python interpreter.

It's a decision to just support the default python and I won't change
that (at least not in the near future).

If you really want, you can file a wishlist bug, but it quickly will be
+wontfix.

Rene

Bug#476236: python2.4-babel: uninstallable with python 2.5

2008-04-15 Thread Adeodato Simó
Package: python2.4-babel
Version: 1.2.0.dfsg-1
Severity: serious

Hello.

python2.4-babel is uninstallable with python 2.5 (the current default in
unstable), and what is worse a rebuild won't fix it.

Assuming that your package works with python >= 2.5, and not only with
exactly 2.4, you should just build modules for all supported python
version -- or, maybe if these modules are just used by babel and not
by any third party program, just for the default python version.

For the latter, start by:

  * changing *every* instance of python2.4 to just "python" in your
debian/control and debian/rules file, including Package: python2.4-babel
  * changing the XS-Python-Version header to read "current", and dropping
XB-Python-Version completely

Maybe there'll be more bits, I'm not sure, but that should be a good
start.

Cheers,

N.B.: This bug need not be usertagged with "goal-python2.5", as babel is
not currently in testing. Lenny will release without babel if it doesn't
get fixed, though.

Package: python-celementtree
Version: 1.0.5-9
Severity: serious

Hello, guys.

Current packaging of python-celementtree doesn't allow for it to be
installed with default python being 2.5. This means that either it has
to be dropped for lenny, or fixed so that it is.

I think it should be fixed, because although the default for lenny will
be 2.5, 2.4 will be still supported for all I know. And being supported
means users would expect to be able to run their python2.4 applications
(which may make use of celementtree) without problems.

I'm not quite sure, though, how the packaging would need to change so
that this problem is addressed. Maybe the python-support maintainer
would know best.

Cheers,

Bug#476220: python-uno uninstallable in unstable due to python 2.5

2008-04-15 Thread Rene Engelhard
Hi,

Rene Engelhard wrote:

Reason:

$ dpkg -L python-uno

/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages
/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/pyuno.so

There's stuff in OOos dir. Which *DO* belong there and is linked to
libpythonX.Y. That would need some hackery to allow two versions of
those or conflicting between both or having the package linked against
both libpythonX.Ys or just ignoring the dependency on one libpythonX.Y.
Which I don't find very convincing.

Regards,

Rene

Bug#476242: Upgrades from Etch make fonts disappear

2008-04-15 Thread Damyan Ivanov
Package: libpdf-api2-perl
Version: 0.66-1
Severity: serious

Hi,

Today my PDF::API2-using application started to die due to missing
fonts. Looking closer, it appeared that /usr/share/perl5/PDF/API2/fonts/
is an empty directory, instead of a symlink to
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu.

The package does not ship DejaVu fonts since version 0.66-1, replacing
fonts/ directory with a symlink. However, when upgrading, dpkg won't
replace directories with symlinks, leaving an empty fonts/ directory.

This would break applications that were running fine on Etch.

Quoting Policy §6.6.4:
A directory will never be replaced by a symbolic link to a directory
or vice versa; instead, the existing state (symlink or not) will be
left alone and dpkg will follow the symlink if there is one.

To fix this, .postinst should be added, detecting an empty fonts/
directory and replacing it with a symlink. It would be nice if .prerm
detects downgrades to versions << 0.66-1 and replaces back the symlink
with an empty directory.

Severity: critical

Hi,
I'm reporting a bug I've encountered in kmail 1.9.7 (3.5.7). This bug
is
found in the kde bugzilla.
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=140660
Basically, KMail crashes (SIGSEGV) when applying filters. According to
upstream there is sometimes data loss. (I haven't noticed yet.)
KMail 1.9.5 (3.5.5) doesn't have this problem for me. (I'll have to
download
the .deb for this incase it disappears from the debian mirrors.)

Thanks for your work,
C.

It looks to me like there is a numerical error in the gcc-4.3 compiled version
of sketch, which passes an IEEE NAN to printf. I think it must be at least
partly an amd64 issue. I have not rebuilt the binary package with gcc-4.3 (needs
some chroot wizardry to get right), but

cd sketch-0.2.59
make CC=gcc-4.3
sketch -Dex070 ./Doc/manexamples.sk

works OK for me on i386 (i.e. no nan in the output).

It would be helpful if someone could try a gcc4.3 i386 build to narrow down the
possibilities. I will do that as my next step if no-one reports anything
before.

David

PS. new upstream version acknowledged.

Hello.

python-defaults 2.5 was recently uploaded to unstable, and nuauth-utils
is now uninstallable. I've checked, and a simple re-upload with no
changes fixed the problem.

