Thank Neil, I added myself to that page.

From [1], it seems that quite a lot of people arrive the 12th, at

So, I'll be happy to share the taxi with others :-D

As a side note, while my passport was valid (re-newed the day before

FWIW (and maybe too late), I used a one-line script written by Zack (I
hope he doen't mind I post his script here):

  $ grep -A 1 '\[x\].*\[x\]' ksp-dc6.txt | grep ^pub | cut -c 13-20

This extracts all the key IDs that are marked with an "[x]" for
"Fingerprint OK" and "ID OK".

For the passphrase problem, I think the simple (not the best) solution
is to unset the password before caff and set it again after.

[Debconf-discuss] [TRAVEL] Anyone arriving in Edinburgh by motorbike?

2007-01-21 Thread Luca Capello
Hello,

I know I should have written this mail before, so blame me :-)

I'm planning to join DebConf7 by a motorbike riding [1] [2] from
Genève (Switzerland). ViaMichelin [3] shows around 1500km, which
obviously cannot be ride in one day. Thus, I'll probably stop in
Paris and London to visit some friends.

Here a more detailed plan (which is not yet the final one):

1) leave from Genève on Sunday 10th and arrive in Paris in the evening
   (around 550km)

2) leave from Paris on Tuesday 12th and arrive in London in the
evening (around 400km, plus the Eurotunnel [4], around 100€ for a
   round trip)

3) leave from London on Friday 15th and finally arrive in Edinburgh in
   the evening (around 650km)

4) mostly the same route will be for the returning trip, leaving
   Edinburgh on Sunday 24th.

Anyone interested?

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

I think that it should be clearly stated what kind of IDs are
preferred, at least to avoid problems during the keysigning.

For example, EU citizens aren't required to have a passport to enter
UK and thus they could travel with national IDs only, which I'm not
sure everyone would accept.

[Debconf-discuss] DebConf8 bus from EZE to MDQ (was Re: [Debconf-announce] DebConf8 reconfirmation deadline)

Hi there!

On Mon, 19 May 2008 20:42:14 +0200, Margarita Manterola wrote:
> We are now starting the reconfirmation period for DebConf8.

While reconfirming my attendance at DebConf8, I noticed that I haven't
yet reserved the bus from EZE to MDQ, as suggested at [1]:

There are 8 daily regular trips leaving from Ezeiza airport to Mar del
Plata offered by Manuel Tienda Leon for around 37€ round-trip, and it
  lasts about 6 hours.
  [...]
It is posible to make a reservation sending a mail to
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This because on the travel registration page there's the following text:

  Arrival

I will be taking the bus from BA to Mar Del Plata. (y/n)

We are asking this question so that we can make sure that the company
which runs the buses will have enough available seats (including
running extra buses if necessary). It will still be your
responsibility to arrange your own bus tickets.

The first time I read it as "there'll be enough seats on the buses, but
you need to pay the ticket by yourself before taking the bus".

Now that I read it again, it sounds different as in "there'll be enough
seats on the buses, but you need to *reserve* and pay the ticket by
yourself before taking the bus".

Which is the correct reading for that?

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

[Debconf-discuss] OpenPGP cards available as well as a CHIPDRIVE SIM Card Stick

2008-08-12 Thread Luca Capello
Hi all!

I know I'm a bit late (since I was here at DebCamp, too), but I was
captured by the Openmoko FreeRunner, sorry.

I brought something like 7/8 OpenPGP cards [1] together with a CHIPDRIVE
SIM Card Stick [2] (which is a resold version of the SCM SCR3320 [3]).
Both the card and the reader works flawlessly on Debian (at least with
GnuPG-1.4.x), but I haven't tested them with any complex setup (lack of
time...).

If anyone is interested in buying either one or more cards or the
reader, please look for me [4].

Since it seems that quite a lot of people were/are interested, I can buy
again some and then send them to the people interested. And the same
could happen for the readers, at least if you don't want to spend time
to look for them.

So, if anyone is interested, he should get in contact with me: I don't
know the best way to manage this, either through the Debian Wiki (is
this kind of use allowed?) or any other mailing list (debian-curiosa?).

I performed all my tests using the PC/SC standard [1] through pcscd [2].
A list of all the supported readers is available at [3]. Other
accessing methods are available (e.g. OpenCT [4]), but I've never tested
them.

Now, more information about the cards. They are in full credit card
size. They can work with any SIM-size reader, but you need to cut them.
I already did it several times and I now have a template to do it, so I
can do it for you. You'll end up with a SIM-size card *and* the
template, which means that you can still use the card with a full-size
reader :-)

Their price can be checked on kernel concepts website [5]: since I
bought 10 of them, the price was around €14. I guess that the price
should go down even further for bigger purchase numbers.

About how to use the card with GnuPG, please read the documents at [6]
and the GnuPG Smartcard HowTo at [7]. If you don't understand something
or have any question, feel free to write me and I'll help you as much as
I can. My biggest recommandations are to use the card with subkeys and
to generate the encryption subkey on a desktop machine, making a backup
of it and then moving it to the card [8].

And now for the readers!

I tested two full-size PCMCIA models (Gemplus/Gemalto [9] and Omnikey
[10]): while they both worked, the former seems to give some problems
[11] and the second needs a binary-only handler from upstream [12], but
it seems that GnuPG2 should support it internally [13].

