Bug#266242: port 80 makes for a bad default for a http proxy
Package: debian-installer Version: 20040801 (tftp) Severity: normal In the 'choose a mirror' part the user is asked for a HTTP proxy. If one only gives http:/// as the proxy, the installer picks a default port of 80 for the requests, which is a bad idea. In my case I got | Bad Archive Mirror | The specified archive mirror is either not available or does not have | a valid Release file. blabla Reason being of course that on port 80 there's an apache which is not really a proxy server. A better default would be 3128 (squid's default port) or 8080. -- Peter -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

removing ftp:// from mirrors lists
Hi, talking to several mirror operators on IRC (including fewllow DSA members), I get the impression that a lot of us would appreciate if we could deprecate the FTP as a transport protocol. I suggest we start by removing ftp:// links from the various mirror pages and from the mirror masterlist. The latter is also used by the installer, AIUI. -boot folks, can we just go ahead and kill the *-ftp: entries from Mirrors.masterlist? Do you have any objections or do you need some time before we do that? Bug#411367: Disclosing MAC Address is not d-i thing
On Sun, 18 Feb 2007, Geert Stappers wrote: > tag 411367 wontfix > stop > > The wish to disclose the MAC address during installation doesn't make sense. I disagree. Most of my servers have dual ethernet chips. I know which MAC is connected because tftp/dhcp already have that information. What makes matters more difficult is that half the time the "Port 1" and "Port 2" labels on the chassis refer to eth0 and eth1, the other half it's eth1 and eth0 (i.e. reversed). It's always the same guesswork which is unnecessary and time consuming. > Using^WAbusing the installer for display the MAC address is IMNSHO plain > wrong. > Networkadministrators how do need the MAC address should check the actual > hardware, the documentation it came with or find another way like > switching console and using ifconfig. Which means going out all the way to the main screen, selecing execute a shell, and then running ifconfig -a. When you install using serial console this is an annoying task that takes far longer than it should to get this information. Please reconsider. mac address or at least a link active/not active, but that's already reported as #411367. The sparc installer appears to lack raid1 setup capabilities, which I did miss. The default curses interface is not nice to use over a 9600 serial, next time I need to try with a different frontend. Bug#503464: hangs at language selection
