Comments/Problems:

Bug: kde-i18n-fi not installed.

KDE is installed because I chose the Desktop task. However, it does
not install kde-i18n-fi, although I chose country and language as
Finland and finnish. The only language available in KDE is
english. Gnome works in finnish.

Bug: X Window keyboard is USA.

Finnish keyboard works in console, but X Window uses USA keyboard. X
Window configuration went OK, except it did not ask what keyboard I
want. I used the default level for questions.

These lines are in /etc/X11/XF86config-4:

Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"

For finnish keyboards, there should be pc105 and fi.

Other finnish users have wanted fi_FI.utf8 as default finnish
locale. I use that too, but change the locale with dpkg-reconfigure
locales.

Some typos and bad wording in finnish texts, but I'm one of the
finnish translators so those I have to fix myself.

There was one user who specifically says the finnish translation is
good.

PS Bug: The gdm login screen was in finnish and even after a reboot I'm
almost sure it was in finnish. Now it is in english even if I changes
in from Language drop down menu to finnish.

Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/.

They are included in the kernel image installation package. On an
installed system, in file /boot/config..

Words being combined happens when lines are being formed somewhere in
the bowels of the gettext. Make sure there is a space after système to
work around this bug. And a space before each newline in msgstr,
except in the last line.

Finland should also have "XkbModel" "pc105".

I guess someone else fixed this. Check the history logs in svn to see
if this error was fixed resently, between making that installation

Are the instructions in
  http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/apb.html
enough?

You should probably read the documentation from
  http://www.dk.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
so you can get the install going.

You need to burn it to CD as image. Your CD-burning program may
recognise the .iso ending and do the right thing, or you need to
choose the correct way to burn it. If you list the files in the CD and
it shows sarge-i386-netinst.iso then you copied the file to the CD and
that will not boot.

Strange merge conflicts in d-i/tools/cdrom-detect/debian/po/fi.po

2004-01-14 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
How come d-i/tools/cdrom-detect/debian/po/fi.po is so messed up? I
can't make heads or tails of the file due to the numerous strange
merge conflicts. It looks like two guite different files have been
merged together. KBabel does not want to touch the file, the merge
conflict markings confuse it. I tried to fix them but kbabel refuses
to save the file while it still has errors.

Even the header has two different POT-Creation-Dates, like there
really is two teams writing this file.

I decided to toss the fi.po and copy templates.pot. I'll copy the
translated strings there manually.

Still would like to know what caused the merge conflicts.

I have told newbie installers to create as the first partition a small
50 MB for /boot, then swap 200% RAM and the rest root. The /boot is
there to avoid problems with 1024 cylider limit for placing the kernel
image on PC machines.

This works, and uses only three partitions, so IDE disk users can
still create a fourth for some other operating system or for /home.

I updated the motherboard BIOS, now the CD boots. Strange, Woody CD

This Sarge CD is somehow different from the other boot CDs. Anyway,
the new BIOS fixed my problem, so I guess the Debian Installer is not
at fault.

Comments/Problems:

Disk partitioner was a bit confusing, had to do it a few times
before I figured it out. I wanted to create my own partition
setup. The default with all in one partition works OK.

In "Debianin peruskokoonpanon asetukset" text is wider than 80
characters so lines are cut at beginning and end. This is the screen
where user chooses between tasksel, aptitude, dselect for installing
more packages. I can provide screenshot if needed.

In first virtual console I got error:

Info: Switching console charset mapping to ISO-8859-15
set_kernel_font: Virheellinen argumentti
The console is inactive, but virtual console 2 and other work.

Don't know yet why this is, I run Finnish locale.

X Window did not start, I chose /dev/gpmdata as mouse device, but
gpm was not installed. I installed it by hand and did gpmconfig, then
restarting X worked.

After shutdown and reboot I noticed name service is no longer
working. The file /etc/resolv.conf is empty. I remember reading bugs
related to this so maybe it is being repaired.

