Bug#279936: [i386][20041104][netinst] partial success: Dell PowerEdge 1850

2004-11-16 Thread Vincent McIntyre

I tested this hardware again, with i386 netinst 20041110.

Now the megaraid2 module is loaded correctly, yay.
The partitioner starts normally, detecting a 73GB RAID-0 partition.

Hence, I'm closing this report.
Thanks all

Re:%20Bug#279681: serious problem with "Host Protected Area"

2004-11-16 Thread teknotik
I have a very similar problem on my Gericom EGO laptop. After getting the Grub
error reported, I tried to overwrite GRUB with LILO. LILO just puts 'L' on the
screen before freezing.

Can anyone advise/assist me with this problem? At the moment, my laptop is
unusable, and I can't see a way of fixing it :(

Thanks, Herbert, it is working now. Well, sort of. ;-) I downloaded
joeyh's files and tried to install Sarge in two scenarios:
a) Using a regional mirror: the installation process loads files
(and kernel modules for hardware support, I guess), recognizes the
hard disk and allows partitioning.
b) Using Apache to serve .
I copied Sarge CD 1 to this local directory. The installation
process loads some files, but does not find a hard disk.
Obviously, there is a difference between either the files available
in these two scenarios or between the process of loading the files.
Maybe joeyh's files require "real" Debian mirrors, not just local
copies of the installation CDs. BTW, I verified the CD by installing
the laptop using the DVD ROM drive, no problems there. For better
performance, I'd like to use the Sarge CDs I have already created,
instead of downloading everything from external mirrors.

I used the files in the debian-installer/2.6 subdirectory, because I

That's up to you to decide ;-)

In any case, we can always use extra translators. If you are fluent in
Afrikaans, and have some available time to offer on a fully-voluntary
basis, you can just go ahead and translate. The only thing you will need
to know is the ISO code for afrikaans, which is af; so any .po files you
create will have to be called 'af.po'.

preseed file no tasks

2004-11-16 Thread underdog10
Hello,

When read the installation manual about Automatic Installation, you can see in
the Preconfiguration File Example those lines.

" You can choose to install any combination of tasks that are available.
Available tasks as of this writing include: Desktop environment, Web server,
Print server, DNS server, File server, Mail server, SQL database, manual
package selection. The last of those will run aptitude. You can also choose to
install no tasks, and force the installation of a set of packages in some other
way."

I could not find a way to install no tasks.
Can anyone tell me how i can do it.
I don't want aptitude to be launch.

Thanks.

i managed to install sarge on the system and i could do a more fine grained
research.

i can now boot fine the machine with kernel-image-2.6.8-power3-smp version
2.6.8-6. if i use kernel-image-2.6.8-power3 version 2.6.8-6 i get problem
with the symbios controller. i attached the full log of the UP kernel and a
piece of the log of the working SMP kernel.

this happens with both kernels and it is apparently unrelated.

Bug#281530: [s390] Installation successful, some issues

2004-11-16 Thread Frans Pop
Package: installation-reports

I saw an offer for an s390 on ebay, bought it and set it up in my
hobby room. Uhm, scratch that.
I downloaded hercules 3.01 [1], compiled and installed it without any
problems on my Toshiba i386 laptop, and had a beautiful s390 emulator
(lots of kudos to the developers!).

[1] I got the upstream version as the current version in Debian does
not run on 2.6 kernels (#241064)

As I don't know anything about s390, I did a really basic setup and install.
Main goal was to test some changes in network-console and prebaseconfig
related to remote installation over SSH (#279090 and #279213).

Comments/Problems:
1) Locale not set up properly
It looks like languagechooser, countrychooser and kbd-chooser are not
run at all (as they are not included in the initrd).
It also looks like no proper defaults for language, country and locale are
set. This causes several problems:
- /etc/environment is set up with LANG="" and LANGUAGE=""
It would be better if LANG was set to "C" and LANGUAGE maybe not set at all.
/etc/environment seems to be created in languagechooser's prebaseconfig.
(/me files a separate bugreport against languagechooser)
- The countrylist for mirror-chooser is shown as country codes and not
  country names.

I'm not sure what the best place to set general defaults would be.

2) languagechooser does not handles LANG="" correctly
During package installation in tasksel, locales was installed.
During the preconfig of locales, the top of the list of locales to choose from
showed: [*] Usage: /usr/sbin/validlocale
It appears this line was added to /etc/localegen by languagechooser's
prebaseconfig, by calling 'validlocale $LANG' instead of 'validlocale "$LANG"'.
(Note that I understand that an empty LANG should be treated the same as
LANG="C".)

