KDE is installed because I chose the Desktop task. However, it does not install kde-i18n-fi, although I chose country and language as Finland and finnish. The only language available in KDE is english. Gnome works in finnish. Bug: X Window keyboard is USA. Finnish keyboard works in console, but X Window uses USA keyboard. X Window configuration went OK, except it did not ask what keyboard I want. I used the default level for questions. These lines are in /etc/X11/XF86config-4: Option "XkbRules" "xfree86" Option "XkbModel" "pc104" Option "XkbLayout" "us" For finnish keyboards, there should be pc105 and fi. Other finnish users have wanted fi_FI.utf8 as default finnish locale. I use that too, but change the locale with dpkg-reconfigure locales. Some typos and bad wording in finnish texts, but I'm one of the finnish translators so those I have to fix myself. There was one user who specifically says the finnish translation is good. PS Bug: The gdm login screen was in finnish and even after a reboot I'm almost sure it was in finnish. Now it is in english even if I changes in from Language drop down menu to finnish. Your CD-burning program may recognise the .iso ending and do the right thing, or you need to choose the correct way to burn it. If you list the files in the CD and it shows sarge-i386-netinst.iso then you copied the file to the CD and that will not boot. -- Tapio Lehtonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG public key from http://www.iki.fi/Tapio.Lehtonen signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Strange merge conflicts in d-i/tools/cdrom-detect/debian/po/fi.po
How come d-i/tools/cdrom-detect/debian/po/fi.po is so messed up? I can't make heads or tails of the file due to the numerous strange merge conflicts. It looks like two guite different files have been merged together. KBabel does not want to touch the file, the merge conflict markings confuse it. I tried to fix them but kbabel refuses to save the file while it still has errors. Even the header has two different POT-Creation-Dates, like there really is two teams writing this file. I decided to toss the fi.po and copy templates.pot. I'll copy the translated strings there manually. Still would like to know what caused the merge conflicts. -- Tapio Lehtonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG public key from http://www.iki.fi/Tapio.Lehtonen http://www.taleman.fi/ IT-alan asiantuntijapalvelut Porissa pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#239078: install: Beta3, BIOS does not boot CD
Package: install Version: N/A; reported 2004-03-20 Severity: normal Downloaded Debian Installer Beta 3 from http://www.dk.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/, the 100MB image for i386. Checked the md5sum, it matches. I have downloaded the .iso twice and written it to two blank CD, one R and the other RW, both fail to boot on this one machine. I booted and run Knoppix 3.2 succesfully. I dowloaded Knoppix 3.3 and wrote it on the same cd-writer I used for the installer cd, this also boots and works. So, this computer can boot all other bootable cd I had, and I can write OK cds on my CD-burner. Thus I conclude that sarge-i386-netinst.iso somehow is defective, this BIOS can not boot it. I get "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" Info on the host where the CD won't boot: Motherboard: ASUS A7V ASUS A7V ACPI BIOS revision 1004C The following collected with Knoppix 3.3. # fdisk -l Levy /dev/hdd: 10.2 Gt, 10246053888 tavua 16 päätä, 63 sektoria/ura, 19853 sylinteriä Yksiköt = 1008 * 512 = 516096 -tavuiset sylinterit Laite Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdd1 1 1985310005880+ c W95 FAT32 (LBA) Levy /dev/hda: 30.7 Gt, 30738677760 tavua 255 päätä, 63 sektoria/ura, 3737 sylinteriä Yksiköt = 16065 * 512 = 8225280 -tavuiset sylinterit Laite Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 1 6 48163+ 83 Linux /dev/hda2 7 37 249007+ 82 Linux-sivutus /dev/hda3 381861146512807 HPFS/NTFS /dev/hda4 *1862373715068970 83 Linux # lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. It is more work, because I edited the image files to crop them and reduce the number of colors, this way the files were quite small. See http://www.taleman.fi/ESKK/x128.html I learned that the camera should be on a tripod or you gotta learn how the autofocus works on your camera. I quess you can use a serial console, if you have another computer where you can get screenshots of the terminal window. WMWare or some other meta-os works also, I believe this is the way most istallation images in books are taken. -- Tapio Lehtonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG public key from http://www.iki.fi/Tapio.Lehtonen pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

How to create partial mirror of debian for testing d-i?
