Reputed drug cartel boss arrested in Matamoros
By JO TUCKMAN
Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle Foreign Service
This is an undated handout photo of suspected
drug lord Osiel Cardenas.

MEXICO CITY -- The Mexican military on Friday captured the alleged head
of the Gulf Cartel, a powerful, Matamoros-based drug trafficking
organization that smuggles large amounts of cocaine and marijuana into
Texas.
Osiel Cardenas, 35, was detained after a midmorning shootout in a suburb
of Matamoros, across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Mexican Defense
Secretary Gerardo Vega Garcia said in a statement.
Cardenas, who earned the nickname Mata Amigos, or "Buddy
Killer," for his ruthlessness in underworld power struggles, was
flown to Mexico City and handed over to civilian authorities, the defense
secretary said.
Three soldiers were wounded when Cardenas' bodyguards fiercely resisted
the arrest, Vega said. The number of casualties among Cardenas' men
wasn't immediately known.
Cardenas' arrest is by far the highest-profile success in Mexico's often
sputtering war on drugs since the capture a year ago of Benjamin Arellano
Felix, one of the brothers who directed the so-called Tijuana Cartel, and
the killing a month earlier of his brother, Ramon. The U.S. government
repeatedly lauded the demise of the Arellano Felix brothers as proof that
President Vicente Fox is serious in his commitment to combat narcotics
trafficking in Mexico.
The Gulf Cartel, which holds sway along the Gulf of Mexico and into the
Yucatan Peninsula, has been eclipsed in recent years by the Tijuana gang
and another based in Ciudad Juarez.
But the Matamoros-based organization still controls the transportation of
South American cocaine up Mexico's northeast coast, authorities said, and
also smuggles Mexican-grown marijuana into the United States.
Cardenas, a former mechanic's assistant who once worked for federal law
enforcement agencies, faces Mexican charges of murder, drug trafficking
and illegally possessing firearms.
Cardenas also was wanted in the United States on charges of drug
smuggling, money laundering and assaulting federal agents. The latter
charge dates from an incident in 1999 when Cardenas allegedly threatened
to kill several U.S. drug enforcement agents who had been cornered on a
Matamoros street by cartel members.
"This is my territory," Cardenas reportedly told the agents in
demanding they turn over an informant. "You can't control it, so get
the hell out of here."
The threat prompted the FBI to offer a $2 million reward for Cardenas'
capture. The reward was later rescinded.
Cardenas' leadership of the gang dates to the mid-1990s after the capture
of Juan Garcia Abrego, who had built the organization into one of the
country's strongest. Garcia Abrego was extradited to the United States in
1996 and sentenced in federal court in Houston to 11 life terms for drug
smuggling.
Finding Cardenas took six months of intensive intelligence work made more
difficult by a network of corrupt Mexican officials who were protecting
him, Vega said.
To avoid having Cardenas tipped off by corrupt officials, the authorities
kept their plans secret from federal and state law enforcement agencies
and used soldiers to arrest him.
Several dozen officials accused of protecting Cardenas' criminal
activities already have been detained, Mexican Attorney General Rafael
Macedo de la Concha told reporters Friday.
"There is a vast number of people involved in giving protection to
Osiel Cardenas and all his organization," said Macedo de la Concha,
who is also an army general.
The militarization of Mexico's drug war has been criticized by human
rights groups that fear it will lead to abuse. But the attorney general
insisted the military was acting in coordination with civilian agencies
and abiding by the law.
"The work of the institutions today is a coordinated, cohesive
one," the attorney general said.
Even as officials celebrated Cardenas' arrest, no one was suggesting that
it would have a major impact on the amount of South American cocaine or
locally produced heroin and marijuana that pours through this country on
its way to U.S. users.
A year after the dramatic killing and capture of two of the three
Arellano Felix brothers, their gang has restructured and continues to
operate. In Juarez, the group dominated by Amado Carrillo Fuentes until
he died during plastic surgery in 1997 remains quite active.
"Without doubt, the cartels have varied their methods of operation,
they have fragmented," Macedo de la Concha said. "Obviously,
that makes the detention of those who head them and run them more
difficult."
As authorities' pursuit of Cardenas in recent months weakened his hold on
the Gulf Cartel, the border has been mired in violent battles between
competing drug gangs, with dozens killed in Nuevo Laredo and other
cities.
And the cheer over Cardenas' capture was balanced with reversals
elsewhere.

To reclaim self management over our forests and our lives we still have
to fight on all fronts.I don't mean to sound insensitive but this is an
important story in a world with over 6 billion of us and pressures
increasing on land everywhere.
PARIS--A Swedish ecologist is proposing the ultimate in
environmentally-friendly funerals: having your body freeze-dried and then
shattered into dust to help fertilize the soil.
Susanne Wiigh-Masak, an environmental consultant, has tested her
technique on dead pigs and cats, which were lowered in a bath of liquid
nitrogen for instant freezing, the British weekly New Scientist reports
in next Saturday's issue.
During their immersion, the cadavers were bombarded with ultrasound waves
to crack open the tissues to let the nitrogen work right to the core. The
frozen bodies shattered into a powder with the tap of a hammer.
"What you are left with is a hygienic, odorless powder that is less
than one percent water," Wiigh-Masak says.
Her plan is to use the same technique on human bodies.
According to her calculation, a human corpse would be reduced to
freeze-dried powder about a quarter of the original weight.
It would then be placed in a biodegradable coffin and buried in a shallow
grave, where it would quickly provide nutrition for the soil.
The freeze-dried funeral has distinct environmental advantages over
traditional departures, argues Wiigh-Masak.
Cremation uses up fossil fuels, thus contributing to global warming, and
often releases chemicals into the atmosphere, such as mercury vapor from
dental fillings. Burials, too, can be a pollution risk, as many bodies
are embalmed in formaldehyde, which can leak into groundwater.
A corpse buried in a coffin can take up to 60 years to decompose, whereas
the freeze-dried way returns all organic compounds to the soil within six
months, Wiigh-Masak says proudly.
Wiigh-Masak hopes that the laws will be relaxed to allow freeze-drying.

With allegations of ``conflict of interest,'' and possible

the neo-conservative hatchetmen in the press are trying to stop
the exposes about ``Clean Break,'' the 1996 policy paper that
Perle wrote for Benjamin Netanyahu, that mapped out war against
Iraq, Syria, and Iran, and abrogating the Oslo Accords.

The neo-con line is that anyone who questions Clean Break is
an ``anti-Semite.'' But most of Perle's defenders are on the same
neo-con foundations' payroll. Among the freakouts:
March 13: in the Moonie Washington Times, columnist Tony
Blankley lunges after NBC's Tim Russert for asking Perle about
Clean Break and the Israeli stake in Iraq war during a Feb. 23 interview.
``If such a respectable citadel of the establishment
as Russert's Meet the Press can air such a question, we could
expect worse''
But Blankley is not an objective observer; he
was Newt Gingrich's chief of staff, when Gingrich was being
courted by IASPS, the think tank that wrote the Clean Break.
On March 12, the Moonie Times trotted out Shoshona Bryen, a director
of the Likud-linked JINSA group, that infiltrates military
networks, to screech about Rep. Jim Moran's (D-VA) attack on
American Jewish support for the Iraq war.
Also March 13: the ``liberal'' Washington Post, partially
owned by Sharon intimate Lally Weymouth (daughter of the late
Katy Graham), has a long character assassination of Moran, for
having called on ``leaders of the Jewish community [to]...change
the direction'' of the Iraq war policy that they are supporting.
Quoting all neo-con outets: the National Review, the New
Republic, and the Weekly Standard, Kurtz also freaks out about
Patrick Buchanan, who just launched a magazine called American
Conservative and wrote about Clean Break.
But, it is doubtful
that the freakouts will stop the exposes of the neo-cons -- every
day, more ``citadels of the establishment,'' including the London
Financial Times, and ABC's Nightline, are questioning the roots
of Bush's insane policy.

"Blaming the Jews" editorial, etc. He asked Powell to respond,
even before any other opening statements were made, or before
Powell delivered his prepared testimony.
"U.S. policy with respect to Iraq is not just something that
has been developed in the last month or so; one can go back many
years to the end of the Gulf War," Powell responded, outlining
one version of the history of the past 12 years of Iraq policy
(but without mentioning that Wolfowitz, Libby et al. elaborated
their policy of preventive war about 12 years ago).
Powell said
that "we have a comprehensive policy for the region, and strategy
with respect to Iraq has derived from our interest in the region
and our support of the U.N. resolutions over time."
"It is not driven by any small cabal that is buried away
somewhere, that is telling President Bush or me or Vice President
Cheney or Condi Rice or other members of our administration what
our policies should be"
"So this is not just the result of a few individuals who are
running loose, as some suggest, but it's a comprehensive policy
developed over the years, over several administrations"

Put Up or Shut Up, Richard Perle
I double-dare him to sue Seymour Hersh.
By Jack Shafer
Posted Thursday, March 13, 2003, at 3:38 PM PT
"I'm gonna punch you in the nose" is a serious threat. "I'm gonna punch you
in the nose tomorrow … or the day after" carries much less urgency. But the
stipulative warning "I'm gonna punch you in the nose next week in England,
where I'm looking to hire a professional nose-puncher to inflict the
punishment" is the sort of statement only a grandstanding pantywaist would
make.

A grandstanding pantywaist like Richard N. Perle.

Perle threatened yesterday to sue investigative reporter Seymour M. Hersh
for libel—specifically, for things Hersh wrote about him in this week's New
Yorker. The article examines the potential conflict of interest posed by
Perle's dual roles as official Bush adviser (in the form of non-paid chair
of the Defense Policy Board) and as managing partner at Trireme Partners, a
venture capital firm. Trireme appears to invest in businesses that deal in
enterprises "that are of value to homeland security and defense," according
to Hersh's piece. As a special government employee, Perle is subject to a
federal Code of Conduct, Hersh writes, and "[t]hose rules bar a special
employee from participating in an official capacity in any matter in which
he has a financial interest."

The article doesn't accuse Perle of breaking any laws, but it explores the
unseemly nature of advocating a war on Iraq while engaged in a business
that could financially benefit from such a war.

Ordinarily newspapers don't consider it news that someone might have
"plans" to file a lawsuit. Especially if they plan to file later. In
England. All of which explains why no U.S. daily published his threat
except the neoconservative New York Sun. Its story, "Perle Suing Over New
Yorker Article," in yesterday's edition, reads like a press release for
Perle, who, the article notes, is a director of Hollinger International,
which, the article notes, invests in the Sun.

In mounting Perle's prosecution, the Sun article calls upon Perle protégé
Laurent Murawiec, a former follower of Lyndon LaRouche. Murawiec, who made
news last year when he gave a PowerPoint presentation before the Defense
Policy Board that called for the invasion of Saudi Arabia and the seizure
of its oil fields, said to the Sun, "Richard has been in public life for
over 30 years and his ethics have never been challenged by anybody." Not
surprisingly, no Perle critic or Hersh partisan comments in the piece.
(Addendum, March 14, 2003: The New York Sun's Ira Stoll, who used to
bird-dog the New York Times with his SmarterTimes Web site, writes to
complain that the Sun did talk to somebody on Hersh's side—New Yorker
editor David Remnick. That's true, but Remnick is a likely defendant in the
case if Perle is nuts enough to file it, not an outside observer. Had the
Sun been interested in pursuing the sort of "balance" Stoll used to urge
upon the Times, it would have talked to Hersh partisans after letting two
Perle cronies prattle on about how wonderful and unassailable their buddy
is. When the Sun publishes its follow-up about Perle v. Hersh, I'm
available to comment about Hersh's bona fides.)

What part of The New Yorker story is untrue, the Sun asked Perle? "It's all
lies, from beginning to end," Perle responded, not exactly furthering his
brief. Perle knows his way around lies, having described Hersh to CNN's
Wolf Blitzer on Sunday as "the closest thing American journalism has to a
terrorist … because he sets out to do damage and he will do it by whatever
innuendo, whatever distortion he can—look, he hasn't written a serious
piece since My Lai." Yes, yes; since his My Lai story, Hersh has only dealt
with such lighthearted subjects as KAL 007, the Israeli bomb, and Henry
Kissinger.

While we're on the subject of serious, it bears examining why Perle would
take his libel lawsuit to England. Is it because Perle is English? No.
Because Hersh is? No. Because The New Yorker is published there? No. He's
venue-shopping in England because it's easier to win a libel case there
than it is here, which he explains in the Sun. As a public figure and
government official, Perle would be laughed out of court in the United
States. If he got a settlement in the U.K., he could raid the substantial
British assets of the The New Yorker's parent company, Condé Nast.

