I'll be using some orange Debconf bags to transport stuff. To people
who come to the "cheese trips" at HH+45 today, please try to come with
something to pack your stuff during the walk to havemeyer building and

I have (sort of) experience, especially with the OpenPGP smartcard

FWIW, I managed to get Google Calendar to import the ical file by
modifying it (removing the TZID specs from the timestart/stop fields).

Is it possible to get that change made to the master version? It will
be much nicer to subscribe to it so my calendar is updated every day.

Well, if the schedule is updated, that won't help. Rather, here are the
instructions:

  wget http://penta.debconf.org/dc10_schedule/schedule.en.ics
  sed -i -e 's/;TZID=EDT//' schedule.en.ics

The TZID is already present as a separate field, so we don't lose (I
think) the timezone information (for my calendar which is currently set
to EDT it worked nice).

I don't know much about the ical format, so maybe I did something
stupid. But it worked for me :)

Hi, folks. This fix to the ical version of the schedule suggested by

currently has with korganizer. Is it possible that we could make this

I've updated the ruby controller that generates the ical and it removed
most of the TZID fields. I did notice one instance remaining at the end
of the file:

BEGIN:VTIMEZONE
TZID:EDT
TZNAME:America/New_York

Temperatures in the late afternoon are currently really quite

What would be better is if you can set a
TZID=/softwarestudio.org/Tzfile/America/New_York on each event, replacing
the previous, invalid TZID=EDT. (TZID=America/New_York may also be
sufficient, I don't know.) I believe the ical file you have currently is
/correct/, but it appears gnome clock-applet does not manage to process this
VTIMEZONE data (even though evolution itself does).

This has been scheduled now, but for 477 CSB, as 414 Schapiro was
already full (and the wiki asked for 477 CSB anyway). Please let me

[Debconf-discuss] Debconf runners: report from the Aug 2nd run to GWB

2010-08-02 Thread Christian PERRIER
In short, going to George Washington Bridge is a good way to have a
nice scenery view of Manhattan.

So, 8 people gathered together this morning: Marga and Maxy, Roberto
Sanchez, Iustin Pop, Tim Retout, Gaudenz Steilin, Noèl Köthe and /me.

I screwed up slightly by trying to go down to the Hudson Greenway
immediately from Riverside Av. while it is not possible until 130th
St. or soso we ended up doing more ups and downs in the beginning,
including going through a wild path that was leading
nowhere. Apologies to fellow runners for this.

On the route to there, we unfortunately saw Marga and Maxy being
forced to wave us bye after a few kms, mostly because of this hard
start. Sorry, guys...and I hope you had fun anyway, as well as some
nice views of Hudson River.

The remaining 6 of us then went along the Greenway north to
GWB. Thankfully, Noèl already went there and he could sort out the
tricky labyrinth of streets to climb up to the bridge and then enter
the walway along the road.

Though quite noisy because of those damn cars, the view from the
bridge is quite awesome as one can see the entire Western part of
Manhattan up to the southmost part.

IMHO, that view is probably great at night. Can be a good place to go
on evenings after sunset by going north in train 1 up to 175th St then
walk 1 mile or 2 west through 177th St..

We crossed the bridge thenwent back..:-)

We apparently all managed to come back safe from this trip to Wild
Northern Manhattan and ended up having run something like 17km,
according to Noèl's Garmin (mine was driving me crazy by contantly
rebooting and didn't record anything...crap).

Tomorrow's run is likely to feature a visit to Central Park,
again. Slow pace and shorter distance will be the rule. Reaching the
Reservoir will be the goal, to enjoy the great NYC scenery from there...

PS: Noèl and I might have crazy ideas for the Day Trip. Going to Coney
Island by running seems to be a *too crazy* idea (the distance is
over 20 miles)but goign down Manhattant to Brooklyn Bridge, cross
it over and then catch a train there should be feasible.:)

Done.