I tested three USB readers, all of them working without out of the box
with pcscd. The SCM SCR335 [14] (also known as CHIPDRIVE micro pro
[15]) is a full-size reader, it costs €30 from kernel concepts [5] and
it's internally supported by GnuPG [13]. As SIM-size readers, there are
the SCM SCR3320 [16] (or CHIPDRIVE SIM Card Stick [17]) and the Omnikey
CardMan 6121 USB [18]. The latter exists also coupled with a flash
memory, produced by Eutron (sorry, flash required [19]).

I think it's enough. I now realised that it could have been a good talk
for a BoF, next time!

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

I would seem a bit "oldish", but it seems that because of JavaScript I
cannot use W3M/Emacs to register to DebConf9: the major problem is that
the buttons are not clickable. While this is a minor pain for things
like "Add [language|im adresss|phone number|link]", the fact that I
cannot save what I have entered means that I need to re-enter everything
on a JavaScript-enabled browser.

NB, this is not a rant.

[Debconf-discuss] Motorbike trip to Cáceres

2009-04-03 Thread Luca Capello
Hi all!

Some of you maybe remember that for DebConf7 I travelled from Genève to
Edimburgh with my motorbike: because of the very beautiful weather I
had, it was mostly a wet journey.

For this year DebConf I will do the same and there are already two
differences WRT DebConf7: first, the weather should not be so rainy (I
hope) and, second, I will not travel alone, since after having been one
of the maybe-next-DPL "sponsors", I will also be Zack's bodyguard on the
long way to Cáceres :-)

Zack and me have not yet finished to plan the trip and we still have two
major open points:

- dates

We slightly agreed that a good option would be to arrive at Cáceres
on Saturday, July 18th and then to leave at most on Friday, July 31th.

Since Zack needs to be in Italy on Sunday, Aug 2nd, the departure will
be at most on Friday, July 31th.

- route

For the departure trip, depending on Zack's motorbike location
(Bologna, Italy, or MarParis, France), we will meet either something
  near Marseille or Bordeau, respectively.

Tre trip distance is around 2000km, which in no way can be completed
in a single day. We have not discussed this in details, but a good
option would be three stops somewhere on the road.

Again, given Zack's "obligations" for the return trip, we will head
  towards South France after DebConf9.

Is anyone else interested?

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

AFAIK no one has talked about OpenPGP cards since DebConf8, where I had
some spare OpenPGP cards (with reader) to sell:

  http://lists.debconf.org/lurker/message/20080812.211257.54e21495.en.html

Please use the existing pages on the Debian Wiki:

  http://wiki.debian.org/Smartcards/OpenPGP
  http://wiki.debian.org/Smartcards/OpenPGP/Buying

I still have 5 of them at home (together with one SCM SCR335), but they
are version 1.x, which supports only SHA-1 and RIPEMD160:

  http://www.debian-administration.org/users/dkg/weblog/48#comment_8

I, for myself, will buy a 2.0 card, but it seems they will be available
From Kernel Concepts by July 1st, which leaves a too short period before
my departure to DebConf9.

I asked yesterday via the Tuxbrain contact form, but I think it could be
useful for other as well, thus asking here again.

I have a Tuxbrain account for the "normal" shop, and it seems that this
account does not work for the DebConf shop: is it normal? I would

I do not understand this one. What has Openmoko Inc. to do here? I
mean, AFAIK there was no official announcement from Openmoko Inc. about
fixing every smartphone they have sold, thus I do not see why they want
the S/N of the repaired devices.

This raises another question: I did not buy my FR from Tuxbrain, but
From Pulster.de (one year ago it was more or less the only European
distributor), thus my warranty "depends" on Pulster.de. However, if
Openmoko Inc. wants to know that my device has been repaired for the
buzz problem, does this mean that my warranty is still valid?

NB, I do not care about my warranty and I want a buzz fixed smartphone
instead ;-)

[Debconf-discuss] [MERCHANDISE] Various t-Shirts and foilstickers from debian.ch

2009-07-23 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

debian.ch produces some Debian merchandise as you can see at:

  http://debian.ch/merchandise/

Around 40 `apt-get install T-Shirts` and 16 debian.ch ones are on sale
at the Front Desk here in Cáceres:

  http://debconf9.debconf.org/venue.xhtml

Prices are 15EUR for each T-Shirt (independently of the model and size)
and 1.5EUR, 3EUR or 7EUR for the small, medium and big foilstickers,
respectively.

Obviously, the extra money will be either donated back to Debian or used
for Debian-related activity in Switzerland and in the Principality of
Liechtenstein.

[Debconf-discuss] Debian umbrellas for DebConf10: order *now*!

2010-06-18 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

As Planet Debian readers already know, Adrian von Bidder produced a very
nice Debian umbrella:

  http://blog.fortytwo.ch/archives/80-Yay!-Debian-Logo!.html

Given that someone already showed interest for them to be available at
DebConf10 as well, I will bring some (together with other debian.ch
merchandise ). However, given that I
will be short on luggage space, I could probably bring no more than
10-15 of them.

This is why the umbrella selling policy for DebConf10 is "first arrived,
first served", so interested people should sign up ASAP (orders close on
June 27th) on the DebConf wiki (and also send me an email, please):

Since someone privately asked about it, here a special note.

My idea behind bringing the umbrellas to DebConf10 is mostly for those
people who live very far away from Switzerland and thus it could be
quite expensive to send the umbrella by mail. I, for myself, would be
quite upset if an EU citizen will get an umbrella at DebConf10 and
because of that a South American fellow will be left without.

[Debconf-discuss] Debian Merchandise BoF?

