Bug#693622: Cursor is below bottom of window using web forms

2012-11-18 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: iceweasel
Version: 16.0.1-1
Severity: normal

When filling in a web form, when the cursor reaches the bottom of the window,
it moves below the range of the visible window, rather than scrolling to
reveal the line being typed.

Resizing the window and moving the scrollbars has no effect and does not
reveal the cursor.

This was observed on an 800x600 display when composing a mail message using
Yahoo mail. The window manager is icewm, if that matters.

Mark.

Bug#683787: Missing horizontal scrollbar

2012-08-03 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: iceweasel
Version: 12.0-4
Severity: normal

Sometimes the iceweasel browser does not produce a horizontal scrollbar
even though the page being viewed is wider than the browser window. At other
times the scrollbar will appear when viewing the same website.

Point the browser at http://www.national-lottery.co.uk/

Sometimes a scrollbar appears at the bottom. Other times it does not.
Toggling the stylesheet on and off as follows may cause the missing scrollbar
to magically appear:

Menu, View, Page Style, No Style, Menu, View, Page Style, Basic Style

Bug#672972: Wheezy: VLC player can't play videos

2012-12-02 Thread Mark Hobley
I am having a similar problem here using Debian (Sid/Unstable) using an ATI
Radeon 9000 on a 32 bit IBM compatible computer.

The VLC player shows the first frame and does not proceed any further. On the
same machine mplayer2 works just fine and plays the same video.

There must be something different in the way that the vlc player and mplayer2
handle the video. Maybe it would be useful if vlc could be configured to use
the mplayer2 video handling code.

Bug#672972: Wheezy: VLC player can't play videos

2012-12-05 Thread Mark Hobley
FWIW: I noticed a similar problem on a third party Hewlett Packard machine
using an Intel based graphics chipset. Again other video players work fine on
the same machine.

Bug#571304: apt keeps trying to add packages that not selected for installation

2010-02-28 Thread Mark Hobley

Oops! Sorry. I meant Lenny.

I was actually running it through dselect.

I would first select:

1: (U)pdate list of available packages

followed by:

3: (I)nstall and upgrade wanted packages

This would keep adding those packages to the list.

Right. I will have a look at those.

Bug#628454: Cambridge Silicon Radio - HCI Timeout following bluez upgrade

2011-06-04 Thread Mark Hobley
Nobuhiro Iwamatsu wrote:

I noticed that some of the 2.6.38 release candidates partially worked with the
older bluez, and so did 2.6.39-1. As I upgraded bluez it stopped working with
2.6.39-1. There must be something tickling the bug between versions. Maybe the
newer version of bluez works with 2.6.38.2, but not 2.6.39-1, or maybe it works
on an AMD64 based computer (as Nobuhiro reported), but not on an IA32 machine.
I wonder if there is some sort of facility that enables us to log requests and
responses to and from the usb device, so we can compare operations across
systems.

Mark.

Bug#640865: Images load automatically, even though image loading is disabled

2011-09-07 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: iceweasel
Version: 7.0~b4-1
Severity: important

There is a bug in the beta version of iceweasel 7, which causes images to be
downloaded, even though image loading is disabled. This can be a problem for
people on metered internet, who have to pay extra for image downloading.

Edit, Preferences, Content, Load images automatically: Unticked, Button: Close

Now visit:

http://www.google.co.uk

Type: giraffe

Images of giraffes appear in the search results. Click on images in the google
toolbar, all of the images appear. None are blocked.

This problem did not occur with version 5, and appears to be a bug introduced
into the new beta.

Bug#511827: cannot paste into leafpad from same instance of leafpad using primary buffer

2011-09-10 Thread Mark Hobley
What seems to be happening is this:

Select a piece of text for copying. Now a middle click paste will work only if
the text is still highlighted. Unclicking the selected text appears to clear
the buffer, making the middle click paste not work.