Hello, how do I create a partial mirror of Debian for testing debian-installer? I use debmirror to create an install server on my local LAN, and it works for installing packages, but debian-installer needs in addition dists/sarge/main/debian-installer dists/sarge/main/installer-i386 which I copied there by hand. Then d-i needed ddetect in pool, at which point I gave up, since it looked like this may go on forever if I need to copy packages one by one. Re: Dell PowerEdge 2450 boot

Anyway, the only the PERC/SC is supported in Linux kernel. The other Adaptec SCSI RAID controllers that Dell has in its latest machines are not supported in Linux kernel, Adaptec only provides a binary only driver that works with a specific version of Red Hat kernel. If you already bought the stack of Dell servers, bad luck. Otherwise explain to your sales representative that you need a SCSI controller that is supported by the Linux kernel (add that you mean Linux kernel, not Red Hat kernel). I had this problem every time I needed to purchase a Dell server, seems they use a different Adaptec chip in almost all new server models. As for compiling the kernel, for servers especially it is well worth the effort the compile your own kernel, so you can get the most of your servers. Just include those things that you need and leave out all the rest. Use the Debian package kernel-package to do the compilation, you get a .deb file that you can easily install to all the similar servers. Disclaimer: This was the situation six months ago. Bug#410512: Further information, new USB-stick works
I continued trying the installation from USB-memory, this time with another memory stick, this time 512 MB. The longer method with syslinux and copying files on stick by hand produced on booting the message: No operating system found When I did install-mbr, I got MBR Boot failure Next I tried zcatting the boot.img.gz, I worked with the same set of files as on saturday. This worked, boot went OK and I installed successfully. Is it somehow possible to know before trying all methods and different USB memories what way of creating the USB boot media works? Or a simpler and faster way than trying installation to check if the created USB memory is OK? I used the USB memory I tried first, the 256 MB size, two and a half years ago to install this same host. Then the only way I got it to boot was with GRUB. -- Tapio Lehtonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.iki.fi/tapio.lehtonen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#410354: Suomi vs. Suomeksi
I did not see an e-mail about this, but was contacted in IRC and read the bug report. I translated "Suomeksi", because at one time it was asked to use "in Finnish" as the original text, so I changed "Suomi" to "Suomeksi". Timo Jyrinki is correct in pointing out that this is factually wrong and inconsistent with the other languages. It is OK to change this to "Suomi", and I won't raise a fuss, but "Suomeksi" is good in showing that it is language, not country. With capital first letter, "Suomi" can be country or language. I like "Suomeksi", because choosing that shows the installer "in Finnish", so it is a good translation. -- Tapio Lehtonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.iki.fi/tapio.lehtonen signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#410354: Change 'Suomeksi' to 'suomi'
After discussions on irc, e-mail and BTS, I have come to the conclusion that "suomi" is the best translation. Rationale: this is the official way the name of the finnish language is written in finnish. The translation "Suomeksi" works in this particular Debian context, but to be consistent with the Debian web pages "suomi" is better. Additionally, since I was told Debian localechooser is used as upstream for some other uses of language names, it is best to use the official language name. Could this bug be reopend to get this change applied? -- Tapio Lehtonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.iki.fi/tapio.lehtonen signature.asc Description: Digital signature

It is in english, except after Choose Country or Region is a line of broken finnish. Menu lines 6 11 are also in finnish, but they are correctly written because they contain no a with umlaut characters. I tried with choosing swedish as language at the beginning. In this case the choosing country or region works, it asks me if I'm FI or SV. But the problem with a with umlaut characters replaced with spaces persists. When I get to Debian installer main menu screen, it has some lines in swedish. The a with umlauts are wiped out, but there are o with umlaut and a with ring. Strange, this is not a font or display only in ASCII problem, it is just the a with umlaut that will not display. I installed another machine yesterday also, booting from usb-memory (with grub, luckily found instructions on [EMAIL PROTECTED]). There finnish worked correctly and all texts displayd as they should. The problem with choosing country being a no-op was there. -- Tapio Lehtonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG public key from http://www.iki.fi/Tapio.Lehtonen signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I think I understood the README and only included the characters not already in ASCII. Finnish uses also the a with ring, but not in any text currently in installer, so I put it only in sv. The euro sign is in both languages, but not used in installer. Why netboot CD needs to wget debian-installer?