2010-07-29 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there or, better, here :-)

As usual, debian.ch brought some merchandise (T-Shirts, umbrellas and
foilstickers) to DebConf10:

http://debian.ch/merchandise/
http://lists.debconf.org/lurker/message/20100618.114343.54b5236d.en.html

Since together with Debian-UK it seems that debian.ch is the other major
entity who produce Debian merchandise, during the first night in NYC I
thought that maybe a merchandise BoF could be a good thing, also to let
people attending conferences/meetings/whatever how to get merchandise.

Moreover, since debian.ch will also produce quite soon a Debian (not
debian.ch) Swiss army knife (Victorinox, not Wenger), it would be a good
idea to discuss about which type of knife people would prefer:

http://lists.debian.ch/commun...@lists.debian.ch/2010/msg1.html

I set the R-T to debconf-discuss@ (the Evolution custom header insertion
seems not to work), thus please check if you need to reply to other
addresses.

Thx, bye,

Saturday is obviously not anymore available and anyway I, for myself,

Monday seems to be available: for what is "other locations" there should

Done, scheduled for Monday morning, 10:30-11:30 (AM, of course):

debian.ch
- mugs
Debian Brasil
- pins
Debian Brasil
debian.ch

Debian Brasil
debian.ch
Debian UK
Joost van Baal

Anto Recio & Holger Levsen

I have also bcc:ed all the people interested in or that have/had
merchandise, thus Adrian, Alexander, Anto, Axel, Holger, Felipe,
Gaudenz, maddog, Joost van Baal and Steve McIntyre. I will plan to do
the same sometime after the BoF while sending the final report, so

Giacomo and me are now ready to sell the umbrellas. To cover customs

According to your position in the order list, you should either look for

Well, in that case I would definitively like to participate... if the

The problem is the unusual Columbia repository path:

I still consider this change a worth request (which I did, without

Re: [Debconf-discuss] Debian Merchandise BoF?

Hi there!

These is a report of the Merchandise BoF at DebConf10:

  http://penta.debconf.org/dc10_schedule/events/683.en.html
  http://wiki.debian.org/Merchandise/BoFDebConf10

First of all, thank you to anyone who attended the BoF, it was not only
interested, but also fun to discuss about the different ideas people had
to promote Debian through merchandise.

I cc:ed the debian-publicity@ mailing list because during the meeting we
decided that the best place to continue discussing about merchandise
should be the Debian Marketing Team <http://wiki.debian.org/Marketing>,
which mailing list is... debian-public...@! Before any flame, please
read the *full* mail, thanks in advance.

This very same mail will also be included in the BoF wiki page, if you
need to add something it would be better to both reply to this mail and
update the wiki page if the information belongs to the report as well.

Here we go!

> I have also created a DebConf10-specific wiki page for stuff to be
> discussed during the BoF:
>
> http://wiki.debian.org/Merchandise/BoFDebConf10

I think the best thing is to simply go through the different points.

1) general situation, who has what

Basically, this is already covered in the Wiki merchandise page I create
before the BoF <http://wiki.debian.org/Merchandise>. There are mainly 4
different "entities" with merchandise stuff (Alexander Wirt, Debian
Brasil, debian.ch and Debian UK), plus Adrian von Bidder (umbrellas) and
Anto Recio & Holger Levsen (wine). I vaguely remember someone
(Luciano?) pointed out that something was missing, in that case please
fill in the wiki page and put a note in the report on the BoF page.

It should be stressed out that not all of the merchandise present there
is actually available. My idea was to have a general overview of what
we had, have and could have. I do not think we need at this point a
more specific list, since I am quite sure the common (and well-selling)
merchandise (T-Shirts and foilstickers) is usually renewed/reproduced.

2) status of the official Debian merchandise page
<http://www.debian.org/misc/merchandise>

Given that Debian itself does not sell any merchandise, it was clear
that we should not put any "direct" link on this page, i.e. no links to
the non-commercial organizations.

However, since "the information below is provided as a favor to our
loyal users", it was also clear that we should provide a link to a
non-commercial merchandise page, where our loyal users can find what is
available and how to buy it. This can be the same wiki page of point 1)
above or another one, but it would be better not to have it hosted on
www.d.o, thus anyone can easily modify it.

We discussed shortly about the merchand...@debian.org address, but we
were not able to find out who actually receives this mail, thus we stop
at this point. IMHO this address should be the primary resource for any
merchandise question, being it official/commercial or for booth/event
preparation.

3) sort of HowTo for booth people to complement the DebianEventsHowto

Thanks to the work done by I guess the Debian Publicity Team, we already
have a quite exhaustive wiki page
<http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEventsHowto>. While in this page I have
already added a link to the merchandise wiki page, this is not enough.
Instead, we should complement that page (or create a new one) with
specific information on how to request/manage/return the merchandise.

Following the BoF, I had a discussion with Carl Chenet (together with
Xavier Oswald organizer of the Debian booth at the recent RMLL in
Bordeaux <http://2010.rmll.info/>) and Zack: we ended up with a possible
workflow. Please bear in mind that nothing has been decided yet, on the
contrary everything must be discussed with the different teams involved
(Marketing, Publicity and Events, if it ever exists one).

People organizing booth should deal with a single specific entity and
they should be able to simply request for a booth box. Obviously Debian
will cover any shipping costs, for both receiving and sending
back what was not sold.

This booth box should contain a pre-defined set of merchandise stuff:
T-Shirts, flyers (e.g. <http://debian-flyers.alioth.debian.org/>) and so
on. For a better (and in some case also professional) booth experience,
Debian could also provide booth infrastructure, i.e. foldable containers
for flyers or foldable poster standers [sorry for the names, I do not
have any idea how these are called in English, I hope you can get
them!].