The buffer should not be cleared unless another selection has been made to
overwrite it, so one a selection is made, it should remain available for paste,
regardless of whether the selection is highlighted or not.

Mark.

* Provide an option to hide the iconic toolbar
* Provide an option to display text below icons in the toolbar

Bug#638024: [apt] APT::Default-Release considers equivalent suite

2011-09-18 Thread Mark Hobley
There is another oddity occuring. When an attempt is made to remove a package,
the sources are being evaluated and removal of the package is denied:

# apt-get remove epiphany-browser
Reading package lists... Done
E: The value 'squeeze' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is
not available in the sources

For removal of packages, the sources should not be considered and the package
should simply be removed.

Bug#641990: Clean never option does not work

2011-09-18 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: apt
Version: 0.8.16~exp6
Severity: normal

When apt has finished installing a package, it asks a question as follows:

Do you wish to delete previously downloaded .deb files?

Accidentally answering Yes will cause all .deb files to be deleted, even if
they are being shared across the network.

The following configuration option in /etc/apt/apt.conf is supposed to
suppress this question, preventing accidental deletion of the .deb files.
However, this option is ineffective, and the question still appears:

APT::DSelect::Clean "never";

The question should not be asked if Clean "never" is configured as above.

Description : A small and efficient stand alone telnet server daemon

The utelnetd package provides a small and efficient stand alone telnet
server daemon. The utelnetd package is small and compact, and uses less
resources than a traditional telnet server daemon, making it ideal for
use on embedded systems, or systems where memory is limited. The
utelnetd server daemon also offers the following additional benefits:

The daemon runs independently of the internet superserver daemon and the
inetd package is not required to use this daemon, making it useful on
systems where no inetd is installed.

The daemon runs as a single process, so only one instance is
required, saving memory and system resources. This is unlike a
traditional telnet server daemon, a telnetd process is
spawned by the internet superserver daemon for each client connection

Bug#503360: iceape-browser: composer sometimes produces a flickering menu, when rightclick is applied

2008-10-24 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: iceape-browser
Version: 1.1.12-1
Severity: normal

When using Mozilla Composer, by applying a rightclick event to a link or
selected text within a composed page, sometimes this produces a
flickering menu. This looks like the menu is popping up and down
rapidly, and the menuitem under the mouse cursor keeps changing, which
besides the menu being barely readable, it is not always possible to
determine which menuitem will be selected when the click event is
applied.

This problem is intermittent, so I do not know the exact details of when
this occurs, however it appears to be something to do with the position
of the link on the screen, by scrolling the page up or down, this
problem can sometimes be alleviated, however, if mozilla composer is
being run in a window that fills the screen (which it normally is), and
the link being edited is at the bottom of the document, it is not
possible to scroll down to alleviate this problem, and the problem
remains.

My screen runs at a resolution of 800x600 (SVGA), if that matters, for
the purpose of replicating this problem.

Bug#503863: iceape-browser: rightclick block images - no corresponding unblock

2008-10-28 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: iceape-browser
Version: 1.1.12-1
Severity: minor

When viewing a website, there is a rightclick menu option "Block Images
from This Server". However, there is no corresponding "Unblock Images
from This Server" option in the rightclick context menu.

This is because the "Block Images from This Server" option appears when
the mousepointer is positioned over an image. However, if images are
blocked, there are no images, and therefore it is not possible to
unblock them using a rightclick.

A fix would be to add "Unblock Images from This Server" into the
rightclick menu, whenever images are blocked.

Mark.

Bug#506345: linux-image-2.6-486: Facility to allow falsified information in /proc/cpuinfo

2008-11-20 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: linux-image-2.6-486
Version: 2.6.26+16
Severity: wishlist

It would be useul to have the facility to provide a generic entry in
/proc/cpuinfo rather than revealing processor specific information.

