I am having a similar problem here using Debian (Sid/Unstable) using an ATI Radeon 9000 on a 32 bit IBM compatible computer. The VLC player shows the first frame and does not proceed any further. On the same machine mplayer2 works just fine and plays the same video. There must be something different in the way that the vlc player and mplayer2 handle the video. Maybe it would be useful if vlc could be configured to use the mplayer2 video handling code.
Bug#672972: Wheezy: VLC player can't play videos
FWIW: I noticed a similar problem on a third party Hewlett Packard machine using an Intel based graphics chipset. Again other video players work fine on the same machine.

Bug#628454: Cambridge Silicon Radio - HCI Timeout following bluez upgrade
Nobuhiro Iwamatsu wrote: > I am tested on Cambridge Silicon Radio. Work fine. > Linux xps-iwamatsu 2.6.38-2-amd64 #1 SMP Sun May 8 13:51:57 UTC 2011 > x86_64 GNU/Linux I noticed that some of the 2.6.38 release candidates partially worked with the older bluez, and so did 2.6.39-1. As I upgraded bluez it stopped working with 2.6.39-1. There must be something tickling the bug between versions. Maybe the newer version of bluez works with 2.6.38.2, but not 2.6.39-1, or maybe it works on an AMD64 based computer (as Nobuhiro reported), but not on an IA32 machine. I wonder if there is some sort of facility that enables us to log requests and responses to and from the usb device, so we can compare operations across systems. Bug#511827: cannot paste into leafpad from same instance of leafpad using primary buffer
What seems to be happening is this: Select a piece of text for copying. Now a middle click paste will work only if the text is still highlighted. Unclicking the selected text appears to clear the buffer, making the middle click paste not work. The buffer should not be cleared unless another selection has been made to overwrite it, so one a selection is made, it should remain available for paste, regardless of whether the selection is highlighted or not. Bug#503360: iceape-browser: composer sometimes produces a flickering menu, when rightclick is applied
Package: iceape-browser Version: 1.1.12-1 Severity: normal When using Mozilla Composer, by applying a rightclick event to a link or selected text within a composed page, sometimes this produces a flickering menu. This looks like the menu is popping up and down rapidly, and the menuitem under the mouse cursor keeps changing, which besides the menu being barely readable, it is not always possible to determine which menuitem will be selected when the click event is applied. This problem is intermittent, so I do not know the exact details of when this occurs, however it appears to be something to do with the position of the link on the screen, by scrolling the page up or down, this problem can sometimes be alleviated, however, if mozilla composer is being run in a window that fills the screen (which it normally is), and the link being edited is at the bottom of the document, it is not possible to scroll down to alleviate this problem, and the problem remains. My screen runs at a resolution of 800x600 (SVGA), if that matters, for the purpose of replicating this problem. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-486 Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages iceape-browser depends on: ii libatk1.0-01.22.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc6 2.7-14GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.6.4-6.1 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libfontconfig1 2.6.0-1 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.3.7-2 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgcc11:4.3.2-1 GCC support library ii libglib2.0-0 2.16.6-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-02.12.11-3 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libhunspell-1.2-0 1.2.6-1 spell checker and morphological an ii libjpeg62 6b-14 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libnspr4-0d4.7.1-4 NetScape Portable Runtime Library ii libnss3-1d 3.12.0-5 Network Security Service libraries ii libpango1.0-0 1.20.5-2 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpng12-0 1.2.27-2 PNG library - runtime ii libstdc++6 4.3.2-1 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 2:1.0.3-7 X11 client-side library ii libxft22.1.12-3 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxinerama1 2:1.0.3-2 X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxrender11:0.9.4-2 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt6 1:1.0.5-3 X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 compression library - runtime Versions of packages iceape-browser recommends: pn iceape-gnome-support (no description available) Versions of packages iceape-browser suggests: pn iceape-dom-inspector (no description available) pn iceape-mailnews(no description available) pn latex-xft-fonts(no description available) ii libkrb53 1.6.dfsg.4~beta1-4 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#503863: iceape-browser: rightclick block images - no corresponding unblock
Package: iceape-browser Version: 1.1.12-1 Severity: minor When viewing a website, there is a rightclick menu option "Block Images from This Server". However, there is no corresponding "Unblock Images from This Server" option in the rightclick context menu. This is because the "Block Images from This Server" option appears when the mousepointer is positioned over an image. However, if images are blocked, there are no images, and therefore it is not possible to unblock them using a rightclick. A fix would be to add "Unblock Images from This Server" into the rightclick menu, whenever images are blocked. Bug#506345: linux-image-2.6-486: Facility to allow falsified information in /proc/cpuinfo