British libel law, of course, is completely un-American! "While both
American and British law preclude liability if the statement is true,
American law places the burden of proof on the plaintiff to show the
statement is false," write media lawyers Laura R. Handman and Robert D.
Balin of Davis Wright Tremaine. "By contrast, British law imposes the
burden on defendant to prove truth or 'justification' and permits
aggravated damages if defendant tries but fails." Maybe Hersh should be
grateful Perle isn't filing where Sharia is observed.

On Saturday evening March 1, Daniel Ellsberg was noodling around the Web
and happened across a story from the British newspaper The Observer that
caught his eye under the tantalizing headline, "Revealed: US Dirty Tricks
to Win Vote on Iraq War." The paper's Martin Bright, Ed Vulliamy and Peter
Beaumont had obtained a copy of a memo from a National Security Agency
(NSA) official outlining U.S. plans to spy on certain United Nations
Security Council members to get some insight into their thinking on Iraq
and the coming Security Council vote.

Interesting, Ellsberg thought. "So I rushed out the next morning at 5
o'clock to get [The New York Times] to see how they were covering it," he
told me. Naturally, he was disappointed. And remains so, because, as I
write, the Times has yet to mention the story, which has received only
scant coverage elsewhere in the American press.

Meanwhile, it's received far more coverage around the globe. And at the end
of last week, the story took an ominous new turn. A British employee of the
Government Communications Headquarters (Britain's NSA), a 28-year-old
woman, was arrested on suspicion of leaking the memo. The Observer reports
now that Tony Blair's government -- with his political future conceivably
hanging on what happens at the United Nations in the coming days -- has
commenced a search for more leakers and is seeking more arrests. Hence
Ellsberg's interest.

"A Pentagon Papers case, essentially, is happening right now in Britain,"
he says, "around a memo whose revelation could dramatically affect the
Security Council's vote. And by and large, Americans don't even know about
it."

Critics have said, Big deal; finding out that spying is going on at the
United Nations is like finding out that there's gambling at Rick's. And to
be sure, there is a long history of bugging and surveillance among the
world body's members, a history The Observer itself detailed in a related
follow-up story.

Fine. But two points. First, can anyone say with a straight face that this
memo isn't an interesting thing? Political strategy has been "going on" for
a long time, too, but when a memo outlining one is unearthed -- such as
Karl Rove's famous PowerPoint presentation of last year -- it's news.
Second, there's reason to believe that the American media's indifference to
The Observer story reposes less in the fact that this is a dog-bites-man
yawner than in the very reasonable suspicion -- or fear -- among our
nation's editors that running this story would set off a firestorm here and
would require, in this climate, more spine than most American news outlets
are displaying these days.

Right-wing media outlets sure saw the potential for trouble, because after
the story broke in England, The Washington Times and the Drudge Report
sought immediately to discredit it and prevent it from piquing curiosity
here. They cited misspellings that supposedly proved the inauthenticity of
the memo, which The Observer posted on its Web site. But it turned out the
paper had merely anglicized certain spellings. It re-Americanized them, and
those charges melted away. The memo's authenticity has now been verified,
Vulliamy says, by everyone from intelligence experts to the journalist and
NSA specialist James Bamford. Nevertheless, The Washington Times and Matt
Drudge accomplished their mission: Either Martin or Vulliamy had been
booked for appearances on NBC, CBS, ABC and CNN, all of which were cancelled.

Once the "it's fake" line of attack was shot down, the gambling-at-Rick's
analogy took hold, and it's held firm since. As I say, the argument that
such activity is not, strictly speaking, new has merit. But is that really
why the American press has shrugged? (Baltimore's Sun, which has given the
story continuing coverage, is a notable exception).

Ellsberg posed to me this hypothetical: Suppose The Observer had unearthed
a memo showing that Germany or, God forbid, France, had been spying on poor
little Cameroon (and four other delegations). Think the Drudge Report might
have spun that story a little differently? Would The Washington Times have
exercised its sober journalistic skepticism and questioned the authenticity
of that memo? How many days in a row would that story have commanded "the
wood" (the front page, in tabloid-speak) of The New York Post? The cable
shows would have been able to speak of nothing else for a week. And --
this, finally, is the point -- a pro-war vote from the Security Council
would have been a done deal.

Just a guess, but I'm betting that The New York Times would have covered
that. The Times often gets singled out in these narratives, and in some
ways unfairly: It's still the best thing we've got. But it gets singled out
because of its unique position of power in American journalism (and maybe
in part because of that little motto up there in the upper-left-hand corner
of the front page). People have higher expectations of it

Popular Party. He reiterated charges that Iraq has failed to disarm since
the Persian Gulf War in 1991.

Aznar compared those who oppose military action to those who sat back and
watched while Hitler invaded neighbouring countries or Yugoslav leaders
carried out ethnic cleansing in Kosovo.

"The Balkans appeared on TV but there are human rights abuses in Iraq,"
Aznar said. "Does that make it right to act in former but not in latter? I
don't think so."

After "so many years of tyranny, murders and torture," Aznar said he hoped
"the Iraqi people will see freedom soon and Spaniards can proudly say in
that moment that we were capable of assuming serenely and calmly our
responsibility."

Aznar made no mention of the emergency summit he is to hold with U.S.
President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Sunday on
Portugal's Azores Islands.

But the national news agency Efe quoted government officials as saying the
three would discuss ways of mustering international support for their
stance rather than plans to attack Iraq.

The Portuguese defence ministry said the summit will be held at the Lajes
Field air base on Terceira island. Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Durao
Barroso will also attend the summit as host, his office said.

Aznar and Blair are the two most fervent supporters of the hardline U.S.
stance on Iraq. Portugal also backs the United States.

Spain's opposition parties, however, oppose a war, and opinion polls
indicate that more than 80 per cent of Spaniards feel the same way.

Aznar's party meeting in a downtown Madrid hotel came shortly after some
five million people across the country, according to union estimates,
staged a 15-minute work stoppage at noon to protest the war plans.

Opposition politicians joined workers from government offices, businesses
and factories in the protest called by the European Confederation of Unions.

Socialist party leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said he hoped that
Aznar would tell Bush at the summit "that if he (Bush) hasn't got the
support of the United Nations for a military attack, then he shouldn't do
it ... That's what the majority of people want."

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Germans stopped work for 10 minutes Friday
to protest a possible war, bringing car assembly lines to a halt and trams
in one city to a standstill.

Labour unions, which organized the action, said more than 150,000 workers
at factories across the country - among them three Volkswagen factories and
a DaimlerChrysler plant in Duesseldorf - walked off their jobs briefly as
part of a Europe-wide demonstration for peace. In the eastern city of
Halle, trams ground to a halt.

Polls have showed an overwhelming majority of Germans oppose military
action against Iraq, and activists have threatened to step up protests if
war breaks out. Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's government, together with
France and Russia, has been leading resistance to a proposed U.S.-British
resolution that would give Baghdad a short deadline to disarm, or face war.

In Spain, political parties and labour unions have called for a massive
turnout for anti-war demonstrations to be held Saturday as part of protests
called around the globe.

Today, the foreign ministry reissued a statement calling on Spaniards not
to travel to Iraq and those who are there to leave the country because of
the "rapidly deteriorating international situation."

The Costa Rica Kid.

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat
All around the world, people are waging peace. To Robert Muller, one of the
great advocates of the United Nations, it is nothing short of a Miracle AND
IT IS WORKING.
Dr. Robert Muller, former assistant secretary general of the United
Nations, now Chancellor emeritus of the University of Peace in Costa Rica
was one of the people who witnessed the founding of the U.N. and has worked
in support of or inside the U.N. ever since. Recently he was in San
Francisco to be honored for his service to the world through the U.N. and
through his writings and teachings for peace.

At age eighty, Dr. Muller surprised, even stunned, many in the audience
that day with his most positive assessment of where the world stands now
regarding war and peace.
I was there at the gathering and I myself was stunned by his remarks. What
he said turned my head around and offered me a new way to see what is going
on in the world. My synopsis of his remarks is below:

"I'm so honored to be here," he said. "I'm so honored to be alive at such a
miraculous time in history. I'm so moved by what's going on in our world
today."

(I was shocked. I thought -- Where has he been? What has he been reading?
Has he seen the newspapers? Is he senile? Has he lost it? What is he
talking about?)

Dr. Muller proceeded to say, "Never before in the history of the world has
there been a global, visible, public, viable, open dialogue and
conversation about the very legitimacy of war."

The whole world is in now having this critical and historic
dialogue--listening to all kinds of points of view and positions about
going to war or not going to war. In a huge global public conversation the
world is asking -- "Is war legitimate? Is it illegitimate? Is there enough
evidence to warrant an attack? Is there not enough evidence to warrant an
attack?

What will be the consequences? The costs? What will happen after a war?

How will this set off other conflicts? What might be peaceful alternatives?

What kind of negotiations are we not thinking of?

What are the real intentions for declaring war?"

All of this, he noted, is taking place in the context of the United Nations
Security Council, the body that was established in 1949 for exactly this
purpose. He pointed out that it has taken us more than fifty years to
realize that function, the real function of the U.N. And at this moment in
history--the United Nations is at the center of the stage. It is the place
where these conversations are happening, and it has become in these last
months and weeks, the most powerful governing body on earth, the most
powerful container for the world's effort to wage peace rather than war.

Dr. Muller was almost in tears in recognition of the fulfillment of this
dream.

"We are not at war," he kept saying. We, the world community, are WAGING
peace. It is difficult, hard work. It is constant and we must not let up.

It is working and it is an historic milestone of immense proportions.

It has never happened before -- never in human history -- and it is
happening now, every day, every hour, waging peace through a global
conversation.

He pointed out that the conversation questioning the validity of going to
war has gone on for hours, days, weeks, months and now more than a year,
and it may go on and on.

"We're in peacetime," he kept saying. "Yes, troops are being moved. Yes,
warheads are being lined up.

Yes, the aggressor is angry and upset and spending a billion dollars a day
preparing to attack. But not one shot has been fired. Not one life has been
lost.

There is no war. It's all a conversation."

It is tense, it is tough, it is challenging, AND we are in the most
significant and potent global conversation and public dialogue in the
history of the world. This has not happened before on this scale ever
before--not before WWI or WWII, not before Vietnam or Korea, this is new
and it is a stunning new era of Global listening, speaking, and
responsibility.

In the process, he pointed out, new alliances are being formed. Russia and
China on the same side of an issue is an unprecedented outcome. France and
Germany working together to wake up the world to a new way of seeing the
situation. The largest peace demonstrations in the history of the world are
taking place - and we are not at war! Most peace demonstrations in recent
history took place when a war was already waging, sometimes for years, as
in the case of Vietnam.

"So this," he said, "is a miracle. This is what "waging peace " looks like."

No matter what happens, history will record that this is a new era, And
that the 21st century has been initiated with the world in a global
dialogue looking deeply, profoundly and responsibly as a global community
at the legitimacy of the actions of a nation that is desperate to go to war.
Through these global peace-waging efforts, the leaders of that nation are
being engaged in further dialogue, forcing them to rethink, and allowing
all natio

More and more people are willing to state the obvious -

The US is the greatest threat to World Peace.

Whole World Feels Effect of US Intent, Activist Says
The chief threat to the world today is not Iraq, but the United States,
Argentine activist says

by Timothy Appleby

The Bush administration's drive to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein is so
aggressive that even before a war has started its repercussions are being
felt in every corner of the world, says Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo
Perez Esquivel.

Nobel Peace Prize recipient Adolfo Perez Esquivel listens to a discussion
titled: "A world without wars is possible" during the World Social Forum in
Porto Alegre, Brazil, Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002. (AP Photo/Douglas Engle)

The Argentine, who won the 1980 Peace Prize, views President George W.
Bush's plans for attacking Iraq with great alarm. "Bush is setting the
world on fire," he said.

Mr. Perez Esquivel, a native of Buenos Aires, is an architect, sculptor and
teacher. He won the 1980 prize for his resistance to Argentina's Dirty War
against leftist rebels. Imprisoned and tortured, he was freed with help
from Amnesty International and the Pope.

At 71, he leads the Latin American human-rights group Servicio, Paz y
Justicia, and travels widely on behalf of the antiwar movement. He has been
in Toronto and Ottawa under the auspices of the church group KAIROS:
Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives.

After visiting Iraq last year for a firsthand look at what 12 years of
sanctions and U.S. bombing attacks have done to its battered
infrastructure, Mr. Perez Esquivel scoffed at the notion that Iraq poses
any significant threat.

A U.S. attack, on the other hand, would open "a Pandora's box, threatening
to set free the demons of death and destruction," he wrote recently.