This could possibly be done via a boot option, such as

cpuinfo=486 or cpuinfo=pentium

This would enable the computer to act as a generic base level computer
for a specific architecture, providing backward compatibility with
lower level machines. This would enable a machine to appear as a generic
486 machine or as a generic Pentium machine, without revealing the machine is
actually a higher level machine 686 machine (or using an IBM compatible
processor, supplied by an alternative manufacturer such as a Cyrix 686,
or an AMD K6 or AMD K7.)

One of the problems that I am encountering is that build and runtime
systems appear to be taking information from /proc/cpuinfo, and this is
influencing compiler or program behaviour.

All of my machines are using 486 (IA-32) compatible processors. However,
not all machines are true 486 machines. I have 586, 686 and K7 series
processors on some machines, and the processors are made by various
manufacturers (such as Intel, Cyrix and AMD.)

I require all machines to behave with "lowest common denominator"
behaviour, and for all compiled binaries to be generic enough to move
across machines. I am finding that distribution provided binaries, and
third party provided build scripts are detecting that the machine doing
the build is a 686, and is utilizing features for that architecture,
even though the target architecture is generic 486.

I know that a workaround for this would be to modify all of the build
scripts in every single package, and find a way of rebuilding the entire
Debian distribution from source, but I feel that a falsified /proc/cpuinfo
would be much less of a headache.

I propose that the boot time switch cpuinfo=pentium provides the following
falsified information in /proc/cpuinfo:

vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 5
model : 2
model name : Pentium 75 - 200

Maybe the vendor_id, model and model name could be simply be set to
"Unknown" or "Generic" if the boot switch is used. I am not sure what
effect this would have, but hopefully it would mean generic behaviour.

Bug#507314: xboard: Allow moves by keying to and from coordinates from keyboard

Package: xboard
Version: 4.2.7-7.1
Severity: wishlist

This is a proposal to allow moves to be made by pressing a sequence of
keys in a similar manner to a conventional chess computer in addition to
the current pointer device support.

For example, typing E 2 E 4 would move the piece on square E2 to the
square E4. Currently the only way to make this move is by using the
pointing device.

Bug#511281: wine: Facility to copy text from dialogue boxes by dragging mouse over

2009-01-08 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: wine
Version: 1.0.1-1
Severity: normal

When a dialogue box displays a message, it is currently not possible to
select the text for copy into anither application, because dragging the
mouse over the text does has no effect.

For example, this makes it extremely awkward to copy error messages
containing long registry keys or multiple messages into an application,
such as an editor, or into a browser search box for diagnostic purposes.

Suggested fix is that dragging a mouse over text, highlights and copies
to clipboard.

Bug#505798: autoconf: generate scripts report architecture above build level

2008-11-15 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: autoconf
Version: 2.61-8
Severity: normal

If a system is installed at a build level of say i486, ie the kernel is
vmlinuz-2.6.26-1-486, the generated configure scripts may use a build
level above this, even though the system is supposed to be i486
compatible.

We have chosen a 486 build level for compatibility across all machines
i486 or higher.

When building packages using ./configure, the autoconf tool reports:

checking build system type... i686-pc-linux
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux

I believe that this is not correct and should read:

checking build system type... i486-pc-linux
checking host system type... i486-pc-linux

Using a level above our selected build level, may produce compatibility
problems if the compiled packages are moved to a 486 machine, or to
other machines compatible with, but higher than our i486 build level,
and indeed higher than our installed system level.

Bug#505855: xfe starts with window trims outside of displayable screen area

2008-11-16 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: xfe
Version: 1.04-2.1
Severity: minor

I am using the jwm window manager and my display screen is at 800 x 600
pixel resolution.

When I start the xfe filemanager, the application appears to be running
full screen, and there are no visible window trims or titlebar. This is
because the application is using the full height and width of the
display, including space that would normally be occupied by the trims.
This means that the application cannot be moved, maximized, minimized or
closed using the titlebar buttons, because it is offscreen.