(/me files a separate bugreport against languagechooser for this issue)

3) Selected unstable in 1st stage, but testing was selected in 2nd stage
During apt-config I selected http and the same mirror as in 1st stage.
After that tasksel broke down because of dependency problems. Investigation
showed that a source line for testing had been added in /etc/apt/sources.list.
Not sure where this problem comes from.

4) network-console: SSH session aborts when changing window size on client
Separate bug report filed. See #281435.

All in all the installation was successful (and a lot of fun).

apt-get,d-i and small hard disks

2004-11-16 Thread sferriol
hello
i have a problem using apt under small disk, on a PC under debian and
another during debian installation (pre-rc2).
On the first PC, i do a 'apt-get upgrade' but there is no place to
download packages and after configure them. i finally succeed by
selecting package one by one 'apt-get install package; apt-get clean'
why apt-get can not do that automatically when there is no enough free
disk space ?

It's the same under debian installer, it do not verify if there is
enough space on disk before installing packages, i succeed to install
by executing 'apt-get clean; apt-get upgrade' in a shell

thanks

This is fairly recent hardware. Control for some new ICH controllers has
been added recently, but I'm not sure if your controller is among that.

Please try the netinst CD image from [1].
If that does not work, then file an installation report [2] and make sure
that you add the output of 'lspci' and 'lspci -n'.

You could try using knoppix to get the lspci information.

Bug#281538: languagechooser: [s390] Invalid setup of localization

2004-11-16 Thread Frans Pop
Package: languagechooser
Version: 1.42

During an s390 installation (see #281530), languagechooser and
countrychooser are not run as they are not on the initrd.
However, they are loaded later in the process and languagechooser's
prebaseconfig _is_ run at the end of 1st stage installation.

This probably means that some debconf values and environment variables
which languagechooser expects to be set, are not set.
The prebaseconfig does not handle this situation correctly.

The syslog for the install showed:
info: Running /usr/lib/prebaseconfig.d/05languagechooser
warning: /usr/lib/prebaseconfig.d/05languagechooser returned error code 1

First problem
=
/etc/environment is set up with LANG="" and LANGUAGE=""

IMHO it would be better if LANG was set to "C" and LANGUAGE maybe not set
at all.

Second problem
==
/etc/localegen is set up with 'Usage: /usr/sbin/validlocale '

During package installation in tasksel, locales was installed.
During the preconfig of locales, the top of the list of locales to choose
from showed: [*] Usage: /usr/sbin/validlocale

It appears this line was added to /etc/localegen during prebaseconfig, by
calling 'validlocale $LANG' instead of 'validlocale "$LANG"' (and by not
checking the return code of validlocale).

Note that this problem would disappear if LANG were set to C.
However, a check for the return code should be added anyway.

I was not able to format dasd using d-i (known problem, should be fixed now),
so
I formated dasd manually and formated it with cfdisk. After successfull firts
stage
I rebooted hercules but I was not able to boot using zipl defaul setup. Linux
was
not able to find root partition (zipl.conf attached).
After using google.com I found that I need to pass dasd=0120 to zipl in order
to boot. That worked. It is posible that dasd parameter is missing because I
did not use d-i for formating dasd and partitioning.

I believe this is the case.
A workaround to 281407 (the formatting loop) problem exists, too, if
you don't have the fixed version: define more than one DASD device.
The loop only appears if you have exactly one disk.

Afrikaans is without any doubt an african language..:-)

Anyway, what we're currently and indeed always are seeking, are
translators for all languages we don't support yet..this includes
Klingon as well(though I suspect an Afrikaans translation to be far
more useful than a Klingon one).

So, if you're interested in participating to Debian Installer
localisation effort to Afrikaans, then you ringed the correct door.

More precisely speaking, I am, together with Dennis Stampfer
([EMAIL PROTECTED]), the one you need to speak with in order to begin
this effort.

The general documentation about d-i localisation may be found at:

http://svn.debian.org/viewcvs/*checkout*/d-i/trunk/installer/doc/i18n/i18n.html

Be aware that the currently prepared release of d-i will not include
more languages than currently supported, mostly because we need to
freeze the size of packages.

However, new languages are highly welcome and will be included in
future releases (we're still hoping that the d-i release cycle will be
faster the general Debian release cycle). These new languages are
called "prospective languages" in our internal jargon. A few languages
are currently in that list (Malagasy, Macedonian, Vietnamese) and
we could be very happy to add Afrikaans to the list.

I've been in contact with the translate-devel people where
South-African translators are very active. Maybe you got aware of this
"call for african translations" through them...or maybe through
another channel. In any case, feel free to jump in to the boat and
just keep in touch and ask any question you want to ask...