"The chief danger in the world today is not Saddam Hussein," Mr. Perez
Esquivel said. "It is the United States."
Like other critics of U.S. policy, he perceives in the United States an
angry, isolated country inflicting lasting damage on itself. Mr. Perez
Esquivel reaches for some words by Abraham Lincoln, quoted by President
John F. Kennedy at the United Nations in 1962.

"What Lincoln said more than a century ago is that if the United States
doesn't defend life, then it faces the prospect of self-destruction."

Yet unstable as the planet is, Mr. Perez Esquivel fears surging
anti-Americanism will make it far more so. Across Latin America, he says,
the antiwar sentiment, which has prompted big demonstrations in half a
dozen countries, is vigorously feeding long-term resentment over U.S.
policies on trade, tariffs, militarization and debt.

"What's happening with Iraq is not isolated, it's part of a global
phenomenon. When we see the installation of U.S. military bases throughout
Latin America, when we look at [American interference] in countries such as
Venezuela and Colombia and Panama, we have to ask ourselves what's going on.

"Lots of people think it and won't say it, but I will say it: The United
States is seeking to control the world. That's why we are seeing the
reaction in so many countries."

On Friday March 14, over fifty activists went on an instantaneous march
along Cincinnati Ohio?s sidewalks spreading a message of resistance and
revolution to the otherwise quite downtown.

The grassroots march took place after an afternoon anti-war rally on
Fountain Square in the city?s main business district. Organized by several
anarchist groups, the rally and march drew the attention of numerous
bystanders and over twenty police officers.

Another rally took place in Cincinnati at the same time near the University
of Cincinnati?s campus and drew equal support.

The downtown event was peaceful. But one man, in a jester of opposition to
the protest, spat on a teen making a honk for peace sign.

Protesters marched past the federal building and county courthouse along
with local landmarks.

The two-hour event came on the heals of a pro-war rally at Fountain Square
on Wednesday.

Cincinnati last entered the national protest spotlight when President Bush
came to the city to make his case for war on October 7th.

In that protest, activists took control of the streets surrounding the
venue Bush spoke at, delaying the departure of patrons for over an hour.

A larger rally is planned at Fountain Square on April 5 at 3 PM. For more

CYPHERPUNK GOLD RUSH!

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat

Paypal is bailing from the pron biz! Big time bucks will now be available
from this 'millicent ghetto.'The word is out on the street and the rush
is on.Cypherpunks write code...and rake it in! Come in SEALAND!
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - In the same week a news link Website that
opposes a U.S.-Iraq war accused PayPal of selective censorship in closing
its account, the online payment system announced formally what's been
rumored for at least a few weeks: It's saying goodbye to the adult
Internet.
In a new series of guidelines governing "mature audiences,"
PayPal said it will process transactions for pre-1980 adult-oriented
items bought at online auctions and the like, but it will no longer
process memberships to adult Websites or payments for sexually oriented
videos, magazines, or photographs made after 1980.
PayPal will continue to process payments for a number of adult novelties,
"include[ing], but ... not limited to: items which are intended for
use in a sexual setting (such as "bondage" and
"fetish" items), items which display sexual activity or portray
human genitalia in a "life-like" or realistic fashion, and
vibrators intended for use in sexual activity (as opposed to ordinary
massagers)" – but they have to be auctioned in the "mature
audiences" section of eBay, with which PayPal merged last
year.
Adult sites will have to remove PayPal from their payment alternatives by
May 13, according to Kevin Pursglove, eBay's public information
spokesman. He said accounts will be allowed to stay open long enough for
the users to remove any of their funds still in the accounts. People who
want adult materials and are willing to obtain them from eBay and some
other auction marketplaces can still use PayPal, he said.
Why is PayPal pulling back from the adult Net? Pursglove said it was
mostly a question of financial risk. "Like any company, PayPal has
to find the right balance between serving the needs of a large, diverse
group of customers and minimizing financial risk," he said.
"Over the last several months or years, there's higher financial
risk associated with adult. And [adult's] actually a very small part of
PayPal's business."
First Amendment attorney Lawrence G. Walters said he figured PayPal was
pulling away from the adult Net when several of his clients, whom he
would not name, received short notices from PayPal canceling their
accounts as of mid-May. "They said to one client that after
reviewing financial factors, they concluded this change is the best
course of business," Walters said by telephone from his Florida
offices. "They didn't say what those factors are, and I don't know
if that can be taken at face value."
Walters said there was plentiful speculation among adult businesses who'd
received similar notifications, ranging from potential government
prosecutions to PayPal deciding adult is as much a potential liability as
online gaming, from which PayPal backed away after merging with
eBay.
"At the point of the eBay merger, it didn't have an effect on
adult," Walters says. "But something may have happened between
then and now to cause them to re-evaluate that. And it's very
disconcerting. When you take this in combination with what happened with
Visa, the little guy is having a difficult time competing. PayPal was a
viable alternative for people who didn't want to set up a corporation and
registration fee that Visa imposed. Now, that apparently is not an
option."
PayPal's adios-adult move arose in a week that was already somewhat
aggravating for the company. Barely having announced its initial public
offering, PayPal was slapped with a class-action lawsuit accusing it of
illegitimate restriction of customers' access to their own money. The
suit accuses PayPal of locking customer accounts if fraud is suspected,
whether the amount in question is small or large, meaning customers can't
work any more PayPal-conducted payments or withdraw any of their money
until PayPal clears a transaction, according to the lawsuit's filing
attorney, Gail Koff.
This came in the same week as
WhatReallyHappened.com accused PayPal
of deciding that doing business with controversial politics was less
acceptable than doing business with porn sites – even porn sites, the
news-link site charged, that "abet" child porn and
pedophilia.
WhatReallyHHappened.com's Website includes a singular link to a page
devoted entirely to PayPal and its recent news and problems. The page
features the following note that WhatReallyHappened.com received from
PayPal canceling their user agreement: "As you know, the PayPal User
Agreement states that PayPal, at its sole discretion, reserves the right
to close an account at any time for any reason. We write to inform you
that, after a review of your site, and in accordance with the User
Agreement, your account has been closed. Your funds will be held for 180
days from the date of the last transaction on the account. After 180 days
have expired, we will refund your funds by mailing a check to the addres

The Bush administration is big on symbolism - from its oceans of flags, to
its "message-oriented" backdrops during official speeches, to its ominous
logos and chilling slogans for the Orwellian programs it has implemented,
to the "patriotic" new-speak it uses to sell its murderous war plans, to
all its other techniques of mass-manipulation. Okay, if its SYMBOLISM they
want, LET'S GIVE IT TO THEM!
(article 1)
listen (realaudio)
The sacred "hymn" of the Third Reich, sung with great spirit at rallies and
wherever Nazis gathered, was the "Horst Wessel Lied," alternatively known
as "Die Fahne Hoch". This stirring nationalist marching song was written by
Horst Wessel, an early Nazi "martyr." The song served as a central backdrop
against which the worst crimes of the Third Reich were played out, and saw
frequent use as the background music in Nazi newsreels and propaganda
films. It was regarded with cold resentment by the large community of
Germans who did not agree with Hitler or his policies, and increasingly
came to evoke feelings of loathing wherever it was heard.

"Operation Enduring Association" is a proposal to forever associate in the
public consciousness the criminal objectives of the Bush administration
with the crimes of the Hitler era by playing the old Nazi hymn wherever and
whenever the Bush regime or its policies are being promoted.

Samantha Geimer still an Anal Sex Bomb.(pic)

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat
Shocking new details of the 1977 statutory-rape case against exiled
director Roman Polanski have surfaced - threatening to derail his dramatic
comeback bid for an Oscar.

Graphic testimony from Polanski's then-13-year-old victim before a
California grand jury was recently unsealed and published on the Web site
thesmokinggun.com.

The disturbing revelations include the girl testifying that the pair's
illicit romps at Hollywood hot shot Jack Nicholson's house included anal
and oral sex.

At one point, after plying the girl with champagne and part of a Quaalude,
an obviously concerned Polanski, then 43, demands to know when her last
period was - and if she's on the pill, according to the testimony.

When the girl says she isn't, Polanski wants to sodomize her, she said.

"And I went, 'No,' " the girl said, but she was sodomized anyway.

The victim, Samantha Gailey Geimer, now 39, testified that she resisted "a
little bit, but not really" at the time "because I was afraid of him."

She said the pair's numerous encounters included a nude romp in the hot tub
- where Polanski first made a move on her - and oral sex on the couch.

"He said, 'I'll take you home soon.' And then . . . he started performing
cuddliness," the girl told the grand jury.

Asked what that was, the girl said oral sex.

"I was going, 'No. Come on, stop it.' But I was afraid," Geimer said.

"Sometimes he was saying stuff, but I was just blocking him out," she said.

Geimer said the pair had intercourse minutes later in the bedroom.

The sex continued until they were interrupted by a woman at the house.

The woman has never been officially identified, but news reports have
speculated she may have been actress Angelica Huston, Nicholson's girlfriend.

"Roman, are you in there?" the girl said the woman asked through the door.

"Yes. I just got out of the Jacuzzi, and I'm getting dressed," she said he
replied.

Polanski then started having sex with her again, the girl said. Eventually,
she got up off the bed, dressed, ran out to his car and wept.

The girl said the pair's relationship began innocently, with him taking
photos of her for French Vogue.

But the photo shoots first took a darker turn when he asked her to take off
her shirt and began snapping away - and things steadily grew hotter, she said.

Polanski has argued that their sex was consensual, and that he didn't know
the girl was 13 at the time.

"It was not consensual sex by any means," Geimer, now a mother of three,
wrote just last month in a column in the Los Angeles Times.

"I said no, repeatedly, but he wouldn't take no for an answer. I was alone,
and I didn't know what to do," she said.

"It was scary, and looking back, very creepy."

The Polish-born Polanski fled to France in 1978 as he was about to be
sentenced for having sex with Geimer.

U.S. authorities have vowed to nab him if he ever tries to return.

THE backlash against prominent stars opposing any attack on Iraq has
impacted on this year's Oscars, with organisers drawing up a blacklist of
people who will not be allowed a platform to air anti-war views.
Meryl Streep, Sean Penn, Vanessa Redgrave, George Clooney, Dustin Hoffman
and Spike Lee are among those who will not be speaking, amid fears they
could turn the ceremony into an anti-war rally.
In a move denounced by some as a return to McCarthyism, star presenters
have been ordered to stick to scripts, while winners, who the producers
have no control over, could find their acceptance speeches cut if they say
anything much more than a brief thank you.

The US case for war in Iraq is clouded with propaganda and misinformation.
By Phillip Knightley

The rush to war, the momentum for an invasion of Iraq that most us feel
powerless to stop, seems to have killed our caution. We are in danger of
failing to think for ourselves, failing to ask the right questions and
falling prey to the barrage of propaganda and disinformation that is
constantly pumped at us. So let's begin at the beginning. Why is the United
States so obsessed with weapons of mass destruction?

At the end of the Second World War, the United States came under strong
domestic pressure to end the draft. But the Soviet Union still had the
world's largest land forces. So Washington decided to rely on the atom bomb
- and an air force to deliver it - to assert its military superiority.

Then in 1949, the Soviet Union developed an atom bomb too. With its nuclear
monopoly ended, the United States was reduced to trying to prevent other
countries that might be future enemies from acquiring nuclear weapons, a
policy that, as Immanuel Wallerstein of Yale University points out, can
hardly be termed a resounding success.

However, it was one thing for the major western powers to develop their own
nuclear weapons - a war between, say Britain and America, was so remote as
to be unthinkable - and hopefully India and Pakistan will follow the policy
of Mutually Assured Destruction that kept the nuclear peace between America
and the Soviet Union for nearly 50 years. But what about Iraq?

There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein has been trying for years to build an
atom bomb. There is also no doubt that he has failed. One project was
levelled by Israeli bombers. One programme was too complex for Iraqi
science or technology. Another was destroyed by the International Atomic
Energy Agency before it left Iraq in 1998. Norman Dombey, who teaches
theoretical physics at the University of Sussex, says that as far as
nuclear weapons are concerned, Iraq is much less of a threat now than it
was in 1991.

The International Institute of Strategic Studies agrees with this
assessment and so, to a lesser extent, does Britain's Joint Intelligence
Committee. Sir Andrew Green, former British ambassador to Syria and Saudi
Arabia, says "Talk of the Saddam threat to the West is, frankly, largely
manufactured".

George W. Bush, Tony Blair and John Howard do not want us to believe this
and their black propagandists and spin doctors have put a lot of effort
into trying to convince us that Iraq is only months away from getting a
bomb which it will itself use against the West or will make available to al
Qa'ida.