Bug#505859: nfs-kernel-server: Extended account squashing using a number

2008-11-16 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: nfs-kernel-server
Severity: wishlist

This is an idea to extend account squashing using a numerical parameter.
Currently only the root account can be squashed. However, we could extend this
facility by using a numeric option added to the /etc/exports file.

For example:

/foobar 10.0.0.0/18(rw,squashbelow=14)

This would squash all accounts numbered 14 or below.

This option could still be used with the no_root_squash option:

/foobar 10.0.0.0/18(rw,squashbelow=14,no_root_squash)

Here, accounts 1 to 14 are squashed, but the root account (0) is not
squashed.

Package: rox-filer

Browsing through a list of files, point to a file, then rightclick,

the file, rather than just the filename. This makes renaming awkward,
(especially on files in deeply nested directories), requiring the user

Bug#509333: vsftpd discloses whether usernames are valid or not

2008-12-21 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: vsftpd
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

The vsftpd daemon discloses whether usernames supplied by the client are
valid or not.

On connection to the server via a client, if an invalid username is
supplied, a 530 error is immediately returned, instead of a password
prompt being returned before failure.

Here is a sample session:

By prompting for a password, the user would not know whether the
username or the password is invalid. Without the password prompt, the
user knows that the username is not valid, and can quickly perform a
dictionary attack to obtain system usernames.

This vulnerability was first discovered in September 2003, and has not
yet been patched.

Hmmm. My login program does not do that. I haven't tested pam-opie. I feel that
it is an important security issue, but Debian may have documentation that says
otherwise. I certainly would prefer not to have my account usernames
compromised, if possible.

Indeed. I have this set to NO. If I set this to yes, it will reverse the state
of my userlist, so logins will not be restricted to the the userlist.

I need userlist to be set to NO, but I need the denial to be issued after the
user is asked for a password.

So are you saying that because a bug is documented, it does not need fixing?

Maybe we could reopen this as a feature request. I definitely need a fix for
this. I want to be able to use vsftpd in a public environment without
compromising my usernames.

I think we have a design flaw here. If the user has a valid password, then he
probably has the associated username information, and thus a valid login. If on
the other hand, a hacker is guessing, which I reckon is more likely, we are
feeding him username validation. (In my case, the default behaviour is less
secure than the proposed revision.)

I think we should have a switch here to allow the administrator to decide which
behaviour is required.

This report should be reopened as a feature request.

Bug#509926: bincimap: Display subdirectories as a subfolder of parent, rather than of inbox

2008-12-27 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: bincimap
Severity: wishlist

Currently, subdirectories appear as a subfolder of Inbox to the
connected clients.

The directory structure:

..
|-- .Processed
| |-- cur
| |-- new
| `-- tmp
|-- cur
|-- new
`-- tmp

Appears on the client side as:

- foobar
 + Inbox
- Processed

(Note the subdirectory of Inbox.)

It would be nice if this could be presented to the client as follows:

- foobar
 - Inbox
 - Processed

This problem is confirmed by upstream documentation:

http://www.bincimap.org/bincimap-faq.html#q14

Mark.

Bug#524709: Switch to prompt for manual overriding of all autoconf decisions

2009-04-19 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: autoconf
Version: 2.61-8
Severity: wishlist

This is a proposal to include an additional switch in configure scripts that
can be used to override all autoconf made decisions. This would give the
system builder greater control of the build. This is particularly useful
for builders that are building on one machine for deployment on other machines,
where decisions made by autoconf are not necessarily appropriate. By including
an additional switch for manual override, we could prompt the system builder
for decisions:

Here is a traditional autoconf build:

../configure

checking build system type... i486-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type... i486-pc-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i486-pc-linux-gnu
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether ln works... yes
checking for gcc... gcc

Here is a alternative functionality that would be provided by the proposed
switch:

../configure --manual

Type new value or press enter to accept default.
checking build system type
[i486-pc-linux-gnu]:

checking host system type
[i486-pc-linux-gnu]:

checking target system type
[i486-pc-linux-gnu]: foo32-bar-rhubarb-bsd

checking for a BSD-compatible install...
[/usr/bin/install -c]: /usr/local/bin/fooinstall -foo

checking whether ln works...

checking for gcc...

