Bug#282141: pivot_root: 2.6 panics, 2.4 boots

|
| I read this at
| http://wiki.debian.net/index.cgi?DebianInstallerBrokenThings:
|
| "linux26 after boot ( pivot_root No such file or dir. /sbin/init: 426
| cannot open dev/console : no such file) Kernel panic.! (3ware sata-raid)
| [Note: you can fix this by chroot into /target, edit
| /etc/mkinitrd/modules and add 3w_9xxx, and re-run mkinitrd]"
|
| So... I got an CCISS SCSI System and it seems to have the same problem,
| but only using an 2.6 kernel. But the solution mentioned is to add
| modules to initrd. The output from the 2.6 bootup shows that the CCISS
| driver is being loaded, the partitions can be found, but nevertheless
| there is some error I don't understand. So I don't know what to do or
| where to start.
|
There might be several reasons why the root device
could not be mounted:
- - cciss driver not loaded (or broken)
- - filesystem driver not loaded
- - raid not correctly initialized
- - changed device sequence
- - ???
I would suggest to apt-get busybox-cvs, set BUSYBOX=yes
and DELAY=10 in /etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf, rebuild the
initrd image for 2.6, and reboot.
At boot time press [Enter] when asked for and check which
modules have been loaded. Next try to mount your root
filesystem read-only to /mnt. There should be some message.
AFAIK the cciss driver is under development. Maybe you
should consider to try the current 2.6.10-rc2?

I didn't look at this in detail, but I guess this is #272139 which is
fixed in SVN. I'll probably make an upload soon if Jeff doesn't do
so.

application tag in d-i manual

2004-11-20 Thread Holger Wansing
Hello,

in the subdirectories install-methods, post-install and
preparing the tag is used, but it seems that
it is not configured for special formatting (bold or another
font or ...).

Example: at

http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.powerpc/ch04s04.html#files-oldworld

»miBoot« in the first line is formatted with the tag.

Maybe we should change this?

Greetings
Holger

Comments/Problems:
This was my first installation with the Debian installer and as I didn't know
that you could use directly a 2.6 kernel, I first booted with ENTER (= linux)
and I got a problem: while the boot process went well and the language choice
appeared, the keyboard didn't work. Plugging an Apple USB keyboard (stolen from
an eMac ;-) ) solved the problem, I mean, the USB keyboard worked, while the
internal one didn't. This problem is present even in the 20041115 netinst .iso
and in the latest 20041119 (I just downloaded and tried it).

After having read the boot help, I booted with 'linux26' and the keyboard
problem disappeared (I mean, I had no problem with the internal keyboard). So,
it seems it's a 2.4 only probl

I'm not sure, but it should be not a part of the Debian-installer
itself, but after the first reboot, when you have installed the base
system, then the installation process continues asking you about
root/user accounts and all the other stuffs. One question is how you
want to install (better, upgrade?) the other packages: via HTTP, FTP,
CD-Rom...

Next week I should install Debian on another machine (an IBM ThinkPad
T42p laptop), so if I wasn't clear I can check where it is.

As I wrote on my installation report, I know that I can choose manual
selection, but this is not user-friendly. Just IMHO, I mean, it could be
an improvement, but not necessary.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

PS, you can close this bug when you want, the installation itself didn't
have any problem ;-)

If it is important for you, then rephrase it in something like:

The new Debian-Installer and it's manual covers mostly CD ROM install
or installs with networking other then PPP.

 Could this

PPP users should do foo and can ignore bar

be added to paragraph x.y of the d-i manual?

Here is the information. I finally made my way to installing the server
using the hack described in Bug#279936 with the 20040930 Debian Installer.
Unfortunately, this only allowed me to install using 2.4 kernel.

In base-config (apt-setup). Anyway, "CD-Rom" is *always* translated to
"cédérom" as this is the official translation of this acronym in

Okay. Please confirm that the module to modprobe is 'megaraid2'

If the string is talking about the /cdrom/ mount point, as the bug
reporter said it was it should not be translated. I cannot find such a
string in base-config though.

As this report only contains that problem mentioned, I reassign the