It is instructive to trace the origins of such worrying stories. The main
source is Khidhir Hamza, an Iraqi defector. In testimony before the Senate
Committee on Foreign Relations he said that Iraq would have nuclear weapons
by 2005. Elsewhere he reduced the time to a matter of months. (The Times,
16 September 2002).

How does Hamza know this, and if he does not know it, why is he saying it?
He has not been in Iraq for eight years, so he cannot have any first-hand
information. He says that when he was there he was a "nuclear engineer",
but his CV - which is on the web - reveals him to be a specialist in
scientific computation and modelling. Dombey describes him as "a glorified
computer scientist".

The point about all defectors is that they tend to say what they feel their
new hosts want them to say. When they first defect, their residence visa
may depend on doing this. When they are established in their new country,
their well-being and prospects are linked to their public performance.

For instance, Hamza defected in 1995 after the CIA planted a story in the
London Sunday Times while he was visiting Libya. The story claimed Hamza
had admitted that Iraq had a secret weapons programme and that he possessed
documents which confirmed this. Realising that the story was a death
sentence if he returned to Baghdad, Hamza managed to persuade the CIA to
take him and his family to the US. Hamza knew that the documents were CIA
forgeries but he said nothing when Madeline Albright quoted them to the UN
Security Council in order to prevent any relaxation of the sanctions on Iraq.

What about the story that Iraq has sought the supply of significant
quantities of uranium from Africa? Dombey answers this succinctly: "So
what? The IAEA has told me that Iraq already has hundreds of tons of
uranium at its disposal. Without enrichment facilities this material is
useless for nuclear weapons, though it could conceivably be used in
conventional weapons in the same way that depleted uranium is used by the
UK and the US."

Dombey points out that more than 50 countries would be able to build an
atom bomb given sufficient fissile material. All it would require would be
a research institution with a good physics department and an army familiar
with e

MANILA, Philippines, March 13 (UPI) -- The Moro Islamic Liberation Front
ordered some $2 million worth of arms from an alleged North Korean
intelligence officer, a Philippine network said Thursday. ABS-CBN news says
it's part of a rebel plan to launch an all-out war against the government.
The network, quoting military officials, said that the MILF also planned to
buy mini-submarines to augment its fighting capability. The military
officials said the plans were revealed in documents seized from the house
of MILF chairman Salamat Hashim, when the military overran a rebel camp.
The North Korean was identified in the documents as Rim Jyu Do, who is said
to be a ranking North Korean intelligence officer, the network reported.
The arms purchase reportedly involved "millions of rounds of ammunition for
M30 machine guns; 10,000 pieces of T65K2 M-16 rifles; 200 pieces of T75
assault machine guns, 1 million rounds of T65K2 armored pricing bullets;
250,000 rounds of tracer bullets for M-16 rifles and 250,000 rounds of M-16
ammunition for training; and 1,000 different types of hand grenades."
Armed Forces spokesman Col. Essel Soriano told reporters that the military
is trying to verify if the weapons had been delivered.

VERINT needs Liquidating.

Verint makes a mint from govt. spyware
By Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus
Online
Posted: 14/03/2003 at 10:15 GMT
If you're under FBI surveillance, there's a good chance your phone
calls and Internet traffic are traveling over the equipment of Verint
Systems -- a company that's doing very well these days, writes
SecurityFocus' Kevin Poulsen.
New York-based technology firm Verint Systems recently launched a product
called "IntelliFind" that claims impressive capabilities. The
system is designed to be attached to the phone lines at a company's call
center, where it silently monitors every telephone call, and -- using
advanced voice recognition technology -- picks out conversations in which
certain keywords are spoken, dumping a digital recording into a
searchable database. "You can decide you want to see all the calls
where product 'xyz' was mentioned, and then you can pick one and listen
to that entire call," says Alan Roden, Verint's VP of corporate
development.
If IntelliFind sounds like something that would normally be found on a
supercomputer humming in an NSA basement, there's a reason. Behind
business intelligence offerings like IntelliFind, and a line of
networkable video cameras, Verint is a leading maker of electronic
surveillance equipment and software for the United States and other
governments. And it turns out that while other technology firms are
struggling in a down economy, the business of helping governments with
their spying may be a growth industry. In quarterly results announced
Wednesday, Verint, a subsidiary of Comverse Technology, posted record
sales of $42 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2002 -- the
company's third straight quarter of growth since going public in May
2002.
"During the year we believe that a greater interest in gathering
intelligence to prevent criminal activity by government and law
enforcement agencies resulted in greater demand for our communication
interception solutions," said company president Dan Bodner in a
conference call for analysts. "Over the past year we enhanced our
competitive position by entering new markets, expanding our customer
base, and introducing new capabilities for the analysis of content and
culled data collected from wireline, wireless and data networks."

Among those new markets was an unnamed country "in the Latin America
region" whose government recently placed a multi-million dollar
order for communications interception systems, said Bodner.
Bodner didn't say what the Latin American government bought with that
money, but the mainstay of Verint's electronic surveillance business is
its "STAR-GATE" and "RELIANT" products, which operate
on the supply and consumption sides of domestic spying respectively. The
RELIANT system acts as a government agency's big ear, collecting and
managing intercepted voice, e-mail, fax, SMS, data, chat, and Web
browsing -- all on a single platform. On the delivery side, STAR-GATE
does the actual wiretapping, and is primarily marketed to telephone
companies trying to comply with the 1994 Communications Assistance for
Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), which requires telecommunications carriers
to keep their networks wiretap friendly for the FBI. An ISP version of
STAR-GATE lets Internet providers conduct lawful surveillance of their
customers and send the intercepted data to law enforcement over private
networks.
PATRIOT Profits
With recent legislation and court decisions granting U.S. law enforcement
agencies greater spying powers than they've had since the Nixon
administration, government surveillance solutions look like a good bet,
and other technology companies are getting in on the game. Last Fall,
VeriSign launched its "NetDiscovery" service -- a turnkey CALEA
solution for telephone companies that sends intercepted communications to
law enforcement over a national IP-based network, using Verint STAR-GATEs
for the taps. And last August, computer security company Network
Associates got into the Carnivore business with its acquisition of
Utah-based Traxess, makers of the "DragNet" Internet spy tool.

And for every company that makes the news with a surveillance system,
there may be countless more that nobody's ever heard of. When the
non-profit Electronic Privacy Information Center recently obtained a list
of companies vying for a piece of the Defense Department's "Total
Information Awareness" computerized spying project, the list of
bidders included nearly as many obscure companies as it did brand name
defense contractors. "It looks like there's this whole world of
these little security technology companies that are probably doing well
these days," says EPIC attorney David Sobel.
But Gartner analyst John Pescatore isn't convinced that there's big money
in domestic surveillance. Instead, he says, the real opportunities are in
helping the U.S. perform surveillance internationally. Indeed, according
to its quarterly report, Verint has a subsidiary that provides
communications interception solution

If only the major networks had played this classic Zappa song
before Bush’s press conference last week to set the stage for what
was to follow. Doing so wouldn’t have made it any easier to swallow the
putrid slime oozing from my TV, but the press conference would have then
much more closely complied with federal Truth in Advertising
statutes.
I’ve read numerous reviews of Bush’s press conference, but the vast
majority seemed to have been written by pundits who apparently watched
some other Bush press conference. I don’t quite understand how
this could have happened because the press conference that I watched was
on almost every channel on my cable system. Maybe they were all watching
channel 236. Maybe it was sunspots. How about a brief time warp into a
different dimension? Sure, why not? That could explain it.
One of the better reviews of this press conference appeared in the

2003 -- Handwritten plans uncovered in Afghanistan reveal that Osama bin

In the never-before-revealed plot, al Qaeda obtained a map of the summit

summit.
The crude map, hand-drawn in red and black ink, was found in Afghanistan in
late November 2001 by the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, said Green Beret
Keith "Jack" Idema.
An Arabic legend on the right side of the map detailed the locations of
security gates, a "surveillance room" and part of a mosque just outside the

On the back of the map was an insider's report on the conference's security.
Clinton canceled two days before the event, and sent then-Vice President Al

Secret US report scorns Bush policy attacks Middle East
policy
By Andrew Gumbel in Los Angeles
15 March 2003
A classified State Department report has poured scorn on George Bush's
much-touted policy that a military invasion of Iraq will lead to a
flowering of democracy across the Middle East.
The report, leaked to the Los Angeles Times, is the latest indication of
divisions within the Bush administration on the goals and even the wisdom
of the war it is itching to start. And it offers a rebuke to
neo-conservatives whose grandiose theories about refashioning the world
in America's image have been central to the Iraq enterprise from the
start.
"Political changes conducive to broader and enduring stability
throughout the region will be difficult to achieve for a very long
time," the report says. It cites corruption, serious infrastructure
degradation and overpopulation as reasons to doubt whether any kind of
stability, much less fully functioning democratic government, will be
possible in the foreseeable future, in Iraq or in many of its neighbours.
"Liberal democracy would be difficult to achieve," the report
goes on. And it warns that any electoral democracy would be subject to
exploitation by "anti- American elements" – a reference to the
Islamist parties that American foreign policy has been at pains to
exclude from government across the Middle East, even if that means
supporting autocratic and repressive regimes. The intelligence source who
leaked the document concluded: "This idea that you're going to
transform the Middle East and fundamentally alter its trajectory is not
credible."
The date on the report, 26 February, was the very day the President laid
out his vision of a domino effect, in which a US invasion of Iraq would
be the beginning of a democratic revolution throughout the Middle East.
"A new regime in Iraq would serve as a dramatic and inspiring
example of freedom for other nations in the region," Mr Bush
said.
The State Department report, by contrast, dismisses the domino theory in
its title: Iraq, the Middle East and Change: No Dominoes.

We Should Sit Out This War
US Credibility on Iraq Has Eroded to an Extent That It is Becoming
Hard to Believe Anything from the Bush Administration
by Haroon Siddiqui
It was said the war on Iraq was coming after the Islamic holy month of
Ramadan. That was three months ago. Then it was supposed to be coming
right after the annual Muslim pilgrimage of Haj.
That was a month ago.
The delay is instructive.
People power can propel governments to gum up the works of the world's
biggest war machine, even if briefly.
Now that the threat of a veto has forced the United States to postpone a
United Nations vote, if only temporarily, the Canadian compromise, or a
version thereof, is back in play.
But as reasonable as Jean Chrétien's, and now Tony Blair's, proposal to
give Iraq a new deadline may sound, it is deeply flawed.
It only postpones war. In fact, it guarantees it by pre-authorizing war
in case Iraq does not disarm. We know now what the U.S. will say then:
that Iraq has not complied.
More than a new deadline — which only the inspectors should set, anyway —
we need clearer rules to end Iraqi dodging on the one hand and American
rush to war on the other.
Chrétien has been courageous in stating categorically that Canada is not
in the business of "regime change."
Also, that Canada will not join the war without U.N. authorization.

He needs to clarify three more points, to light our own path ahead.

·   It
is the U.N., not the U.S., that should set the "benchmarks" for
Iraq and also make the final call on whether Iraq is in breach.
·   The
U.N. authority to go to war must be clear, not implicit.
Should the Canadian/British proposal go nowhere, the Americans and the
British will likely revert to their current position, which is to
not ask the Security Council to vote on the use of force but
rather on whether Saddam Hussein is in breach of U.N. resolutions. That
would not constitute a full U.N. mandate for war, the way most Canadians
would understand.

Canada should refuse to join the war under such a circumstance.
·   In
case the Anglo-American resolution is vetoed but does win a majority of
nine votes, Canada should not accept the predictable American spin that
the outcome somehow legitimizes unilateral American action.

A veto is a veto, whatever one thinks of this outdated mechanism. In
having to swallow it, America will taste its own medicine.
It has cast more vetoes than any democracy. Only the Soviet Union and
its successor state, Russia, have cast more, 117 to 73.
Chrétien needs to hold firm to his commitment to the international
rule of law.
He should not be offering to hold the back door open for George W. Bush
to rush out to a war which lacks both legal and moral legitimacy.
The Bush administration's staggering dishonesty can best be seen in the
number of times the U.N. inspectors have had to shoot down its
unsubstantiated assertions.
Both Hans Blix and Mohamed ElBaradei are seasoned international civil
servants who understand the value of non-partisanship.
But they felt compelled to set the record straight.
First, Blix:
No, his inspectors were not spied on. No, the Iraqis could not have had
advance knowledge of the sites to be inspected. No, he did not think
Iraqi agents were posing as scientists, or that real scientists were
being whisked out of the country to avoid interrogations.
No, he found no evidence of Iraqis hiding or moving banned materials in
or out of the country.
No, he did not believe that Iraq had cleaned up some sites before
inspections, as Colin Powell alleged, using before and after satellite
pictures that Blix exposed as having been taken "several weeks
apart."
No, the trucks that Powell identified as mobile labs producing biological
weapons were not in the germ warfare business; they were carrying
food-tasting and seed-processing equipment.
No, Iraq had not hidden the long-range missiles that the inspectors
ordered destroyed: "These weapons were declared; they were not
clandestine."
No, he found no evidence that Iraq was producing and storing chemical or
biological weapons in underground bunkers.
No, he saw no persuasive evidence of Iraqi links to Al Qaeda. "There
are other states where there appear to be stronger links."
Now, ElBaradei:
No, there was no uranium bought from Niger. Documents purporting to show
that were forged.
No, the International Atomic Energy Agency found no evidence that
high-strength aluminum tubes were imported for uranium enrichment.
Even if they were, it was unlikely that Iraq had the capacity to redesign
them for such usage.
No, there is no evidence of Iraq using imported high-strength magnets in
its nuclear program.
No, there is no evidence of a resumption of "prohibited nuclear or
nuclear-related activities."
Despite being contradicted on so many fronts, Powell is now saying with a
straight face that he has "new information" that Iraq is
building new missiles as the inspectors are destroying the old ones.
That's

Protesters force danish army to flee

The danish protests against a war in Iraq took a turn from demonstations to
direct action when 200 activists forced the pre-mature departure of warship
"Olfert Fischer" from Korsoer, Denmark. "Olfert Fischers'" mission is to
participate in a NATO-drill in the mediterranian and thereby preparing war
on Iraq.
When the activists arrived at the military-base to find that "Olfert
Fischer" had allready left, they celebrated the news.
"This prove that the struggle to prevent war can be won." Said Global Roots
spokesperson Lars Grenaa. "The army had prepare the departure of Olfert
Fischer as media-show to make war look nice and tidy. Today we have forced
the military to change their plans, we showed that war is not good looking
young men in uniforms, but a bloody, unhuman business."
Activists cut through the military fences and invaded the base. Some
activist managed to climb the houses, and from the seaside activists blocked
the harbour in a small motorboat. It seemed clear that if Olfert Fischer had
still been at Korsoer, it would have been stranded in the dock.
As a response to the activists intrusion, the police attacked the
demonstrators outside the base, and forced the demonstration away from the
fences. The demonstration continued towards a nearby harbour to meet the
sailing activists, and the day ended without further encunters. 13 activists
were arrested and charged with trespassing, vandalism and attempted
vandalism.
The protests are part of worldwide activities against the war. Activities
that have allready closed down harbours in Greece, and blocked trains in
Italy. "The preporations for war continue dispite the fact that millions of
demonstrators showed opposition to the war on february 15. The
demonstrations will continue, but direct action is now also a part of the
war against war. It is our duty as human to sabotage the build up for war."
Global Roots say in a press-release following the protests in Korsoer.

Operation Winston.

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat

In 1927 Winston Churchill ordered the gassing of Kurdish tribesman,
rationalizing his decision on the basis that the Kurds were "uncivilized."
Thousands died in the gas attacks.

In 1941, Winston Churchill ordered British scientists to commence an urgent
program to develop weaponized anthrax for use against Nazi-occupied Europe.
He knew from the outset that such an attack would kill both occupied and
occupiers alike. The plan was never implemented, but not because of
humanitarian concerns; the scientists encountered (or at least they claimed
to have encountered)tremendous technical obstacles in their attempts to
weaponize the anthrax cultures they produced. This and other technical
difficulties resulted in the abandonment of the project.

Winston Churchill was responsible for the deaths of many thousands of his
own countrymen. Although the British government had cracked the German
Enigma cipher and knew ahead of time the exact timetable for the Nazi
bombings of major British population centers, Churchill decided not to
order evacuations or otherwise alert residents of targeted areas. He feared
that warning the people would signal to the Nazis that the Enigma code had
been broken, and felt that allowing thousands to be killed in the bombings
would serve as a positive indication the code was secure.

This journalist has learned from a source inside the foreign ministry that
the meeting this weekend amongst British, US and Spanish leaders is infact
a War Council, NOT a diplomatic meeting as is being reported in mainstream
news. US Troops have been placed on 'hair trigger alert' and the war could
very well begin monday or in the early hours of tuesday. All emergency
actions should be prepared to happen this week.

A source known to me in the government has informed me the war will likely
begin on Mon-Weds. The indication of this will be a lie of an Iraqi attack
on US troops in Kuwait or in the western desert. Emergency actions should
be planned to take place early this week.

The Kosher Nostra and Uncle Sams Uncle Tom Colin Powell, the liars liar.

Colin Powell and the Marketing of Uncle Sam
Afnan Hussein Fatani, Special to Arab News

And they will say (on the Day of Judgment): “Our Lord! Indeed we obeyed our
leaders and our elders and they led us astray. Our Lord! Give them double
the punishment and curse them a great curse.”

(The Qur’an: 33:66-68)

Nelson Mandela was right. The bribing, bullying, horse-trading and
warmongering we are witnessing in the world today are all because there’s a
black man sitting at the helm of the United Nations. From Guinea, the
poorest and smallest country in Africa, to Bush’s America, “the greatest
nation, and the greatest people, on the face of the earth ” — no one seems
to bother what the black secretary-general of the United Nations thinks or
what he plans to do. He’s simply become inaudible and invisible. But
Mandela forgot to add another pathetic figure to his list of black leaders
who have distorted the shape of our world simply by being black. That man
is Colin Powell, the US secretary of state.

The problem with Powell started when he hired advertising executives to
improve the US image in Arab countries — indeed in the entire world. He has
been quoted as saying that a professional who once sold Uncle Ben’s Rice to
the nation was the perfect person to sell Uncle Sam to the world. But this
is exactly the type of false analogical thinking and superficial reasoning
that has marred Powell’s logic ever since he transformed from dove to
wolf-in-sheep’s-skin. Just because both phrases share the same word
“uncle,” that doesn’t mean that “Ben” and “Sam” are the same. In fact, both
products are radically in opposition. Uncle Ben’s Rice literally sold
itself because it was good, nutritious and healthy; Uncle Sam isn’t selling
because the product is bad, unwholesome and malevolent. Powell can no more
sell his stale product than a grocery store can sell rotten apples and
tomatoes, except to the starved and dying of the world, except to the
famine-struck African peoples of Guinea, Angola and Cameroon. There are
three questions that Powell needs to ask himself: Is it ethical to wax down
his rotten produce and sell it off as nutritious and healthy food? If
health-conscious people aren’t buying, is it moral to shove it down their
throats? When all attempts at marketing a tainted Uncle Sam failed, was it
ethical to capitalize on his own credibility and his credentials as a
war-hero? Charlotte Beers, the advertising executive hired to improve the
US image resigned last Monday, citing the frightening “gap between who we
are and how we wish to be seen — and how we are in fact seen.” That is the
kind of professionalism that the world expects from America. That is
American ethics at its best.

Powell’s subtle method of lying has become a stable strategy used by almost
all US government officials, including of course the US president himself.
The effectiveness of this strategy lies in its sheer simplicity; one merely
falsifies truths by creatively manipulating a constant variable — a digit,
a letter, a color, a shape, a name, a date of birth or place of origin.
Powell first used the method in his PowerPoint presentation to the UN when
he tried to convince us that the rabbit shape we see in the moon really is
a live gigantic rabbit. It has now become something of a global joke that
the only established link between Al-Qaeda and Iraq is the letter “q” found
in both words. Notice, for example, the digital link used by Bush when he
claimed in his first speech after the tragedy of Sept. 11 that 130 Israelis
had died in the twin towers when the correct number was actually 3 (out of
the 3,000 Israeli employees that were supposed to have been in the WTC at
the time of the explosions). Powell found an ingenious three-in-one link
between Al-Qaeda, Iraq and Palestinians. Al-Zarqawi, he told us at the UN,
was an Al-Qaeda terrorist operating in Northern Iraq and also a Jordanian
of Palestinian origin. To make this link stick, Powell had to falsify a few
basic facts.

— First, that Al-Zarqawi is operating in the American-controlled No-fly
Zone and hence outside the jurisdiction of the Iraqi government

— Second, that he is of pure Jordanian descent from the Al-Khalaylah tribe,
one of the tribes of the Bani Hasan clan.

The question is, even if Al-Zarqawi was of Palestinian origin, does that
prove that Palestinians are terrorists? What about John Walker, the
American Taleban? Shouldn’t his origins be used to link Americans to
terrorism and Al-Qaeda?

There is something nauseating about watching a once dignified and
trustworthy black war-hero having to lie, deceive and cajole just to find
favor with his rich Texan boss. Last week, we watched in utter shock as
Colin Powell promised the Arab world in an interview with the newly
launched Arab TV station, Al-Arabia, that the invasion of Iraq would be
“short.” Yes, we all know how “short” and sweet the bombing campaign will
be in Iraq. In a

The Superpower that we are.

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat
The emerging superpower of peace
March 15, 2003
Amidst the agonizing crisis over Iraq, the violent contortions of the
world's only military superpower have given birth to a transcendental
force: the global Superpower of Peace.

That George W. Bush's obsession with Saddam Hussein has become a global
issue at all is perhaps the most tangible proof of this new superpower's
potential clout.

Only one thing has slowed (or stopped) Bush from launching this
attack: the economic, political, moral and spiritual power of an
intangible human network determined to stop this war.

Bush has amassed the most powerful killing machine humankind has ever
created. He's set its fuse on the borders of an impoverished desert nation
with no credible ability to protect itself from this unprecedented
attack. His military henchmen believe the conquest of this small country
can be done quickly, with relatively few casualties on the the attacking
side (though many civilians would die on the Iraqi side, as they did in the
1991 Gulf War I).

The potential prizes are enormous:

· Outright control of the world's second-largest oil reserve;
· Removal of Bush's hated personal rival, a US Frankenstein gone bad;
· A pivotal military base in the heart of the Middle East;
· Hugely lucrative contracts for both the destroyers and the rebuilders of
Iraq;
· The ability to test a new generation of ultra high-tech weaponry;
· The chance to display the awesome killing power of that weaponry;
· The chance to demonstrate a willingness to use that power;
· The fulfillment of Biblical prophesy as seen through the eyes of
religious fanatics.

But after months of preparation, the world's only military superpower has
hesitated. Instead of obliterating Baghdad---as it physically could at any
time---the Bush cabal has flinched.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says he needs no military allies. But
he's desperately courting them.

Bush says he doesn't need UN approval. But he's desperately sought it.

Why?

One could argue the US has been marking time because it's not quite ready,
with deployments and other technical needs not yet met.

But all that is now far more difficult with an astounding rejection by
Turkey, which shares a strategic border with Iraq. Turkish opposition to
war is running a fierce 80-90%. Major arm-twisting (and a $26 billion
bribe) has not bought permission to use Turkish land and air space.

Meanwhile, the "no" votes of China, Russia, France and Germany represent
the official opinion of some 2 billion people. They are irrelevant to the
mechanics of armed conquest. But the four nay-sayers represent enormous
political and economic power. So do scores of other nations whose nervous
millions now march for peace.

"Never before in the history of the world has there been a global, visible,
public, viable, open dialogue and conversation about the very legitimacy of
war," says Robert Muller, a long-time UN guiding light who views this
global resistance as virtually miraculous.

To all this has been added the opposition of the Pope. The Bush cabal may
be asking that infamous question: "How many divisions does the Pope have?"

But about a quarter of the US---and its armed forces---are Catholics. They
may soon be forced to choose between the opinion of their infallible
spiritual leader and that of their unelected president.

The Pope has already been asked to put himself between the people of
Baghdad and a US attack. He could also speak "ex cathedra," banning
Catholic participation in the war.

Meanwhile the spiritual opposition has been joined by a wide spectrum of
religious organizations, including Bush's own church. Though constantly
speaking in religious terms, Bush has refused to meet with the broad range
of clerics who oppose his war.

Meanwhile, worldwide demonstrations are growing bigger and more
focused. In Britain one wonders if the next march might shut down London
or the entire country. Massive civil disobedience is inevitable at dozens
of US embassies. Consumer boycotts are likely to erupt with staggering
force.

Within the US, the fiercest opposition may well be coming from Wall
Street. Specific corporations such as Dick Cheney's Halliburton and
Richard Perle's consulting firm stand to make a fortune from Gulf War
II. But mainstream financial and commercial institutions are
understandably terrified. The American economy is already staggering under
deep recession. Bush's tax cuts will yield stratospheric deficits for
decades to come. The US economy now bears the sickly pallor of a
collapsing empire.

With war, a depressed stock market that hates instability could well plunge
another 25-50%. Next would come the worldwide boycott of American
products. China counts a billion-plus citizens and a rapidly emerging
economic powerhouse. France and Germany dominate the European Union, which
will soon outstrip the US in gross output---and consumer spending. A

The demonstration was organized by the biggest and the most radical Italian

what have been working against the war to Irak, have joined.
(In Italy there are 3 main trade unions, they have always moved together

unity, signing a separate agreement with the other two, UIL and CISL. The
objective of the action of the governement was CGIL and its radical

for strike, the biggest demonstration in the whole world history took
place: about one year ago 3 millions people were in Roma to defend their
right not to be kicked out "without a valid reason". The new law against

In Italy the movement against the war is collecting more and more

35-40% people are in favour of non violent but illegal actions of

Mega Tsunami coming from an Atlantic Island.EAST COAST ALERT!

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat
En español / In Spanish

Scattered across the world’s oceans are a handful of rare geological
time-bombs. Once unleashed they create an extraordinary phenomenon, a
gigantic tidal wave, far bigger than any normal tsunami, able to cross
oceans and ravage countries on the other side of the world. Only recently
have scientists realised the next episode is likely to begin at the Canary
Islands, off North Africa, where a wall of water will one day be created
which will race across the entire Atlantic ocean at the speed of a jet
airliner to devastate the east coast of the United States. America will
have been struck by a mega-tsunami.

Back in 1953 two geologists travelled to a remote bay in Alaska looking for
oil. They gradually realised that in the past the bay had been struck by
huge waves, and wondered what could have possibly caused them. Five years
later, they got their answer. In 1958 there was a landslide, in which a
towering cliff collapsed into the bay, creating a wave half a kilometre
high, higher than any skyscraper on Earth. The true destructive potential
of landslide-generated tsunami, which scientists named "Mega-tsunami",
suddenly began to be appreciated. If a modest-sized landslide in Alaska
could create a wave of this size, what havoc could a really huge landslide
cause?

Scientists now realise that the greatest danger comes from large volcanic
islands, which are particularly prone to these massive landslides.
Geologists began to look for evidence of past landslides on the sea bed,
and what they saw astonished them. The sea floor around Hawaii, for
instance, was covered with the remains of millions of years’ worth of
ancient landslides, colossal in size.

But huge landslides and the mega-tsunami that they cause are extremely rare
- the last one happened 4,000 years ago on the island of Réunion. The
growing concern is that the ideal conditions for just such a landslide -
and consequent mega-tsunami - now exist on the island of La Palma in the
Canaries.

In 1949 an eruption occurred on the unspoiled Canary Island of La Palma. As
magma inflated the volcano, the entire western flank—an immense pile of
rock totaling 200 cubic kilometers—dropped four meters seaward then
stopped. This huge rock mass still hangs over the western Atlantic, ready
to slide into the sea at any moment.
The legacy of this collapse will herald calamity for all living around the
margins of the Atlantic Basin, as colossal waves—initially up to 200 meters
high—fan out from the island.
Thousand-ton boulders hurled 20 meters above sea level and kilometer-long
wedges of sand rammed between the islands testify to what happened when
tsunami from the last Canary Island collapse pounded into the Bahamas, eons
ago. Next time, the Caribbean and the east coast of the U.S. will suffer
the same fate, and the destruction will be on a scale never before experienced.
What we must remember is that this is not science fiction. It is a question
of when, not if, part of La Palma collapses into the Atlantic.
http://countdown.org/end/earthquakes_12.htm#ear_above_us_the_waves
There is also evidence of Mega Tsunamis in Hawaii following similar
incidents in the past and one developing now on Maui.

Kansas' party ban remains
By SARAH KESSINGER
Harris News Service
TOPEKA -- What Ellsworth Rep. Josh Svaty thought was a "little
nothing bill" turned into a lively First Amendment debate this week
and restored a ban of the Communist Party from Kansas politics.
The measure, Senate Bill 95, breezed through the Senate earlier this
year, but hit a wall Wednesday in the House Elections and Local
Government Committee.
The bill was a request from Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh, who said
current law is unconstitutional.
The statute's wording currently bars certain political parties from
filing in Kansas and includes a 1941-imposed restriction on the Communist
Party.
The section on communists also bans groups that instigate the overthrow
of government through violence.
Committee member Svaty, a Democrat, said he was surprised at the
committee meeting when legislators began to amend the bill to restore the
ban on communists. He viewed it as clearly anti-democratic.
"The whole reason that this country is different is because we have
freedoms that other countries don't have," Svaty said Friday.
The amended bill passed the committee 7-6. It is now before the full
House.
Jesse Borjon, a spokesman for Thornburgh, said the law is ineffective in
its current form.
"Banning certain political parties from filing for office has been
ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court," Borjon said.

The high court has ruled that barring certain political parties violated
the First Amendment right to free speech and freedom of association.

"If we don't repeal those statutes, they stay on the books, and we
can't enforce them," Borjon said. "It wasn't something we
thought was controversial."
Committee member Arlen Siegfreid, R-Olathe, supported restoring the
language. He said veterans on the committee were concerned about removing
the communist ban.
Also, he said, the majority of the committee thought it was foolish to
remove the language on violence "when we're chasing terrorists all
over the world for that very reason."
It is disturbing, Svaty said, "that since September 11 we've seen
these sorts of First Amendment rights completely dissolve before our
eyes, and no one's doing much about it."
"I took an oath to stand up for these constitutional rights,"
he said.
Svaty said his arguments to the committee were met with, "You're
young, you don't remember the days when we had to hide under desks for
bombing drills."

Bloody Oil since 1989.

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat
In 1989, the State Department released a report that described in gruesome
detail Iraq's violation of human rights, specifically how Iraq's President
Saddam Hussein tortured his own people for allegedly being disloyal.

But despite the atrocities outlined in the report, which President Bush now
refers to when speaking about his desire to remove Hussein from power, the
United States, under the first Bush Administration, refused to vote in
favor of a United Nations resolution calling for an inquiry into Iraq's
treatment of its population and possibly indicting Hussein for war crimes
and human rights abuses.

The two people most vocal about refusing to go along with the U.N.
investigation are now lobbying for a U.N. resolution authorizing an
invasion of Iraq and are highly critical of the countries that refuse to
back a U.S. led coalition to use military force to remove Hussein from
power. Those men are Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary
of State Richard Armitage.

But in 1989, the first Bush administration refused to join the U.N. in
publicly protesting the forced relocation of at least half a million ethnic
Kurds and Syrians in the late 1980s, even though the act violated
principles of the 1948 Genocide Convention, according to Middle East Watch,
a human rights organization.

The Bush and Reagan administrations also declined to punish Iraq when it
used poison gas against Iranian soldiers in 1984 and Kurdish citizens in
1988. Moreover, the U.S. did not oppose the fact that Hussein bought 45
American helicopters, worth about $200 million, with assurances they were
for civilian use, then transferred them to his military.

Armitage said in 1990 that that "in retrospect, it would have been much
better at the time of their use of gas if we'd put our foot down,"
according to an August 1990 story in the Los Angeles Daily News.

Despite U.S. intelligence reports that showed Iraq's capability of building
weapons of mass destruction and its inhumane treatment of its own
civilians, the Bush Administration turned a blind eye and instead focused
on improving U.S. relations with Hussein. The U.S. removed Iraq from its
list of countries supporting terrorism in 1983, which reopened the door to
federal subsidies and loans to Iraq.

Saddam Hussein "made it clear that Iraq was not interested in making
mischief in the world," Rumsfeld said, who, as a Middle East envoy for the
Regan Administration, reopened discussions with Saddam in 1983, according
to the Daily News story. "It struck us as useful to have a relationship
with him."

The current Bush Administration, many of whom served in the Reagan and the
first Bush administrations, refuse to acknowledge that their policies
toward Iraq at the time backfired and we may be paying a price for it now.
But at this point, Iraq does not pose a threat to the U.S. and threats
against the nation appear to be purely personal.

Under former Rumsfeld's watch during his years in the Reagan and Bush
administrations, he and the former presidents allowed Hussein to build his
army and a cache of chemical and nuclear weapons. In fact, many of the
hawks that serve in the current Bush Administration assisted Hussein's
regime in reaching these goals during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

For example, Judicial Watch said, according to the Daily News story, "that
the U.S. extended $270 million in government-guaranteed credit from the
Export-Import Bank to buy other American goods, despite repeated failures
to make loan repayments on time. Since 1982, Baghdad has become one of the
biggest buyers of U.S. rice and wheat, purchasing $5.5 billion in crops and
livestock with federally guaranteed loans and agricultural subsidies and
its own hard cash."

"Iraq benefited from a thriving grain trade with American farmers,
cooperation with U.S. intelligence agencies, oil sales to American refiners
that helped finance its military, and muted White House criticism of its
human rights and war atrocities," the Daily News story said.

Armitage admitted in 1990 that the Reagan and Bush administrations were
well aware of Hussein's brutality, but still, the U.S. was more interested
in maintaining a healthy relationship with Iraq because the country's vast
oil reserves was beneficial to U.S. interests.

"We knew this wasn't the League of Women Voters," Armitage said, referring
to Hussein's regime, according to the Daily News story.

Bunkerbusters needed...for Cheney.

While
chants of "No War for Oil" mark an increasingly dissenting and
skeptical public, the Bush administration has continued bulldozing its
way towards a crushing Iraq rendezvous. As you read this war may already
have begun. But startling in its candor, a US Department of Defense
document has just been discovered, a top-level document specifically
discussing war for oil. This is the first official document found
explicitly confirming as policy the US Defense Department's readiness to
wage oil war.
According to the report--Strategic Assessment 1999--prepared for the US
Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Secretary of Defense (and only recently
unearthed by this journalist), "energy and resource issues will
continue to shape international security". Explicitly envisioned
were potential oil "conflicts over production facilities and
transportation routes", particularly in the Persian Gulf and Caspian
regions.
Paradoxically, Strategic Assessment 1999 forecast it was "most
likely" that America would not need to "employ military
forces" to obtain energy. But the Assessment nevertheless ranks as
extraordinary, doing so because it positively documents an official
willingness to wage oil war, a willingness at the very highest levels of
the US defense community.
While the document was prepared under Clinton, it suggests he was willing
to wage war only to protect what he perceived as the existing interests
of America's economy. In contrast, war critics have repeatedly charged
that Bush is seeking to conquer new interests, not defend old one's.
Clinton may have opened the door, but Bush marched through it.
In what many will see as a disturbing parallel to present events, the
Report also drew attention to pre-WWII Britain's pursuit of an approach
where "control over territory was seen as essential to ensuring
resource supplies". However, the defense policymakers authoring
Strategic Assessment also appear cognizant of the potential consequences
of such policies. The authors warned that if the great powers should
return to "the 19th century approach" of securing resources, of
conquering resource suppliers, "the world economy would suffer and
world politics would become more tense".
Although at the time of its writing, Strategic Assessment 1999 predicted
adequate US energy supplies, it also found that supply shortages
"could exacerbate underlying political differences and serve as a
catalyst for regional conflicts", illustrating oil war's potential
trigger. And the Bush administration has repeatedly stated that America
is facing what has been termed an "energy crisis".
Highlighting the Assessment's importance, it was prepared by the
Institute for National Strategic Studies, part of the US Department of
Defense's National Defense University. The Institute is located at Fort
McNair in Washington, DC, and lists its primary mission as policy
"research and analysis" for the Joint Chiefs, the Defense
Secretary, and other key US Governmental security and defense bodies. But
this DOD "smoking gun" is linked to another.
In 2001 US VP Dick Cheney headed the Bush administration's National
Energy Policy Development Group, an energy task force working to devise a
National Energy Policy to address America's looming shortages. In line
with the defense policy outlined in Strategic Assessment, it had been
urged that Cheney's task force include DOD participation. And so it will
surprise few that the Bush administration has been going to extraordinary
lengths to conceal both who attended the Cheney energy task force's
meetings and what those meetings were about.
Commenting upon the nature of this concealment, Congressman Henry Waxman
(D-CA), the ranking member of the Committee on Government Reform, said
"The White House should simply try telling the truth on the Task
Force's activities and stop hiding information that Congress and the
public have a right to see." The Administration's stonewalling also
spawned a lawsuit by the General Accounting Office (GAO), the
investigative arm of Congress.
The Cheney Task force confrontation resulted in the GAO pursuing the
first lawsuit in its 81 year history, though, that suit was dismissed
this December by Judge John Bates, a recent Bush appointee. Bates'
decision found that the GAO had "no standing" to sue Cheney or
any other executive branch official for information.
In a sharp reflection upon that decision, John Dean (the former
Republican Presidential Counsel) wrote, "the present situation is
absurd". Dean charged that Bates' ruling means an ordinary US
citizen has more power to compel the release of government information
than the investigative arm of America's Congress.
Cutting to what many perceive as the ruling's true basis, Congressman
John Dingle (D-MI), ranking member of the Committee on Energy and
Commerce, charged "Vice President Cheney's cover-up will apparently
continue for the foreseeable future". And summarizing the key
question, the former US Vice-Presidential candidate, Sen. Joseph
Lieber

U.S. Marine shot in the neck.

CAMP UDAIRI, Kuwait -- This may surprise the folks back home, but the U.S.
Army forces massing across the Iraqi border are largely unarmed.
Even though all U.S. soldiers deployed to the six main Army camps in
northern Kuwait must carry their rifles at all times -- even to the latrine
in the middle of the night -- few are carrying any bullets.
This is not an oversight, or a lame-brained cost-saving measure ordered by
the Pentagon, or an indication that American military leaders believe they
can take Iraq without firing a shot.
Rather, it's an effort to stave off the sad inevitable: Once the Army
starts issuing ammo en masse, soldiers will accidentally shoot themselves
and each other.
Those who served in Afghanistan, Desert Storm and other conflicts can
attest to it.
At Wednesday's morning briefing at Camp Udairi, American leaders were told
that four soldiers in the British sector were injured when one of their
rifles accidentally discharged.
Last week, a U.S. Marine was shot in the neck by an officer who was
cleaning his pistol in another tent. He survived but required major
surgery, doctors said.
Officers say the safety risk far outweighs the security risk.
"We may be rolling the dice, but I can guarantee that you're not going to
have any large forces rolling across the border and over-running our camp,"
said Maj. Spencer Smith, a logistics coordinator for the 101st Airborne
Division.
In the meantime, the soldiers patrolling the perimeter and the sentinels
have all the rounds they could ever need. The Apache and Black Hawk
helicopters patrolling the skies above the camps can quickly bring a
hellstorm of cannon and missile fire on any approaching enemy, and Patriot
missile batteries stand ready to shoot down any Iraqi Scud missiles.
Smith and others couldn't recall a combat deployment where the bulk of
troops remained without bullets for so long. Some got here in December,
although most of the 101st Airborne arrived about 10 days ago.
Many soldiers say they feel silly carrying empty guns.
"If something kicks up, we're s--- out of luck," said Pfc. Jessica Ruth,
19, of Florence, S.C., supply clerk in the Division Supply Command of the
101st Airborne.
At the same time, she said, "I don't feel comfortable with (ammo) because
we got some careless people around here."
On base, it's easy to tell which soldiers are ready for ammunition.
Infantrymen -- who have been given some bullets -- and former infantrymen
wield their weapons as deftly as a chef handles a knife and saute pan. The
M-4 rifle is the tool of their trade, and they practice with it for hours a
day. It is an extension of themselves.

USA Suez Crisis.

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat
WASHINGTON - The United States is moving about 10 Navy ships armed with
Tomahawk cruise missiles from the eastern Mediterranean to the Red Sea,
senior U.S. officials said yesterday. The move indicates weakening U.S.
confidence that Turkey will grant overflight rights for U.S. planes and
missiles.
From the Red Sea, the cruisers, destroyers and submarines would be able to
launch their Tomahawks - typically fired in the opening hours of a war -
for flights over Saudi Arabia to targets in Iraq.
The ships are part of the USS Harry S. Truman and USS Theodore Roosevelt
carrier battle groups, which have been operating in the eastern
Mediterranean for weeks in expectation of war against Iraq.
No decision has been made to move the carriers from the Mediterranean, but
that could be the next step, the officials said, speaking on condition of
anonymity. Each carrier has about 80 aircraft aboard.
It had been hoped that the Tomahawks could cross Turkey's airspace, but the
Turkish government has not granted overflight rights.
Tomahawks are satellite-guided missiles usually used in the opening stages
of war to strike high-value, fixed targets such as government buildings in
areas where the risk of civilian casualties is relatively high.
The Tomahawks are designed to evade radar by skimming the land or sea and
were designed in the mid-1980s. After the Persian Gulf war, they became one
of the U.S. weapons of choice to respond to Iraqi breaches of United
Nations sanctions.
The issue of overflight rights for U.S. missiles and planes has been
overshadowed by the Bush administration's struggle to win Turkey's approval
to base 60,000 or more U.S. troops there for a northern front against Iraq.
The Turkish parliament rejected the U.S. request for basing rights this
month, and Pentagon officials said yesterday that it appears increasingly
unlikely that the Army would position its 4th Infantry Division in Turkey,
as was planned.

Suitcase surprise: Rebuke written on inspection notice
By Susan Gilmore
Seattle Times staff reporter
Seth Goldberg says that when he opened his suitcase in San Diego after a
flight from Seattle this month, the two "No Iraq War" signs
he'd picked up at the Pike Place Market were still nestled among his
clothes.
But there was a third sign, he said, that shocked him. Tucked in his
luggage was a card from the Transportation Security Administration
notifying him that his bags had been opened and inspected at
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Handwritten on the side of the card
was a note, "Don't appreciate your anti-American attitude!"

"I found it chilling and a little Orwellian to have received this
message," said Goldberg, 41, a New Jersey resident who was in
Seattle visiting longtime friend Davis Oldham, a University of Washington
instructor.
Goldberg says that when he took his suitcase off the airplane in San
Diego, the zipper pulls were sealed with nylon straps, which indicated
TSA had inspected the luggage. It would be hard, he said, for anyone else
to have gotten inside his bags.
TSA officials say they are looking into the incident. "We do not
condone our employees making any kind of political comments or personal
comments to any travelers," TSA spokeswoman Heather Rosenker told
Reuters. "That is not acceptable."
Goldberg, who is restoring a historic home in New Jersey, said he picked
up the "No Iraq War" signs because he hadn't seen them in New
Jersey and wanted to put them up at his house.
"In New Jersey there's very little in the way of protest and when I
got to Seattle I was amazed how many anti-war signs were up in front of
houses," he said. "I'm not a political activist but was
distressed by the way the country was rolling off to war."
Goldberg said he checked two bags at Sea-Tac on March 2 and traveled to
San Diego on Alaska Airlines. The TSA station was adjacent to the Alaska
check-in counter.
Nico Melendez, western regional spokesman for the TSA, said the note in
Goldberg's luggage will be investigated, but he said there's no proof
that a TSA employee wrote it. "It's a leap to say it was a TSA
screener," Melendez said.
But Goldberg said, "It seems a little far-fetched to think people
are running around the airport writing messages on TSA literature and
slipping them into people's bags."
He says TSA should take responsibility and refocus its training "so
TSA employees around the country are not trampling people's civil rights,
not intimidating or harassing travelers. That's an important issue."

Oldham, the UW instructor, said he was so upset by the incident he wrote
members of Congress. U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., has asked TSA for
a response.
"The Senator certainly agrees with you that it is completely
inappropriate for a public employee to write their opinion of your or
your friend's political opinion," said Jay Pearson, aide to
Cantwell, in a letter to Oldham. He said he expects it may take a month
or more to hear back from the TSA.
"I just thought it was outrageous," Oldham said. "It's one
of many things happening recently where the government is outstepping its
bounds in the midst of paranoia."

Sexual Autonomy Now.

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat
SINCE no subject today seems to be wanting for a cultural history, no
subject is unimaginable. Not even masturbation, even though it is as close
to a sexual taboo as you can get in the 21st century.

Thomas Laqueur, a history professor at the University of California,
Berkeley, delivers his most penetrating observation in his penultimate
footnote (and there are 70 pages of them). "In general, masturbation is
that rare thing in modern talk about sexuality: something best left
unspoken and so discomfiting that it can only be broached by a joke," he
writes. Bill Clinton sacked his surgeon-general for saying the dread word
at a press conference, which is a joke, surely.

Mr Laqueur reports that, in the experiences of pollsters, only personal
income provokes as much reticence. Yet masturbation is a common, if not
shared experience, in both men and women. The author covers everything
there is to say about the subject, often saying it twice or even three
times. We learn that to describe it as onanism is to misread Genesis. Onan
spilled his seed on the ground, not as an act of solitary sex, but because
he did not wish to impregnate the wife of his late brother. The biblical
reference gave his name to a book published in 1712 and titled "Onania", a
clever concoction of salacious case studies of the act, coupled with stern
disapproval of it. The book went through many editions; both author and
publisher made a decent profit; Mr Laqueur identifies it as a landmark in
masturbation studies because its publication defines the moment when
solitary sex "moved from the distant moral horizon to the ethical foreground."

The University of California at Berkeley hosts a biography for Thomas
Laqueur. AfraidToAsk.com hosts a masturbation guide with a medical viewpoint.

Masturbation was denounced by teachers, doctors and churchmen as the vice
of vices, punished by dreadful physical symptoms, from desiccated limbs to
blindness. To prevent it, specialist manufacturers offered erection alarms,
penis cases, sleeping mitts and hobbles to stop girls from spreading their
legs. Freud was exercised by it throughout his life. But the medical case
against masturbation did not survive beyond the 1920s, and by the end of
the century it had become, in some circles, "a model of self-sufficiency,
moral autonomy and freedom from the overweening power of patriarchy and
heterosexuality." It was especially respectable in feminist and gay circles.

At the start of a new millennium masturbation supports profitable
businesses selling pornography and vibrators. One thing cultural history
shows is that there really is nothing in the world from which ingenious
people won't make money.

Shrub is trying to use spit in a sand storm.

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat
We came back to my house and headed right for the shower immediately. We're
both letting it all hang out. I got out of the shower after she did, but
when I walked back into my room she was already dressed and on her way out
of the door, saying 'Bye-bye' as she left. I went back into the shower and
cried," a 27-year-old man tells Spa! (3/18).
It appears more Japanese women than ever are toying with guys, carrying
them to the brink and then suddenly pulling out before going all the way.

"Too many girls are prepared to have foreplay, but end it there," another
man moans. "They just don't understand how hard it is for a guy."

Perhaps it's because they realize how hard it is that the women are not
going all the way. But there're plenty of other reasons, too.

"Frankly speaking, foreplay is only a substitute for masturbation. I don't
need to have it inserted to climax. I do have urges, but I'm too
embarrassed about touching myself, so I use a guy for foreplay and then
call a stop when I'm satisfied," one woman tells Spa!

Another woman suggests her reasons for suddenly stopping could be for
fetishist reasons.

"Nothing gets me more excited than having an ugly guy nowhere near my ideal
type licking all over my body. That's more than enough," she says.

Women have even designed methods to guarantee they get foreplay and not a
guy who wants to go all the way.

"If I tell him that he'll get my venereal disease if he sticks it in, he
won't go near it," a 25-year-old woman says. "Of course, I don't have any
sort of venereal disease."

Some take even more radical steps.

"If I tell him I've got an illness, there goes any hope of oral. I just
stick a tampon in and say it's that time of the month. If there's something
in there already, they won't want to visit. And no guy has got the guts to
rip a tampon out," the 28-year-old trading company employee tells Spa!

More women refuse to go all the way because they want to taste their guys
in little doses, like a sommelier tasting wine. These women hold off until
they get the vintage they're looking for.

"First you have to check out his room. If it's a typically dirty bachelor
pad, I go straight home. But if it's done up to look like some gigolo's
lair I give him a miss, too," a 25-year-old woman says.

Some are in fact willing to go all the way, but end up refusing after
watching their partner perform a little.

"Nothing riles me more than a guy who'll notice I'm barely damp and try to
use spit instead of putting in a little bit more effort," a 25-year-old
woman says. "They can't make a fool of me that easily."

Sometimes the women just want their guys to be a little more forceful.

"We'll get around to the time to connect, but I have to tell him then that
he can't do it. It's not so much that I want to be seen as pure, but I
don't want to be seen as an easy lay, either. But the guy shouldn't give in
at those times," a 26-year-old woman says.

Refusing the guy a chance to go all the way can sometimes have practical
reasons, like the 26-year-old woman who likes to wear pricey lingerie
before the first time with a new partner.

"On the average female office workers wage, there's no way you could afford
to wear lace underwear every day," she moans to Spa! "Covering the weekends
alone is hard enough."

SCANDAL: A Scurrilous History of Gossip 1700-2000
By Roger Wilkes
Atlantic, 400pp, $49.95
This is good. Cancel the dentist (teeth whitening), the doctor (Vitamin B
shot). The Bold and The Beautiful doesn't stand a chance.

Roger Wilkes has dug into the troughs of muck and slime and produced a
riveting 300-year overview of scandal. A gottahave for gossip writers and
fans of the genre. I just hope it gets translated into 40 different
languages, including Japanese and Swahili.