Bug#524709: Switch to prompt for manual overriding of all autoconf decisions

2009-04-20 Thread Mark Hobley

> From: Ralf Wildenhues

> Please consider
> - using the right configure switches to enable
> cross-compilation if that is an issue for you,

> Both issues are extensively discussed in the Autoconf
> manual.

I am aware of this. Unfortunately, some decisions are still made automatically,
and need overriding. The number of build options available
is less than the number of decisions being made.

This is a major problem when buildstrapping and scratch building, where you
need to know that a package will build on a target machine that does not yet
exist, and the target machine has some configuration differences to the current
build machine (In my case, the same architecture, but a modified operating
system, for example, a different shell, a different awk tool, a
different Native Language Support handler, etc, etc.). The autoconf tool may
decide to use particular shell tools, or facilities to package build
that will not exist on the target. This means that I have no way of knowing
whether a package will rebuild on the target, because it did not build
using the same facilities on the test host. This means that if I have to modify
a package source, and it becomes broken on the target, I have no way of knowing
whether the breakage is as a result of my modification, or whether the breakage
was already there, and the package would not have built anyway, even before my
modifications were made.

If I had full control of the autoconf process, this would be a lot easier.
At the moment, I am having to try and reverse engineer squillions and
squillions of pages of autoconf generated junk, to try and track down build
decisions, in the hope of creating an override. And to compound the problem,
the junk is not in a central location, but within each package. So I make a
modification on one set of build scripts for one package, and I have to start
all over again to make the same modification on another set of build scripts.
(I wish we had scripts in a central shared location, so modifying one script,
is global.)

It would be nice to have full control, of the build process without having to
try and reverse engineer squillions of pages of generated junk (of which only
some is actually relevant to my platform).

Mark.

Bug#528255: iceape-composer: right click context menu shrinks to scrollable

2009-05-11 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: iceape-browser
Version: 1.1.14-1
Severity: minor

I am using iceape-composer, and I am editing tables. When I right click a cell
within the table, I notice that the menu that appears sometimes has its bottom
options missing and a downward scroll arrow appears at the bottom of the menu.
This occurs, even though there is sufficient space to display the missing
options, making the downward scroll unnecessary. Note that this does not occur
all the time, and behaviour depends on the position of the cell on the screen.
The problem was observed when editing a table cell in the middle of the screen.

Note that "flickering menus" (#503360) may also occur when performing a similar
edit.

My screen is 800 x 600 (SVGA), and the problem has been observed on both the
the icewm and jwm window mananger.

for tab characters, rather than just a series of spaces. This would be useful
for showing embedded tab characters in documents such as program listings or
control messages where embedded tab characters are required.

Bug#532071: The "open window" statement fails

2009-06-06 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: yabasic
Version: 2.763-4
Severity: important

The "open window" statement fails. This bug report reopens #496962, which is
probably archived. The open window statement causes the yabasic interpreter
to crash. This problem still occurs on 32 bit IBM compatible computers using
i486 compatible processors. The bug is still exhibited in stable, testing, and
unstable.

Mark.

Bug#534932: Continuous alternatation between two screens

2009-06-28 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: postfix
Version: 2.6.2~rc1-1
Severity: grave

On installation of postfix, a screen appears

Postfix Configuration
Please select the mail server configuration type that best meets your needs.
This screen has an OK button.

On activation of the OK button, a menu appears:

Postfix Configuration
General type of mail configuration:

No matter which option is selected, the previous screen reappears, and on
activating the OK, button, the menu appears again. This is recursive.
(Sometimes, there is a rapid continuous alternation between the two screens
without the need to activate the OK button).