I think installer wants files from remote mirror that are already in CD-drive. I booted from pre-RC2 floppies, boot, root, and cd-drivers. Then installer found SCSI CD-drive and pre-RC2 netboot cd image there. Then I told it to use my own partial mirror, created with command debmirror /opt/mirror/debian --nosource --passive \ --host=ftp.fi.debian.org --dist=sarge --arch=i386 \ --section=main,contrib,non-free --progress and served with HTTP server. But installer fails to use it, claiming file not found. From /var/log/apache2/access.log I find 172.22.28.244 - - [03/Oct/2004:13:10:00 +0300] "GET /debian//dists/sarge/Release HTTP/1.1" 200 22828 "-" "Wget" 172.22.28.244 - - [03/Oct/2004:13:10:03 +0300] "GET /debian//dists/testing/Release HTTP/1.1" 200 22828 "-" "Wget" 172.22.28.244 - - [03/Oct/2004:13:10:03 +0300] "GET /debian//dists/testing/main/debian-installer/binary-i386/Packages.gz HTTP/1.1" 404 422 "-" "Wget" 172.22.28.244 - - [03/Oct/2004:13:10:03 +0300] "GET /debian//dists/testing/main/debian-installer/binary-i386/Packages HTTP/1.1" 404 419 "-" "Wget" And /var/log/apache2/error.log states [Sun Oct 03 13:10:03 2004] [error] [client 172.22.28.244] File does not exist: /var/www/debian/dists/testing/main/debian-installer [Sun Oct 03 13:10:03 2004] [error] [client 172.22.28.244] File does not exist: /var/www/debian/dists/testing/main/debian-installer Surely the debian-installer is in the netboot CD? I need to use an official Debian mirror to get past this point, which is kinda bad since I do have my own partial mirror. After the Debian base system is installed, I can configure apt to use my partial mirror and install the rest of Debian from there. -- Tapio Lehtonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG public key from http://www.iki.fi/Tapio.Lehtonen signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I'm thinking about translating the Installation Howto appendix in the installation manual to Finnish. But it seems like it is built as part of the whole manual. If the code was missing when running the scripts, buildone.sh reports missing language or some such error. I don't mean to check the changed file in, just edit the local copy to get the scripts to generate the necessary language files. I got only 22% complete finnish translation, so I am not going to want you to build finnish for ages yet. The build requirements may well be available in some other document, but it is frustrating to read a seemingly step-by-step guide for doing something, and then discover when following the instructions to the point that some steps are left out. I got the buildone.sh running after doing those two additional things. But it is OK for me to leave them out. After all, I already found out they are needed and don't need that info anymore. Installer manual, paragraph difficult to understand
I do not understand the following paragraph in partitioning.po. Unless you wish to use the disk you are partitioning from Tru64 Unix or one of the free 4.4BSD-Lite derived operating systems (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, or NetBSD), it is suggested that you do not make the third partition contain the whole disk. This is not required by aboot, and in fact, it may lead to confusion since the swriteboot utility used to install aboot in the boot sector will complain about a partition overlapping with the boot block. Does it mean: 1) If the disk previously contained Tru64 Unix or one of the free 4.4BSD-Lite ..., the third partition should not contain the whole disk if you want to use the disk for GNU/Linux only. or 2) Only if you are partitioning the disk using partitioning tools from Tru64 Unix or one of the free 4.4.BSD-Lite ..., is it suggested that you do not make the third partition contain the whole disk. -- Tapio Lehtonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.iki.fi/tapio.lehtonen signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Why manual po-file msgids one long line?
