[Debconf-team] Questions for the 新竹市 (Hsinchu, Taiwan) Team
Dear Hsinchu team Thank you for your bid, it looks great so far! I sometimes see Hsinchu written as HsinChu, are both forms acceptable? Is one more preferred than the other? The list of local hardware companies (MediaTek, RealTek, TMSC, DLink, etc) is impressive. Between the members of the local team, do you know anyone at these companies and do you know if they'd be willing to participate and attend at DebConf? I suppose it's too premature to talk about specific workshops and events but it seems like a stellar opportunity to open up communication to these companies to improve ongoing hardware support in Debian. Is that an aspect that you have considered before? Would you plan to have some specific sessions or just get people together and let it evolve? (it's fine either way, would just like to see in which direction you're thinking regarding that). When I first drafted this e-mail, I already noted that http://g0v.tw/ looks really interesting and that it would make a great organisation to speak at DC. After seeing your post about Audrey Tang, I think even more so. Any chance that she would be willing to speak at DC17? I know it's probably a long shot, but I had to ask :) The pictures of the city look beautiful, but the only thing I understand on the signs are the phone numbers. With your experience with foreigners visiting mini-debconfs and other large local events, how easy is it for foreigners to get by? If I get lost, would I be able to find my way back to my accomodation? (and what about late at night if it's 2am already?). Are there any local apps where I could call a taxi where I could select my destination in advance? Would I be able to easily find help in an emergency? Does dialing 112 work? And how about roaming, can foreigners typically use their home sim cards on Chinese networks (it's always useful to stay in contact with home if you're not close to a computer). On that note, is Facebook openly accessable there? Not that I particularly care, but I'm taking into consideration the first methods of communication that people will attempt to use when they land there to tell their family that they have arrived there safely and I'm not that familiar with the status of the great wall of China and how that affects Taiwan. If it's possible to get a local prepaid sim card, I suggest you add that info to your page too along with details from above that you might consider important. The hikes sound great! How is pollution there? Would someone who has asthma or similar conditions have to take any special precautions? I think it's great that you mention CJKV Localization on your page, it's fantastic to see a goal that's relevant locally that can attract people and encourage them to get involved. CJKV support and hardware support could make great themes for DC17 (just my personal view). It's great that the bid page has some pictures of local foods, but that section needs some expansion and information for people who have specific dietary needs and preferences. Maybe also listing some close-by supermarkets or online grocers, having that info available for someone as a last resort when there's nothing close by it eat is quite important. A listing of close-by restaurants would also be great, especially if there are vegetarian and vegan restaurants close by. Your bid has many strong aspects behind it, good luck and thanks again for the work you have already put in! -Jonathan ___ Debconf-team mailing list Debconf-team@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-team
[Debconf-team] Questions for the Curitiba (Brazil) Team
Dear Curitiba team Thanks for your really good bid page. And thanks for including the pronunciation clip, I had to do a search to find it for Hsinchu :) Winter temperatures in Curitiba look similar to the temperatures we had in Cape Town. We warned people to bring some warm tops and something comfortable to sleep in since we didn't have central heating at our venue. How is that in Curitiba (and more specifically at the planned accommodation)? Might be worth while to add a note to remind people that it's winter on outgoing communication shortly before DC. The details around Comunidade Curitiba Livre and its history are interesting. Is this also the organisation that you'll be using for handling local DebConf affairs? If so, is it already formally incorporated as a volunteer, for-profit or non-profit organisation? You mention that the academic calendar is sometimes a little unpredictable. How unpredictable is that? When the university locks down dates at the venue, will you be able to trust them? You mention that UTFPR closes doors at 23:00. Are the nearby hotels/hostels walking distance? (at least there's Uber locally which is good if someone gets stuck) If I understand the Power section correctly, you use both 220 volts and 127 volts power in Brazil. What do you use in Curitiba? Is it at least standard city-wide or do some buildings have their own transformers to take it up/down? How far is the Curitiba municipal market from UTFPR? Looking at the cheesemarket photos I can imagine that a large number of people would want to stop by there for their C&W contribution. You mentioned 'close' but does that mean walking distance or short ride? Good luck and thanks for all the work you have put in to the bid so far! -Jonathan ___ Debconf-team mailing list Debconf-team@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-team