Also mouse did not work after shutdown reboot, gpm is not running. If
I start it with /etc/init.d/gp

Why is kbabel crashing on D-I 2nd stage files?

2004-06-06 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
Looks like the files in d-i 2nd stage crash kbabel. I have edited them
using emacs PO-mode or gtranslator, since kbabel

kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /usr/share/icons/hicolor/ group

The above example is from
kbabel pcmcia-cs_debian_po.po
where the file is OK by msgfmt and emacs and gtranslator open it.

$ kbabel --version

Now emacs can handle UTF-8 without problems so perhaps I start using
only that.

Need permission to cvs apt

2004-07-03 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
I'm going to translate to finnish the remaining packages for Debian
Installer. Seems I do not have the necessary permissions for apt:

$ cvs -z3 -d:ext:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/deity co apt
Enter passphrase for key '/home/tale/.ssh/id_rsa':
cvs server: Updating apt
cvs server: failed to create lock directory for `/cvs/deity/apt'
(/cvs/deity/apt/#cvs.lock): Permission denied
cvs server: failed to obtain dir lock in repository `/cvs/deity/apt'
cvs [server aborted]: read lock failed - giving up
(wd now: ~/Work/Debian/3rd-Stage)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/Work/Debian/3rd-Stage

I'll try translating dpkg also, but perhaps I need permissions for
that also?

Or is it better to just send wishlist bugs with localisation tag?

Install Potato on the machine, then upgrade it to Woody. Upgrading
Debian is easy, read info from Woody Release Notes.

Bug#239078: install: Beta3, BIOS does not boot CD

2004-03-20 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
Package: install
Version: N/A; reported 2004-03-20
Severity: normal

Downloaded Debian Installer Beta 3 from
http://www.dk.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/, the 100MB image for
i386. Checked the md5sum, it matches.

I have downloaded the .iso twice and written it to two blank CD, one R
and the other RW, both fail to boot on this one machine. I booted and
run Knoppix 3.2 succesfully. I dowloaded Knoppix 3.3 and wrote it on
the same cd-writer I used for the installer cd, this also boots and
works.

So, this computer can boot all other bootable cd I had, and I can
write OK cds on my CD-burner. Thus I conclude that
sarge-i386-netinst.iso somehow is defective, this BIOS can not boot
it. I get "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

Info on the host where the CD won't boot:

Motherboard: ASUS A7V
ASUS A7V ACPI BIOS revision 1004C

I used a camera. It is more work, because I edited the image files to
crop them and reduce the number of colors, this way the files were
quite small. See http://www.taleman.fi/ESKK/x128.html

I learned that the camera should be on a tripod or you gotta learn how
the autofocus works on your camera.

I quess you can use a serial console, if you have another computer
where you can get screenshots of the terminal window. WMWare or some
other meta-os works also, I believe this is the way most istallation
images in books are taken.

How to create partial mirror of debian for testing d-i?

2004-05-27 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
Hello,

how do I create a partial mirror of Debian for testing
debian-installer? I use debmirror to create an install server on my
local LAN, and it works for installing packages, but debian-installer
needs in addition
  dists/sarge/main/debian-installer
  dists/sarge/main/installer-i386
which I copied there by hand. Then d-i needed ddetect in pool, at
which point I gave up, since it looked like this may go on forever
if I need to copy packages one by one.

This is the debmirror command:

debmirror /opt/Varasto1/mirror/debian --nosource --passive \
  --host=ftp.fi.debian.org --dist=sarge --arch=i386 \
  --section=main,contrib,non-free --progress

I have a fast file server on my LAN but only a DSL to Internet, so
test installs would go faster if I could use my own mirror.

Perhaps when the machine was installed? How old are those files? Maybe
they have been there all the time?

Why not delete the files you do not want on your machine? If you do
not like /icon/debian/banner_h.html you can remove them.

You did not say if a computer running Debian GNU/Linux was involved in
the incident you report. Otherwise I do not thing the Debian project
is in any way responsible for anything you mention.