However, it would quite important if you could at the same tim eupdate
the package not to become uninstallable each time the default python
version changes. There should be some howtos about that on
wiki.debian.org, and feel free to mail me or [EMAIL PROTECTED]
if you get stuck.

No, that's just part of the template, to explain that some issues might
be gcc 4.3-specific. I will clarify before the next rebuild.

i take a look into the sources of 'debian-edu-config' and it looks
like you give the "munin.conf" to the munin-node. Which is not
intendend :-). Are you sure that this ever worked?

Bug#476241: mt-daapd: CVE-2008-1771 integer overflow allowing remote DoS and possibly arbitrary code execution

2008-04-15 Thread Nico Golde
Package: mt-daapd
Version: 0.9~r1696-1.2
Severity: grave

Hi,
I found a security issue in mt-daapd:

This is an integer overflow leading to a heap-based buffer overflow in
the ws_getpostvars function.

>From src/webserver.c:
   707  int ws_getpostvars(WS_CONNINFO *pwsc) {
   708  char *content_length;
   709  unsigned char *buffer;
   710  uint32_t length;
   711  uint32_t ms;

   715  content_length = ws_getarg(&pwsc->request_headers,"Content-Length");

   722  length=atoi(content_length);
   723 ws_dprintf(L_WS_DBG,"Thread %d: Post var length: %d\n",
   724  pwsc->threadno,length);
   725
   726  buffer=(unsigned char*)malloc(length+1);

   739  if(!io_read_timeout(pwsc->hclient, buffer, &length, &ms)) {

   757
   758  if(!ws_getgetvars(pwsc,(char*)buffer)) {
759 /* assume error was set already */
   760  free(buffer);
   761  ws_dprintf(L_WS_LOG,"Could not parse get vars\n");
   762  return FALSE;
   763  }
   764
   765  free(buffer);

The relevant variable here is length, it is of type uint32_t. In line
715 content_length points to the user supplied Content-Length value in the HTTP
POST.
This value gets then converted to an integer using atoi in line 722.

Here integer conversion happens on negative values. A value of -1 will set
length to
UINT_MAX because length is of type uint32_t. Then the length value is used to
allocate space on the heap. Adding + 1 in the malloc call triggers an integer
overflow.
With a Content-Length: -1 the buffer size (UINT_MAX + 1) buffer size passed to
malloc
will be 0. This causes malloc to allocate the smallest possible chunk but it
does not fail.

In line 739 a timed read is done on the buffer. io_read_timeout() (from
src/io.c)
basically ends up calling io_read and reading length bytes into the buffer and
writing
the count of read bytes back to length. So there is a heap-based buffer
overflow here.

This corrupts the heap structure and leads to a server crash in line 765 when
freeing the
buffer which is now corrupted.

This is a remote DoS for _unauthenticated_ users and does possibly lead to
arbitrary code
execution

A very simple PoC attached.

CVE-2008-1771 was assigned to this, please mention this CVE id in the changelog
if you
fix this bug.

Kind regards
Nico

Nope. I am getting quite sure that the change done in svn 2008-04-04
never worked. The munin-node configuration was changed then, and this
seem to be when this problem was introduced.

I guess it need to be fixed there. On the other hand I would
recommend munin-node dying with an error instead of blocking the boot
when it encounter a bogus configuration file. It would have avoided
this problem.

Happy hacking,

BTW, I would appreciate some more useful information than just a RC bug

this is not a bug in python-twisted-core; it is known that the
installation of modules/plugins in two different directories in
sys.path breaks things. python-nevow must install in the same
location as python-twisted-core.

I am very sorry that you think fixing this was not needed. I dare to
disagree, as I expect those users to be able to build from source
packages.

In any case, you had a week to react to my NMU and I would have been
easily convinced to abort it had you stated your opinion on this.

Your work in Debian is appreciated.

I upgraded to etch long ago and now to lenny. It seems the old package
never got removed. It wouldn't be unless something conflicts with it.

Since I didn't do anything special nor skip any release I bet there
are many people that will run into this case.

Hi,

During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on i386.

This rebuild was done with gcc 4.3 instead of gcc 4.2, because gcc 4.3 is now
the default on most architectures (even if it's not the case on i386 yet).
Feel free to downgrade this bug to 'important' if your package is only built
on i386, and this bug is specific to gcc 4.3 (i.e the package builds fine with
gcc 4.2).

Bug#476173: Cloning for the unresolved part

I've note reopened #476173; #476173 remains closed, because it's indeed
fixed -- I've just *cloned* it into a separate bug report. This new bug
report is #476238, which is not RC anymore (just important).