Daniel, would you mind moving the event to 17:30-21:00? The race of
course doesn't last for so long but, including the journey and a
possible something locally after the race, I'd rather give a right
time schedule And the start time would rather be 17:30 so that
even by being late by 5-10 minutes, we wouldn'tbe too in a hurry to be
on time in Van Cortlandt for 18:30 (the train ride is about 20-30
minutes from my experience on Sat...not including train waiting time).

Although the pentabarf conference management system employed has the
capability, which we've made use of in years past, to expose people's travel
information on an opt-in basis, this has not been made available this year
for reasons that are absolutely opaque to me as an attendee. If you want
people to know you're here, you can opt in to listing yourself on
; to
find other people who have already arrived, you can query the 'DCschedule'
bot on the #debconf IRC channel on OFTC; for people who have not yet arrived
(which represents a rapidly diminishing proportion as the week wears on), or
to see a whole list of attendees, you're SOL.

[Debconf-discuss] Invitation to try amateur radio

2010-08-02 Thread John Goerzen
Hi folks,

I've made some contacts with random[1] New Yorkers here on amateur radio
bands, from the campus of Columbia.

I have a handheld radio with me that works on several amateur radio
bands. If any of you are interested in using it to see who you might
talk to -- and who knows how many or few you'll find -- I'll be happy to
schedule a time where we can do that. Note that it will need to be
outdoors due to signal propagation needs.

There are some local repeater networks, and you can essentially talk
with one or many people across a large part of New York state, New
Jersey, and perhaps some surrounding states from a simple handheld here.

It is normally not legal to transmit on amateur bands unless you have a
license, but if the transmitter is being directly supervised by a
licensed ham that is physically present, those rules are relaxed.

There are quite a few digital modes that radio amateurs are involved in.
Debian has pretty good support for this. Alas, I lack the proper
cable for my handheld (which I may rectify if there is a suitable store
nearby). Digital amateur modes are pretty nifty, and range from
anything from simple low-bps radioteletype all the way to TCP over
radio. Some of these digital modes can be used across continents with
*no* intervening infrastructure other than your radio and the recipient's.

As someone else said, Amateur Radio and Free Software have somewhat
similar mindsets. Amateur is the only radio service I'm aware of that
permits and encourages licensees to build their own radios and develop
their own modes of communication.

-- John

[1] Well, somewhat random; the people you talk too have all passed a
(not too difficult) licensing exam. It's like Usenet before the Eternal
September and the flamewars. On second thought, it's not like Usenet at
all ;-)

[Debconf-discuss] Rent and ride a bike

2010-08-02 Thread Thomas Lange
I just want to share my experiences with renting a bike.

I went to 96th street at broadway to West Side Bicyles. Got a nice
bike but without a bike lock. They said, I would not need it, since the
bike would get stolen anyway, if I would leave it outside and go into
the cinema or somewehre else. So I had to purchase a lock, since I
wanted to have the bike for more than a day.

Riding a bike in New York is fun. I had no problems with the amount of
cars in the city nor with cars driving close to me. IMO it's a very
nice way to see a lot of places in NY, without walking to much or
always using the metro. For me, the best way of transportation.

I rented the bike for one day and 5 hours, but they charged me less
for less time. I had to pay 78$ roughly.
Locking the bike in front of carman over night also worked well - the
bike didn't disappeared :-)

The only obstacle^Wchallenge for me was, that the streets here are
more steep than in Cologne, where they are just flat.

If someone needs a bike lock for renting a bike, just contact me, you
can borrow mine for free.

Re: [Debconf-discuss] Debian Merchandise BoF?

2010-08-02 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

These is a report of the Merchandise BoF at DebConf10:

  http://penta.debconf.org/dc10_schedule/events/683.en.html
  http://wiki.debian.org/Merchandise/BoFDebConf10

First of all, thank you to anyone who attended the BoF, it was not only
interested, but also fun to discuss about the different ideas people had
to promote Debian through merchandise.

