Thanks for your detailed report which I split in two as there are
obviously two involved issues

Do you have logs for this?

It's kinda weird that nobody went on this but your analysis seems
correct.

d-i manual: languages which did not receive any updates in the last
2 weeks are: ca, nl, pt_BR, fi, hu, ko, nn, ro, tl, zh_TW

Ok to sent them a reminder?

Sure, go ahead.

IMHO, some of these are dead: hu, nn, tl

Some will probably need a new person to jump in: nl (I guess the last
work made on it was by Frans), fi, zh_TW

The remaining (ca, pt_BR, ko) will need great motivation from the
existing translator.

Among those, I suspect that some have very low stats, is that true?

Ok, will do.

Correct.

Correct, but that's most probably not the right time for that, now
(we got new translators for danish and (hopefully) romanian though).

Yes, of course.
I sent update calls to all languages in svn, no matter if they are activated
or not.

Reminder: Please update d-i manual translations for Wheezy

2012-08-05 Thread Holger Wansing
Hello all,

[Sorry for cross list posting]

--- Reminder to update translations for d-i manual ---

in preparation of the Wheezy release it would be fine, if you could
take some time and update the d-i manual translation for your language.

Since we already released debian-installer alpha1 and beta1, this is most
likely the very last chance to get an up-to-date translation on the CDs for
Wheezy.

If you have questions, ask on debian-boot@lists.debian.org.

Thanks a lot

In behalf of the debian-installer team

Holger

Package: grub-common

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

I installed Debian from the following iso on an UEFI Thinkpad T430:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/daily-builds/sid_d-i/20120805-1/amd64/iso-cd/
(I know that it's an inofficial image, but I did not have the time to
check with the official media.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I ran the installer from a USB stick.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

The GRUM install part throws an error tahat it could not be installed in
the MBR. The error console (F4) told me that there was a syntax error in
/usr/bin/grub-installer at line 45.
Looking at that file indeed showed a missing "then" in an "if"
statement. Adding that "then" and just rerunning the GRUB step of the
installer worked for me.

Regards

Bug#683928: Please include http.debian.net as Type: GeoDNS (?) in Mirrors.masterlist

2012-08-05 Thread Didier Raboud
Package: mirrors
Severity: normal
Tags: d-i

Hi dear Debian Mirrors Team,

I would like you to consider including http.debian.net as "GeoDNS"
mirror in Mirrors.masterlist. This would allow getting http.debian.net
selected as default mirror in debian-installer (choose-mirror).

The entry would probably be:

  Site: http.debian.net
  Type: GeoDNS
  Archive-architecture: amd64 armel armhf hurd-i386 i386 ia64 kfreebsd-amd64
kfreebsd-i386 mips mipsel powerpc s390 s390x sparc
  Airchive-http: /debian/
  Backports-http: /debian-backports/
  Old-http: /debian-archive/
  Archive-upstream: ftp-master.debian.org
  IPv6: yes
  Maintainer: Raphael Geissert
Comment: HTTP redirector that uses the geo and network location of the
user and the mirrors, the architecture of the requested files, IP
address family, the availability and freshness of the mirrors, and a
   few other things. Details: http://http.debian.net

The list of open questions is at least:

a) Type: GeoDNS - Does it really make sense ?
b) Impact of this change on choose-mirror ? Does it really make
   http.debian.net appear first ?
c) Impact of this change on http.debian.net ? (risk of creating HTTP
   redirection loops ?)
d) Consensus (within the mirrors team, within -boot) that http.d.n is
   superior to cdn.d.n ?
e) status of the integration of http.d.n to http.d.o ?

Thanks for considering, cheers,

OdyX

Beta1 multi-arch freezes

2012-08-05 Thread Paul van der Vlis
Hello,

I've tried the multi-arch beta1 from today. It boots fine, but it hangs
on the "select a language" question.

I've tried the 32-bits and 64-bit text install, and the 32-bits and
64-bits graphical install. I've also tried the 64-bits rescue mode.

In graphical mode even the mouse hangs.

My testPC is an Asus V6-P8H61ELX (Intel) and I used an USB DVD player.
If you like to know more, please e-mail me.

With regards,
Paul van der Vlis.

Hmm. I just booted (in kvm) a hand-built netboot-gtk on amd64 and I experience
the same problem: the installer hangs as soon as the graphical interface is
displayed.

The text netboot goes on fine.

kvm amd64 guest on amd64 host here.

I wonder what has changed since -beta1 in that domain; kernel, X ?

Cheers,

When I try it with kvm, I see the same as you do.

I've tried both 32-bit and 64-bit, graphical and text-based. Text based
works fine, graphical freezes,

On the Asus machine this was different.
There the text-based version did freeze too.

Ok, thanks. The kernel postinst says:

  # If we are installing (not upgrading) a package for a newer
  # upstream version than that of the running kernel, check whether
  # the user might be missing necessary firmware, perhaps because
  # it has now been removed from the kernel.

