Hi,

Can you please let me know whether GSoC students who have got sponsorship,
have to follow same procedure for reimbursement?

[Debconf-discuss] Group photo *today* at 16:00

2015-08-18 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
Just another reminder via another channel - today we will be taking the
group photo of Debconf15. It promises to be the largest yet, so make sure
to be there and help make that as large as possible!

Please gather in the grass behind the Heidelberg talk rooms (also know as
the stonehedge area) as soon as talks finish. The talkmeisters will be
instructed to finish them no later than 15:50.

Please be in the talk rooms or near them around that time to catch the wave
of people. If you go to your room or to a quiet hacklab or to some other
insulated corner of the venue it is almost guaranteed that you will miss
the group photo.

Unfortunately this year it is basically impossible to patch in any
latecomers into the photo, due to location and timing constrains, so make
sure to be there and be there in time!

Also - please keep movement to a minimum while the group photo is being
taken. One thing that creates a lot of manual work every year is people
turning their heads during the process - stitching software does not
understand that, you just end up a two headed monster. We average 12-15
such heads every year :D. Takes hours to fix.

It is likely to be 21C outside, please consider that you might have to
stand there for 20 minutes. If you can get cold, then put on something a
bit warmer right now. There will be not time to change then.

Yes indeed, it starts in 20 minutes. It was moved to allow people who

[Debconf-discuss] Update: Schedule for mobile now always up to date :)

2015-08-18 Thread Daniel Maslowski
Hi everyone,

I have updated the service a bit. First of all the memorizable link for
people who don't have it yet: bit.do/debconf15schedule

The very good news is: The schedule is **always up to date** now - yay!
The server regularly fetches the XML export from Summit (every 5 mins)
thanks to a cron job. But even better: The app in the web browser also
reloads the data every 5 minutes. It will silently refresh in the
background. If that doesn't succeed, you will still have the old data
until you have internet access again, so you can still use it offline.

The sources are on GitHub: https://github.com/orangecms/conf-schedule

If you like, feel free to fork and send PRs. Feedback is always welcome!

Current issues:
- long session names make the page scroll horizontally (I'm on it :D)
- grouping by time not yet implemented (I now have an idea for that ;))

Enjoy the rest of the conference and thanks everyone :)
Daniel

[Debconf-discuss] Multiarch/Crossbuilding/Bootstrapping/Toolchains minisprint agenda

2015-08-18 Thread Wookey
The Multiarch/Crossbuild/Bootstrap/Toolchain minisprint
is from 11:00 to 16:00 today (in Stockholm). We have split it up into sections
so
that if you are only interested in some aspect (e.g crossbuilding) you
can come at a relevant time.

I hope this more-or-less works for people.

The schedule entry has been updated with info:
https://summit.debconf.org/debconf15/meeting/239/multiarch-bootstrap-crossbuilding/

But the summary is:

Multiarch issues 11:00-12:30
Lunch 12:30-13:00
Crossbuilding 13:00-15:00
Crosstoolchains 15:00-16:00

Several things cross these boundaries but we will do our best to keep
the discussion somewhat segmented.

The Multiarch part will be somewhat abstruse, and primarily of
interest to those working on relevant tools, but for the
Crossbuilding/tolchain parts input from anyone who is actually using
these tools is very welcome whilst we talk about what still needs
work.

The gobby doc is now the definitive agenda:
gobby.debian.org in the path
debconf15/bof/Multiarch-Crossbuilding-Bootstrap-Toolchains

Some questions about fields on the form:
 - What's supposed to go into "Contact"? The form already contains my

 - Is there something supposed to go in the "reason" field besides

The reason why I haven't chosen someone for dc15 yet is: I would love
to have one of the kids doing that. But that's something that has to be
negotiated with their parents, if they are fine with that idea. So if
you have kids around who you are fine with having in such a photo, and
think they might want to do it, please get in touch with me NOW.
Otherwise I'll randomly choose someone else.

Also, the photo will be taken in close approximation with the regular
group photo, so either wear that shirt to the group photo directly, or
at least have it around for being able to put it on probably afterwards
and stay around for that special photo!

Thanks to all who volunteered for that!

No, it isn't. Booting grub from the EFI system partition works just fine
here, however, you might need to use the "bless" utility within OSX to
get grub to boot by default. (The latter could be obsolete information.)

[Side note: I only keep OSX around so that I can get firmware updates,

[Debconf-discuss] Karaoke

2015-08-18 Thread martin f krafft
Apparently karaoke went to 7:00 this morning. Good job. Hopefully
nobody was annoyed, but the doors should have been closed and the
volume kept at a reasonable level.

The set is available all week and you're free to set it up and start
using it *but not before events in Berlin&London have ended*.

Also, when done for the night, ensure that the set is tidily put
away without obstructing the door, or else the video team will get
very sad.