On Sun, 2010-08-01 at 12:29 -0400, Luca Capello wrote:
> BTW2, should this be discussed in a more general mailing list? I have
> just realized that there is no general debian-events@ mailing list, so I

I cc:ed the debian-publicity@ mailing list because during the meeting we
decided that the best place to continue discussing about merchandise
should be the Debian Marketing Team ,
which mailing list is... debian-public...@! Before any flame, please
read the *full* mail, thanks in advance.

This very same mail will also be included in the BoF wiki page, if you
need to add something it would be better to both reply to this mail and
update the wiki page if the information belongs to the report as well.

Here we go!

> I have also created a DebConf10-specific wiki page for stuff to be
> discussed during the BoF:
>
> http://wiki.debian.org/Merchandise/BoFDebConf10

I think the best thing is to simply go through the different points.

1) general situation, who has what

Basically, this is already covered in the Wiki merchandise page I create
before the BoF . There are mainly 4
different "entities" with merchandise stuff (Alexander Wirt, Debian
Brasil, debian.ch and Debian UK), plus Adrian von Bidder (umbrellas) and
Anto Recio & Holger Levsen (wine). I vaguely remember someone
(Luciano?) pointed out that something was missing, in that case please
fill in the wiki page and put a note in the report on the BoF page.

It should be stressed out that not all of the merchandise present there
is actually available. My idea was to have a general overview of what
we had, have and could have. I do not think we need at this point a
more specific list, since I am quite sure the common (and well-selling)
merchandise (T-Shirts and foilstickers) is usually renewed/reproduced.

2) status of the official Debian merchandise page

Given that Debian itself does not sell any merchandise, it was clear
that we should not put any "direct" link on this page, i.e. no links to
the non-commercial organizations.

However, since "the information below is provided as a favor to our
loyal users", it was also clear that we should provide a link to a
non-commercial merchandise page, where our loyal users can find what is
available and how to buy it. This can be the same wiki page of point 1)
above or another one, but it would be better not to have it hosted on
www.d.o, thus anyone can easily modify it.

We discussed shortly about the merchand...@debian.org address, but we
were not able to find out who actually receives this mail, thus we stop
at this point. IMHO this address should be the primary resource for any
merchandise question, being it official/commercial or for booth/event
preparation.

3) sort of HowTo for booth people to complement the DebianEventsHowto

Thanks to the work done by I guess the Debian Publicity Team, we already
have a quite exhaustive wiki page
. While in this page I have
already added a link to the merchandise wiki page, this is not enough.
Instead, we should complement that page (or create a new one) with
specific information on how to request/manage/return the merchandise.

Following the BoF, I had a discussion with Carl Chenet (together with
Xavier Oswald organizer of the Debian booth at the recent RMLL in
Bordeaux ) and Zack: we ended up with a possible
workflow. Please bear in mind that nothing has been decided yet, on the
contrary everything must be discussed with the different teams involved
(Marketing, Publicity and Events, if it ever exists one).

People organizing booth should deal with a single specific entity and
they should be able to simply request for a booth box. Obviously Debian
will cover any shipping costs, for both receiving and sending
back what was not sold.

This booth box should contain a pre-defined set of merchandise stuff:
T-Shirts, flyers (e.g. ) and so
on. For a better (and in some case also professional) booth experience,
Debian could also provide booth infrastructure, i.e. foldable containers
for flyers or foldable poster standers [sorry for the names, I do not
have any idea how these are called in English, I hope you can get
them!].

Given the fact that most of the conferences take place either in the
Americas or in Europe, there should be two different boxes and thus at
least two different people in charge. This will also assure a sort of
redundancy to requests.

Over time I've been doing a mixture of Qemu, VirtualBox, and now KVM.
Recent updates in VirtualBox (at least in Testing/Sid) allow for running
VMs in both VirtualBox and KVM at the same time (previously they
conflicted).

