Are you aware of any restrictions in how the internal flash may be
partitioned?

If, for example, I was happy to dedicate the internal flash to Debian,
is there any reason not to simply have three partitions:
   - nv-uboot
   - /boot
   - root
?

(Maybe even avoiding /boot if nv-uboot can read the root.)

were changed to XFS.

Output of lspci -knn (or lspci -nn):

Comments/Problems:
During the installation of the Debian Beta 1 as a VirtualBox guest (18GB
disk allocated for it), default settings are accepted, except:
- locale US, keyboard Slovenian (SI),
- LVM with proposed partitions and encryption is chosen, but all filesystem
types changed to XFS

After installation is finished and reboot is proposed, reboot fails.
Screenshot is attached.

Another thing I've spotted is the size of a swap proposed - less than 1GB
(having 4GB of RAM). Shouldn't that be at least 4GB (how is hibernation
done)?

Comments/Problems:

Most problems I encountered are probably minor glitches that can easily
be corrected, but they probably are quite frustrating for the novice
user.

1.) Network configuration seems to hang if non-free firmware is missing

I hadn't realized that the ipw2915abg WLAN card in the R52 needs a
non-free firmware package and thus hadn't provided this on the install
medium. This caused the installer to seemingly "hang" when configuring
the network. It turned out that the installer tried to access a floppy
drive that is not present on my system although the controller is.

2.) License dialogs' text overlaps the buttons at the bottom

The firmware package for the ipw2x00 chipsets presents a license dialog
during the installation and prompts to accept or decline the license.
However, the text of the license is too long and overlaps the buttons
at the bottom of the dialog. This makes it impossible to accept the
license as you can't see which button will be selected. I ended up
continuing the installation via the wired network interface present.

(This problem popped up again during the package installation stage.)

3.) Seemingly no WPA encryption for WLAN interfaces

Before abandoning the installation via the WLAN interface, I noticed
that there is seemingly no method to configure the WPA encryption
of a WLAN interface, probably because wpa-supplicant is missing at
this stage. This makes a network based installation impossible for
users that have a WPA protected WLAN (increasingly common, at least
here in Germany) and no other means of getting connectivity.

In my opinion the installer should offer WPA encryption or at least
should state prominently that installation via an WPA protected
WLAN is impossible.

Greetings from Stuttgart,

=ToJe=

http://mister-muffin.de/p/Ai7F.png

Also notice the wrong menu entries.

The same error happens with more minimal preseed files.

It turns out that the problem only occurs when having:

d-i mirror/suite string sid
d-i mirror/udeb/suite string sid

When choosing wheezy instead, everything is fine.

I gathered debug output with the DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer option and with
this preseed file:

http://mister-muffin.de/debian/preseed2.txt

(which will produce the following interrupting main menu:
http://mister-muffin.de/p/qlbd.png)

Here is the syslog from the point where the menu appeared:

http://mister-muffin.de/p/a1nJ.txt

And here a tarball of the directory, which is created after hitting
"save debug logs" in the main menu:

http://mister-muffin.de/p/sS_r

Comments/Problems:

System will not boot successfully AFTER installation is done. During
installation no problems were visible, but system just hangs on reboot (grub
works fine though. The "hang" appears during device identification after that.
I cannot really say because booting process is really fast on the SSD. So it is
possible the system hangs when trying to load into graphical mode probably
because of the Intel P4000 Graphics (Server-Variant of HD4000)

Installer booted fine, was able to configure network/setup users,
etc., without a problem. When partitioning, I chose to partition with
the default layout, which then failed with the error:
'The ufs file system creation in partition #1 of ATA1 (ad0) failed.'

cat'ing /var/log/syslog says:
'partman: mkfs.ufs:
partman: /dev/ad0s1: could not find special device'

ls /dev/, however, shows:
ad0
ad0s1
ad0s2
ad0s5

I see a semi-related bug report:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=610885

which suggests disabling swap, but this did not help for me. I also
tried manually partitioning and making the swap partition a primary
rather than logical partition, but this too did not help.

