Bug#265762: ITP: tpop3d -- tpop3d is a fast, extensible, secure UNIX POP3 server
My two cents -- and to answer Andi's question... I don't know of any other pop server that supports the constellation of features in tpop3d. In addition to an extreamly flexible authentication backend, it provides extra data to the system that no other popper does: the hostname of the IP address of the accepted socket. This allows for IP-based virtual host of email. Other notable features are: post-authtication actions -- built-in support for mysql-based POP-before-SMTP; indexes of mbox-style mailboxes so that mbox-style mailboxes don't have to be so very very slow; and TLS/SSL connections. I wish I could find an IMAP server that did as much. I'm using dovecot and it's missing the IP-based virtual host support; the post-authentication action support; and some of the authentication flexibility. Despite my reluctance to avoid things that aren't pre-packaged for Debian, I went and compiled tpop3d for source to run on my Debian box. As for his other question about what to drop... Half of the pop servers in Debian are part of a suite (courier-pop, dovecot-pop3d, libroxen-pop3, xmail) and should be kept if the suite is kept. Of the others, the only one I've used is qpopper and it could be dropped in favor of tpop3d. The default config for tpop3d should be with password authentication and mbox format mailboxes. That would make it a drop-in replacement. One of my employees tried teapop and said that it sucked and apt-get remove'ed it. I don't know why. -Dave -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#57280: Using user groups or a "users" group is a setting in adduser not passwd
Marc and adduser maintainers, In 57280, the bug submitter requests that: "When the administrator is asked to create a normal user account, base-config should first ask if the admin wishes to use the default `user groups' or the more traditional `users' group and explain each setup a little, assuming debconf is set for a priority of normal or higher. I use the `users' group myself, and I'm not fond of manually fixing my `admin' user back from the `user groups' configuration after my base system is installed. Having base-config actually ask would be a better and more complete solution." The bug was initially sent to base-config as it was raised during an initial install. Then it was reassigned to passwd as base-config just calls "dpkg-reconfigure passwd". However, passwd.config code indeed creates the user with adduser if it is here...and useradd if it is not. In the former case, it then uses adduser defaults (user groups) and in the latter it uses useradd defaults (group 100 as primary group). The only way I see to give users some control about this would be adding a debconf dialog to adduser so that it prompts for setting up user groups(at low level probably) when installed. So, this would turn this bug into a wishlist bug against adduser... Do you have thoughts about this? -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? That would be fine with me. In fact, it would be a better solution for me, since right now I have to use an ugly wrapper script to be able to run pbuilder from my normal user account that does: sudo sh -c "export PATH=/usr/lib/ccache:$PATH; /usr/bin/pdebuild ..." Bug#314808: /usr/share/PACKAGE/www
I think /usr/share/PACKAGE/www is rather long and clumsy. May I suggest a /web directory. http://lists.debian.org/debian-webapps/2005/06/msg00029.html The Web application can then store files based on /web/HTTP_HOST. /usr/share/PACKAGE/www doesn't account for the possibility that more than one website will use the package. The data will tend to be site specific and hence using the environment variable HTTP_HOST is sensible. For example: /web/example.com http://example.com/ It encourages a strong link to the URL. Things like http://example.com/blog with a link to /usr/share/wordpress can't really be done because you would need to account for the REQUEST_URI. I feel comfortable enough to suggest that each web application should have it's own HTTP_HOST aka domain. So each Web app will require use of subdomains off one domain host. This allows Web applications the full freedom to use REQUEST_URI of which many are designed to do already. This keeps URLs consistent and makes URL editing easier. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#266899: Detect BPF properly (for kfreebsd-gnu)

Bug#293846: Updated patch for bug #293846
Hi, As promised, please find attached an updated patch for this bug. Changes from the previous one are the following: - Also fix the BPF detection in configure, so that autoconf does not have to be rebuilt. - Build-Conflicts with libpcap0.7-dev. As this package provides /usr/include/net/bpf.h, the detection is false on a Linux system with libpcap0.7-dev. Bye, Aurelien -- .''`. The differece between a plain debootstrap and a vserver debootstrap is that some parts (like postinst scripts) is called inside a vserver context in the later one. In a plain debootstrap everything is called within the same context with just a simple chroot. If you have a menu.xml in /etc/... then it uses that and takes menudefs.hook from the same directory. If you have a menu.xml in .config/... then it uses that and takes menudefs.hook from that directory. Therefore if you don't copy menu.xml then running update-menus as a user has absolutely no effect as it updates the local menudefs.hook but there is no menu.xml that uses it there. If you want to make changes to the menu.xml before it gets processed then you should use the system.menu.xml Simon -- ... Bug#315035: smbldap-tools: support ldapi:/// ?