Package: linux-image-2.6-486 Version: 2.6.26+16 Severity: wishlist It would be useul to have the facility to provide a generic entry in /proc/cpuinfo rather than revealing processor specific information. This could possibly be done via a boot option, such as cpuinfo=486 or cpuinfo=pentium This would enable the computer to act as a generic base level computer for a specific architecture, providing backward compatibility with lower level machines. This would enable a machine to appear as a generic 486 machine or as a generic Pentium machine, without revealing the machine is actually a higher level machine 686 machine (or using an IBM compatible processor, supplied by an alternative manufacturer such as a Cyrix 686, or an AMD K6 or AMD K7.) One of the problems that I am encountering is that build and runtime systems appear to be taking information from /proc/cpuinfo, and this is influencing compiler or program behaviour. All of my machines are using 486 (IA-32) compatible processors. However, not all machines are true 486 machines. I have 586, 686 and K7 series processors on some machines, and the processors are made by various manufacturers (such as Intel, Cyrix and AMD.) I require all machines to behave with "lowest common denominator" behaviour, and for all compiled binaries to be generic enough to move across machines. I am finding that distribution provided binaries, and third party provided build scripts are detecting that the machine doing the build is a 686, and is utilizing features for that architecture, even though the target architecture is generic 486. I know that a workaround for this would be to modify all of the build scripts in every single package, and find a way of rebuilding the entire Debian distribution from source, but I feel that a falsified /proc/cpuinfo would be much less of a headache. I propose that the boot time switch cpuinfo=pentium provides the following falsified information in /proc/cpuinfo: vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 5 model : 2 model name : Pentium 75 - 200 Maybe the vendor_id, model and model name could be simply be set to "Unknown" or "Generic" if the boot switch is used. I am not sure what effect this would have, but hopefully it would mean generic behaviour. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Damn!! We have chosen a 486 build level for compatibility across all machines i486 or higher. When building packages using ./configure, the autoconf tool reports: checking build system type... i686-pc-linux checking host system type... i686-pc-linux I believe that this is not correct and should read: checking build system type... i486-pc-linux checking host system type... i486-pc-linux Using a level above our selected build level, may produce compatibility problems if the compiled packages are moved to a 486 machine, or to other machines compatible with, but higher than our i486 build level, and indeed higher than our installed system level. Bug#505855: xfe starts with window trims outside of displayable screen area
Package: xfe Version: 1.04-2.1 Severity: minor I am using the jwm window manager and my display screen is at 800 x 600 pixel resolution. When I start the xfe filemanager, the application appears to be running full screen, and there are no visible window trims or titlebar. This is because the application is using the full height and width of the display, including space that would normally be occupied by the trims. Bug#505859: nfs-kernel-server: Extended account squashing using a number
Package: nfs-kernel-server Severity: wishlist This is an idea to extend account squashing using a numerical parameter. Currently only the root account can be squashed. However, we could extend this facility by using a numeric option added to the /etc/exports file. For example: /foobar 10.0.0.0/18(rw,squashbelow=14) This would squash all accounts numbered 14 or below. This option could still be used with the no_root_squash option: /foobar 10.0.0.0/18(rw,squashbelow=14,no_root_squash) Here, accounts 1 to 14 are squashed, but the root account (0) is not squashed. Bug#509333: vsftpd discloses whether usernames are valid or not
Package: vsftpd Severity: grave Tags: security Justification: user security hole The vsftpd daemon discloses whether usernames supplied by the client are valid or not. On connection to the server via a client, if an invalid username is supplied, a 530 error is immediately returned, instead of a password prompt being returned before failure. Here is a sample session: ftp despina Connected to despina.markhobley.yi.org 220 Welcome to vsftpd server daemon Name (despina:mark): shaggy 530 Permission denied. <--- We should prompt for password Login failed. before failing here. By prompting for a password, the user would not know whether the username or the password is invalid. If the user has a valid password, then he probably has the associated username information, and thus a valid login. If on the other hand, a hacker is guessing, which I reckon is more likely, we are feeding him username validation. (In my case, the default behaviour is less secure than the proposed revision.) Bug#524709: Switch to prompt for manual overriding of all autoconf decisions