Cheers,
Austin

The initial boot menu says "Install Debian GNU/kFreeBSD 32 bits" but the
normal term is "32 bit".

In the install menus the first character isn't highlighted when the item
is selected.

In the task select I selected the "Graphical desktop environment" but
this didn't result in a graphical desktop environment after install.
xorg was installed but only a few bits of GNOME were. I suspect this is
because currently 'apt-get install gnome' gives "Package gnome is not
available, but is referred to by another package.". Running startx gave
a black screen. Installed XFCE4 which runs fine. xorg runs correctly
without the need for an xorg.conf file.

Despite choosing UK keyboard on install still had to do
'dpkg-reconfigure kbdcontrol' and choose 'uk.iso.kbd' to get correct
keymap on console and X.

In a ttyv, the menus for 'dpkg-reconfigure kbdcontrol' and 'tasksel'
have ugly window decoration as if the wrong characters have been chosen
and the menu items shift left on first selection.

The '-k' of 'lspci -knn' doesn't work. I guess this is a Linux only
option.

Comments/Problems:

Hello,

Just tried to install kfreebsd-amd64 on a DELL PowerEdge, and it was
quite a failure.

- The Broadcom 14e4:164c card is not recognized, because the bce driver
is disabled due to firmware blob. Since this was a netinst, I
  installed without network.
- The hard disk was properly discovered, but the partitioning step was
awfully slow. I noticed on console 4 that it was complaining about
partitions not being properly aligned on slices, about 5 times, one
per second. There was indeed an already-installer Debian Linux System,
which I was overwriting. It seemed like the existing partitioning
disturbed partman to the point that it kept being busy for 5 seconds
(spitting the warning every second) at basically each step, thus
making the whole process extremely long.
I had chosen ZFS everywhere, and a separate /var and /usr,
- Installation then proceeded fine.
- The boot loader step failed at first. console 4 was complaining that
/boot/zfs wasn't existing. I mkdired it by hand, and then it proceeded
  fine.
- It rebooted fine, I configured the serial console in both grub and
  inittab/securetty.
- However, /usr and /var were not mounted. Actually /etc/fstab did not
even mention them. I tried to mount them by hand, but even though the
zfs module is loaded, I failed to manage to mount them. I've tried the
  following:

root@hermes:/# mount /dev/da0s8 /usr
mount: /dev/da0s8 : Invalid argument
root@hermes:/# mount /dev/da0s8 /usr -t zfs
mount: /dev/da0s8 : Invalid argument
root@hermes:/# mount /dev/da0s8 /usr -t zfs -o local
mount: /dev/da0s8 : Invalid argument

I know very little about kfreebsd, so maybe I am missing some way to
mount it in a more low-level way.

- The zfsutils package is not installed (though I do remember having
seen in the log that partman scheduled its installation, but
apparently the .deb is not on the netinst CD)

- Trying to mount a CD brought me:

root@hermes:/# mount /dev/cd0 /mnt/mnt -t cd9660
mount_cd9660: error while loading shared libraries: libkiconv.so.4: cannot ope

which is indeed supposed to be in /usr/lib

- A last concern is that the hardware network console (BMC) is on COM2,
not COM1, so the -h option to the kernel is not enough to get console
there.

Samuel

Comments/Problems:

There had allready two systems been installed:
'openSuse 10.8' and 'Debian 4 (Etch)', both on logical drives.
After installing 'Debian 7 b4' on /dev/sda1, 'grub2' detected both of them.
But only 'openSuse' was bootable by selecting from the boot-menu.
'Debian 4' wasn´t bootable from the grub2-menu anymore,
even after many trials of editing the menu-entry.

There may be a syntactical break between 'grub2' and 'grub'.
My sugestion would be, to ship the installation with both:
'grub2' and 'grub legacy', as you did with 'Debian 5 (Lenny)'.

Please, give me a re, if this is known problem installing 'grub2'.

Yours,

so your keyboard didnt work when you were supposed to chose a language?

if so, can you try to plugin another usb keyboard or unplug-plug the same
keyboard? does that help?

