What version of the installer was this, and what's the URL to the image
you booted?

Re: Automatic root password setting

Yes, I think that would work, although (playing devil's advocate, somewhat), a
hash is just a string with different semantics.

Normally, the semantics are held in the keyword and the value is some dumb
storage (boolean, string, whatever). Having different meanings for
passwd/root-passwd (== "plain-text password", "md5 hash", ...) means the
handling of passwd/root-password-again becomes somewhat convoluted.

Would this involve a lot of work?

I think both:
  passwd/root-passwd hash $1$oybxvvkS$cjtsxW4.ss1vRVpoxie1A1
and
  passwd/root-passwd-hash string $1$oybxvvkS$cjtsxW4.ss1vRVpoxie1A1
would work, but I suspect the latter to be easier to implement.

Cheers,

Paul.

I can manually type 'boot=/vmlinuz-sparc32' and it succesfully finds it and tries to
unpack it
(tho, an unrelated problem, it fails to fully unpack it, presumably bcos I wrote the
disk on i386

I have the same problem with both 2.4 and 2.6 kernel boot floppy images

xdebconfigurator menu item number in base-config

2004-10-11 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Hi,

currently xdebconfigurator base-config menu item has number 76, while
pkgselhas 80. Isthere any particular reason for running
xdebconfigurator *before* tasksel?

Running it running it *after* would make it trigger itself basing on
the user choice (with or without X).

Cheers,

Free

Nope. The number was selected for woody, and just copied to sarge.
Should we change it to another number?

Fine with me. Submit a bug request to BTS asking for the number to be
changed, and include a proposal for a new number. This should make
sure we don't forget it.

which is netcfg-dhcp default behaviour in case of failure?

2004-10-11 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Hi,

I'd like to use netcfg-dhcp but *not* netcfg-static.

I'm wondering which is the default behaviour of netcfg-dhcp in case of
failure.. Does it prompt the user for error? If so is there a way to
force it to silently go on even in case of failure? I'd like the
process to be non-interactive..

Cheers,

After some firter analysis, I've founfd that this guess is also wrong.
"File not found" message is really there in logs, but it is not because
package is really missing, but because
of /usr/lib/prebaseconfig.d/10bind-mount script, that removes bind
mount /cdrom -> /tareget/cdrom too early, making apt-install not
functional in prebaseconfig scripts. At least 65languagechooser and
70kbd-chooser prebaseconfig scripts do use apt-install. So I guess the
problem affects not only russian + netinst, but many non-nglist languages
and any cdrom installation.

change xdebconfigurator menu item number in base-config

2004-10-11 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Package: xdebconfigurator
Version: 1.10
Severity: normal

I think xdebconfigurator should be run *after* pkgsel. This way
xdebconfigurator triggers itself if the xserver-common package (which
contains dexconf) was installed, and does nothing otherwise.

Probably the right number would be 90, but it is currently used by
localization-config. Actually I think that also localization-config
should change its number, as the the keyboard layout should be
injected in the debconf database *before* running xdebconfigurator,
which runs dexconf.

Well, Frans mentions me he doesn't understand my mail and I agree with
him.

Indeed I misunderstood Joey's bug report. I thought he suggested
building the LIST of countries in the shortlist template at RUN TIME
and not BUILD TIME.

This is of course completely wrong as everyone reading joey's mail
carefully will understand he just wants to have the default country be
chosen at BUILD time and not RUN time

So, forget about my comment...I should not try to go back into D-I
after a week-end mostly off hacking it..:-)

I am attaching the package to this message. I haven't commited it

Reboot: [E] Kernel hangs on raid1 root partition[1]

Comments/Problems:

The installation failed with the kernel 2.6.8-1-386 and a raid1 root
partition. The kernel hangs[1] with the default initird. To solve the
problem, I booted on a root backup stored on /dev/hdc3. Then I made
a mkinitrd as it's written in the documentation of mdadm. That is to say:

1) add md and raid1 into /etc/mkinitrd/modules
md
raid1

2) change ROOT on /etc/mkinitrd.conf
ROOT=/dev/md0

3) run mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.8-raid

4) modify /boot/grub/menu.lst to specify to use the initrd I had
created

debian-installer version pre-rc2.

This problem was already known many months ago, and reported in #244956.

Bye,

Cc'ing debian-boot... pls keep them on Cc for any follow-ups.

First of all: what type of installer image were you using? CD, netboot,
etc? And from what date?

I think the latest image I tried on my Ultra5 was a daily netinst from a
couple of weeks ago, and it worked fine. I didn't do anything special.
Just a simple boot crom the CD.

You should probably try the pre-RC2[1] netinst ISO, and if that doesn't
work, try the latest[2] daily instead.

If those images don't work, check to see if your memory sticks are
located in DIMM3/4. If so, try moving them to DIMM1/2. If moving them
solves the problem, we have a regression in the installer image, since
this issue was actually solved a long time ago now.