Given the fact that most of the conferences take place either in the
Americas or in Europe, there should be two different boxes and thus at
le

[Debconf-discuss] [MERCHANDISE] Anacrhism T-Shirts and foilstickers from debian.ch at DebConf10

2010-08-06 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

As probably now everyone knows, debian.ch produces some Debian
merchandise as you can see at:

  http://debian.ch/merchandise/

Some `apt-get install T-Shirts`, together with plain/Women/kFreeBSD
swirl and "debian" word foilstickers, are available in CS-hacklab:

Prices are 25USD for a T-Shirt (available in unisex/lady shapes and
S/M/L/XL/XXL/XXXL sizes) and 2/5/10USD for each S/M/L foilsticker,
respectively.

There is also one Debian umbrella left for 30USD:

  http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf10/DebianUmbrella

Obviously, the extra money will be donated back to Debian.

Basically, given that I am not an English native speaker, I tend to make

Hi there!

Sorry for the late reply, I had not the time to finish this during

Thank you micah for that page. I think we should put all the
information on the Debian wiki (since we heavily rely on OpenPGP), or at
least have a "collective" page with various links:

  http://wiki.debian.org/Smartcards/OpenPGP
  http://www.einval.com/~steve/docs/gpg-autofs.html
  http://www.crypto-stick.org/

With this mail, however, I would like to comment on using the HKPS
keyservers.

The problem with this approach is that you cannot use a round-robin
server (like keys.gnupg.net, the default if no specified in gpg.conf, or
subkeys.pgp.net) and relying on a single keyserver can cause problems as
well if the keyserver is not regularly synced.

And IMHO the Indimedia example could have some love, here the problems I
found ;-)

1) the link to the CAcert.org root certificate is broken, you need to
prepend the domain with "www" to get the correct page, otherwise you are
redirected to the CAcert.org homepage.

2) "keyserver hkps://keys.indymedia.org" does not work with the default
GnuPG in stable:
=
l...@baloo:~$ gpg --recv-keys E397832F
gpg: requesting key E397832F from hkps server keys.indymedia.org

The same in squeeze, but with a different error:

gpg: refreshing 3 keys from hkps://keys.indymedia.org

It does, however, with GnuPG-2 in squeeze:

3) at least for Debian, I would rather suggests to use
"keyserver-options ca-cert-file=/etc/ssl/certs/cacert.org.pem", since
that certificate should stay updated: it is part of the ca-certificates
package (installed by default in a standard Debian graphical
environment) and it is also activated by default.

[Debconf-discuss] Motorbike trip to Banja Luka

2011-04-07 Thread Luca Capello
Hi all!

Some of you maybe remember that for DebConf7 I travelled from Genève to
Edimburgh with my motorbike and maybe even more of you remember that,
while I did the same for DebConf9, I was not alone, given that Zack and
Roland joined me for an indeed beautiful trip:

For this year DebConf Zack and me are planning to arrive in Banja Luka
again with probably not the best comfort in the world (especially for
your back). Nothing is decided yet and again the two major points are:

- dates

I am quite free for the arrival ride, while I must be in Genève on
Saturday, August 6th, which means that we should leave Banja Luka soon
  after DebConf ends.

- route

The trip distance from Genève is around 1130km with motorways:
Mont-Blanc tunnel, Milano, Venezia, Ljubljana, Zagreb and finally
Banja Luka. This in no way can be completed in a single day. We have
not discussed this in details, but a good option would be at least two
  stops somewhere on the road.

Or we could decide to avoid tolls as much as possible, thus the trip
distance, always from Genève, would be around 1430km: Bern, Zürich,
München, Salzburg, Graz, Maribor and finally Banja Luka. This will
  need at least three stops.

Is anyone else interested?

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Re: [Debconf-discuss] Debian Merchandising

2011-06-14 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

Please note that DebConf, while different, is another Debian event [1],
thus the Events team should be notified of such merchandising stuff, at
least to avoid duplicate efforts like in recent events.

[1]

On Tue, 14 Jun 2011 09:38:17 +0200, Martin Zobel-Helas wrote:

Some of the debian.ch merchandise [2] will be there, at least Debian
SpaceFun/squeeze T-Shirts, foilstickers and white umbrellas [3]. For
the anarchism T-Shirts, I was planning to ask for a Credativ shipment,
instead, because our stock is mostly finished and also because given
that I am travelling by motorcycle [4] I will not have any extra space
for merchandising.

[2]

For the Swiss Army knife we discussed at DebConf10 [5] and I announced
early this year [6], debian.ch finally took contact with Victorinox:
again, it would be very difficult to have them at DebConf11.

[5]
[6]

As a general policy similar to the umbrellas at DebConf10 [7], while the
basic rule is "first arrived, first served", I always prefer to give
precedence to people living far away from the "production" site, mostly
because shipping costs are usually higher for these countries.
Obviously, this is in no way mandatory (even for myself).

[7]

Best,
Luca

I was not thinking about a lot of stuff, something around 10 T-Shirts
for each model for a total of 50 T-Shirts, plus some mugs if they are
still available. This beacuse I would like to avoid any extra costs for
returning the merchandise (either at Credativ or debian.ch, it does not
matter). And also because I do not expcet big sales...

I would say that there is a big difference between selling some T-Shirts

DebConf11 is now two weeks ahead, so it is time to get things done™, so
I would like to:

- know if we plan to have a shop for the Debian Day to plan the
  merchandise needed.

- send debian.ch merchandise at the beginning of the next week, thus I
need a postal address in Banja Luka. Please note that there is a
remote possibility that debian.ch stuff will arrive with someone from
Switzerland, but this is far to be decided, yet.

