Comments/Problems:

- I chose expert install. What's the difference with the normal install?
I didn't really detect anything that was particularly "expert"...

- After saying "no" to "do pc card services need to be started", I found it
  unexpected that I was asked for memory ranges to exclude for PCMCIA;
I would have thought that the first question would mean I didn't need
  anything with PCMCIA.

- It was impossible to setup the disk layout I wanted:
  - root on raid1 over 2 partitions
  - ditto swap and /boot
  - /var and other things on LVM on RAID1
I first setup the partitions as raid devices and chose "write to disk", and
it complained about no root being assigned. I ended up first making one of
the partitions not for raid but for root, and then after that went back and
made root on an MD device. I could have sworn when I did something
similar in March that it was no problem...
Also, when setting usage of one of the raid devices to "LVM", that didn't
get saved somehow, re-entering the partitioning showed "unused". Also the
swap device (also on raid1) was shown as "swap", but when entering the
config for that device it also said "not used". In short, most of the
configuration entered was not remembered when "writing to disk".
I made a couple of screenshots with my phone if you're interested.
I ended up doing alt-f2 and setting things up by hand with mdadm and
  pvcreate et.al.

- The question "should root be allowed to login" should indicate that this
includes the console; I was thinking of ssh access. BTW, I think that
offering to install an ssh server should also be asked, I expect that to
always be there... which is a pain if you install the server somewhere
  and can't access it remotely.

- After selecting the tasks I was hoping to be dumped into aptitude to
fine-tune the packages; that didn't happen. Did I miss the choice for
aptitude somewhere? I did choose "expert install", so I expect to be
  offered a bit more control...

- I didn't get any chance to enter anything for the mail config, hence this
is going out as from "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" while it should be just
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" for this system. I need to fix /etc/mailname...
So please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] :-)

- After installation cron in the log that /etc/environment doesn't exist,
  which it doesn't.

- The rescue boot also asks for hostname, domainname, country, etc.,
so I was a bit worried that I was simply doing an install again.
Why is that info necessary for a rescue console?

So is either of these okay?

more upx problems

2008-07-25 Thread Joey Hess
The hd-media image no longer boots on my main test box (HP thin client).
Immediate reboot after syslinux finishes loading the initrd and kernel.
Netboot still works ok.

I turned off upx, and that fixed the issue. And yeah, we're upxing this
image too, it's built by the same code path that builds the floppy.

I'm going to disable upx. We don't need it for the hd-media image
anyway.

(I had earlier this week seen a hd-media image fail to boot on a
HP^WLenovo laptop. I am not sure that was the same problem tho.)

Comments/Problems:

The installer couldn't mount its own partition - it seem that mount/the kernel
now by default tries to use iocharset=utf8 by default, but this charset isn't
available in the installer.
By changing iso-scan postinst to pass -o iocharset=iso8859-1 to the mount
command, it was able to succeed.

I guess it is related to the kernel changes recently described on devel:

Thanks for the hints, but that didn't help. I can see the boot menu, but after
choosing a simple install it then get stuck on "booting kernel". More verbose
output didn't help me sort out the issue, as well as fiddling with various
qemu flags.

Good point, I didn't thought of LVM+crypto. I plan to do the same tests than I
did back in february for my first patch, which include testing all base
recipes, plus some tests designed specially to test the good behavior of the
new features (with a device not declared in the recipe, with a device
missing, and so on). Everything was OK last time, and I have good hope it's
still the case.

Cheers,
Grégory

Bug#486298: Megaraid works, but it looks like it's because of a kernel change

2008-07-25 Thread Daniel Dickinson

Hi Frans,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner; my internet has been down
for a while and won't be back until at least Wednesday. I tested the
second image you posted and I had an install with no problems, however
when I did wait=10 it also worked, and when I checked the syslog there
were no megaraid waiting messages so I suspect the .25 kernel fixed
that bug. This is also consistent with the fact that when entering
the partition menu the system pauses for a significant amount of time,
which I suspect is due to the driver initialization happening behind
the scenes.

I can't check a regular install image to see if I'm right until my
internet is back up. I appreciate the effort you put in especially
since you'll probably be frustrated that it (probably) wasn't needed.

Regards,

Daniel

Comments/Problems:

First tried to boot from USB key, but the boot failed. Moved the iso to
a CD, booted ok.

The wifi is iwl4965, and something didn't quite work in the firmware
loading code. I had the firmware on the USB stick, attached, but was not
prompted for it until after netcfg had run. (So the hw-detect run in
disk-detect). I told it to install firmware, but did not see anything in
/lib/firmware afterwards. Did see some codepage errors in the syslog. No
error message displayed to me. Installed via ethernet.

Installation went ok. We were missing gthumb in the desktop task, which
is there in tasksel git, but has not yet been added to the tasks
overrides. We also missed ntpd, which d-i still doesn't install by
default.

All hardware worked. Suspend and resume worked immediatly (!). The wifi
takes a long time, or has difficulty associating with an AP; setting the
essid manually works around this, and the problem may be intermittent.
THe power button does not seem to generate acpi events; pressing it in
gnome does nothing.

Comments/Problems:

Aside from two minor issues having to do with the PERC/3 / Megraraid
(megaraid_mbox driver) controller the install went flawlessly. The
first issue is known and doesn't likely have a solution, and that is the
fact that the megaraid can take up to 300 seconds before is actually
loaded resulting in loading the megaraid_mbox driver appearing to
have failed during disk detection.

The second issue is that the megaraid_mbox driver requires rootdelay=10
as a boot parameter, at least until the kernel driver is fixed (known
kernel issue).

unblocking partman-multipath

2008-07-25 Thread Guido Günther
Hi,
please unblock partman-multipath. There's no version in lenny yet. This
way folks building custom installers (due to #440675) can pull from
lenny instead of sid.
Cheers,
 -- Guido