If nothing works at all, file an installation report
 and
provide a _complete_ log from your serial console.

If this is a new package, I think it's OK to commit it now : this
won't interfere with the (finished) string freeze and this gives
translators a chance to update translations as soon as possible.

Joey, do you agree?

I think I'd rather fix the packages in question than have the
workarounds in build and the PKG_CONFIG_PATH hack in cdebconf. We're not
in an enormous hurry here, and the GNOME maintainers are pretty
responsive; better to do it properly. Also, the directfb maintainer said
on IRC that he'd be happy to remove the /usr/lib/udeblib madness once we
have a working system without it.

Cheers,

ACPI breakage on Dell Optiplex GX280

2004-10-11 Thread elijah wright
I keep running into this bug, so I'm going to note it here so folks have
some hope of finding it and understanding what's going on.

I just did a d-i run on a pristine (took it out of the box ~30 minutes
ago) Dell GX280, 3GB memory, dual SATA disks.

everything seems to roll merrily along - the installer works great, as
usual, and everything seems to happen properly.

until you reboot.
when you reboot, it hangs right after init fires up.
the fix is to specify "acpi=off" in the grub command-line before one boots
the system. the system will then progress onward in a normal-seeming
fashion.

[there seems to be some exim4 brokenness on my machine at first boot, but
i suppose someone has already reported that.]

i'm tempted to think that acpi=off is something that ought to be appended
to the "recovery"-style grub defaults when d-i is installed.

comments, thoughts, other fixes?
thanks,
--elijah

Build conflicts: upx-ucl-beta (>= 1.93)

2004-10-11 Thread Geert Stappers
Hello,

A new build got me:

  Build conflicts: upx-ucl-beta (>= 1.93)

Looking further brougth me to installer/debian/changelog with

- upx-ucl-beta 1.93 is broken. Avoid building with this version via
Build-Conflicts. The safe version to use, 1.91, is in testing.
  Closes: #275378

And there is the upload of upx-ucl-beta with a epoch.

I think the Build-Depends should get "upx-ucl-beta ( >= 1:91+020030910cvs-2) [i386]"
And the Build-Conflicts on "upx-ucl-beta ( >= 1.93 )" be dropped.
(doing so allowed me to rebuild d-i)

I agree that xdebconfigurator should be executed after both pkgsel and
the debconf preloading part of localization-config. We could use '91'
to make sure it is after both. Any objections?

An alternative is to move localization-config earlier in the process.
Not sure how early it can be moved and still work.

Comments/Problems:
Minor nitpicks:
After the initial question of language, I did not find Norway as one of the
primary countriesafter having selected UK English, I would guess most
Norwegian running debian has english as their "main computing language"
Further on, having told the installer that I was in Norway, I was a bit
surprised not to find norwegian as the pre selecetd keyboard

On the partitioning step, I was a bit confused on which buttons that meant
[OK] and [Cancel] quite a few times, I defined a partition, just to manage to
misunderstand which button to press and immideately lose it again. Might have
been a bit late though..

Mainly, just great! I have installed quite a few debian 3.0 system, this was
mostly a much more 'polished' experience.

Comments/Problems:
When creating raid1 arrays "missing" should be able to be specified, so that
degraded mirrors can be created. e.g. "mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1
--raid-devices=2 /dev/hda1 missing" creates md0 with no mirror so that you
can add it later. (same applys for raid5 but not raid0 or linear)

Comments/Problems:

I previously had a problem with the installer not detecting my SATA
hard drive (reference Bug #255263). It now detects the HD but locks up
about 1% into formatting the root partition. Per advice I received when I
filed the last bug report, I'm attaching a printout of the report-hw
command. Please let me know if you need additional information. Any help
would be greatly appreciated!!

Comments/Problems:

Very nice session. Thanks for the great job. The only problem I met
is related to xfree. The xdebconfigurator finds a VIDEO CARD: S3
ProSavage DDR-K and declares the driver is savage. But once
configuring xfree with debconf, it only works if I select vesa,
instead of savage.

Cheers,

Comments/Problems:

(1) any of the guided partition schemes using largest
block of free space wanted to create an active primary
partition for the root filesystem after the extended
partition. i thought that might mess up the existing
98/xp install; so manually partitioned as noted above
knowing that linux can boot from pretty much anywhere.
three partitions, boot root and swap, is what i have
always used for a linux desktop (if linux is sole o/s,
then i use three primaries for them). probably not
much of a concern, it just didn't partition as
expected (i had expected all logical drives, similar
to my manual partitioning, since a parim

The primary differences in the install were that install-powerpc was
chosen on this install instead of expert-powerpc and
debian.mirrors.pair.com was chosen on this install instead of
ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu.
You had no problem with this install, and problems that could be due to
outdated or corrupt packages during the other two. It sounds to me like
a mirror problem, perhaps something prevents you from downloading from
ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu, or its powerpc archive is out of date.
Actually, across both ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu and
debian.mirrors.pair.com, the results were the same. Both error upon
attempting to install initrd-tools package when sid is selected with
the expert-powerpc, and both succeed when install-powerpc is selected
(no option for selecting sarge or sid is presented in this option). I
have repeated the tests with today's image (20041011) for the business
card iso, and the results are the same.