Linux 3.10 udeb changes

2013-07-16 Thread Ben Hutchings
I've made the following package changes in 3.10, as previously
discussed:

  * [powerpc,x86] Fold nic-extra-modules into nic-modules
  * Remove floppy-modules, irda-modules, parport-modules, plip-modules,
qnx4-modules, reiserfs-modules, ufs-modules

The installer image configuration may need to be updated to take account
of this; in particular I think nic-extra-modules needs to be removed.

Smaller changes:

  * Move i2c-algo-bit to i2c-modules
  * Remove obsolete eth1394 and firewire-core-modules dependency from
nic-modules
  * Add r8152 to nic-usb-modules
  * Add rtl8188ee, ath6kl_usb and mwifiex_usb to nic-wireless-modules
  * Add pm80xx (previously pm8001) to scsi-extra-modules
  * Add virtio_scsi to virtio-modules
  * Remove ppa from scsi-modules

Ben.

sorry for not getting back to you earlier, been busy with non-IT things…
First off, thanks for the heads-ups. I'll try to deal with needed tweaks
based on daily-build failures. Not sure I'll be able to do much more at
the moment.

More information is in my previous installation-reports on archived;

BOOTS UP OK, using the RC1 graphical installer DVD and re ipl's itself
ok after the install.
OK, I get error message "Gnome 3 failed to load", but I am pleased the

DASD chip: On-motherboard HPT370 raid controller 2001
www.highpoint-tech.com (hardware raid)
Is not used by me for 'hardware raid' here now.
The intention was and will be to use the
HPT370 for Debian GNU/Linux MDADM Software raid1 mode (mirroring)
using Debian-GNU/Linux-Squeeze-di-RC1-i386.
Yes, Squeeze RC1 was current when I tried this the first time.

Onboard Hipoint HPT370 UDMA/ATA100 RAID controller BIOS v01.11.0402
HPT370 BIOS Setting Utility screen button F1 toggles the view ARRAY
STATUS shows no array. Good! I am not using any raid
function for this boot, just using the HiPoint controller as an
additional, fast, IDE
controller. Ultra ATA100.

Time goes by; Debian GNU/Linux V7 Wheezy RC1 is now current, Yes
Wheezy, AND IT WORKS.
I have two: IBM-DTLA-307030 drives, intended eventually as primary master and
secondary master connected to the High Point HPT370 controller, The
green sockets on my motherboard,
attached with Ultra ATA100 ribbon cables that have only two plugs on each cable.
the motherboard end and the master device end. Note: no Cable Slave plug.
My intention is still to set up O/S software raid at a later date.

Off Topic, As an aside, these two drives bought from new, Moo, intermitantly.
They always have Moo'ed, just like an animal. A cow in the far distance.
As I live in a rural area, I thought for months that an animal was calling.
I started to get distressed for this animal and began to sound locate
360 degrees.
Having located the origin, this Raid issue allowed me to run one drive
at a time for months and identify that both drives moo. I assume its
the bearings. It does not seem to effect performance. The DASD work.

Comments/Problems:

I did an install which went flawlessly except some mirror trouble (not d-i
problem; apt had issues afterwards with that mirror too)

I then tried rescue mode to make sure I would have it available when I needed.
Overall it works, but there were some things I had to do manually because d-i
doesn't know how to handle my configuration.

I have LVM on crypt on RAID. Rescue mode tries to mount the encrypted
partition but it tries to cryptsetup (password) /dev/hda2 but that is only one
component of a RAID5 device it is part of (which contains an encrypted
partition). It should be running cryptsetup on /dev/md1.

Once I realized that I opened a console and did crypsetup luksOpen on /dev/md1,
and then vgchange -a y volume_group to make the LVM avaible. After that I was
able to return to the normal run a shell on root partition and bit the LVM root
partition.

Hi,

thanks you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all bugs (which are all about RAID) mentioned here and closed
them if
- they indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they were (very) old.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply or just file a new one -
thats often better, as the bug log will be more clear.

cheers,
Holger

Why? My current SD card install doesn't ape any of the Chrome OS labels:

Current uboot can be built with ext4 support.