Re: Dell PowerEdge 2450 boot

2001-07-12 Thread Tapio Lehtonen

On Thu, Jul 12, 2001 at 11:34:42AM -0400, D. Andrew Pease wrote:

I think this should be in Debian user, since the question is not about
developing Debian boot system.

Anyway, the only the PERC/SC is supported in Linux kernel. The other
Adaptec SCSI RAID controllers that Dell has in its latest machines are
not supported in Linux kernel, Adaptec only provides a binary only
driver that works with a specific version of Red Hat kernel.

If you already bought the stack of Dell servers, bad luck. Otherwise
explain to your sales representative that you need a SCSI controller
that is supported by the Linux kernel (add that you mean Linux kernel,
not Red Hat kernel). I had this problem every time I needed to
purchase a Dell server, seems they use a different Adaptec chip in
almost all new server models.

As for compiling the kernel, for servers especially it is well worth
the effort the compile your own kernel, so you can get the most of
your servers. Just include those things that you need and leave out
all the rest. Use the Debian package kernel-package to do the
compilation, you get a .deb file that you can easily install to all
the similar servers.

Disclaimer: This was the situation six months ago. I have not checked
after that which Adaptec chips are supported by the kernel.

I believe this error is fixed in the latest woody boot floppies.

I had problems after first install with graphical installer, the sources.list

botched
anything, and now all is just fine.

Bug#410512: Further information, new USB-stick works

2007-02-12 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
I continued trying the installation from USB-memory, this time with
another memory stick, this time 512 MB. The longer method with
syslinux and copying files on stick by hand produced on booting the
message:

No operating system found

When I did install-mbr, I got

Boot failure

Next I tried zcatting the boot.img.gz, I worked with the same set of
files as on saturday. This worked, boot went OK and I installed
successfully.

Is it somehow possible to know before trying all methods and different
USB memories what way of creating the USB boot media works? Or a
simpler and faster way than trying installation to check if the
created USB memory is OK?

I used the USB memory I tried first, the 256 MB size, two and a half
years ago to install this same host. Then the only way I got it to
boot was with GRUB.

Bug#410354: Suomi vs. Suomeksi

2007-02-15 Thread Tapio Lehtonen

I did not see an e-mail about this, but was contacted in IRC and read
the bug report. I translated "Suomeksi", because at one time it was
asked to use "in Finnish" as the original text, so I changed "Suomi"
to "Suomeksi". Timo Jyrinki is correct in pointing out that this is
factually wrong and inconsistent with the other languages.

It is OK to change this to "Suomi", and I won't raise a fuss, but
"Suomeksi" is good in showing that it is language, not country. With
capital first letter, "Suomi" can be country or language. I like
"Suomeksi", because choosing that shows the installer "in Finnish", so
it is a good translation.

Bug#410354: Change 'Suomeksi' to 'suomi'

2007-02-19 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
After discussions on irc, e-mail and BTS, I have come to the
conclusion that "suomi" is the best translation.

Rationale: this is the official way the name of the finnish language
is written in finnish. The translation "Suomeksi" works in this
particular Debian context, but to be consistent with the Debian web
pages "suomi" is better. Additionally, since I was told Debian
localechooser is used as upstream for some other uses of language
names, it is best to use the official language name.

Could this bug be reopend to get this change applied?

I don't see any package named i2c-source.

If you want to install the source code of a package, add to
/etc/apt/sources.list a line for sources, deb-src.

Still X Window has pc104 and us layout. Same for Gnome.

I booted from floppies, chose finnish keyboard. Looked like choosing
country did not work, seemed it does not open a submenu. Finnish text
was strange, I think it is missing all ä-characters, that is a with
umlaut. Also most of the text was in english, but they should be
translated to finnish. After CD was used finnish got better.

If the floppies do not have room for proper translation, it is better to
make them english only. Now finnish was lousy when so many characters
were replaced with a space.

Much changes since RC1. This seems to get better each release.

Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/.