The nice thing about VirtualBox is that it allows running any OS in it.
KVM is limited in what it will run (generally just Linux distributions,
AFAIK), but the nice thing is that when it works the OS in the VM runs
at about 80% - 85% of native speed. This is why it's nice to be able to
run both KVM and VirtualBox at the same time -- so you can get the speed
of KVM where it's usable, and use VirtualBox for running the other OSes.

I never saw an answer to this, and didn't have much luck with the
hostnames on the sign in Carleton; IIRC, only one of them resolved,
and it didn't appear to be running cupsd. Any tips?

(FWIW, I was trying to print a new badge barcode generated via

gpg --fingerprint ... | sed -ne '/=/s/[^0123456789ABCDEF]//gp'

because my badge only gave the fingerprint of my old key, which I'd
like to retire once I get enough of you to sign the new one. ;-)

Thanks!

You are confused. KVM relies on hardware virtualisation and its guests
should be able to run any OS that the host can run natively. Xen also
now supports this as an alternative to paravirtualisation. On older
processors KVM cannot be used and Xen is limited to running
paravirtualised guests.

[Debconf-discuss] no debconf wireless in Davis

2010-08-02 Thread Holger Levsen
Hi,

the debconf ESSID was introduced in Davis 8h before Debian Day started.
Unfortunatly it breaks the video, both streaming and recording.

So those guruplugs will be gone tomorrow (actually they are already) and thus
the debconf ESSID will be gone. There will still be wireless via the Columbia
wireless lan, which worked very well for me so far. Personally I've never
used the debconf ESSID here :-)

There is time to improve this situation on wednesday, when no talks are
scheduled. I'll be on a boat then :-p

cheers,

FWIW, when I was about to meet the DebConf delegation there after my
9:00-12:00 shift at front-desk, I found them as a hungry and
desperate-looking group lurking the streets in search for
shelter. They looked certainly pathetic and compassion-inspiring - I
think that's because Amsterdam closes at 12AM.

They were hungry and thirsty. I was only thirsty. Besides, I was
riding a bike, which they didn't have - And I feared that, given their
condition, they would try to steal my bike (which is, worse of all,
lent by a good friend!) and sell it for food+beer, so I quickly head
back to 114th street.

Upon my arrival, I met with yet another unfortunate group of
exilees. They were happy exilees, all in all, as they carried precious
b33r on them - And looked as thirsty as myself! They were arguing,
though, with the Carman dorms' guard.

The guard explained that he was not allowed to see them entering the
premises with alcohol. And they had some beer. And if they drank on
the street, they would surely be fined+arrested by the local cops. Oh,
the dilemma! Good thing that I arrived just then, on my bike, with my
DebConf bag hanging 'round my neck.

So, right away -and in front of the guard- they deprived me of my bag,
gently allowing me to keep its contents, and "hid" the beers inside of
it. I agreed to their extortion in exchange for a beer or three. The
guard agreed that he was no longer seeing the beers enter the
building. And we had a very good night chat at the basement.

So, in short: If you want to get the beers, go to the small
supermarket across Broadway - but don't forget to bring your DebConf
bag along. After all, that's why it was given to you! In future years,
the orga team will explore handing out the shirts and local
information in small, beer-shaped brown paper bags.

PS- Has anybody seen my bag? It seems to have got lost after
yesterday's night at the basement...

FWIW, I have been waiting and willing for other people to come up and
exchange signatures. That has still not happened, not even once. I
know that I have cross-signed with many of the usual suspects last
year in Cáceres (I started using a 4096R key back then)... But so far,
the one-to-one keysigning is IMO inexistent. I will try to (find time
to) get it kickstarted tomorrow.

Also FWIW, I do not plan to take part on any massive key signing
party. I do not really believe they add up to our keyring's real trust
- It's much better to cross-sign people based on you knowing them
rather than on identifying their passport. I am more than willing to
sign whatever the people I have come to meet i.e. as Daniel Gilmore,
Richard Darst, Jeremy Baron, Kevin Mark, or several others I've really
met and worked with during the past week without seeing their
respective IDs than a random person I have never met that shows me
their passport.