Enjoy,

if you are really into this plugin better grab it from the repository with
apt install xul-ext-downthemall :)

I put together a little script that generates a rss feed for the videos
http://104.219.184.171/grab.urls.sh

Im using it successfully to import the videos. You can find the RSS feed
generated here
http://104.219.184.171/debconf15-video.xml

And finally, a shameless plug from the debconf-subtitling team...

Its a way to watch the videos while contributing and it really helps
learning about what is being said during the the talk.

There are many people that have trouble following spoken english, specially
with thick accents, but have no problem reading them :)

Subtitling/translation to help making the videos available to more people
Is a way to thank the hard work of the video team. Even doing only a few
minutes is appreciated

Just head to our irc channel #debconf-subs and say hi or check out our wiki

[Debconf-discuss] SCAP security guide and tools BoF (automatic verification of security configuration)

2015-08-18 Thread Frank Lin PIAT
BoF at 14:00 in room Madrid !

Short:
Debian doesn't provide a security guide in SCAP format, let's fix that.

Long:
SCAP guides are really nice for users because it's really easy
"audit" (evaluate) one or many systems. Also, SCAP security guides can
contain multiple profiles (Server, Desktop, Virtualisation Host...).
Those profiles can further be customized by the user: enable/disable
some checks, adjust threshold...

The XML results can be also be converted in some nice HTML file with
explanation, reference and remediation hints. The XML file could even be
used for automatic remediation.

In this BoF, I would like to discuss with interested parties on what
should be done, how to do it, what should be supported, etc.

I have grabbed some ideas/todo/pitfalls on this wiki pages:

[Debconf-discuss] Best bus to get to Hbf with luggage?

2015-08-18 Thread Henrique de Moraes Holschuh

Does any of the bus lines near jugenherbergue go to the Hbf without the
need to change buses?

I know how to get there using two buses but it would be nice to avoid
that when leaving with luggage...

Usually line 32 will take you to the Hbf. Some buses that are marked
specifically on the timetable with a 'B' to indicate that they only go
to Bismarkplatz though.

[Debconf-discuss] Anybody willing to hold an ad-hoc translators skillshare BoF?

2015-08-18 Thread Andreas Tille
Hi,

I'm not a translator and thus can not mentor my friend Minh from
Vietnam. She needs some basic introduction into the Debian tools that
might be helpful to do translations. I would welcome if some people
could settle in one room and share some skills since I assume there
might be more people in a similar situation.

I would volunteer to find a room and a time if I might get some
positive response.

Thanks for considering

Will the "lunch bags" include the possibility to fill bottles? At least for

Bismarckplatz is on the other side of the route. Any 32 from the

Well, I got a 32 in front of the venue and it stopped at an end-of-line
stop where you must leave the bus before it got to Hbf...

I had a lot more luck with 31 (to get to Bismarckplazt).

Today it might be a little bit challenging, but we can probably
get this done Thursday or Friday, the main challenge is to find
some time, as Thursday we have the conference dinner, and Friday
there are some activities I'm already scheduled.

We might be able to do it Wednesday after the day trip... but

Looking at
http://fahrplanauskunft.vrn.de/vrn/TTB/EFA10-3_7732_TP.pdf
there are indeed a few runs in a day that end at "Betriebshof". From
there, however, the main station is within walking distance.

[Debconf-discuss] FPGA firmware hacking?

2015-08-18 Thread Tim Ansell
Hi,

Is anyone interested in developing FOSS firmware for FPGAs? If so, I have a
whole bunch of FPGA development boards with me at DebConf for people to
play with. I have roughly 5-6 boards of different shapes and sizes with
both Xilinx and Altera boards. Should we set up a hacking area to get some
stuff done?

Getting started with FPGAs can be quite daunting because a lot of the stuff
is still "in the stone age" but I'm happy to help people get through the
hurdles. Sadly, at the moment FPGA development does require the use of
proprietary tools but there are some smart people working on solving that
problem -
http://hackaday.com/2015/07/28/open-source-fpga-toolchain-builds-cpu/.

My main interest in developing FOSS firmware for FPGAs is to develop fully
open source video capture hardware for live streaming of user groups and
FOSS conferences like DebConf (the main reason I'm here at DebConf is to
chat with your video team). The project is called the hdmi2usb.tv and is
part of a larger video capturing project called TimVideos (see
code.timvideos.us).

Looking forward to doing some coding with you all!

[Debconf-discuss] Help with packaging stuff from TimVideos project (including FOSS hardware firmware)

2015-08-18 Thread Tim Ansell
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had the time to help me figure out the correct
way to package my TimVideos project components to get included in Debian? A
list of things we are trying to package can be found at
https://github.com/timvideos/streaming-system/wiki/Debian-Packaging.

I've never been very good at doing packaging myself and quite a few of the
projects have complicated dependencies that I don't really know how to deal
with.

