Thank you for your feedback.
It is also good to see that you use a mirror site.

Could you tell which build date the ISO has?
You find that in the file /etc/lsb-release or in help screens before
boot.

Bug#380351: hardcodes paths to grub-install and update-grub, rending them "unmovable"

2006-07-29 Thread Robert Millan
Package: grub-installer
Severity: grave
Tags: patch

Using absolute paths can have horrid consequences as you've seen in #361929.
Now grub commands are "trapped" into violating FHS and being unable to move at
the same time.

Please find attached patch to switch to relative paths when invoking
grub-install or update-grub.

Note: The patch assumes that PATH env variable is properly set during execution
of these scripts. If that's not the case, you'll have to export it explicitly,
either in grub-installer or whereever you find appropiate.

As for /etc/kernel-img.conf generation, it cannot yet be done using relative
paths, but I expect that we'll be able to fix this automaticaly from
kernel-package (see #380338).

Not very happy with new directfb upload

2006-07-29 Thread Frans Pop
Hi Guillem,

I do not want to blame you or anything, but I do need your help to get
things sorted out.

You uploaded a new upstream version of directfb a few days ago (or rather,
it was accepted a few days ago), and I'm afraid that looks likely to
completely mess up the Beta 3 release plans for the installer.

Reason is that libcairo still depends on -24 and thus d-i builds currently
fail as that version is no longer available.
Also, this means that the new directfb has to migrate to testing before we
can release d-i, which in turn means that all packages that depend on
directfb have to be able to migrate.

Did you already contact the maintainers of packages that depend on
directfb?
Who is managing the transition?
When do you think everything could be ready to migrate to testing?

Cheers,
FJP

The alternative is to release Beta 3 without g-i. IMO that is a realistic
option as we really do not want to delay the release any further.

Could you describe at which point the loop-AES method showed problems
and how they showed themselves?

The actual patch is removing a blank line.

In a previous message to this BR is announced that a next stable point
release with upload the fixed package, but I don't dare to tag

Where all mirrors tried at the same day?
Could you retry today?

I'm asking because suspect the file was missing on the mirror(s)
and I asume that the mirrors are okay now.

Be aware that the boot image on the USB stick meanwhile is be outdated.

So please retry and report back.

When trying to install Debian AMD64 testing (Etch) using the official netinst
iso,
the installation process always dies at the "Installing Base System" step
saying:

   Failed getting Release file file:///cdrom/dists/sarge/Release

So is impossible to install the system.

My apology for the late response

An older version of the debian-installer/today wiki page.
had this text:

[18 Jun 06] amd64 CD images turn out to have been broken for a while
due to a mirroring issue on the CD image build machine.

And meanwhile is it fixed. Please try a new version of debian-installer.

Because I think the problem is fixed, I'm closing this install report.

Thank you for your feedback.

Bug#379120: lspci present on i386, verify on powerpc

2006-07-29 Thread Geert Stappers

On a i386 is lspci present in the recent builds op debian-installer.

While the installer waits for a keyboard selection,
I switched to the second console and typed `lspci`
and got the output of lspci.

Could this be verified on a powerpc computer?
(no need to do a re-installed ( no computer harm ))

The Reply-To: is allready set to the bugreport.

Thank you

Is there any reason that the new directfb really needs to be in testing?
It's included in the g-i udebs, as long as they're internally consistent
it can get to testing later.

Bug#380082: marked as done (shouldn't always use snd-powermac)

Dennis de Vaal reports that on an iMac G5
"The snd-powermac module causes the system to completey lockup/freeze."

Also, snd-powermac is being deprecated for anything that has a
i2s-X/sound/layout-id. The iMac G5 should have that, and that means
snd-aoa will automatically load.

snd-aoa will only be included in 2.6.18, but is capable of automatically
loading without /etc/modules interaction.

The right fix here is tough. If we could rely on 2.6.18, then it'd be
trivial to check if there's a layout-id property below the sound node
and if so not use snd-powermac (snd-aoa will come up automatically).

But since we can't do that, it's hard. snd-powermac causes system hangs
on that iMac G5, a bug that is implicitly fixed by making snd-powermac
refuse loading on such machines in 2.6.18 (since snd-aoa handles it I
patched snd-powermac to not initialise there anyway).

Bug#380416: lilo fails to install when using XFS root partition on AMD64

2006-07-29 Thread Alex Chekholko

Package: lilo-installer
Version: 1.16

I'm using the latest daily build of the AMD64 netinst CD. I have a
single SATA drive, and I selected "use entire drive" in the
partitioner and it created one large root partition and one swap
partition. Then I changed the root partition to XFS. There was a
warning about XFS + grub and the lilo installer ran instead of the
grub one.

The LILO installer asks for the installation target and gives three choices:
1) /dev/hdc: Master Boot Record
2) /dev/sda1: new Debian partition
3) Other (advanced)

/dev/hdc is my CDROM, /dev/sda is my SATA HD, so I chose option 2. It
asks if I would like to make the partition active and warns that
otherwise I won't be able to boot. I say yes and there's an error
message: "An installation step failed. You can try to run the
failing..." etc. In any case, the "Install the LILO boot loader on a
hard disk" step fails.

Ctrl-Alt-F4, tells me:
grub-installer: /boot on xfs, unsafe to install grub
grub-installer: /boot on xfs, unsafe to install grub

main-menu: WARNING **: Configuring 'lilo-installer' failed with error code 1

I went back to the main menu, enabled the web server that shows the
logs, noticed that the partman log says that my HD is
/dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/disc, so I went back to the LILO
menu and tried that in the Other option, but the result was the same:
