Then it is probably _the_ good moment to dedicate some of the debian
money reserves to debconf specifically for enabling sponsorships that
would otherwise not be possible.

I'm confident contacts among the orga team and the DPL about this were
already ongoing, but it seemed silly not to mention that possibility
in this thread.

Cheers.

I was wrong (or the policy changed). You have to buy the ticket from
Chamartin to Atocha. It's less than two EUR, but you'll have to deal
with getting it (vending machines are in English too).

About regional trains the told me (without much conviction) that the
usually get online ~15 days from the date of departure except for
Talgos (which is not this case) that go online ~2 months before.

Alberto

I have made a very similar connection to catch the Ave to Seville from
the same sleeper train arrival. It's tight but doable if nothing goes
wrong.

Not only has the DPL been contacted, he's also on the DebConf orga team and is
well aware of the option to use some of Debian's reserves. No final decisions
have been made in that regard and I'm not the DPL so I'll leave any further
comment on that to Steve.

Speaking as DebConf10 localteam lead, I will say that it would be nice if DC10
has some seed money to pay early expenses with after DC9 finances are
completed, but there are several ways to attain that goal and I think we'll be
able to manage regardless given how early we're starting on local and funding
issues for DC10.

Talgos to go *to* Cáceres are opened for booking (I booked my trip on
Jul 21st) but Talgos for return trips are not yet (assuming you plan
to return on 30th or 31st). As of today the last day it was possible
to book for was July 25th. So that seens to be 2 months, or 60 days,
or so.

I'd suggest people to book Talgos as early as possible as they have a
"web" fare that goes down to 12.30euros and I would bet that there are
not that many seats in that category, if RENFE is using the same yield
management systems than our French SNCF.

Buying plane tickets is a sure way to lose money. In my case, I bought
my ticket back in February, but (blame the flu or whatnot) if I were
to buy it today it would have been US$700 cheaper - Half the price :-/

Yes, we would really need a better process. But that would require
having a constant fund we can rely on to ensure sponsorship earlier
on. It is a though spot, but... In the end, this might be the only
conference that goes that far to make sure that everybody that should
be there is there.

If you want a hostel that is ok: clean enough, air, totally free wifi, with
a metro station 10 min away and have big lockers. You can go to:
http://www.hostelworld.com/availability.php/Cat-s-Hostel/Madrid/6657
or
http://www.hostelworld.com/availability.php/Mad-Hostel/Madrid/13326
(they are pretty the same since apparently, they are both owned by the same
people).

I'm fully expecting to spend some money from Debian funds to help
DebConf as and when needed, yes. I've been waiting on some of the
remaining potential sponsors to work out, but I don't expect to see
much more on that front now. Time to decide how much money to spend...
