Hola amig@: Me llamo Verónica. First error was when running keyboard config before loading some udebs I didn't know i was required to do so and i got an error... When i tried to partition the vmware drive it crashed .. However i noticed some nice things in it and i think it will be great :) Radu -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

want kernel-headers on install CD
When making a Debian distribution CD image, please include the kernel-headers package for each kernel-image package on the CD. I recently installed Debian from a Woody distribution mini-CD on two Dell Dimensions that had unsupported video and ethernet hardware. After the Debian install, I had to also install driver source and compile modules for these two devices. Compiling the drivers required installed kernel-headers. This was difficult because they were not on the install CD. And even more difficult because I couldn't fetch them over the network until I had installed the missing network driver. So, it would ease that initial installation in some cases if kernel-headers were always available along with the kernel image. < Stephen P.S, I hope this is the right list. It wasn't clear to me whether I should post here or on debian-cd. The missing drivers are for the Broadcom BCM4401 integrated ethernet and for the Intel 845G integrated graphics chipset. The 845G is supported in XFree86 4.3.0. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

debian-installer test
Hi all, during the OpenLanParty in Milano, we played a little bit with the new debian installer. We submit here some comments about our testing. 1. from the udeb list we would like to remove the name of the package since the label isn't completely readable and probably; 2. on the same screen, we would like to 'tab' from the module list to the 'continue' button instead of the actual 'go back' button. On the same screen, if you select some modules and then press go-back, then you select once again the 'module selection list' then you do not see as selected the modules selected during the first visit to that screen; 3. we tested the installation on many old machines that had old/dirty cdrom devices. On that machines we got read errors that were shown as 'integrity check failure on package ...'. We think that it could be useful if the installer could check an md5sum/crc of the disc. The corrected md5sum/crc might be put on the disc label; 4. during the static network configuration (choice the domain name, the DNS, ...) it isn't possible to select the 'go back' button; 5. the menu item 'detect CDROM devices and mount ...' does not detect our CD on a 'HP Omnibook XT6200'. Calling hw-detect-full we get the error 'Unknown MATSHITADVD-ROM SR-8175' on the 4th console; 6. selecting the dhcp3 udeb the DHCP network isn't configured. We found a message on the 4th console: 'execve (/etc/dhcp3/dhcpit-script,..): Not a directory'; 7. selecting 'partitioner' we get the message 'Failed to partition the disc /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc.' just after the selection of the disc . At this point there is noway to go on since the user interface is blocked. We may only switch to differentent console, but we cannot select neighter 'continue' nor 'go back'; 8. on a Acer Aspire 1314LC from item menu 'configure the network via dhcp' the NIC isn't recognized (a Via Technologies VT6102 rhine-II) so a message is printed suggesting to go back, while the user interface permits only to continue. If the module 'ethdetect' is selected on the first screen then DHCP is run correctly but then it isn't possible to go back; 9. when on the screen of 'selection language' it isn't possible to 'go back'; 10. the partitioner module complains about a missing libslang.so.1 library while in the /lib there is only libslang.so.1-UTF8. Installation report on two macs
Hi all, I just tried an installation of the new debian-installer (from CVS) on two machine A. powerbook3,5 titanium [EMAIL PROTECTED], 512Mb RAM, 40Gb HD, radeon 9000 B. powermac2.1, iMac, 64Mb RAM 1. I built a debian-installer cd image (cd build; make TYPE=cdrom cd_image) 2. I rebuilt a cd of sarge using jigdo 3. I mounted the iso image using loop and rebuilt the same image using mkisofs but specifying as boot image the new cd_image: mkisofs -r -T --netatalk -hfs -probe -map boot/powerpc/hfs.map -part -no-desktop -hfs-bless ./tmp/cdrom/cd_image_tree/boot -hfs-volid Debian-Installer/PPC -o /home/giuseppe/cdiso/cdrom-completo.iso ./tmp/cdrom/cd_image_tree /mnt/loop0 When the machine boots using the new CD, yaboot starts and then the kernel is loaded and the boot suddenly stop. The last lines on the screen are: kmod failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k net-pf-1, errno=2 init started: BusyBox v1.00-pre3 (2003:08:25-08:35+000) multi-call binar kmod failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k net-pf-1, errno=2 ADB keyboard ... detected ADB ... input1: ... input2: ... kmod failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k net-pf-1, errno=2 ADB mouse at 3, handler set to 4readlink: /proc/self/fd/0: No such file or directory trying to solve this problem we found that in build/powerpc/yaboot.conf the line 'append="init=/linuxrc"' is missing. This line is required in order to properly boot the powerbook. Once the kernel boot we found impossible to load any modules. This is because