And if you're in touch with potentiel Zulu, Xhosa and the other 8
official languages in RSA, just send them here

Debian-Installer report-template

2004-11-16 Thread Christian Mack
Hi d-www folks
Debian installation reports are a good way to get user feedback for d-boot.
At the moment the user either has to use the template on his debian maschine,
or to type in the whole report by hand into his email client.
In case of an unsuccessful installation, the first choice often isn't
possible.
Because of that I thougt about providing a better debian-installer

This is currently not possible to do with preseeding. Well, not cleanly.
A choice will be added to the menu for this feature after sarge is
released.

For now, if you really have to do it:

# Remove menu item to avoid tasksel run. Note that this is dependent on
# base-config internals; base-config runs in /tmp/somedir/ and the menu
# subdirectory from there contains the menu base-config is using for the
# current run.

And what's about lilo/grub background image?. Is that an option in d-i?
Perhaps an interesting thing: if we could not have the bootsplash, we could
have lilo/grub graphical display.

Package: tasksel
Version: 2.15

Currently the cache is always deleted as soon as aptitude finishes package
installation.
This is very not nice if the installation fails for some reason (or is
cancelled by the user) as packages will have very likely have to be
downloaded again, and again, ...

I suggest that the cache only be cleaned if there were no errors during
the installation.

I believe that boils down to the grub and lilo packages providing one, and
there being a consensus on what the image should be...

I have also heard that in certain combinations of hardware, kicking into the
video mode required to display the graphic causes issues, so in the
interests of reliability, it has been left alone.

The only cache cleaning that I know of is in base-config:

if which tasksel >/dev/null 2>&1; then
if [ "$1" = new ]; then
tasksel_param="--new-install"
fi
if ! tasksel -ris $tasksel_param; then
$0 failure
exit 1
fi
fi

if [ "$KEEP_BASE_DEBS" != yes ]; then
apt-get -f clean || true
fi

I don't see how this could cause the cache to be cleaned if the tasksel
run failed.

I asssume they need a _current_ mirror. As D-I changes daily, I think
it is not a good idea to use a presumably outdated inofficial snapshot.

BTW to speed up the install and save download volume and mirror load,
I use Wwwoffle as caching proxy (Squid would be eaqally effective).
This is guaranteed to be up to date.

http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ (please advice if you
find anything else), and i thought of adding to that some packages.

Then modify the installer in a such way to install the new packages,
and answer questions as few as possible to get a system installed as
fast as possible. This, ofcourse, means having some of apt's questions
pre-answered.

Also, i need to add support for non-standard hardware (drivers not
included in the pristine kernel sources),that , i think means changing
the kernel image included in the installer.

This new installer will be very handy in situations where many
machines need to be installed having a nearly identical configuration
and package list.

Are you certain about this? I used the jigdo files found at

ftp.uni-koeln.de on 2004-11-06. It is listed as a secondary mirror

Well, which mirror would you recommend? Are the secondary mirrors
any good in this particular scenario?

Thanks, I'm using Squid as a proxy already. I wanted to make use of
the CDs I created, but if downloading fresh files from a mirror is a
requirement, I will go for it.

I chose Japanese as language.

1st stage installation with 32bit mode is really smooth.
2nd stage installation is smooth also (discover and hotplug succeed to

Unfortunatelly, when I chose 'Desktop' on tasksel, a trouble happened.
Package installation was incomplete, and error message from base-config

It was too early to dismiss aptitude install screen, I couldn't find
what's happen at first. Then I found a log in
/var/log/base-config.log.

The problem is caused by OpenOffice.org dependency problem:

Another topic:
- GeForce FX5200 won't run with XFree86 4.3.0 nv driver.
It works with nvidia-kernel-source kernel module + nvidia-glx.
- This is a matter of course, when you install 2.6.8-9-amd64 64 bit
native kernel, you should install more library for 64-bit
  environments (I had a experience... nvidia-kernel-source compile
  problem :-) ).

get Debian to install, but messed up things with the Logical Volume

would not work again. I can get NetBSD on it, but I want my apt-get
and my aptitude :)
The phys and virt address above are different from the times when I was
able to get it installed. I can not recall for the life of me
what they were, but I am 100% sure that the phys address was different.
Not so certain about the virt address.
I have gone through about 13-15 CDs of both the 'netinst' and the
'businesscard' ISO images since near the end of September when I
scrounged the Ultra 2 from a Lab at work to use as my day to day
system. It is now running NetBSD as I do need something to
run on the box so I can do my work.
What's frustrating is that CDs that worked at one point are not
working the next day !! Its not a memory issue because I am able
to get Solaris and NetBSD to both work on this system without
any problems.

First installation: partitioned using setting for beginners (everything
on one partition), booting unsuccessful (GRUB error 18); in second
attempt (mode: "expert26"), partitioned manually as mentioned above with
small boot partition /boot, booting now fine.

There are currently three NICs in the PC (2x Ethernet, 1x WLAN; didn't
know if active ISDN cards like AVM B1 are supported so didn't try it).