So, as for why I've done that, the problem is what the title of this new
bug report says: "nuauth-utils ties itself to each python transition",
and it shouldn't. You should just tell python-support that your code
works with any python version, rather than only with "current".

I hope that was clearer, do not hesitate to bring up any issues that are
not clear enough.

Cheers,

Bug#476033: rcompgen: FTBFS: Error: Invalid DESCRIPTION file

2008-04-15 Thread Dirk Eddelbuettel

reassign 476033 ftp.debian.org
retitle 'rcompgen obsoleted upstream and to be removed from unstable'
severity 476033 normal
thanks

The code from the source package 'rcompgen' has been integrated into the
source package 'r-base' as per the r-base version 2.7.0 ("R 2.7.0"). In other
words, the core parts of GNU R have absorbed what was at first an add-on
package rcompgen.

With that, the add-on package is no longer needed, and that is why the build
is also made to fail as seen below.

The rcompgen package should stay in testing and stable as those versions will
continue to work with R releases prior to R 2.7.0 (of which we now have a
pre-release in unstable).

Thanks, Dirk

What version of Linux were you running when you upgraded grub, the new one
or the old one?

If you were running the old one, just run update-grub again.

(btw I suppose we'll need to mention this in the release notes... so keep the

Bug#476274: spambayes: seems to break completely after Python transition

2008-04-15 Thread Drake Wilson
Package: spambayes
Version: 1.0.4-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

(This has caused data loss for me, but it wasn't purely spambayes's
fault; my local MDA scripting wasn't as robust as it should have
been.)

SpamBayes appears to refuse to run at all with the newly-upgraded
Python. I gather it only installs itself into the Python 2.4
directories... ?

Yes.

I don't know htdig enough to decide whether it's worth it or if these
files are recreated when reindexation takes place.

Bug#476280: gvfs-fuse: operations on fuse mount directory usually return ENOTCONN

2008-04-15 Thread brian m. carlson

Package: gvfs-fuse
Version: 0.2.3-1
Severity: grave

The first time I mount a gvfs volume, everything is fine. However,
about halfway through trying to rescan my collection[0], exaile starts
providing error messages about "Transport endpoint is not connected".
Starting from that point, any operation on ~/.gvfs fails. This happens

regardless of whether the mounts have been unmounted and remounted, or
any other condition.

As an example:

lakeview ok % df -h

df: `/home/bmc/.gvfs': Transport endpoint is not connected

[0] Part of the collection is on a gvfs fuse mount on another computer.
The mount used is sftp.

Date: Sat Feb 23 15:23:57 2008 -0800

futex: runtime enable pi and robust functionality

To the stable tree (went in for 2.6.24.4). This breaks parisc because
we weren't set up to process NULL as a futex cmpxchg address. We
found and fixed the bug upstream as:

commit c20a84c91048c76c1379011c96b1a5cee5c7d9a0
Author: Kyle McMartin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Sat Mar 1 10:25:52 2008 -0800

[PARISC] futex: special case cmpxchg NULL in kernel space

but, because we didn't know tglx had requested a backport, the fix
wasn't backported to stable.

I'll send the necessary patch into stable, but to get parisc working
again on debian it has to be applied on top of the current kernel.

NOTE: This bug was introduced into 2.6.24.4; 2.6.24.3 doesn't have it.

Subject: [PARISC] futex: special case cmpxchg NULL in kernel space

Commit a0c1e9073ef7428a14309cba010633a6cd6719ea added code to futex.c
to detect whether futex_atomic_cmpxchg_inatomic was implemented at run
time:

+   curval = cmpxchg_futex_value_locked(NULL, 0, 0);
+   if (curval == -EFAULT)
+   futex_cmpxchg_enabled = 1;

This is bogus on parisc, since page zero in kernel virtual space is the
gateway page for syscall entry, and should not be read from the kernel.
(That, and we really don't like the kernel faulting on its own address
 space...)

Justification: FTBFS on i386

Hi,

During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on i386.

This rebuild was done with gcc 4.3 instead of gcc 4.2, because gcc 4.3 is now
the default on most architectures (even if it's not the case on i386 yet).
Feel free to downgrade this bug to 'important' if your package is only built
on i386, and this bug is specific to gcc 4.3 (i.e the package builds fine with
gcc 4.2).

Bug#476287: user strings spread confusion about contrib & non-free

2008-04-15 Thread Robert Millan
Package: gnome-app-install
Version: 0.5.2.5-1
Severity: serious
Tags: patch

User strings in this program seem to be spreading confusion about contrib
and non-free (and their relationship to Debian). In case of doubt, refer
to Social Contract #5: "The packages in these areas are not part of the
Debian system". By virtue of being a package installer shipped by Debian,
these strings have an assertive meaning (rather than merely descriptive) which
is in contradiction with the Social Contract.