the busybox-cvs-udeb.udeb was compiled without lsmod/rmmod/modprobe/insmod. We then tried to find the correct source of busybox byt this seems to be impossible: the source from unstable are older than the version printed during the boot by the udeb downloaded from the archive. We then tried to get a newer busybox from the original FTP site but we did not manage to get a working CD, since the generated image was running the busybox, but there wasn't any output. In this case, where busybox doesn't start, we found that the /dev was missing, so adding 'devfs=mount' to the yaboot run command make busybox start (but crashing...) In this case the problem is probably the kernel udeb that is missing same option. We also noticed that these options are included in the i386 syslinux.cfg. Questions: 1. where are the right sources of busybox? 2. why append="init=/linuxrc" is missing from yaboot.conf? did someone tried to install d-i on a powerpc before? Anyway, the list of available keyboards include only amiga keyboard. This is not so useful having a mac :-) The worst thing is that if you get to the choice of keyboards, then you cannot go back. If so, we can simply > include the append paramter. First, thanks for your explaination. Second, we tested on both iMac and powerbook3.4 and 3.5. We thought that this was a kernel bug (or, more probably) a CONFIG_* missing, but then even in syslinux.cfg we found that this parameter is passed to the kernel. > | Once the kernel boot we found impossible to load any modules. Two ways to solv > this problem: > 1. fix busybox-cvs :) > 2. install the modutils udebs (modutils-basic, modutils-full) This explain why we got an earlier kernel panic with the busybox recompiled with modprobe. We weren't aware of this problem in busybox, but we understood that modprobe is missing. There is an enormous lack of documentation on the installer, we had really many problems tring to understand how it works and how to modify it. And the problem that you are pointing -- about modprobe not working on powerpc -- is not filed as bug. So noone was aware of it. Re: patch (Re: i18n of cdebconf)
[Tomohiro KUBOTA] > Here is the patch. It replaces the line-folding (or text-wrapping) > algorithm for "text", "slang", and "newt" frontends. Please check > it. Or, should I cvs-commit it at first? I read your patch, and have a few comments. It was very small. That is good. You should only declare one variable per line, to make it easier to find changes in the future using CVS. I would also like to have the textwrap code as a compile time option for now, and let it use the new library you uploaded instead of including the code in the cdebconf source. I suggest protecting your changes with '#ifdef HAVE_LIBTEXTWRAP', and adding code in configure.in to detect if the library is present. This way, we can easily test it without enabling it in the uploaded version. I would like to be able to test it first, and then perhaps remove the compile time option to make it required. If you protect the code like this, and keep the library code out of the cdebconf source, feel free to commit the change. :) Also, I want to make sure all parts of the installer use the same shared libtextwrap, to limit the disk image size. Regarding the library itself, I am not convinced that this charset normalization is a good idea: Since the return value of nl_langinfo() may differ depending on systems (such as "EUC-JP" vs "eucJP"), the encoding names are normalized (all-uppercase, eliminate non-alphanumerics). It is better to find and fix all systems not using a standard charmap name. But this will be hidden in the library, so cdebconf do not really need to worry about it. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Re: Cannot boot sarge distribution
[Sven Luther] > BTW, i tried booting the cdrom initrd with a kernel i usually use, > which has most of the stuff built-in, and d-i complained loudly > about all those missing modules. Yes. It is annoying. Is there any way for hw-detect to find out if the module is compiled into the kernel, or to find out that the HW in question already is detected? This is reported as bug #200467, "Hardware detection should not fail when all required modules are included in kernel", and I have no idea how to solve it properly. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: debian-installer test
>> Please try to partition the disk by hand on the second console (to >> make sure fdisk can use the disk). I'll try it asap. But the partitioner complains about the lack of libslang.so.1; entering in a console and just symlinking to libslang.so.1-UTF8 solves the problem. The error message is precisely: cfdisk: error while loading shared libraries: libslang.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory di-utils-partitioner's postinst exited with status 256 > When tring on intel machines, the disk were already partitioned, while > when we had a try at vmware we got a crash at this very point. The > vmware crashed and the host computer did the same -- even if the vwmare > wasn't run by root :-( Yes, trying the installer with vmware crashes not only the virtual machine but also the whole system, but only using physically the cdrom. (accessing directly to /dev/cdrom). Using an iso image of the cd mounted as a cdrom in vmware makes possible to go on with the installer without hanging the machine.