There is no hardware acceleration as this is a fake raid controller.
The only reason to use it instead of mdadm software raid is if you
must dual boot with Windows. If you don't do that, then mdadm is much
better supported and feature complete.

For what it's worth, you can choose to install grub to the /dev/mapper
device and it works in Ubuntu. I'm not sure if we're carrying patches
that are needed off the top of my head.

Bug#717107: limited TZ choices

2013-07-16 Thread Daniel Pocock
Package: tzsetup
Version: 7.1.0 installer

I am doing a text mode expert install

I chose UK locale and US keyboard.

However, I am in .ch

The timezone menu only offers me British summer time and UTC

1 in 4 people here in .ch are foreign - most of us do not use a Swiss
locale or German keyboard though. Debian should probably be more
flexible about these hybrid locale/keyboard/timezone combinations.

This isn't a valid version.

I'm pretty sure you can specify the location of your choice:
 - language = English
 - country = other/Europe/Switzerland.

The rest should follow. Closing accordingly.

No, no, no. You really really should *read* instead of *assuming* random
things.

Quoting the “Select your location” screen, first two sentences are:
| The selected location will be used to set your time zone and also for
| example to help select the system locale. Normally this should be the
| country where you live.

Mraw,
KiBi.

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all the ("boot" related) bugs mentioned here and am closing
them now as
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they were (very) old.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply or just file a new one -
thats often better, as the bug log will be more clear.

cheers,
Holger

Package: installation-reports
Version: 2.38
Severity: normal

So I thought for sure this would work:

PXE boot the installation system

http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/images/daily/netboot/netboot.tar.gz

Do the install, and configure the two 18GB SCSI disks as follows:

/dev/md0 raid1 swap
/dev/md1 raid0 xfs /

Each raid volume is made up of two partitions, and those two volumes
are the only ones on the system.

Installation completed, however on stable/lenny, I get an error trying
to install grub to the MBR of the first disk. It worked (or appeared to
work) on this latest testing version. Anyway, it cannot boot that way,
which I sort of figured, so I intended to PXE boot the kernel and initrd
all along. I set that up, but it fails to mount the root filesystem.

Problem 1: It fails to load the sd-mod module, so there are no SCSI
disks,

so of course it can't initialize the raid subsystem and mount /.

Problem 2: On testing/squeeze, even if I load sd-mod by hand, and then
try to re-run scripts/local-top/mdadm, I get a bunch of errors saying
there is no raid signature on sda or sdb. Bizarre. You're stuck at
that point, there's nothing you can do.

I was able to hack the initramfs on lenny and get the netbooting to
work.

Just adding the sd-mod to the modules file didn't get it done, so I
grossly hacked scripts/local-top/mdadm in the initramsfs to load sd-
mod and

then wait for 15 seconds. That seemed to do the trick, although it
still doesn't find the root filesystem right away, it goes asleep for
10-15 seconds, then finds it and proceeds.

I built the initramfs with the following command on the system using
rescue-mode:

mkinitramfs -r /dev/md1 -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.26-2-686-netboot
2.6.26-2-686

I was able to hack my way around the problem in lenny. I'm wondering

to fix this in squeeze, where I get the 'no raid signature on

stuff.

Comments/Problems:
I want to install the amd64 kfreebsd version of Squeeze. Right after the
computer says "Boot from CD/DVD:" I come to the grub prompt and it says:
"Minimal BASH-Like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists
possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
completions of a device/filename"
A list of commands is available, for example normal, boot, help, kfreebsd.
I've tried these, but it just says "error: no kernel loaded.". I just can't
get to the install menu, or whatever it's called.
It's just the kfreebsd versions that give this problem (I've tried i386
kfreebsd too). The linux version works.

