Having said that, have made a crude page at https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf16/DebianDay_Hardware Most of the contestants are from https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn Apart form the wired and wireless routers, there have been these smartwatches and all which probably also could be made to work. There is also the short-lived debian-mobile mailing list https://lists.debian.org/debian-mobile/ after which I think a decision was made to put more efforts on getting android bits in Debian main, probably because most upstream may not be active. Even if we can have a showcase of Android variants like Replicant and f-droid and conversations around them, that might get some interest going and I'm sure most DD's would have one or the other device which has them. The same would be of most GNU/Linux groups as well. If we are able to get some tablets hands-on even those will be good. Incidentally, I'm planning to buy a new phone (around $100 - $125) budget, so any recommendations to look at which is/could be ported to Debian would be good to know. @Jonas - recommendations ? -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

Jonas is also a purist, which is great, but I think in this context and with the time limit, we need to look at what is agreeable without being too ideological. Have a look at the ShowMeBox stuff, Jonas and others did a lot of work there. Unfortunately the ShowMeBox as it is currently envisaged may not make it to DebConf16, but this idea may incorporate some of it. https://wiki.debian.org/ShowMeBox > > Having said that, have made a crude page at > https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf16/DebianDay_Hardware > > Most of the contestants are from https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn > > Apart form the wired and wireless routers, there have been these > smartwatches and all which probably also could be made to work. Android bits in main won't fix that, but it will eventually allow us to build Android apps on our laptops and potentially run Android apps on our Debian laptops. https://wiki.debian.org/AndroidTools > Incidentally, I'm planning to buy a new phone (around $100 - $125) > budget, so any recommendations to look at which is/could be ported to > Debian would be good to know. @Jonas - recommendations ? Due to various factors, making a phone support Debian properly will require more time than it takes that phone to become obsolete. Of course you can easily get any Android phone that is GPL compliant to run some parts of Debian in a very hacky way. https://wiki.debian.org/ChrootOnAndroid http://bonedaddy.net/pabs3/log/2012/12/03/debian-mobile/ https://cascardo.eti.br/blog/GNU_on_Smartphones_part_II/ https://wiki.debian.org/Mobile -- bye, pabs https://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

No, the Debian experts on embedded stuff are the emdebian folks! > Jonas is also a purist, which is great, but I think in this context > and with the time limit, we need to look at what is agreeable without > being too ideological. But you will also need to be realistic. My biggest concern with the things mentioned by Shirish is not how challenging those devices are to tinker with using purely Debian, but how challenging they are to tinker with _at_ _all_. - Jonas P.S. Incidentally, I will attend a haccker session this weekend with the GTA04 developers - i.e. the successor to OpenMoko. No, that doesn't make me an expert on that device: I offer help _packaging_ the code for the device. -- * Jonas Smedegaard - idealist & Internet-arkitekt * Tlf.: +45 40843136 Website: http://dr.jones.dk/ [x] quote me freely [ ] ask before reusing [ ] keep private signature.asc Description: signature ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

That may be true of /mainstream/ mobile devices. But the Nokia N900 shipped in 2009 with a Debian-derived OS, and even this year I see recent commits to mainline Linux kernel and debian-installer for that device. If it's possible to run pure Debian on these devices now, that may be the sort of thing that Shirish wanted to showcase? Jonas mentioned Openmoko and GTA04 already. The Pyra handheld (with LTE modem) by Dragonbox likely won't ship until after DebConf16, but the OS being developed for it is a very clean Debian armhf rootfs. Maybe someone could bring a PocketCHIP to DebConf, if those ship anytime soon. Before having an N900, I had a Sharp Zaurus clam-shell handheld (which is not a phone), but pure Debian could be installed on that too IIRC. Debian has for a long time been a good alternative OS for handhelds, it is just rare that they ship with 'pure' Debian preinstalled (for even a quite liberal definition of pure). Ack, but I'm not sure potential users would be convinced by Debian running on a 7 year old mobile device from before the iPhone era (keyboard instead of finger-oriented) with no warranty and a known to be brittle USB socket. Smartphone users I know are unwilling to even use Android due to software quality, them switching to an OS they have never heard of on non-mainstream devices seems like it will never happen. > Jonas mentioned Openmoko and GTA04 already. These devices are created by people somewhat related to the FLOSS world, so it makes sense that they would work on upstreaming Linux/bootloader support for them. The Pyra looks almost perfect but has PowerVR and won't have the same modem isolation/monitoring as the Neo900. I am really looking forward to the Neo900 existing (sigh PowerVR) but I'm not sure I will be able to afford it and many laptops are cheaper than it. > Before having an N900, I had a Sharp Zaurus clam-shell handheld (which > is not a phone), but pure Debian could be installed on that too IIRC. > Debian has for a long time been a good alternative OS for handhelds, it > is just rare that they ship with 'pure' Debian preinstalled (for even a > quite liberal definition of pure).