The Debian Installer Main Menu after loading cd-drivers -floppy. It is
in english, except after Choose Country or Region is a line of broken
finnish. Menu lines 6 11 are also in finnish, but they are correctly
written because they contain no a with umlaut characters.

I tried with choosing swedish as language at the beginning. In this
case the choosing country or region works, it asks me if I'm FI or
SV. But the problem with a with umlaut characters replaced with spaces
persists. When I get to Debian installer main menu screen, it has some
lines in swedish. The a with umlauts are wiped out, but there are o
with umlaut and a with ring. Strange, this is not a font or display
only in ASCII problem, it is just the a with umlaut that will not
display.

I installed another machine yesterday also, booting from usb-memory
(with grub, luckily found instructions on
[EMAIL PROTECTED]). There finnish worked correctly and all texts
displayd as they should. The problem with choosing country being a
no-op was there.

Attached are fi and sv for needed-characters. I think I understood the
README and only included the characters not already in ASCII. Finnish
uses also the a with ring, but not in any text currently in installer,
so I put it only in sv. The euro sign is in both languages, but not
used in installer.

Hope this helps.

Installation manual tells to use syslinux to boot from
USB-memory. This needs to be remedied, BTS has #198197, #259547,
#273453 stating syslinux stopped working in version 2.04 one year and
104 days ago. Change the manual to use GRUB.

I spent one day fighting with USB booting using syslinux. GRUB worked
first try when I happened to read Andres Salomon's e-mail in
[EMAIL PROTECTED] containing instructions on how to use GRUB on
USB memory. By then I had discovered Booksize PC must have in BIOS
booting first from USB-HDD, USB-keyboard enabled. I also need to
unplug USB-mouse when booting from USB.

I chose desktop task. At the end of installation after I saw screen
stating log in now using the created accounts, the system
froze. Keyboard did not react, host did not answer to ping. I waited
five minutes, nothing happened and screen looked like it just shows
uniform color. I had to boot using power switch. After this forced
boot I logged in using GDM, but Gnome did not start,
gnome-control-center was not installed. I installed it manually, now
Gnome sort of starts, I see the screen background but no taskbars, no
icons and nothing. Can't do anything in that session.

I noticed KDE session is not available in gdm login screen.

I ran tasksel and there desktop environment was not chosen but mail
server was. Perhaps I forgot to choose desktop environment after all,
but the installer did put about 1.3G of files on the harddisk and
there are parts of Gnome and KDE at least. Now it is installing
gnome-panel, gnome-terminal etc, no wonder Gnome did not work.

Why netboot CD needs to wget debian-installer?

2004-10-03 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
I think installer wants files from remote mirror that are already in
CD-drive.

I booted from pre-RC2 floppies, boot, root, and cd-drivers. Then
installer found SCSI CD-drive and pre-RC2 netboot cd image there.

Then I told it to use my own partial mirror, created with command

debmirror /opt/mirror/debian --nosource --passive \
  --host=ftp.fi.debian.org --dist=sarge --arch=i386 \
  --section=main,contrib,non-free --progress

and served with HTTP server.

But installer fails to use it, claiming file not found. From
/var/log/apache2/access.log I find

172.22.28.244 - - [03/Oct/2004:13:10:00 +0300] "GET /debian//dists/sarge/Release
HTTP/1.1" 200 22828 "-" "Wget"

/debian//dists/testing/main/debian-installer/binary-i386/Packages HTTP/1.1" 404 419
"-" "Wget"

And /var/log/apache2/error.log states

[Sun Oct 03 13:10:03 2004] [error] [client 172.22.28.244] File does not exist:
/var/www/debian/dists/testing/main/debian-installer
[Sun Oct 03 13:10:03 2004] [error] [client 172.22.28.244] File does not exist:
/var/www/debian/dists/testing/main/debian-installer

Surely the debian-installer is in the netboot CD? I need to use an
official Debian mirror to get past this point, which is kinda bad
since I do have my own partial mirror.

After the Debian base system is installed, I can configure apt to use
my partial mirror and install the rest of Debian from there.