- order some Credativ merchandise which will must sent to Banja Luka
(AFAIK Alexander Wirt is not coming to DebConf11, but I do not know
for other Credativ guys), thus I need the same postal address as
  above...

Is there any particular detail I should know for the shipments?

Well, it is now a bit too late, according to the Swiss Post it would
take between 4-9 or 7-15 days for a Priority or Economic shipment,
respectively. Given that I will not be able to send anything before
Monday (real life stuff), I do not want to take the risk. The same

[Debconf-discuss] DebConf runners, one year later

2011-07-18 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

After having been infected by the running virus during last year
DebConf10 [1], around 18:00 this afternoon I started my session for
Banja Luka.

[1]

It was not a long run: around 25 minutes, the first one after two-week
rest (diving on a not so-deep river is not really harmless), but
nevertheless I discovered a nice and quite big park on north-east the
venue on Dr. Mladena Stojanovića.

I will try to go running every day, but differently from Christian
(bubulle) I usually do not wake so early in the morning, which means
that I will do that either in the late afternoon before dinner or
mid-evening.

Well, I did not checked the temperature this afternoon, but there were

In the end, I did not look for an automatic one at all, but I went
directly to "A & D" (in Vase Pelagica bb, across the street from "Nova
Bank"), some notes:

1) the lady there *did not* speak any English at all, but actually she
needed one single word from me, my name ("Ime" in Bosnian)

2) the ETA for your laundry is *3* (*THREE*) days, something which
sounds strange, but it happened to myself and Andrew, and given that
the ETA date is printed on the receipt there are no doubts about
   it...

3) you pay when you get your laundry back

There are also two self-service machines on the left at the entrance, at
least I assume so given that you can insert coins in ;-)

The estimated weight is 24 kg, found looking around on the web for some
common hardware:

About the the estimate for shipments, I should say that I did not find a
table with current prices: all the major companies (USPS, DHL, FedEx and
UPS) need to know the sending/receiving postal codes, so I just gave up.

Given that I know that the Swiss Post uses TNT for express delivery, so
I checked the prices there (yes, for once they have worldwide table and
prices). Prices for 30 kg and 100 x 60 x 60 cm within nearby (zone 1)
and island or farther (zone 2) Europe are around 105 and 160 USD for
Priority (up to 10 days) shipment and 85 and 130 USD for Economy (up to
20 days), respectively, including automatic insurance up to 1200 USD,
but electronic equipment are excluded from the liability. NB, the
prices above are for private customers. I have added that to the wiki
page as well:

While we have most of the material here at DebConf, I was unable to find

[Debconf-discuss] DebConf11 Events BoF, do you want to contribute?

2011-07-26 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

It seems that this year's Events BoF will be held in a big room:

This will be the time to discuss how the Events team works in Debian and
why we need such a team when the Publicity/Press team are doing a very
great job in promoting Debian. Yet there are a lot of space for
improvement, as usual ;-)

At the beginning of DebCamp I put up my ToDo list (which obviously was
not completed, but this is another story):

Most of the work is still to be done, especially about restructuring the
event pages and defining a detailed procedure for booth management, but
we are back in business.

I invite anyone interested in such topics to join the discussion, it is
not like there will not be enough space... Any input is appreciated,
especially if you have organized a booth and want to share your
experiences (good or bad, it does not matter, we learn from our errors).

You know who I am ;-) Obviously, I am available for other people, too!

BTW, I would be glad to increase my WoT for the CAcert network as well,
if any other assurer is available.

[Debconf-discuss] DebConf13, minutes for 20110728-1300 meeting

2011-07-28 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

As announced in [1], we held another meeting about DebConf13 today at
13:00 in the same Meeting Room used yesterday here at DebConf11.
As yesterday, here the minutes.

[1] <http://lists.debian.ch/msgid-search/871uxb48z8.fsf%40gismo.pca.it>

Please, if anyone has any corrections, go on!

== Presences ==

The following persons were present, in alphabetical order:

- Alain Schröder (alain)
- Axel Beckert (abe)
- Didier Raboud (odyx)
- Eva Ramon (eva)
- Gaudenz Steinlin (gaudenz)
- Luca Capello (gismo)
- Martin F. Krafft (madduck) (favors a DebConf13 near Germany)
- Philipp Hug (hug)
- Salvatore Bonaccorso (carnil)

== "Committment" Round ==

Given the presence of new people, we evaluated how much time each person
could invest in the organization. Here the details:

- Alain does not have much experience and thus he does not think he can
be on the CoreTeam (CT), but he is willing to find some time to help,
depending on the location. He will probably go to DebConf12 in
  Nicaragua.
- Axel has time-conflicts with another event and he is not sure to be at
DebConf12 in Nicaragua [2]. Moreover, he wants to organize a Mini
DebConf before a full DebConf. He had organized a LUGcamp before and
he wants to self-protect himself from too much work. He has
experiences in setting up websites for other events and he would be
ready to help in this regard.
- Didier has a conflicting project in 2013, he will know more before the
  end of August.
- Eva does not know yet.
- Gaudenz is in Switzerland and he will stay there. While he will not
be able to invest too much time, but he has a good flexibility WRT to
work schedule. He is willing to go helping at DebConf12 in Nicaragua
  if we win the bid.
- Luca will take a year off if Switerland wins the bid. He will go for
  sure to DebConf12 in Nicaragua.
- Martin moved to Germany and he does not want to be in the CT. He is
good ad keepting track of things (e.g. sponsorship or finances).
- Philipp can help, especially WRT to infrastructure/network stuff.
- Salvatore is willing to help, but does not know yet how much he can
  invest.