Thank you for the tips about the note. As the accommadaton have to be in a hotel, the rooms have air conditioning. > The details around Comunidade Curitiba Livre and its history are > interesting. "Comunidade Curitiba Livre" is not a organisation. We will use ASL.Org, the organisation that handled DebConf4. > You mention that the academic calendar is sometimes a little > unpredictable. So, after that, It will not change. > You mention that UTFPR closes doors at 23:00. Are the nearby > hotels/hostels walking distance? No transformers are commonly available (you can find them to buy though). > How far is the Curitiba municipal market from UTFPR? Re: [Debconf-team] Questions for the Curitiba (Brazil) Team
Hi all, I have some questions to you :-) Obviously I know that DebConf is important for Debian development, but how important is to the city to have the Debian community for some days working there? Do you expect that DebConf promote some kind of technological evolution in the country, or more specifically in the city? Do you think an international event such as DebConf helps the city to grow in IT area? Do you hope to somehow help people improve their IT skills, especially with free software? So there may be some possibilities to explore therein perhaps, both on routers per-se as well as AP's. > > -Jonathan > ___ > Debconf-team mailing list > Debconf-team@lists.debconf.org > http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-team > -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-team mailing list Debconf-team@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-team

I think there are two parts actually to that question - a. How important is it to debconf to have community for some days working there ? For something like Debconf, logistics is going to make or break you. Having people who have done it before and know what needs to be done makes it easier for everybody, although AFAIK all positions for debconf are voluntary in nature. If you have local people and Debian people working together it should lessen pressure a bit on the local team and also would be a better experience for attendees. b. How important is it TO the city to have Debian community working there ? I *think* one of the things which can and does derail conferences beside poor planning is mis-communication and mis-understanding especially where people from 130-140 countries will be coming in. There are quite few instructions that Debconf organizers share with us before debconf which does and could help us in having the most out of Debconf. We rely on the organizers to intimate us of all and any changes before and during Debconf to make the most of it. > Do you expect that DebConf promote some kind of technological evolution in > the country, or more specifically in the city? This actually falls on the Debian local people how they see it fit as part of it is outreach. For instance, we do have the open day where people are welcomed to try out Debian and there are usually a few activities planned around that day. Now because we are talking of Brazil, one idea that could be looked at is having a float about Debian going around the city talking, sharing, showing Debian both in Portugese, English and any other language that people see fit. There is lots about security, privacy and such themes that could be used to share as part of Debian awareness also. And this will not be the first, at least in India I know of few friends who did the FirefoxOS bus which was for a better part of month on road - https://reps.mozilla.org/e/firefoxos-bus/ Not a month, but maybe a week we could do. I would volunteer to be part of such an initiative if we are able to raise funds and have few people who are interested to be part of it. > Do you think an international event such as DebConf helps the city to grow > in IT area? Not directly, but Debconf does have job fairs and such . The idea is to let both parties find each other and also make people aware that free software skills can land you in a job if you are looking for it. Also for companies, it's an opportunity to share limelight with Debian and there are always possibilities for work for companies as well. See the Debian partners program https://www.debian.org/partners/ It's a win-win situation for both Debian and the companies therein. > Do you hope to somehow help people improve their IT skills, especially with > free software? Absolutely, that is part and parcel of Debconf. While people try not to spoon-feed, if they see that a person has tried everything and is still stuck, they do try to help out, at the end of the day anything and everything is problem-solving . The idea is to germinate the freedom seed wherever we go and have a community around that. Hope that helped you clarify some of the points you raised. > Best regards, > > -- > Paulo Henrique de Lima Santana (phls) > Curador de Software Livre da Campus Party Brasil 2017 (CPBR10) > Membro da Comunidade Curitiba Livre > Fone: +55 (41) 99198-1897 > Site: http://www.phls.com.br > GNU/Linux user: 228719 GPG ID: 0443C450 > > Apoie a campanha pela igualdade de gênero #HeForShe (#ElesPorElas) > http://www.heforshe.org/pt > ___ > Debconf-team mailing list > Debconf-team@lists.debconf.org > http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-team > -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-team mailing list Debconf-team@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-team

They do also have rainforests but don't remember where. You forgot the soccer :-) Brazil is a continental country so we have many differences between the regions. In the North is the Amazon rainforest where the climate is hot and humid. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_rainforest In the Northeast are the most beautiful beaches in Brazil, the weather is hot all year round If you like beaches, you must go there :-) http://www.decolar.com/blog/dicas-de-viagem/10-melhores-praias-do-nordeste-brasileiro http://viajandocompouco.com.br/dicas-de-viagem/10-melhores-destinos-nordeste-brasileiro/ The southeast is the most industrialized region and where are the most known cities: Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. São Paulo has the most of IT Companies, but some of them are coming to Curitiba because we are not far from São Paulo, the quality of life is better and the labor is cheaper. I remember now ExxonMobil and GLT (HSBC). Other local companies are specializing in outsourcing. In the South the weather is cold on the winter. The region was populated by immigrants mainly from Japan and Europe. Curitiba has strong influence of the Japaneses, Italians, Germans, Poles, and Ukrainians immigrants. > They do a mean job of percussions though (on drum) and they have > their own martial art which I can't remember the name of atm.