There's no trap. Debmirror does not mirror the debian-installer
directory. The file not found error is correct, the partial mirror
does not have those debian-installer files the installer tries to
wget.

My bad. It is NETINST cd image, it was about 110MB.

Should the netinst cd image still wget debian-installer from Debian
mirror?

Can I translate to Finnish only the Howto appendix of the installation manual?

2004-10-03 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
I'm thinking about translating the Installation Howto appendix in the
installation manual to Finnish. But it seems like it is built as part
of the whole manual. Can I translate just this one file and finnish
translation can be used in the Debian web page and perhaps printed on
paper?

I have the manual checked out from svn already as part of the
debian-installer.

Comments/Problems:

I boot with linux26. Boot works from IDE CD, kernel module for Adaptec
SCSI is chosen. Hard disk is SCSI. But installer fails to find the
SCSI drive. I installed this same machine with RC1, then it worked.

When I had USB memory plugged in, that was the only disk the
partitioner offered for installing to. I removed all USB-stuff. Then
installer complained it did not find any disk to install into.

Next I tried removing all IDE Chipset Drivers. Same result, installer
can not find any hard disk.

Next I removed the CD and tried booting from the SCSI hard to make
sure it has not disappeared. Boot works, and I got the lscpi info.

So I failed to install this machine with pre-RC2.

I also saw the known error of red background. The installer screen
background was sometimes red. Seemed random, most of the times it was
blue but I did get red twice. Even when it was red, some screens
showed blue bagkground, but the next screen was again red.

No logs, install did not proceed that far.

I continue to try installing on this Dell Poweredge 1400SC.

If I use

it finds the SCSI hard disk. Have not yet tried further, but I suppose
the install would work with this kernel.

I started shell in the installer, there lsmod shows that aic7xxs is
loaded but used is 0.

This Dell 1400SC has Adaptec AIC-7899 with Fujitsu model MAN3184MP.

I attach dmesg output from the running system, installed with the
previous installer. It has kernel 2.6.7-1-386. This system works OK.

The first screen, choose country, has red background. It continues
with red, except some screen had blue background. Seems today every
time I boot I get red. Yesterday it was blue most of the times.

Hello,

the debian-installer is translated to finnish, so maybe some things in
that work might be useful to you. Just to inform you, I know estonian
is only slightly similar to finnish.

You may find, like I did with finnish, that one timeconsuming part of
the work is to invent translations. Debian-installer contains
terminology for which no finnish word, and I assume no estonian word
either, exists. Translations found in a dictionary may look silly, and
can be completely misleading.

mke2fs can be run anytime. See man page about option -R, it allows
setting stride. Some file system parameters can be altered for an
existing filesystem with tune2fs, better unmount the fs first.

Or perhaps I did not understand the question?

The language code in debian/langlist is needed if user is going to run
buildone.sh. If the code was missing when running the scripts,
buildone.sh reports missing language or some such error. I don't mean
to check the changed file in, just edit the local copy to get the
scripts to generate the necessary language files. I got only 22%
complete finnish translation, so I am not going to want you to build
finnish for ages yet.

The build requirements may well be available in some other document,
but it is frustrating to read a seemingly step-by-step guide for doing
something, and then discover when following the instructions to the
point that some steps are left out. I got the buildone.sh running
after doing those two additional things.

But it is OK for me to leave them out. After all, I already found out
they are needed and don't need that info anymore. If others stumble
upon the same problem, let them do their own work. :-)

Installer manual, paragraph difficult to understand

2006-08-17 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
I do not understand the following paragraph in partitioning.po.

Unless you wish to use the disk you are partitioning from Tru64 Unix
or one of the free 4.4BSD-Lite derived operating systems (FreeBSD,
OpenBSD, or NetBSD), it is suggested that you do
not make the third partition contain the whole
disk. This is not required by aboot, and in fact,
it may lead to confusion since the swriteboot
utility used to install aboot in the boot sector
will complain about a partition overlapping with the boot block.