D-i recognizes both Ethernet NICs as "3Com 3c905B", even if one is "3Com
3c905C"; might be the same driver but is irritating. eth0 is working as
expected.

WLAN NIC Netgear WG311 (Atheros chipset) is not "installed" or handled
by d-i in any way, but lspci recognizes the PCI card. Might work with
MADwifi drivers which seem not to be part of sarge at all. Getting it to
work with Debian could take some time, most users won't know how to do
it. It is supposed to work in Fedora Core 2 and Mandrake 9.1.

Other thoughts during installation:
- The messages at several stages of the install, that some drivers are
not available at the moment, are irritating; thought first something
went wrong.
- Missed an option for a basic firewall configuration.
- d-i told me several times during installation that the computer might
support PCMCIA; kind of highly irritating because it's a desktop system
wighout any PC-Card slots. Might be caused by the Netgear WLAN card or
just a strange error.
- The partitioning tool ist quite nice; however, it should not suggest
partitionings which don't work (1024 limit).
- The setting of the timezone could be easier; it's painless, if you
have a Windows PC where you can look it up, but most users don't care
too much about their timezone relative to GMT; so maybe a simple list
("your hardware clock is... GMT time is... if you are in..." or
something like this).
- The text mode interface for d-i is fine for me, there's IMHO no need
for a graphical installer.
- d-i could offer some advice for configuring the computer for certain
tasks (router, file server, desktop workstation etc.) or at least point
to the task system. But a user which doesn't finds out quickly about it
will surely fail with Debian anyway.

Greetings, -asb

Re: To install over ich6r raid

2004-11-16 Thread Mats Näsström
When you come to the step to partition your hd I'm gessing you something
like 'no availible drives' and the screen goes red in the backgound, right?

The new ICH6 chip is very new but it is supported by the ata_piix module
through libata. So just modprobe ata_piix to enable d-i to detect your
HD. But make sure your installing in a kernel 2.6.x install cause its
the only one that has the libata and ata_piix with it.

In simple steps this is what you should do:
When booting from the install cd you enter either 'linux26' or
'expert26'. Then go through the install until you fail to detect your
hard drive and then press ALT+F2 to switch the other console and press
enter to activate it. Here you just type 'modprobe ata_piix' and it
should produce no messages and then leave you at another prompt. After
this you just switch back to d-i with ALT+F1 and redo the 'Detect
hardware' step which should be one step above the partition hard drive
step. And then you should be able to detect your hard drive during the
rest of the installation. =)

All this I wrote down from memmory so if all the terms and labels are
correct I blame my brain. Oh and by the way, I'm sorry if I seem to
treat you like a newbie by writing this detailed how-to but its not your
fault, I just felt like writing it so no offense. ;)

Cheers
- Mats

The user below suggest a minor change to the manual. However what he
describes is that pppoeconf fails when an existing eth0 interface is
not up. I tend to think this is a pppoeconf bug, do you agree?

Hi Christian

Perhaps I ticked the wrong box.

The second half of the install, which runs after the first reboot, was NOT
successful because no connection to the Internet could be established, and then
none of the APT stuff could run, because no connection could be made to a Debian
mirror.

The installation manual says, if you have PPPOE, you need to switch to VT2 and
run pppoeconf. That's when I get the message about no concentrator being found.

Last night I successfully got through this by typing:

ifconfig eth0 up

before running pppoeconf.

If this is generally required to do a successful installation over PPPOE could
it please be included in the installation manual for us inexperienced Linux
users.

Thanks
Jeremy

Given that this install report is a complete success report, I do as
usual with successful install report

 : I close the bug..:-)

This does not of course mean you weren't right to report. Knowing the
installations are correct is important for the d-i team.

Many thanks for yourtime testing the Debian Installer and reporting
your results. Have fun with your new Debian system!

PS : the pppoeconf problem is outside Debian Installer scope. I suggest
you report it separately against the pppoeconf package with as much
details as possible.

You were in expert modeyou got the information you implicitely

I'm not sure whether it should be turned into a wishlist bug against
netcfg. Anyway, this is for sure post-sarge

netcfg people, do you think something could be done?

You were in expert mode...blah blah..:-)

I guess that more details are needed here.

Well, the hundreds Windows machines I install and, unfortunately am in
duty to keep in good shape, indeed have a timezone setup which refers
to GMTAgain, the extra question you got about cmputer clock and
GMT only shows up in expertmode...which is not aimed at novice users.

Though this is widely true, there are indeed arguments for a graphical
installer anyway. Mine is opening internationalisation by adding an
easier support for some languages families.

This is tasksel extensions (new tasks probably) which will be added
post-sarge and, I'm afraid, if some manpower comes in the d-i team:-)