Perhaps this logic doesn't kick in because the kernel being installed
is the same version as the kernel in the installer environment. In
any event, it would be nice for the d-i code to do something special
so the user is not just warned but a fallback automatically applied.

Reassigning to base-installer.

Thanks,
Jonathan

The original purpose of the warning was to let users know about the
removal of firmware that was previously embedded in drivers, which might
require them to explicitly install a firmware package (since we must not
use Recommends to install non-free packages automatically).

The warning is deliberately suppressed in case of:
1. A fresh installation. The user is assumed to have made a conscious
choice whether to install non-free firmware.
2. An upgrade which doesn't increase the upstream version, which
normally won't change the requested firmware files. Again, the user is
assumed to have made the choice after upgrading to this upstream
version.

Maybe the linux-image packages should also warn in case 1, probably
using a different message.

Another example of the problem here: http://lwn.net/Articles/506543/

Ben.

Bug#661379: debian-installer: Keyboard connected via Logitech Unifying sender/receiver stops working during installation

2012-08-05 Thread Matt Horan
I am seeing this behavior as well, and it makes installing Debian with
my wireless keyboard and mouse impossible.

The keyboard and mouse work fine when the system is up and running under
wheezy. However, I wanted to reinstall wheezy, but cannot because the
keyboard and mouse do not work in the installer.

When the system is up and running, I see that the hid_logitech_dj module
is loaded. Not sure if this is possibly missing from the installer.

In some way, I think this sequence of events is not really supported
in partman-auto-lvm.

It's likely that you first need to have partman-auto-lvm do its stuff
then write the partitions to disk..then do the other changes you
want to do.

But, indeed, the level of attention that partman-* gets nowadays also
allows for bugs to be there:-)

pkgsel: please clarify intention of "|| aptfailed"

2012-08-05 Thread Daniel Hartwig
Hello d-i team

[alt. subject: system state after successful run of pkgsel is indeterminate]

Within pkgsel postinst there are a couple uses of aptitude, and one of
tasksel. The invocations are:

1. apply security updates

 in-target sh -c "debconf-apt-progress --from 50 --to 100 --logstderr
-- aptitude -q --without-recommends -y -o
DPkg::options=--force-confnew '$upgrade_type'" || aptfailed

2. select and install tasks

 in-target sh -c "tasksel --new-install --debconf-apt-progress='--from
$tasksel_start --to $tasksel_end --logstderr'" || aptfailed

3. install packages requested in pkgsel/include

 in-target sh -c "debconf-apt-progress --from 900 --to 950 --logstderr
-- aptitude -q -y install -- $RET" || aptfailed

Note that all three include "|| aptfailed".

With tasksel recently switching to apt-get, call 2 will exit with
non-zero status if there are download or (maybe?) installation errors.
(Unless APT::Get::Fix-Missing is being configured somewhere I haven't
noticed.)

Aptitude 0.6.8 (in testing) does not behave like that. In the event
of those errors it will proceed like apt-get --fix-missing and never
exit with non-zero status. This makes calls 1 and 3 have different
semantics to call 2: they will succeed despite failure to apply
security updates and/or packages requested to be installed.

Please clarify whether the use of "|| aptfailed" after each call is
intended for catching package download/installation errors (in
addition to other errors, of course). This would mean that a
successful run of pkgsel *should* assert that updates have been
applied, selected tasks installed, and packages in pkgsel/include
installed. At the moment, the state of the system after pkgsel is
indeterminate.

These semantics could be enforced by replacing use of aptitude with
equivalent calls to apt-get, or updating aptitude to 0.6.9 series (in
experimental) which can report the errors similar to apt-get. IMO
apt-get is preferable because it is simpler and would ensure the most
consistency possible within pkgsel. However, there may be users who
rely on the current implicit support of aptitude-only search patterns
in pkgsel/include.

Ok, there is the current release process to be considered. Can the
intentions of pkgsel can be stated/determined independently, with the
implications of release process considered later?

Regards

I have no specific advice about this but if that's the plan, pretty
please put me into the loop (as I guess this will be done through
debconf) so that I can coordinate a translation update round.

The choice of modules in the D-I kernel is shorter (for size issues)
so it's very likely that adding this module could help.

I see this in debian/installer/modules/input-modules:
hid
usbhid
hid-apple ?
hid-belkin ?
hid-microsoft ?
hid-logitech ?
hid-monterey ?
hid-sunplus ?
hid-cherry ?
synaptics_usb ?
wistron_btns ?

Dunno what the "?" means but anyway, I see no hid-logitech-dj here...

I suspect it was named hid-logitech and got renamed to
hid-logitech-dj

Kernel team?

I wonder whether these calls to aptitude aren't just something forgotten

I thik this is what should be done, despite this (minor)
inconvenience. We (IIRC) never documented that aptitude search
patterns are supported in pkgsel/include.

Help in doing this is likely to be appreciated..:-)