Some examples:

  - "Show all Debian applications which can be freely used, modified and
distributed." -- this implies there exist Debian applications which cannot
be freely used, modified or distributed.
  - "[3rd party apps] are not part of Debian" -- by omission, this implies
contrib & non-free are.
  - "%s is part of the Debian main distribution" -- redundancy

I'm attaching a patch that TTBOMK fixes all of them.

Hi,

During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on i386.

This rebuild was done with gcc 4.3 instead of gcc 4.2, because gcc 4.3 is now
the default on most architectures (even if it's not the case on i386 yet).
Feel free to downgrade this bug to 'important' if your package is only built
on i386, and this bug is specific to gcc 4.3 (i.e the package builds fine with
gcc 4.2).

Bug#463011: update also for etch?

2008-04-15 Thread David Ehle

Hello,

I would like to second this request that a security update be put in place
for etch. While I was not able to actually "shoulder surf" a forwarded X
application, the bug does seem to stop X apps from running remotely when
the conditions are met, (netcat or VNC) so it might technically qualify as
a DOS attack.

Also this bug is in the list of vulnerabilities that Scanners catch now so
I'm getting pressure to address it on our Stable systems... I'd much
rather do it the debian way via a package from security.

Is there any idea if or when the update will occur?

Thanks!!

Package: srtp
Version: 1.4.4~dfsg-1
Severity: serious
Justification: makes FTBFS too hard to debug, because they need to be
reproduced in detail on each arch

Please kill the `>/dev/null' done by `make runtest'. This trashes
valuable information to debug the FTBFS you have on various
architectures, especially to deduce if they are the same on a set of
arches.

Bug#476290: libvirt: FTBFS on arches without qemu

2008-04-15 Thread Adeodato Simó
Package: libvirt
Version: 0.4.2-2
Severity: serious
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertags: goal-python2.5

Hello.

With qemu now in libvirt's Build-Depends, the package FTBFS on arches
where there is no qemu.

I guess you'll have to add '[amd64 i386 powerpc sparc]' to the qemu
Build-Dependency.

Thanks,

Sure, I seen this. They exists in svn, but don't used in building, and
aren't provided in tarball. (To not build-depend on glade, I think.)

Do you think, we need to provide such files in debian source package?
This is paranoid a bit, but yes, you should be right. Ok, I'll include
thees files in next upload.

They will be newly created in /var/lib by the postinst if they do not exist
there, so that part of the transition is sound. Simply adding:

  # These files were moved to
  rm -f /etc/htdig/root2word.db
  rm -f /etc/htdig/synonyms.db
  rm -f /etc/htdig/word2root.db

to the postinst should be sufficient.

Jan,

Thanks a lot for your research and for hunting down this bug. I'll wait
for the qt4 -4 upload and try building qbrew again. If this does not
work, I'll use the patch you've provided.

Again, thank you very much.

Bug#474951: Reverting to 1.4.13-4etch6

2008-04-15 Thread Shane McChesney
In case anyone else who finds this thread is like me, in the
not-realy-a-sysadmin category... Scott mentioned this above but
here's how I actually did the temporary solution of going back a version.

dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/lighttpd_1.4.13-4etch6_i386.deb

The good folks in #debian helped me out, since I didn't know how.

Bug#476295: java-gnome: pango_context_new, pango_font_map_get_shape_engine_type implicitly converted to pointers

2008-04-15 Thread dann frazier
Package: java-gnome
Version: 4.0.6-1
Severity: serious
Usertags: implicit-pointer-conversion

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that is likely to
cause your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a
pointer is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

Function `pango_context_new' implicitly converted to pointer at
generated/bindings/org/gnome/pango/PangoContext.c:34
  Function `pango_font_map_get_shape_engine_type' implicitly converted to
pointer at generated/bindings/org/gnome/pango/PangoFontMap.c:120

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.
For more information, see [2].

The prototypes for both pango_context_new and
pango_font_map_get_shape_engine_type are both wrapped in an #ifdef
PANGO_ENABLE_BACKEND in their respective header files. Perhaps
defining this at compile time would solve this?

Though it is guaranteed that this codepath will cause a segfault on certain
architectures, it is not guaranteed that this codepath would ever be executed
(e.g., if the returned pointer is never dereferenced). However, this bug
does prevent the ia64 buildd from successfully building this package, resulting
in a practical FTBFS issue and warranting the serious severity.

Well... nobody cared for answering to my message.

And the code isn't exposed so we won't try and make an updated version
for stable.