[2] <http://debconf12.debconf.org/>

Some notes:

[Martin]
- The CT needs 3 to 5 people that can not jump off.
- Backup from the employer is important.
- Time commitment is "more than you think".
- The Global Team handles website stuff.

[Philipp]
- Switzerland has good Internet connectivity.

== Possible Venues ==

Legend: '+' = strong point, '-' = weak point, in parenthesis the person
in charge of checking it.

[general]
* Possible dates include October/November, the other outseason is
  April/May.
* Accommodation is the first problem, then we can ask entities.
* Touristic places could be a problem, we are not the only meeting
happening in Switzerland and we do not have the same budget as bank
meetings, for example, thus we should check smaller places like
Thurgau (Martin) or Neuchatel, Fribourg (but there is no
  accommodation) or Morat (Didier).
* Boarding schools are quite ideal, they do caterings, they have small
rooms, bigger auditoriums, but they have to be empty (Gaudenz will
check the German-speaking part, Luca the French one).
* Mountain towns (e.g. Davos or Zermatt) are nice and everything is
  there (Philipp).
* Youth hostels are another option, too (Didier).
* On the community@ mailing list Giacomo proposed to contact
  MySwitzerland [3] (Luca).

[outside of the cities]
+ Easy to organize.
+ Less expensive.
+ Daytrip to the cities.
- Venues do not really exist.

[universities]
* Basel (Alain)
* Genève (Luca)
* ETH/UniZH (Salvatore with the help of Alain)
* Winthertur?

[Interlaken (Philipp)]
+ Good opening hours for supermarkets.
- Axel was at the LUG-Camp in 2007, that location (dry dock) is not
  suitable for DebConf, though.

[EPFL, Lausanne (Didier)]
+ New conference center ready for 2013.
+ It will include accommodation or hotels near the campus.
+ Reasonable well connected.
+ Big Free Software community which could help and/or assist.
- Need public transportation to go there.
- Lack of accommodation nearby.
- Lack of supermarkets nearby.
- Expensive location.

[CERN, Genève (Luca)]
+ If the location will provide also all side-services it will be OK.

== To Be Done ==

* Sponsoring.
* Content of the presentation [3]
  # Eva, Gaudenz and Philipp will not be there.
  # Luca will take care of preparing it.
* Next meeting should be at the end of August.
  # Gaudenz will organize it on the community@ mailing list.

We thank Didier to have kept record of the minutes.

[Debconf-discuss] DebConf11 Events BoF, report!

2011-08-08 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

Please reply to the debian-publicity@ mailing list [1], it is the
discussion list for anything related to the Events team (R-T and M-F-T
set accordingly), TIA.

[1]

This is the report of the Events BoF [2][3]. I am sorry for the delay,
but the latest days at DebConf11 were quite intense for me, between the
merchandise handling and the proposal for DebConf13 in Switzerland. And
the week after DebConf11 I took a pause and enjoyed RL :-)

[2]
[3]

First of all, the BoF was divided into two parts: I explained again what
the Events team does and where. These were basically the same
information available on the wiki [4] and there were no big surprise
here, except a HUGE remark about (ab)using the email address [5] for
notifications...

[4]
[5]

Then, I moved to the DebConf11 ToDo list [6], which actually got more
attention and people started to interact.

[6]

Most of the people agreed about adding minor events (AKA simple talks)
to the web page [7]: Francesca is already working on it and this should
be fixed soon, also deprecating the "some talks" page [8] (IMHO not so
visible).

[7]
[8]

Speaking of talks, we really need a way to search in the event/talk
list, it is impossible that in 2011 we still oblige our users to go
through yearly subpages.

Just before the BoF Annette told me about the GriCal portal [9]: we
should find a way to work together with them to avoid duplication of
event submissions and sharing of the main events. Francesca, this could
be the F/LOSS "schedule/calendar" we were looking for, not forgetting
the French-speaking "Agenda du Libre" [10]...

[9]
[10]

Another agreement was that those pages, especially the ones related to
setup a booth, need a re-factoring: the best thing would probably be to
send a "Call for Help" on the debian-publicity@ mailing list [1] after
having someway planned how the new pages should be organized. Some work
can be done independently of those pages, like the merchandise stuff,
given that it has its own space on www.d.o [11] (but check #613832
[12]). We should probably move the information on a subpage, which is
also easier to maintain.

[11]
[12]

Before going into details about the booth novelties, let me explain the
two last points.

First, for the mailing list, the idea would be to still use the
already-established debian-events-$SOMETHING [13] mailing list for
coordination, with a "new" mailing list for announcement only (both
minor and major events). This should be a restricted-posting mailing
list (probably Events and Press membership only): its aim is to provide
email notifications whenever a new event is added to the website. A
parallel approach would be to duplicate the announcements on Planet
Debian, but these points must be coordinated with the Publicity team.

[13] $SOMETHING is variable, sometime we have one $LOCALE (-nl), one
$CONTINENT (-eu) and two $SUBCONTINENT (-na and -saff).