Package: autoconf Version: 2.61-8 Severity: wishlist This is a proposal to include an additional switch in configure scripts that can be used to override all autoconf made decisions. This would give the system builder greater control of the build. This is particularly useful for builders that are building on one machine for deployment on other machines, where decisions made by autoconf are not necessarily appropriate. By including an additional switch for manual override, we could prompt the system builder for decisions: Here is a traditional autoconf build: ../configure checking build system type... i486-pc-linux-gnu checking host system type... i486-pc-linux-gnu checking target system type... i486-pc-linux-gnu checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c checking whether ln works... yes checking for gcc... gcc Here is a alternative functionality that would be provided by the proposed switch: ../configure --manual Type new value or press enter to accept default. checking build system type [i486-pc-linux-gnu]: checking host system type [i486-pc-linux-gnu]: checking target system type [i486-pc-linux-gnu]: foo32-bar-rhubarb-bsd checking for a BSD-compatible install... Bug#524709: Switch to prompt for manual overriding of all autoconf decisions
> From: Ralf Wildenhues > Please consider > - using the right configure switches to enable > cross-compilation if that is an issue for you, > Both issues are extensively discussed in the Autoconf > manual. I am aware of this. Unfortunately, some decisions are still made automatically, and need overriding. The number of build options available is less than the number of decisions being made. This is a major problem when buildstrapping and scratch building, where you need to know that a package will build on a target machine that does not yet exist, and the target machine has some configuration differences to the current build machine (In my case, the same architecture, but a modified operating system, for example, a different shell, a different awk tool, a different Native Language Support handler, etc, etc.). The autoconf tool may decide to use particular shell tools, or facilities to package build that will not exist on the target. This means that I have no way of knowing whether a package will rebuild on the target, because it did not build using the same facilities on the test host. This means that if I have to modify a package source, and it becomes broken on the target, I have no way of knowing whether the breakage is as a result of my modification, or whether the breakage was already there, and the package would not have built anyway, even before my modifications were made. If I had full control of the autoconf process, this would be a lot easier. At the moment, I am having to try and reverse engineer squillions and squillions of pages of autoconf generated junk, to try and track down build decisions, in the hope of creating an override. And to compound the problem, the junk is not in a central location, but within each package. So I make a modification on one set of build scripts for one package, and I have to start all over again to make the same modification on another set of build scripts. (I wish we had scripts in a central shared location, so modifying one script, is global.) It would be nice to have full control, of the build process without having to try and reverse engineer squillions of pages of generated junk (of which only some is actually relevant to my platform). Bug#528255: iceape-composer: right click context menu shrinks to scrollable
Package: iceape-browser Version: 1.1.14-1 Severity: minor I am using iceape-composer, and I am editing tables. When I right click a cell within the table, I notice that the menu that appears sometimes has its bottom options missing and a downward scroll arrow appears at the bottom of the menu. This occurs, even though there is sufficient space to display the missing options, making the downward scroll unnecessary. Note that this does not occur all the time, and behaviour depends on the position of the cell on the screen. The problem was observed when editing a table cell in the middle of the screen. Note that "flickering menus" (#503360) may also occur when performing a similar edit. My screen is 800 x 600 (SVGA), and the problem has been observed on both the the icewm and jwm window mananger. Bug#540074: netfilter leaking traffic when long chains defined
Hello Bastian. Re: Bug#540074: netfilter leaking traffic when long chains defined Sorry for the delay. For some reason I did not get a copy of your email, and I just found your messages on an internet archive. tcp 0 0 10.0.0.8: 118.168.141.172:3388 ESTABLISHED This is an established connection. No evidence where the packets come from. Right. Port is a listening port (in this case listening for http requests (provided by didiwiki), so presumably the host at 118.168.141.172 made a connection, even though it is not in the address whitelist, as far as I can tell. For details of configuration scripts and test data, refer to bug #534963 This is not nearly complete. Please show the _complete_ config. That is the complete configuration, as far as I can tell. What element of the configuration do you believe is missing? > please use a sniffer and record the packets going through. The service port is being used frequently by computers on the internal LAN. I have tcpdump that I could use here, but I only want to log only packets coming in externally (ie not coming from 10.0.0.*) for the purpose of this report. Do you know of a way of achieving that or is there another sniffer that you suggest that I use? Thanks in advance. Bug#540074: netfilter leaking traffic when long chains defined