For example,
 * The fpgalink tool has a custom tool chain and needs to cross compile
firmware for the 8051.
 * How to deal with our port of flumotion to gstreamer 1.0 when upstream is
"dead".
 * One project needs a gcc compiled with support for the lm32 processor.

Thanks for your help!

I admit I like your route and I would join it under normal physical
conditions but there are people (including me currently who prefer some
more relaxed bicycling). Since it seems that the bicycle-sharing does
not work out we need to rent some bicycles first. The bicycle rental
is at the railway station and opens at 10:00. So it might make sense
to start at 10:00+time_to_rent bikes at the railwaystation - at least
for those who like to join the "more relaxed tour".

Thomas Lange by chance went the tour that is vaguely in my mind via
the castle, following a suggested bicycle trail through the wood to
Neckargmünd and go back on the other side of the Neckar.

This short trip leaves a lot time for sightseeing under way. Please
also make sure you bring your swimming suits. If I find something
to jump in under way I'll do so. :-)

See you tomorrow

  Andreas.

BTW: If you confirm you will join we might consider waiting if you
are a bit later. If you not confirm nobody will wait for you.

I am sure something like this can be worked out with your bus
master.

Just be aware that we have a Barbeque at the venue instead of
dinner, so don't miss out. Also, there's more entertainment tonight:

I have a BoF from 18:00-18:45. I'd be fine if we settle at 20:00 in
some spare room (Stockholm might be empty). Is this OK for other
people? I would join as well but I'm not particularly helpful.

Thanks Felipe for volunteering - that's very appreciated

[Debconf-discuss] Interviewing people on their todo / task list workflows

2015-08-18 Thread Lynoure Braakman

Do you have a list of things you want to do? Maybe even multiple? In some
software tool?

If yes, I want to interview you on your workflow!

I am aiming to figure out the various ways people track their tasks and
projects in private lives and in work, and thus improve my own workflow,
and to bring interesting ways of managing those to taskwarrior community
in form of a series of blog posts.

If you use _any_ software tool for your todo list and think you could spare
the ~30min this takes before Saturday morning, please contact me directly.

Thanks for the pointer it is actually quite similar to what I
considered. However, I would definitely go into the opposite direction.
This would mean the hilly part in the begining so we see whether
everybody will manage or whether we should rather find an alternative
route instead.

So if you agree with the start at 10:00+x from railway station condition
and go in direction castle first we could go together. In case the
castle "climb" might show serious problems for some attendees we could
split up groups again.

Kind regards

  Andreas.

I would not recommend this if you're just riding it once; climbing
Konigstuhl from the west has far more vehicular traffic, is a narrower
road, inferior scenery, and is also uncomfortably steeper.

Thanks for the hint. Lets discuss this with the potential attendees. I
*personally* would agree but we do not know the physical constitution of
all participants and may be the decide against Königstuhl at all.

I see no efficient way to discuss this via mail.

[Debconf-discuss] My comments on "Debian in corporate IT" bof

2015-08-18 Thread Amey Abhyankar
Hello all,

It was pretty interesting session. Thanks for organizing this bof.

I have few comments/suggestions as follows:-

* Can we/Do we take feedback from sponsors about their Debian specific
requirements/issues in general?

* Corporate/Business user avoids to post at public mailing lists using
their corporate e-mail address to prevent from getting spammed. And also to
save himself from spreading his corporate signature along with sensitive
information like office address, office phone number etc. How can we address
that issue? [Remember 'out of office' replies at mailing lists sometimes?
;-) ]

* Are we interested or do we already address issues (proactively) of SMB's
& large corporate customers where deployment/scaling of Debian os happens
in hundred & thousands of volume?

* Can their be a dedicated team to respond queries (Debian specific) of IT
folks (inc CTO,CIO's) from corporate/business space where they deal with
Debian OS in a complex env side by side with other Linux operating systems
& applications?

Lastly yes I am keeping in mind that Debian is a community driven universal
operating system & we do not talk in commercial/business language :-)

Thanks & regards,
Amey [India]

I count 12 people, so we can have two or more groups.

There was one demand and one offer => mission accomplished.

But 10:00 is OK, so we'll meet 10:00 in the lobby.

Good night

[Debconf-discuss] Bike trip starts at 10:00 *** at the railway station ***

2015-08-18 Thread Andreas Tille
Hi,

because some people assumed we start at 10:00 at the youth hostel: This
is wrong. The bike rental inside the railway station opens at 10:00 and
we want to be the first fetching the bikes. The trip starts once the
last of us has fetched a proper bike.

Its the turn of the people without a bike to decide when to start here.
(I have no idea about the bus options since I do not need a bus.)

See you

  Andreas.

Nothing changed, then.

In 2004, I got myself a PowerBook; OSX updates broke yaboot more than
once. Apparently, apple hasn't changed in that regard...

My recommendation would be to throw out OSX if you're going to use
Debian. You could run OSX in a VM (that's legal, as long as the host
hardware is made by apple) if you don't want to part with it.