Pressing Ctrl-C can sometimes return to a shell, however the package is
not installed if this is done, so the package is unusable.

Bug#534963: iptables leaking traffic when long chains are defined

2009-06-28 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: iptables
Version: 1.4.2-6
Severity: normal

There appears to be traffic leaking across iptables when a long chain of
valid ip addresses are used.

I am getting connections being established from outside of the valid address
list. For example:

netstat -a --numeric-users

Bug#542142: Facility to globally disable java for all users

2009-08-17 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: iceweasel
Severity: wishlist

Individual users can disable Java using the following method:

Menu, Edit, Preferences, Content, Enable Java: Unticked

This is a request for a facility to be provided that allows the system
administrator to disable Java by default for all users and to enable the system
administrator to cause the Java related preferences to be greyed out for
all users, so that they cannot override the system administrator's settings.

Mark.

(provided by didiwiki), so presumably the host at 118.168.141.172 made a
connection, even though it is not in the address whitelist, as far as I can
tell.

For details of configuration scripts and test data, refer to bug #534963

This is not nearly complete. Please show the _complete_ config.

That is the complete configuration, as far as I can tell. What element of the
configuration do you believe is missing?

> please use a sniffer and record the packets going through.

The service port is being used frequently by computers on the internal
LAN. I have tcpdump that I could use here, but I only want to log only packets
coming in externally (ie not coming from 10.0.0.*) for the purpose of this
report. Do you know of a way of achieving that or is there another sniffer that
you suggest that I use?

Thanks in advance.

Mark.

Bug#540074: netfilter leaking traffic when long chains defined

2009-08-18 Thread Mark Hobley
Right, I am trying to capture some traffic using:

tcpdump -f -xx '( port 8000 ) and (( ! src net 10.0.0.0/8 ) or ( ! dst net
10.0.0.8 ))'

This will capture traffic from the live system, which is using service port
8000, rather than test port , which is from test. (On the live system the
service port number is 8000, rather than , and the script has been modified
to reflect this).

netstat -a reveals:

tcp0 0 neptune.markhobley:8000 118-168-141-172.dy:3388 ESTABLISHED

I am not getting any output against host 118.168.141.172 after an interval of
10 minutes. I was expecting to see some kind of "keep alive" here, or the
connection to timeout (via the idle timer) and close. I am not seeing this via
tcpdump. Does that occur at a lower level than tcpdump?

I am getting malicious traffic showing from other hosts, but unfortunately
tcpdump logs the traffic before the filter, so this has to be ignored.

It would be useful here, if I could log only traffic that passes the filter.
Can I do this?

Currently to determine traffic passing the filter, I have to look for an
incoming packet that causes a response from the application. These are
infrequent, but I expect to find one over a period of several days.

I will try and rig this up for permanent monitoring, and post a follow up over
the next few days.

Mark.

Bug#540074: netfilter leaking traffic when long chains defined

2009-08-05 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: linux-image-2.6-486
Version: 2.6.26+17+lenny1
Severity: normal
File: linux

There appears to be traffic leaking across the netfilter when a long chain of
valid ip addresses are used.

I am getting connections being established from outside of the valid address
list. For example:

netstat -a --numeric-users
tcp 0 0 10.0.0.8: 118.168.141.172:3388 ESTABLISHED

This problem incorrectly reported on #534963 against iptables. This
reopens against kernel, as advised by Laurence Lane.

For details of configuration scripts and test data, refer to bug #534963.

Bug#546027: lockpref does not work against proxy server settings

2009-09-14 Thread Mark Hobley
--- On Thu, 10/9/09, Mike Hommey wrote:

> Does it work if you set user_pref in the prefs.js file in your profile
directory ?

Hi Mike.

Right ... It appears that the entries are very specific. Some parameters
require quotation marks, others do not, and you have to make the entries in a
specific sequence, and in their entirety in order to lock the proxy server
setting.