I don't see why we would need that. I'm suggesting that the default
answers to the country shortlist questions be determined at build time,
not at run time.

The bind mount has to be removed before step 15, which is when the CD is
ejected. I didn't know that languagechooser and kbdchooser were
installing things after that. But see bug #270563. The prebaseconfig
scripts are not really the right place to apt-install stuff at all.

Guys, we really don't have a lot of time to fix this kind of problem.
This is pushing the initrd builds back further and further from the
timeline..

Bug#276111: prebaseconfig script is run after CD is unmounted

2004-10-11 Thread Joey Hess
Package: network-console
Severity: normal

In prebaseconfig, the CD is unmounted and apt-install is no longer
guaranteed to work after step 10. The prebaseconfig script for
network-console runs at 85 or so and uses apt-install. This will fail
for installs from CD. I assume that so far all installs using
network-console have been from the network..

Bug#276110: prebaseconfig tries to apt-install packages after the CD is ejected

2004-10-11 Thread Joey Hess
Package: kbd-chooser
Severity: normal

The prebaseconfig script tries to apt-install some packages after the CD
is ejected.

Luckily, all the packages seem to be installed for other reasons
already (because base-config depends on them). Still, this needs to be
fixed.

This isn't the correct list; please contact debian-user with such
problems in the future.

That said, i2c-source isn't available in testing. You'll need to
pull a version from stable or unstable. You can find links to the
package at

I think I've fixed this problem with the latest languagechooser upload.
Other packages that use apt-install too late have had bugs filed. I've
tested and it seems that we get cyrillic in second stage now. If there
are other problems that need changes to languagechooser to be fixed,
they will probably have to go in the errata for the release.

Bug#273234: (no subject)

2004-10-11 Thread Joachim Dahl
I have the exact same problem with the same model.
Using a pre-rc2 or nightly build with kernel 2.6 I could do a complete
installation, but
then it freezes during boot.

The symptons and error messages seems to identical to:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2004/09/msg00414.html
and if that's true I will have to agree with the author of the above bug
report:

"What I _really_ do not understand is why this is not seen as a serious problem."
But maybe when Dell's new model start to flood the PC market that will
change ;)
Meanwhile I guess my best option is to buy a PATA harddrive.

I don't see any package named i2c-source.

If you want to install the source code of a package, add to
/etc/apt/sources.list a line for sources, deb-src.
See man sources.list.

As you have probably seen since, this mail from me was completely
stupid..:-)

I interpreted your request badly, essentially because I personnally
think that a few build-time things could be moved to run-time in
language/country choosers (let's say localechooser now).

For instance, idealistically, the list of countries for a given
language should be built at run time, not build time. This would save
us the rebuild of localechooser when a new locale is added.

However, the new (and good) scheme for handling the shortlist does not
allow this anymore.

This is not really a must-have, though

I've gotten this package working. One bug I know of is that it always
makes partitions the minimum size from the recipe. I know you had
planned to make the last partition use all remaining space in the
volume, but I disabled that for now as I don't know a good way to do
that. Also, I think it would be better if it sized all the partitions
based on the amount of free space, instead of only making the last one
use it all, and it could also leave some free space unused for later
expansion. Autopartkit seems to manage to do a good job, perhaps we
could look at the methods it uses.

Maybe using the minimum sizes is ok for now, since the partitions can
always be grown later..

The other thing I'd like to see to make this more useful is a way to
tell it to erase a disk and use the disk for lvm. As it is, only users
with an empty disk will see the partman-auto-lvm stuff.

Actually, I don't really like the day it asks about using lvm in the
partman-auto sequence now. I feel that whether to use LVM is orthagonal
to selecting what space to autopartition, and lumping them together into
one question makes some useful possibilities not be available. It is a
neat feature to use _all_ free space for lvm, but it would also be nice
to be able to select an individual disk or free space and tell it to
autopartition it using lvm.

initrd build update (last call)

2004-10-11 Thread Joey Hess
It looks like all the issues are sorted out for the initrds, I plan to
begin the final build shortly after archive sync tomorrow. I'm only
waiting now for a few builds to be uploaded from the autobuilders and
similar.

Looking at the timeline, starting the initrd builds tomorrow will give
us 9 days before their due date on the 21st. Barring more delays I think
we'll manage that with 5 days to spare. We also have just 9 days to
finish up all changes to udebs that are not in the initrds, so it's time
to start making sure all udebs are ready for release.