Second, the merchandise stuff, something that goes beyond the simple
webpage [11]. Beside its re-organization, we should find a better way
to show what is available *at least* from the Debian Trusted
Organizations [14]. The simplest way would be to have a sort of
"virtual" shop, also useful for booth organization. In an ideal world,
this would be the "complete" stock of all Debian merchandising from
Trusted Organizations, "managed" by the Events team (do not panic,
strong words chosen on purpose). Nothing has been done in this respect
apart from my wishful thinking and discussions with various people,
including the Debian Auditors [15]. Nevertheless, we agreed on using
the events.d.n address [16] for all our tests, as soon as Andreas will
free the DNS entry ;-)

[14]
[15]
[16]

Then, I moved to the main topic and also my primary goal for this
DebConf11: the Debian Events Box [17]. Taking the example from the
GNOME project [18], booth organizers will receive a parcel with all the
*minimal* material for the booth, i.e.:

- 1x demo PC, already configured to run BabelBox [19] and other stuff
- 1x 17" LCD
- 1x keyboard/mouse
- 1x Wi-Fi AP with a 4-port hub, already configured
- 2+ power strips with worldwide adapter
- various network/VGA/USB cables
- 2 Kensington-compatible locks
- lockable cash box
- debian-flyers and other print advertising
- T-Shirts/labels for the booth staff

AFAIK there were discussions and efforts, especially IIRC by Fran Lin
Piat (bcc:ed), about a full re-licensing of the Debian Wiki, but nothing
is finalized yet:

  <http://penta.debconf.org/dc9_schedule/events/365.en.html>
  <http://wiki.debian.org/DebianWiki/LicencingTerms>

It seems that the MIT license was the one with the biggest probability
to be chosen, so you are already "compliant":

With my Events hat on (Events team bcc:ed), I strongly disagree with
*official* documentation available primarily on wikis, because:

1) wikis are for online users and simply leaving opened webpage for the
sake of offline browsing is a non-sense IMHO. With a Debian package
you simply install the package once and for all.

2) there is no way to have *fully* control on wikis, at some point or
another someone can edit a page and thus someone other should fix it.
This is the main advantage of a wiki, but at the same time one of its
   weaknesses.

Remember that my first interest is in documents that should be given to
prospecting sponsors & Co., something like the press coverage services
done by the Publicity team. We should not oblige companies to dig into
wiki pages to find the information they need to evaluate our requests.
Instead, we should provide a 3-page pamphlet of what DebConf is.

And as I see it, documentation of this kind should flow from offline
Debian packages to wikis. Another advantage is that we could translate
this documentation once and for all instead of relying on various
personal translations. I know this is quite a hard task, but I think it
is the right way™.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

[Debconf-discuss] Debconf13 in Vaumarcus, Switzerland bid

2011-12-25 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

This email is a formal bid to organize DebConf13 in Vaumarcus,
Switzerland. You can find all the relevant information on the
appropriate wiki page:

Since the presentation at DebConf11 we regularly met to discuss the
feasibility of the project. Not a single person was the only
responsible from the beginning to the end of the process. On the
contrary, we feel we have succeeded quite well in working as a group.

We ended up choosing Vaumarcus, a small village overlooking the
beautiful lake of Neuchâtel, because of its natural position which fully
represents what Switzerland is known for: lakes and mountains. This
will leave attendees plenty of choice for extra activities. The day trip
(although not yet planned) will focus on opportunities to discover these
surrounding environments. The venue will offer all the necessary
comforts, grouped in a confined space. We have already discussed with
the owners, on how to overcome possible problems, especially related to
the number of attendees and the network connectivity.

The backup plans are of two kinds: on one hand Fiesch and Melchtal, two
options similar to Vaumarcus (camp locations with everything nearby).
On the other hand two well-known cities, Geneva and Zurich, for which
presentations seem superfluous.

We are well aware, that Switzerland is known for its high cost of
living. Yet we are confident, that various sponsors will help us
organize DebConf13 at good value for all participants.

On behalf of the team.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

I would have preferred to have *all* replies to debconf-discuss@ as
well, I know of at least one of them that went to debian-project@ alone
(and no, I do not want to subscribed to yet another mailing list).

Nevertheless, I think my biggest achievement during past DebConfs is the
DebConf11 Events BoF, which generated a lot of discussion on various
mailing lists (debian-publicity@ and debian-www@ in primis) and in RL,
and it was the beginning for the Debian Events Box creation (which is
progressing slowly, but still...):

Both were real achievements and in both cases "external" people were
surprised: the Atlantic Ocean was freezing (IIRC ~7°C), but still some
DebConfers went out of the hotel with towels, while at the Van Cortlandt

[Debconf-discuss] DebConf13 Logo Contest

2012-06-05 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

Please reply to the DebConf13-localteam@ mailing list, R-T and M-F-T set
accordingly.

The DebConf13 organizers are in the process of creating the logo for the
next-year DebConf and we encourage everyone to participate. Some ideas
are already present on the DebConf wiki [DC13-logo], but we would like
to expand a bit more our vision: we want DebConf13 to be remembered as a
great technical/social period spent with friends in a natural
environment [DC13-vision].

[DC13-logo]
[DC13-vision]

Here is a summary of the graphic design elements needed for DebConf13:

- A logo that works in small and large scale, in color as well as black
and white, and that is recognisable as the logo of the DebConf in
Vaumarcus, Switzerland (like the DebConf10 logo [DC10-logo] which is
easily recognised as the New York DebConf logo). The logo must
include the Debian swirl [D-swirl], albeit variants of the Debian
swirl are accepted and welcomed whenever they are peculiar to the
location or the DebConf itself (other than the already-cited DebConf10
  logo [DC10-logo], see the DebConf6 [DC6], DebConf7 [DC7] or
  DebConf9 [DC9-logo] logos).

- Typeface and layout grids / suggestions for communication material
such as cover letters, documentation sheets, website, sponsor banners
(similar to the DebConf12 ones [DC12-artwork]), stickers, T-Shirts,
  bags.

This would ideally include 3 header hierarchies (h1, h2, h3), standard
text for paragraphs, separator and quotation elements.