Package: smbldap-tools Version: 0.8.7-4 Severity: wishlist I tried to run samba under vserver where the localhost(127.0.0.1) is being mapped to the assigned ip address. slapd has no problem about it(even if I tell it to listen to 127.0.0.1, it actually is listening to the real ip). However, many ldap tools failed to see this including smbldap-tools. for those which support ldapi, I can change them as well. But smbldap-tools doesn't support ldapi based on what I read in the code. The Net::LDAPI is already part of standard Perl 5 ldap library but smbldap-tools don't use it at them moment. No, I don't state that UMASK is there to gatch all entries of user to system. It just helps to catch a little bit more logins thath just with /etc/profile. P.S. Let's call set of entries caught with UMASK L, and set of entries caught with /etc/profile S. * L and S intersect. * S is generally larger than L. * but L - S == N, where N is set of entries to system through login(1) using non-shell in place of login shell or using a shell which does not set umask by itself. Bug#295760: Uploading ming to Debian
Hi Klaus, I've noticed that you published some unofficial debian packages of ming. Ming is needed to package ktoon, see: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=295760 Are you interested in maintaining the ming package? I'm not yet a Debian Developer, but I can find somebody to sponsor the upload of your packages to the official Debian repository. Another question: is the source package (.dsc, .diff.gz, .orig.tar.gz) of your binary packages available somewhere? However, following the FHS you should place "served" data under /srv, so placing your www/ or web/ dir under /srv makes a lot more sense standard-wise than inventing a new top level dir. No, /usr/share/package/www is a single, fixed path per package containing the files shipped in the package. You're talking about something completely different which is *not* a replacement for /usr/share/package/www, because you *still* have to have some fixed location into which to unpack the files contained in the package. -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#221692: crack-attack sounds and music
Crack Attack 1.1.14-1 was uploaded yesterday, so according to the information on this bug the patch is in Debian. That just leaves the data. Someone mentioned Breakout as a source, obviously it could be copyrighted then. Bug#307730: (worth noting)
The bug the person above mentions is very different... That's when the previous version contained a directory, and the new version doesn't. dpkg obviously tries to remove it ... but this is a symlink on the user's machine and dpkg removes the symlink (because it handles symlink-to-directories as directories) when the user didn't want it to. The one known circumstance where there is a bug (noted above) is if the directory is removed from the package. If foo 1.0 ships "/foo" and foo 2.0 doesn't, dpkg will remove the /foo directory OR symlink. However if both foo 1.0 and 2.0 contain the directory in the package list, then if the admin has changed it to a symlink, the symlink should be preserved. If dpkg is removing the symlink and replacing it with a directory, there is another bug that is not a duplicate of #182747 -- however so far it hasn't shown up in any other package. If #182747 is actually what's going on here (mysql no longer includes /var/lib/mysql and dpkg so the admin's symlink) then by all means reassign and merge the two bugs. If not, we'll need to look a little closer at what's going on -- and try without your maintainer script cruft which I think is really causing the problem. Scott -- Have you ever, ever felt like this? All the data are handled through a MySQL database, which provides a convenient frontend to OpenSSL, and options such as seeking a certificate with a search engine. . The actual version is able to handle multiple Certificate Authorities in one server, to publish a certificate request from a Certificate Signing Request, to certify a request, to revoke a certificate and to manage one or more Certificate Revocation Lists. It also able to search for the waiting requests or certificates, to respond to OCSP requests and to seek in and publish to LDAP Directory. . This package provides the core shared library. . Bug#315021: gcc-3.3: ICE compiling Linux 2.6.12 x86 using kernel-package
Moving the .config over to another computer and compiling it didn't elicit the same bug behaviour, so there is more evidence to suggest a hardware failure.