Here is what I did:

I set the proxy server settings manually using:

Menu: Edit, Preferences, Advanced, Tab: Network, Button: Settings

When I exit Mozilla, the settings are saved as user_pref in
.mozilla/firefox/indeterminatefilename.default/prefs.js

I now:

grep "proxy" .mozilla/firefox/indeterminatefilename.default/prefs.js

I paste the output into /etc/iceweasel/pref/iceweasel.js and change
user_pref to lockPref

And hey ... the proxy server settings are now locked for all users :)

Bug#546445: revised m4sh.m4 may be ineffective

2009-09-13 Thread Mark Hobley
Examining the /usr/share/autoconf/m4sugar directory, it appears that there is a
frozen m4sh.m4f file.

Looking at the autoconf package, I guess that these are generated by the
autoconf-2.63/lib/m4sugar/Makefile, because they are mentioned in the
Makefile.am file as follows:

 nodist_m4sugarlib_DATA = version.m4 m4sugar.m4f m4sh.m4f

 ## -- ##
 ## The frozen files. ##
 ## -- ##

 m4sugar.m4f: $(m4sugar_m4f_dependencies)
 m4sh.m4f: $(m4sh_m4f_dependencies)
 include ../freeze.mk

Deleting /usr/share/autoconf/m4sugar/m4sh.m4f causes the updated m4sh.m4 to
take effect.

It would be better for frozen files to be placed in /var/cache/autoconf and
then make used to rebuild them in the event that the m4 sources in
/usr/share/autoconf become newer.

When this page is examined under a Print Preview, only one page is

Bug#478952: /usr/bin/iceape: Options to add or remove toolbar buttons should be available from menu

2008-05-01 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: iceape-browser
Version: 1.1.9-1
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/bin/iceape

The main menu should provide the option to add or remove buttons from
the toolbars.

It would be nice to be able to remove the "Search" and "Print" buttons
from the "Navigation Toolbar".

The "Home" button should really be on the "Navigation Toolbar", but is
currently on the "Personal Toolbar". This means that some people may
feel it is necessary to display the "Personal Toolbar" purely for the
purpose of getting a "Home" Button. It would be nice if the facility to
move the "Home" button to the Navigation Toolbar was available via the
main menu. Currently, a plugin is required to place the "Home" button
onto the "Navigation Toolbar".

Bug#475895: tar: Error "this volume is out of sequence" on restore from LS120 diskettes

2008-04-13 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: tar
Version: 1.19-3
Severity: normal

Backing up to an LS120 (Laser Servo) diskette drive:

cd ~/backupthislot
tar cMF /dev/hdd ./

This will perform the backup and periodically ask the user to change
diskette, until the backup completes.

Restoring from the backup:

cd ~/restoredirectory
tar xMf /dev/hdd ./

The first diskette restores normally. A prompt appears to insert the
next disk in sequence.

When the next disk is inserted, an error occurs: "This volume is out of
sequence".

The error is consistent, and there is no way to restore the contents of
the backup from beyond the first diskette.

Bug#485090: abiword: The facility to resize table cells has no keyboard shortcut

2008-06-08 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: abiword
Version: 2.4.6-5+b3
Severity: minor

The facility to resize table cells has no keyboard shortcuts, requiring
the user to use the mouse. This causes a problem for accessibility users with
limited dexterity who are unable to use a mouse.

See the article "Missing Keyboard Functionality" on the Accessibilty
Users' Wiki:

http://markhobley.yi.org:9088/nokeys

A possible improvement could be to provide a dialogue, which allows the
user to adjust the desired cell size using arrow keys, or by entering a
value for the new cell size.

Regards,

Mark.

Bug#494579: iceape-browser: Iceape Composer does not provide facility to switch to a nostyle view

2008-08-10 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: iceape-browser
Version: 1.1.11-1
Severity: normal

In the browser, it is possible to switch view styles using:

Menu: View, Use Style

The composer component does not offer the equivalent view option,
causing pages in the composer to have a different appearance than in the
browser.