- A colour chart of what colours to use where (backgrounds, headers,
  logo, boxes...).

[DC10-logo]
[D-swirl]
[DC6]
[DC7]
[DC9-logo]
[DC12-artwork]

The logo is the most important part and is mandatory, while the two
other can be finalised later on based on the logo itself. This means
that we also accept submissions with the logo alone.

The deadline for the DebConf13 submission is Sunday, June 17th: feel
free to add your proposal (SVG preferred and including the license) to
the wiki [DC13-logo].

The final logo will be chosen during the next meeting of the DebConf13
organization team on Monday, June 18th, in Bern [DC13-next].

[Debconf-discuss] cdn.debian.net pointing at .mit.edu mirror from DC12 connections

2012-07-02 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

My annual DebConf report, knowing that network setup is not finished:

Here at UCA, cdn.d.n is pointing at mirrors in:

* the USA (yesterday and today, dc12 Wi-Fi, IP 172.30.36.137, not really
useful because of the half-working Wi-Fi)
=
root@gismo:/etc# host cdn.debian.net
cdn.debian.net is an alias for deb.cdn.araki.net.
deb.cdn.araki.net has address 128.30.2.36
deb.cdn.araki.net has address 64.50.236.52

root@gismo:/etc# host 128.30.2.36

root@gismo:/etc# host 64.50.236.52
52.236.50.64.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer ftp-chi.osuosl.org.
=

* the official Debian mirror in Chile (1 hour ago, wired network)
=
root@gismo:/etc# ping -c 1 cdn.debian.net
PING deb.cdn.araki.net (200.75.30.181) 56(84) bytes of data.

root@gismo:/etc# host ftp.cl.debian.org
ftp.cl.debian.org has address 200.75.30.181
=

* but never the Debian mirror at UCA (which despite ping's error works
fine via apt-get when on wired network)
=
root@gismo:/etc# ping -c 1 debian.uni.edu.ni
PING debian.uni.edu.ni (165.98.4.80) 56(84) bytes of data.

root@gismo:/etc# apt-cache policy | grep edu.ni

First question: as I asked previous DebConfs, would it be possible to
point cdn.debian.net to the internal mirror ("todo va", I am not in a
hurry)?

Second question not related to DebConf12: is the current setup OK or it
should be adjusted WRT the UCA mirror?

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Thank you for the correction, I still miss some "local" information ;-)

I talked with Rene about that as well and I perfectly agree for
ftp*.d.o, but after having thought about that I fear that cdn.d.n will
not be affected :-(

Anyway, until the internal mirror is not ready, this is vaporware.

You were right, I was testing a wheezy installation via d1_alpha1 amd64
CD-1 plus debian.uni.edu.ni and I got "Encountered a section with no
Package: header" for Translation-* files. I then switched to
cdn.debian.net (which resolved to 200.75.30.181) and the installation
finished (slowly) fine.

Just forget my request for debian.uni.edu.ni, then :-)

Thx, bye,

[Debconf-discuss] [MERCHANDISE] Black umbrellas and SpaceFun/squeeze T-Shirts

2012-07-04 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

The rainy season seems to have arrived in Managua as well, so the Debian
Jacket will be quite useful:

However, if you did not order it and you still want to protect yourself,
there are some black Debian umbrellas available in the hacklab.

Moreover, if your Debian T-Shirt collection is still missing it, there
are black and blue SpaceFun/squeeze T-Shirts, too.

Pictures of the two items are available at:

Please look for me (the bearded kilted guy) before 2012-07-09 (Monday).

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

The umbrellas finished, "thanks" to the rainy season ;-)

I still have some.

And with my first email I forgot to add that I also have *one* Debian
Swiss Army Knife, a black CyberTool 29:

Actually, there is still one white available, if I will not be there
anymore ask it to cate.

Still available: 1 blue M, 1 blue L and 3 black L.

The above, according to my recordings, means that 2 black M are missing
or, if you want to read it correctly, they have been stolen. If anyone
knows something or took/sold them, can she/he simply tell me (even
*anonymously*), so at least I know that I am not going crazy [1]?

[1] I checked three different times, both my recordings and the
T-Shirts, just to be sure that it is not an error from my side.

[Debconf-discuss] Early thanks for DebConf12

2012-07-12 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

As some of you probably noticed, I left DebConf12 early and arrived
safely at home after a 24-hour/3-airplane/1-train travel.

I would like to thanks everyone for very nice time spent there and this
time especially the localteam: Norman, Felix, Fernanda, Diana, Rodrigo,
Gema, Alfonso, Leandro, Aura, $ANYONE_I_HAVE_FORGOT. I followed the
DebConf12 preparation and I had the chance to be there before DebCamp
started (very nice hospitality) and thus witnessed the late stress.

You guys rocked, even when some of us where start to panic: MANY THANKS.

Thx, bye,

I was not there, so take this for future reference.

I would have objected to this kind of keysigning for the last part,
because it means that people who does not have a computer capable of
"wireless" power (i.e. no AC power) can not participate. And this was
the case for DebConf12 for me: my 4-year-old X60 extended battery died
just before leaving Europe and thus I was "wired" as much as I could.
And, for obvious reasons, I do not trust any computer who does not
belong to me for everything which is OpenPGP/TLS.

I am for any kind of experiment for keysigning, but can we please
announce them *before* any DebCamp/DebConf?

It was really sad for me to read such a reply when I simply asked for
beforehand announcements of the procedure in the quote you missed:

And just to be clear: I do not need my key signed, but as I did in an
ad-hoc manner at DebConf12 I am happy to improve the Web of Trust.