Does it mean:

1) If the disk previously contained Tru64 Unix or one of the free
4.4BSD-Lite ..., the third partition should not contain the whole disk
if you want to use the disk for GNU/Linux only.

or

2) Only if you are partitioning the disk using partitioning tools from
Tru64 Unix or one of the free 4.4.BSD-Lite ..., is it suggested that
you do not make the third partition contain the whole
disk.

Why manual po-file msgids one long line?

2006-08-18 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
Is it necessary to have the installer guide msgids in po files one
huge line? It would seem to me they could be indented to make them
more readable.

I mean, text like this is pretty bad for reading:

msgid ""
"The benefit you gain depends on a type of a MD device you are creating. "
"Currently supported are: RAID0 Is mainly aimed at performance. RAID0 splits all "
"incoming data into stripes and distributes them "
"equally over each disk in the array. This can increase the speed of read/"
"write operations, but when one of the disks fails, you will loose "
"everything (part of the information is still on the "
"healthy disk(s), the other part was on the failed "
"disk). The typical use for RAID0 is a partition for video "
"editing.RAID1 Is suitable for setups where reliability is the first "
"concern. It consists of several (usually two) equally sized partitions where "
"every partition contains exactly the same data. This essentially means three "
"things. First, if one of your disks fails, you still have the data mirrored "
"on the remaining disks. Second, you can use only a fraction of the available "
"capacity (more precisely, it is the size of the smallest partition in the "
"RAID). Third, file reads are load balanced among the disks, which can "
"improve performance on a server, such as a file server, that tends to be "
...

I did not find a readymade program for indenting xml, but I could
write some python code to make the above indented sensibly. I was
planning setting a max line length and starting a new line for tags
like , , etc.

What about writing the msgid like this:

If you want to use Tru64 Unix or one of the free 4.4BSD-Lite operating
systems (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, or NetBSD) on this same disk, the third
partition must be created as a whole disk partition
(i.e. with start and end sectors to span the whole disk). The third
partition should not be a whole disk partition if none of these
other operating systems are on the disk, as it renders the disk
incompatible with the tools used to make it bootable with
aboot. Normal third partition means that the disk configured by the
installer for use as the Debian boot disk will be inaccessible to the
operating systems mentioned earlier.

Bug#382989: bug: some screens appear in english or finnish

2006-08-24 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
Tried installing on another machine, different hardware. Now all
screens were in finnish. In the first install I got some completely
english screens.

It may be the glitch I mentioned. It may be caused by pressing the
screenshot button at the wrong time, or something. I tried to get
screenshot every time the button was not greyed out, but the glitch
may be caused by pressing the button when the installer was busy with
something.

Thess screens were in english at the first install, in finnish in the second:

  http://taleman.fi/Asennusgalleria/220_finish-install_reboot_in_progress_0.png

Other screenshots are in that same directory, numbered so the appear
in order.

Please tell me the minimal build I can execute to get error messages
from missing or extra \n's. I really would like to commit only stuff
that the compiler accepts.

They are in some .ent -file, should be in the fr -subdirectory. If
not, look for the other language directories.

Bug#471501: Better syslog

2008-03-21 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
Now with better syslog. In english and contains

Get:226 http://apt-proxy lenny/main synaptic 0.61+b1 [2124kB]
Err http://apt-proxy lenny/main synaptic 0.61+b1

I stopped and started apt-proxy before install. This way all files
were retrieved without errors and pretty fast. I tried this twice,
seems apt-proxy works if it is restarted just prior to installation.

To get the retreiving files to fail, I restarted apt-proxy in the
middle of the third install. Now syslog has those errors about not
being able to get files.

I added set -x to pkgsel.postinst when installer showed "Partition
disks", in the "Write changes to disk" step.

Error in Installation Guide, amd64 for EM64T?

2006-09-01 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
Installation guide says in Chapter 2:

"If your system has a 64-bits AMD64, Intel EM64t or Intel Core 2 Duo
processor, you will probably want to use the installer for the amd64
architecture instead of the installer for the (32-bits) i386
architecture."