The following options should be available from within Iceape Composer:

Menu: View, Use Style, None
Menu: View, Use Style, Default Style

Bug#495374: grepcidr: Provision of -o option to output only matched parts of a line

2008-08-16 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: grepcidr
Version: 1.3-4
Severity: wishlist

It would be useful to be able to use this tool for matching of IP
addresses within an arbitary text field. This would require the use of
a -o option to output only matched parts of a line.

An example application of this is demonstrated as follows:

echo 'qwer(023)&roir123.28.49.59(t95)@torprp' |
grepcidr -o 0.0.0.0-255.255.255.255
123.28.49.59

It may also be useful to be able to use 0.0.0.0/0 to represent any IP
address (or better still do this by default, and allow omission of the
IP address related arguments:

echo 'qwer(023)&roir123.28.49.59(t95)@torprp' |
grepcidr -o
123.28.49.59

Bug#499348: /usr/bin/iceape: browser searches for a URL instead of jumping to it

2008-09-17 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: iceape-browser
Version: 1.1.11-1
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/iceape

The browser exhibits really annoying behaviour of searching for a URL
(in google), rather than jumping to the URL.

If a URL is typed in the address bar, the browser should always jump to
the address.

For example, lets visit:

http://history.perl.org/PerlTimeline.html

Ok, we scroll down the page to:

Perl 1.000 is unleashed upon the world.

Rightclick the link for Perl 1.000 and "open link in new window"

The file "perl-1.0.tar.gz" is of type application/x-tar and Iceape does
not know how to handle this file type.

Button: Cancel

The address bar now contains:

http://history.perl.org/src/perl-1.0.tar.gz

Hightlight and cut "perl-1.0.tar.gz", so that address bar now contains:

http://history.perl.org/src/

Press Enter to visit the URL.

The browser jumps to:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=http%3A%2F%2Fhistory.perl.org%2Fsrc%2F&b%2F&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

It should have gone to:

http://history.perl.org/src/

Repeat this three times. Each time the browser jumps to:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=http%3A%2F%2Fhistory.perl.org%2Fsrc%2F&b%2F&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

instead of to the address in the address bar.

Now close down the browser, and go to a blank page.

Now type the following in the address bar:

http://history.perl.org/src/

Press enter, the browser goes to the address typed. This shows that the
problem is with the browser and not the website:

If URL addresses are pasted into the address bar, the browser submits
the pasted URL to Google, instead of jumping to the address.

Bug#497304: general: packages cannot be partially installed

2008-08-31 Thread Mark Hobley
Package: general
Severity: wishlist

There is an annoying flaw in the design of the Debian package management
system, which means that packages cannot be partially installed. This
limits the flexibility of Debian based systems when it comes to mixed
installations or installation on embedded or resource constrained
systems.

For any particular package, the full set of binary components, optional
documentation, and unused foreign language support files will be installed
by the package management system.

This flaw also means that components of bundled packages, such as the
coreutils suite cannot be individually selected or omitted. This is
particularly annoying if the system installer wants to replace one of
the components with a customized version.

A fix would be to make it possible to select individual files for
installation from within a package.

Other work includes splitting packages into daughter packages, the
parent package being dependent on all daughters, but allowing the option
of just selecting individual daughter packages,

eg: coreutils depends on coreutils-fileutils and
coreutils-fileutils depends on coreutils-fileutils-head,
coreutils-fileutils-split

etc, etc.

Possibly introduce a packaging policy (this is a draft):

Each stand alone binary file should be individually packaged, rather
than bundled with other stand alone binary files.

It is policy that internationalized (non-english) components are
packaged separately to the core package. For example, a package foobar,
would have its french documentation in a separate foobar-fr package.

Packages should not install cruft on the system. This means that a
package should not install a foreign language file, unless the system
has been explicitly configured to support that foreign language.

Mark.