Is it necessary to have the installer guide msgids in po files one huge line? It would seem to me they could be indented to make them more readable. I mean, text like this is pretty bad for reading: msgid "" "The benefit you gain depends on a type of a MD device you are creating. " "Currently supported are: RAID0 Is mainly aimed at performance. RAID0 splits all " "incoming data into stripes and distributes them " "equally over each disk in the array. This can increase the speed of read/" "write operations, but when one of the disks fails, you will loose " "everything (part of the information is still on the " "healthy disk(s), the other part was on the failed " "disk). The typical use for RAID0 is a partition for video " "editing.RAID1 Is suitable for setups where reliability is the first " "concern. It consists of several (usually two) equally sized partitions where " "every partition contains exactly the same data. This essentially means three " "things. First, if one of your disks fails, you still have the data mirrored " "on the remaining disks. Second, you can use only a fraction of the available " "capacity (more precisely, it is the size of the smallest partition in the " "RAID). Third, file reads are load balanced among the disks, which can " "improve performance on a server, such as a file server, that tends to be " ... I did not find a readymade program for indenting xml, but I could write some python code to make the above indented sensibly. I was planning setting a max line length and starting a new line for tags like , , etc. -- Tapio Lehtonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.iki.fi/tapio.lehtonen signature.asc Description: Digital signature

This means that the disk configured by the installer > for use as the Debian boot disk will be inaccessible to $those_OSes. What about writing the msgid like this: If you want to use Tru64 Unix or one of the free 4.4BSD-Lite operating systems (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, or NetBSD) on this same disk, the third partition must be created as a whole disk partition (i.e. with start and end sectors to span the whole disk). The third partition should not be a whole disk partition if none of these other operating systems are on the disk, as it renders the disk incompatible with the tools used to make it bootable with aboot. Normal third partition means that the disk configured by the installer for use as the Debian boot disk will be inaccessible to the operating systems mentioned earlier. -- Tapio Lehtonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.iki.fi/tapio.lehtonen signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Before that Ethernet seemed to send but not receive (DHCPDISCOVER and DHCPOFFER visible on DHCP-server, client claimed not to get configuration). What does not work is keyboard when at login prompt of the installed system. Keyboard worked in Installer, and does work in GRUB and if I boot in single user mode (writing this as root because in single user mode). I noticed that keyboard also stopped working when I got to rescue mode in Installer. Keyboard worked before that, I got to rescue mode just fine via the menu choices, but once there no keypress seemed to register. To translate or not to translate?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 The d-i manual in file preseed.po has several msgids like these: msgid "debian-installer/framebuffer" msgid "language" msgid "debian-installer/language" msgid "country" msgid "debian-installer/country" It seems to me debian-installer/framebuffer is a name of a variable in the installer user interface, and should not be translated. More difficult to know whether to translate or not are those plain language, country etc. msgids. Since the appear in the middle of the debian-installer/* msgids, I guess they too are names of something. If indeed these should not be translated, is it possible to get them marked as such in the original text to get them removed from the .po file? Bug#598601: Now successfull install PDX-057T-5A
Subject: installation-reports: PDX-057T-5A successful install Package: installation-reports Severity: minor *** Please type your report below this line *** Installation successfull with some tweaking. This host has problems with naming memory cards and USB-memory sticks. Had to reset BIOS to default values and do the two changes manual suggests for Linux installs: Please forced the IDE setting in BIOS to PIO mode before install Linux on PDX-057T as follows: 1-Go to the advanced BIOS setting and make the âOnboard IDE Operate Modeâ is âLegacy Modeâ 2-Go to the PCI/PnP and make the âPCI IDE BusMasterâ is âDisable" [http://www.microcomputersystems.com/PDX-057T_UM_v1r0A.pdf] Then SD-card showed up as /dev/sdb and USB stick as /dev/sda. Boot media was USB stick, installed on SD-card. I guessed boot fails because SD card becomes /dev/sda when USB-stick is removed, so at the boot after installation I changed GRUB2 config, changed set root='(hd1,msdos1)' to set root='(hd0,msdos1)' Now panel pc works fine. -- Package-specific info: Boot method: USB memory stick Image version: http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/images/daily/hd-media/ 30-Sep-2010 Date: Machine: PDX-057T-5A panel pc Vortex86 SoC Partitions: Base System Installation Checklist: [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Initial boot: [O] Detect network card:[O] Configure network: [O] Detect CD: [ ] Load installer modules: [O] Detect hard drives: [O] Partition hard drives: [O] Install base system:[O] Clock/timezone setup: [O] User/password setup:[O] Install tasks: [O] Install boot loader:[O] Overall install:[O] Comments/Problems: -- Please make sure that the hardware-summary log file, and any other installation logs that you think would be useful are attached to this report.