Right, I am trying to capture some traffic using: tcpdump -f -xx '( port 8000 ) and (( ! src net 10.0.0.0/8 ) or ( ! dst net 10.0.0.8 ))' This will capture traffic from the live system, which is using service port 8000, rather than test port , which is from test. (On the live system the service port number is 8000, rather than , and the script has been modified to reflect this). netstat -a reveals: tcp0 0 neptune.markhobley:8000 118-168-141-172.dy:3388 ESTABLISHED I am not getting any output against host 118.168.141.172 after an interval of 10 minutes. I was expecting to see some kind of "keep alive" here, or the connection to timeout (via the idle timer) and close. I am not seeing this via tcpdump. Does that occur at a lower level than tcpdump? I am getting malicious traffic showing from other hosts, but unfortunately tcpdump logs the traffic before the filter, so this has to be ignored. It would be useful here, if I could log only traffic that passes the filter. Can I do this? Currently to determine traffic passing the filter, I have to look for an incoming packet that causes a response from the application. These are infrequent, but I expect to find one over a period of several days. I will try and rig this up for permanent monitoring, and post a follow up over the next few days. Here is what I did: I set the proxy server settings manually using: Menu: Edit, Preferences, Advanced, Tab: Network, Button: Settings When I exit Mozilla, the settings are saved as user_pref in .mozilla/firefox/indeterminatefilename.default/prefs.js I now: grep "proxy" .mozilla/firefox/indeterminatefilename.default/prefs.js I paste the output into /etc/iceweasel/pref/iceweasel.js and change user_pref to lockPref And hey ... the proxy server settings are now locked for all users :) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#546445: revised m4sh.m4 may be ineffective
Examining the /usr/share/autoconf/m4sugar directory, it appears that there is a frozen m4sh.m4f file. Looking at the autoconf package, I guess that these are generated by the autoconf-2.63/lib/m4sugar/Makefile, because they are mentioned in the Makefile.am file as follows: nodist_m4sugarlib_DATA = version.m4 m4sugar.m4f m4sh.m4f ## -- ## ## The frozen files. ## ## -- ## m4sugar.m4f: $(m4sugar_m4f_dependencies) m4sh.m4f: $(m4sh_m4f_dependencies) include ../freeze.mk Deleting /usr/share/autoconf/m4sugar/m4sh.m4f causes the updated m4sh.m4 to take effect. It would be better for frozen files to be placed in /var/cache/autoconf and then make used to rebuild them in the event that the m4 sources in /usr/share/autoconf become newer. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#499348: /usr/bin/iceape: browser searches for a URL instead of jumping to it
Package: iceape-browser Version: 1.1.11-1 Severity: normal File: /usr/bin/iceape The browser exhibits really annoying behaviour of searching for a URL (in google), rather than jumping to the URL. If a URL is typed in the address bar, the browser should always jump to the address. For example, lets visit: http://history.perl.org/PerlTimeline.html Ok, we scroll down the page to: Perl 1.000 is unleashed upon the world. Rightclick the link for Perl 1.000 and "open link in new window" The file "perl-1.0.tar.gz" is of type application/x-tar and Iceape does not know how to handle this file type. Button: Cancel The address bar now contains: http://history.perl.org/src/perl-1.0.tar.gz Hightlight and cut "perl-1.0.tar.gz", so that address bar now contains: http://history.perl.org/src/ Press Enter to visit the URL. The browser jumps to: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=http%3A%2F%2Fhistory.perl.org%2Fsrc%2F&b%2F&btnG=Google+Search&meta= It should have gone to: http://history.perl.org/src/ Repeat this three times. Each time the browser jumps to: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=http%3A%2F%2Fhistory.perl.org%2Fsrc%2F&b%2F&btnG=Google+Search&meta= instead of to the address in the address bar. Now close down the browser, and go to a blank page. Now type the following in the address bar: http://history.perl.org/src/ Press enter, the browser goes to the address typed. This shows that the problem is with the browser and not the website: If URL addresses are pasted into the address bar, the browser submits the pasted URL to Google, instead of jumping to the address. Bug#497304: general: packages cannot be partially installed
Package: general Severity: wishlist There is an annoying flaw in the design of the Debian package management system, which means that packages cannot be partially installed. This limits the flexibility of Debian based systems when it comes to mixed installations or installation on embedded or resource constrained systems. For any particular package, the full set of binary components, optional documentation, and unused foreign language support files will be installed by the package management system. This flaw also means that components of bundled packages, such as the coreutils suite cannot be individually selected or omitted. This is particularly annoying if the system installer wants to replace one of the components with a customized version. A fix would be to make it possible to select individual files for installation from within a package. Other work includes splitting packages into daughter packages, the parent package being dependent on all daughters, but allowing the option of just selecting individual daughter packages, eg: coreutils depends on coreutils-fileutils and coreutils-fileutils depends on coreutils-fileutils-head, coreutils-fileutils-split etc, etc. Possibly introduce a packaging policy (this is a draft): Each stand alone binary file should be individually packaged, rather than bundled with other stand alone binary files. It is policy that internationalized (non-english) components are packaged separately to the core package. For example, a package foobar, would have its french documentation in a separate foobar-fr package. Packages should not install cruft on the system. This means that a package should not install a foreign language file, unless the system has been explicitly configured to support that foreign language.