Is this really true? What is installer for i64 good for, then?

Or does Intel have in addtition to EM64t prosessors another kind of
64-bit prosessor that is not compatible with amd64?

Character set mixup in tasksel_po_fi.po and iso-codes_iso_3166.po

2006-09-15 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
The two files mentioned in subject have non-ASCII characters messed
up. It seems to me they are not in any valid encoding. I could not get
them fixed with recode.

The file iso-codes_iso_3166.po was OK in revision 608, but I did not
check in which revision exactly the erroneous encoding creeps in. Is
there a way in svn to see an individual file in arbitrary revision
without checking out the whole source tree each time?

Please, word diff for fuzzied translatable strings

2006-09-19 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
When sending a .po file to be translated, please include word diff for
strings that are marked fuzzy. It is much easier to unfuzzy when I can
see what has changed in the english text.

I can look the diff myself in version control, but it saves work if
one developer sending the file makes the diff, compared to 40
translators doing the same work.

Comments/Problems:

Install was low memory mode, but this machine has 64MB memory.
Is installation from floppy always "low memory mode"?
Installation did not ask anything about which modules to load etc.,
which I think it should ask if it really is low memory mode install.

I deselected "standard system" from tasksel display, thinking I
can install that later, but it is not available when I start tasksel
in the installed system. So now some of the standard packages
are not installed.

Console keymap was not set up, the åäö keys did not work from console.

I'm not sure if this is the fault of the installer:
aptitude et al complain about GPG error and untrusted sources.
Are the keyrings in /etc/apt wrong or is the mirror I use,
ftp.fi.debian.org somehow wrong just now?

I can provide log files on request.

Bug#397790: installation-guide: Typos in boot-installer.po

2006-11-09 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
Package: installation-guide
Severity: minor

Some problems in boot-installer.po

It uses Enter in a few places. Better would be to
use &enterkey; always.

The architecture name IA-64 is written in three different ways, (IA64,
ia64), write it the same way always.

It looks to me that the msgid

"Proceed to the next chapter to continue the installation where you will set "
"up the language locale, network, and disk partitions."

is in the file twice. At least I can not spot the difference, if any,
between them.

I think the installation report form should not be marked
translatable. At least it is my understanding, that installation
reports should only be sent in in english. So it falsely encourages
users to write the report in finnish if I translate it.

isses should be issues in

"Some DMA related isses with older CD-ROM drives "
"are known to be resolved in this way."

The package tmispell-voikko might be used in the workflow.

The usual spellchecking stuff does not work very well for a language
like Finnish.

Comments/Problems:
Installation worked, after disabling ACPI and two serial ports in BIOS.
Before that Ethernet seemed to send but not receive
(DHCPDISCOVER and DHCPOFFER visible on DHCP-server, client claimed not
to get configuration).

What does not work is keyboard when at login prompt of the installed
system. Keyboard worked in Installer, and does work in GRUB and if
I boot in single user mode (writing this as root because in single user
mode). I noticed that keyboard also stopped working when I
got to rescue mode in Installer. Keyboard worked before that, I got
to rescue mode just fine via the menu choices, but once there no keypress
seemed to register.

I marked this bug serious because on this particular hardware Lenny can not
be used since naive user can not log in or do anything else either.

Bug#534176: Acknowledgement (installation-report: Keyboard stops working when login prompt reached)

Now keyboard seems to work.

Previously I noticed that booting into single-user mode, logging in as
root and then going to runlevel 2 with Control-D gave me a working
keyboard.

I turned off ACIP support previously, because the two ethernet cards
did not get network settings from DHCP. I could see DHCPDISCOVER and
DHCPOFFER on the DHCP-server, but the client claimed no answer came.

I was going to make this into a firewall, so I need two Ethernet
cards.

The following text would in my opinion be better with the proposed change.

"the much more common 64-bit processors from the EM64T family (including e.g. "
"the Pentium D and the Core2 Duo). Those systems are supported by "
"the amd64 architecture or, if you prefer a 32-bit "
"userland, the i386 architecture."