Package: Installer

Problem: Will not boot after installation

System: ~2000 vintage HP Vecta XU, 6/200, system D4365N, dual Pentium II
processors, 64 MB RAM, three hard drives - 200G IDE, two 1.3 G SCSI (Quantum
Fireball), network card, no USB

The most common outcome of an installation session is that the bootup step at
the end of the session results in the letters "GRUB" appearing in the upper
left corner of the screen with the blinking cursor to the right of the "B", and
nothing else. The system does not respond to any keystrokes, or combination of
CTRL-, ALT-, etc. It seems like the system is waiting for keyboard
input, but the keyboard is not enabled. If I had a responsive keyboard AND I
knew what to type, this could be an acceptable outcome, since it does occur
most times.

What I've tried: All combinations of discs (all three drives plugged in, each
one separately, all combinations of two drives). The drives all appear to be
accessed but the boot ultimately fails as described above.

I've tried most combinations of answering the partitioning questions and
placement of the boot sector.

The failures are not all as stated above; it's just the most common outcome.
Other results are "GRUB" being continuously written to the screen, until I
power off.

I was able to get the boot to succeed once, but that particular system build
led to other problems causing me to attempt a second install. This one time the
result was that the system would, after powering on and all the verbiage of the
boot up process, presents me with a login prompt, accepts my login and allows
me to use the system. I was able to run with this system for a couple of weeks,
loading packages, etc. until I filled the discs and had to start over. The
disc full issue occurred because the IDE drive (most of the system's capacity)
was not mounted. I did not realize this until the disc full failure.

The version of Debian is 2.4. I have a 15 CD set, purchased in roughly 2004.
Last week I downloaded disc image 1 of Debian 6.0 in hopes that the boot
problem has been fixed, but the results are the same.

  Thanks,

  Mike Tremblay

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all the ("boot" related) bugs mentioned here and am closing
them now as
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they were (very) old.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply or just file a new one -
thats often better, as the bug log will be more clear.

cheers,
Holger

Comments/Problems:
Configure network:
- recognition of Ethernet and WLAN card is correct. LAN card would
need non-free firmware (not offered since not found on net - not
invested much time in that).
- WLAN installed, WEP authentication passed, IP assigned, setup of LAN
via DHCP failed! (in another try WLAN was configured manually, but it
didn't work either).

Clock/timezone setup:
- fails because of missing network connection, manual setup not offered (?)

Overall install:
- touchpad works only in first few screens (had to try how many actually)
- after installation is finished and system reboots, grub is started,
OS selected, boot process starts, after /dev filesystem is populated,
screen gets corrupted (no matter whether desktop packages are selected
during the installation or not) and system hangs. System is
unresponsive to any key.

 .
   [ Cyril Brulebois ]
   * Specify three arguments for all AC_DEFINE{,_UNQUOTED} calls, since
autoheader doesn't like having only 1 or 2 arguments there. Use
“[1]” as the second argument when there was only one, since that's
the default when it's not specified.
   * Run autoreconf as build time:
 - Add dh-autoreconf as a build-dep.
 - Call dh_autoreconf before dh_auto_configure through an extra
configure target and dependencies from */config.status.
 - Call dh_autoreconf_clean in the clean target.
   * Remove the following files from git accordingly:
 - aclocal.m4
 - configure
 - src/config.h.in
   * Wrap Build-Depends and Uploaders fields.
   * Add myself to Uploaders.
 .
   [ Colin Watson ]
   * Ignore some automake-related configure options, silencing warnings from
 dh_auto_configure.
 .
   [ Christian Perrier ]
   * Fix spelling error in a former changelog entry in "Explicitly".
This will save us from a lintian warning.
   * Update Standards to 3.9.4 (checked)
 .
   [ Dmitrijs Ledkovs ]
   * Set Vcs-* to canonical format.
   * Simply use (>= 9) version specifier for debhelper.
 .
   [ Regis Boudin ]
   * Link with -Wl,--as-needed, avoiding many indirect dependencies from GTK.
   * Explicitly link the passthrough module with libdebian-installer.
   * Use @DI_LIBS@ instead of -ldebian-installer in Makefile.in.
   * Check that the return of getenv() is not NULL before trying to use the
result. Thanks to the Mayhem Team for running their tests.
   * Let dpkg-preconfigure only run as root, just like dpkg-reconfigure.
   * Rework database saving to store the old versions.
   * Fix a typo to correctly recognise password options.