Instead start the first sentence:

The next sentence I would in the same fashion like to change to

To translate or not to translate?

2010-05-04 Thread Tapio Lehtonen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

The d-i manual in file preseed.po has several msgids like these:

msgid "debian-installer/framebuffer"
msgid "language"
msgid "debian-installer/language"
msgid "country"
msgid "debian-installer/country"

It seems to me debian-installer/framebuffer is a name of a variable in the
installer user interface, and should not be translated. More difficult to know
whether to translate or not are those plain language, country etc. msgids. Since
the appear in the middle of the debian-installer/* msgids, I guess they too are
names of something.

If indeed these should not be translated, is it possible to get them marked as
such in the original text to get them removed from the .po file? Or perhaps add
comment to explain what the translator should do with them?

Install in expert mode, then you can tell the installer to not use
DHCP. Type expert in the installer boot: prompt.

Or give the MAC address of your ethernet card to the network admin so
he/she can add that to DHCP and assing it the IP number you want.

Comments/Problems:

When rebooting after install GRUB does not work, it prints
  GRUB Hard Disk Error ()
That in top right corner may be from BIOS or something.

I installed with linux26, partition whole disk, all files in one
partition and GRUB in MBR. Also tried making a small /boot and putting
swap first and / to second partition, all with same results,
i.e. reboot fails.

If I choose to use LILO, the computer reboots and works OK and I can
continue installing more stuff and all things seem to work. Except
on-board Creative VIBRA16X does not work, but I read that installing
isapnptools activates it. I'll try to work with that later.

I updated the BIOS to latest version, but that did not change
things. Now BIOS is version 1.34, it was 1.31.

Booted with Knoppix 3.7 to get the lspci stuff and log files.

I copied the contenst of /var/log/debian-installer to
http://people.debian.org/~tale/vkatu2/debian-installer/

I can keep this host available for more installation tests, if needed,
for lets say until 11th January. If this bug is not interesting, I
would like to take this machine to the end user right away.

Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/.

Then something is wrong with your apt-setup or the install server you
get the packages from. Check what is in /etc/apt/sources.list and run
  apt-get update
to see it can access the install server repositories. Or if you
install from a CD, that CD does not have a full set of Debian Sarge
packages.

Kenshi Muto's netinst image - 125MB mini-CD installer for Debian 3.1
"sarge" on i386, using the sarge d-i installer and kernel version
2.6.14. Compatibility to Debian: excellent.

Output of lspci -knn (or lspci -nn):
Will provide this later when I boot the panel pc again.

Comments/Problems: Installer did not find Compact Flash card or SD-card installed in
card reader. Only "hard disk" found was the USB memory I booted from.

Could not continue with the install, since target media was not detected. Still,
this is better than Lenny where installation ended in kernel panic after
getting network settings from DHCP (seems driver for ethernet is only in newer
kernels).

Bug#598601: Now successfull install PDX-057T-5A

2010-10-01 Thread Tapio Lehtonen

Subject: installation-reports: PDX-057T-5A successful install
Package: installation-reports
Severity: minor

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Installation successfull with some tweaking. This host has problems with naming
memory cards and
USB-memory sticks. Had to reset BIOS to default values and do the two changes
manual suggests for Linux
installs:

Please forced the IDE setting in BIOS to PIO mode before install Linux
on PDX-057T as follows:
1-Go to the advanced BIOS setting and make the “Onboard IDE Operate Mode” is
“Legacy Mode”
2-Go to the PCI/PnP and make the “PCI IDE BusMaster” is “Disable"

Then SD-card showed up as /dev/sdb and USB stick as /dev/sda. Boot media was
USB stick, installed on
SD-card. I guessed boot fails because SD card becomes /dev/sda when USB-stick
is removed, so at the
boot after installation I changed GRUB2 config, changed
  set root='(hd1,msdos1)'
to
  set root='(hd0,msdos1)'

Now panel pc works fine.