Aaron Spelling, creator of Dallas and Dynasty, says gossip is "rich people
having problems that money can't solve". Satirist Francis Wheen says "it is
something interesting if true". According to Auberon Waugh, flamboyant
exponent of the art, "it's who is bedding whom where public figures are
concerned".

But it's more than that. It's the frisson experienced on dishing/hearing a
hot item for the first time. To read Wilkes is like whizzing through every
scandal ever published (he obviously had fun writing it). He unbuttons
obscure stuff such as who coined the phrases jet set, cafe society, glamour
girl, the roaring twenties, but more than that he reveals the forerunner of
the A-List (that archaic curiosity over which PRs still slaver).

In the late 19th century the American social lioness Mrs John Jacob Astor
asked her pal Ward McAllister to run up a list of eligibles for a ball she
was planning. He agreed - "after all, there are only 400 of us" - and the
press pounced. Naming New York's charmed circle was the way to go.

Then along came Colonel William Mann, the Saunterer in Town Topics, saying
"the 400 of New York is ... so shallow and unhealthy it deserves to be
derided incessantly". Thus: "Miss van Alen suffers from some kind of throat
trouble. She cannot go more than half an hour without a drink."

Wilkes is full of info any trainee gossip hack will find useful (I wish I'd
had a quarter of it during my stint on The Daily Express's William Hickey
diary). For instance, in 1704 Daniel Defoe, who devised the world's first
chatty newspaper column, pioneered the technique of keeping names secret
(as in K- was seen kissing I-). And The World's Edmund Yates, in
the 1870s, invented the personal voice that gossip columns aped 100 years
later. "I hear", "I understand" and "I learn" were coined by him. He even
went to jail for a woman reporter's paragraph that went wrong. (That's
three charming old habits due for revival, quick sticks.)

Wilkes is not out to get hacks. I suspect he's egging them on. With relish
he tells of Maury Paul, columnist for William Randolph Hearst's American,
saying, "Until you find a bomb every night in your car, until you be chased
from every club and are the fear of every hostess, you will not be a
newspaperman." Well, hear, hear.

But tough as it was in those days, it was nothing compared with the 20th
century, with lords Beaverbrook and Rothermere, vying for readers,
constantly sacking their gossip writers. They went from grubby reporters to
the literati whingeing about their calling. Sacheverell Sitwell wrote
Atticus in The Sunday Times and likened it to a truffle hunt. Malcolm
Muggeridge on the Evening Standard's gossip page found it "revoltingly
futile and exhausting". Harold Nicolson worked for Beaverbrook and yearned
to be out of "playing the spillikins of the press".

Only Nancy Mitford got a kick out of it, doing a column for The Lady: "a
freeloader's dream, going everywhere for free". Getting five guineas a
week, she treated herself to a "divine coral tiara - the family think I've
gone mad".

Chunks of famous scandals - Princess Diana et al - slow the pace, but as a
guide to evolving gossip it is hunky-dory. In the mid-'60s it was about
"social" people and events. In the '70s keyhole peeping returned and the
new celebrity culture moved to the front pages: rock singers, film stars,
TV actors, radio disc jockeys, nightclub owners and fashion models were
Fleet Street's popocracy. The writing became sharper, nastier and more
cutthroat than ever.

The Hello! launch in 1988 opened an obsequious, nice end of the gossiping
trade, paying targets fees as large as mobile numbers. Its most celebrated
front-page headline made news: "The Duke and Duchess of York Grant Us the
Most Personal of Interviews and for the First Time Ever Throw Open the
Doors of Their Home and Invite Us to Share Their Intimate Family Moments" -
for a reported £250,000 ($650,000).

But the height/depth of gossiparama has to be the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal,
launched in the computer age. Matt Drudge, cybercolumnist of the Drudge
Report, says "I don't call it journalism. I go where the stink is." And how.

Daphne Guinness is a former Fleet Street gossip columnist.

'Spartacus' Novelist Howard Fast, 88, Dies

Former Communist Party member Howard Fast wrote on class issues. (1988

By Adam Bernstein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, March 14, 2003; Page B07
Howard Fast, 88, the best-selling novelist whose books including
"Spartacus," "Freedom Road," "Citizen Tom Paine" and "Conceived in Liberty"
reflected his own struggles with justice, civil freedoms and the Communist
Party, died March 12 at his home in Old Greenwich, Conn. No cause of death
was reported.

Starting in 1933, Mr. Fast wrote more than 80 books but complained that he
did not have time to complete more. He also was a foreign correspondent,
playwright, political candidate and lecturer.

Historical romance, drama and biography were his metier, and his books,
which sold tens of millions of copies, were known for their gripping pace
and compelling storylines. "Conceived in Liberty: A Novel of Valley Forge"
(1939), the story of soldiers facing obstacles including starvation during
the Revolutionary War, was the first of his books to sell one million copies.

Many of his works were adapted for film and television. Several of his
stories were combined to become the basis for "Rachel and the Stranger"
(1948), a frontier romantic drama with William Holden, Loretta Young and
Robert Mitchum. His novel "Spartacus" (1951), about a slave revolt against
the Roman empire, became a popular 1960 film with Kirk Douglas, Laurence
Olivier and Tony Curtis.

"Mirage" (1965), the Gregory Peck thriller about an amnesiac, was based on
a story Mr. Fast wrote under a pseudonym, Walter Ericson.

Muhammad Ali starred in the 1979 made-for-television movie "Freedom Road"
(1979), based on Mr. Fast's novel about a former slave during the
Reconstruction Era who runs for political office and fights the Ku Klux Klan.

Many of his books from the 1940s and 1950s explored class and race
disparity in the United States and implicitly promoted what he then
considered a utopian Soviet system. In the 1950s, he was one of the most
high-profile authors in the United States to be jailed and blacklisted for
actions related to membership in the Communist Party.

In 1956, he publicly broke with the Communists after Joseph Stalin's
atrocities were noted in a speech by Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev.
His essays on leaving the party were published in The Washington Post, the
Saturday Review and other media outlets.

He wrote of joining the Communist Party in 1943, influenced by "a series of
dismal and underpaid jobs that I had held since, at the age of eleven,
pressed by the need of our utter poverty, I went to work as a newspaper
delivery boy."

He continued: "If we are to seek for understanding, any sort of
understanding, then the reader must not only recall the 1930s, but must
comprehend the full meaning of the surrender of childhood, a situation that
poverty still imposes on millions of children the world over."

Howard Melvin Fast was a native of New York. His father was an ironworker,
cable car gripper, tin factory worker and dress factory cutter. His mother
died shortly before he turned 10.

He was raised by various relatives and held all sorts of jobs. He sometimes
begged and stole food.

His later work at the New York Public Library led to his immersion in the
world of literature. He wrote his first book, the historical romance "Two
Valleys," when he was 18.

Increasingly, he blended class and race issues into his historical works,
strikingly in his bestseller "Freedom Road" (1944).

During Word War II, he worked for the Office of War Information and wrote
foreign dispatches for Esquire and Coronet magazines.

After the war, he began using his fiction to counter what he felt was a
prevailing American attitude against minority groups and labor unions.
Considered pro-Communist in theme, his books from that era -- including
"Clarkton," "My Glorious Brothers" and "The Proud and the Free" -- were
widely distributed in the Soviet Union. For his fiction, he received
Stalin's international peace prize.

In 1950, the House Committee on Un-American Activities ordered him to a
three-month jail sentence for contempt of Congress when he refused to
produce records of the Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee, of which he
was a member.

In 1952, he was an American Labor Party candidate from New York to the
House of Representatives. He also wrote a column for the Daily Worker, the
Communist Party newspaper.

Blacklisted by many publishing houses, he formed his own company, Blue
Heron Press, to publish "Spartacus." The book grew out of his own
experiences behind bars.

After breaking with the Communists, he wrote "The Naked God" (1957), a
novel about an idealistic youth who turns to Communism to address the
world's ills and finds its leaders lacking in judgment. "No former
Communist had ever written more bitterly of his personal experience,"
reviewer David Sanders, an English teacher at the U

This book is one of the lasting monuments of the library underground,
though the contributors surely never imagined this kind of respectful

bleary-eyed realism is still a testament of solidarity with the
enthusiastic, disgruntled or just plain bolshy librarian, the sort of
thing that the Association of Assistant Librarians did so well before
putting on a tie and becoming the Career Development Group.
The introduction by one of the editors gives the best insight into its

KAGAA as Altruistic punishment.

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat
Evolutionary psychology

Pro bono publico

Mar 13th 2003
From The Economist print edition
The evolution of punishment explained

HUMANS, unlike most other animals, often co-operate with individuals to
whom they are unrelated. That puzzles evolutionary biologists. It means
they have to explain the spread of genes which cause an individual to
engage in altruistic activities that are costly to perform, and yet benefit
only others. The usual assumption is that favours will be repaid. The
question is how, given the number of cheats and freeloaders around, that
repayment can be relied on. And one of the answers is to punish the cheats.

However, imposing punishment, too, is costly—often, it seems, more costly
than an individual's own interests could justify. So the problem is merely
pushed back a step. There still needs to be an explanation for the
evolution of this so-called altruistic punishment.
The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences publishes an abstract
of the paper by Robert Boyd and his colleagues.
Robert Boyd, an anthropologist at the University of California, Los
Angeles, and his colleagues, think they have found it. In a paper just
published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they
discuss a series of computer simulations that show how, once they appear,
genes for altruistic punishment tend to spread.

Dr Boyd modelled 128 groups of individuals who, together, constituted a
“virtual” society. He then let his model society evolve. There were two
distinct evolutionary pressures at work. Individuals competed with one
another in a classic Darwinian manner. But entire groups competed as well.
In Dr Boyd's model (as in the real world), these two pressures tended to
work in opposite directions.

Each group comprised individuals who adopted one of three behavioural
strategies. “Co-operators” helped the group to improve its fitness at the
expense of their individual rewards. “Defectors” willingly accepted the
help of others, but did not reciprocate. “Punishers” behaved like
co-operators, but also punished defectors at a cost to themselves.

At first, the researchers ran their model without including punishers in
it. In this case, when the groups were small (four individuals per group),
co-operators came to dominate. Freeloading off other group members is not a
great strategy when the others are few in number. Co-operation, by
contrast, helps everybody in the competition with other groups. When the
groups were larger, though (up to several hundred individuals), defecting
came to dominate. In this case the benefits conferred on an individual by
defecting outweighed the cost to the group. Which is where punishment came in.

Dr Boyd showed that when punishers were introduced to the mix, even if they
started in only one group, their strategy spread rapidly through the
population. The benefits to a group of having punishers to keep defectors
in check outweigh the cost to individual punishers. This is particularly
true when defection is rare, as the cost to punishers is then lower. And
because defection does not pay when punishers are common, it tends to be
rare—a virtuous circle.

So much for the theory. But it also seems to illuminate reality. Modern
hunter-gatherer societies, which are assumed to be similar to those of
early man, have a maximum size of 150-180 people. Without punishment, the
computer simulations suggest that co-operation would have died out in
groups of this size.

There is a long way to go, of course, before computational anthropologists
can accurately simulate human societies. Dr Boyd hopes to move a bit in
that direction by making the models of both individual behaviour and group
structure more complex. For example, the existing model has no geography.
All the different groups are thus equally likely to encounter each other.
However, the model can already say something interesting about what might
have happened hundreds of thousands of years ago. And that is no small feat.

Anti-Bush T-Shirt
WHIO-TV, NEWSCENTER
7
Secret Service Agents question a Bellbrook High School student for
wearing a controversial t-shirt.
The shirt has a picture of President Bush on it and the words, "not
my president." The picture also showed cross-hairs on the Bush's
forehead.
Because this issue is so sensitive, even we don't know the students name.

But we can tell you this whole thing was brought to the attention of
school administrators after two students came forward and complained.

According to the Assistant Principal, the student had worn it before and
the shirt didn't cause any problems until cross hairs appeared on the
President's forehead.
The Assistant Principal confiscated the shirt, called the FBI and agents
then called the secret service.
From that point, the Secret Service took over the investigation and met
with the student and essentially treated the situation as a potential
threat on the president.
There are more than 800 students at Bellbrook High School and the
Assistant Principal says they're all good kids, but he's especially proud
of two of them.
The Assistant Principal states that he is proud of the two students who
brought the issue to the attention of the school administration.

TIMISOARA-ROMANIA Report.

2003-03-15 Thread professor rat

please spread this arround!
ACTIONS AGAINST WAR END UP BAD IN TIMISOARA-ROMANIA. ABC STARTS.
As I said, there was planned a march for peace in the city, on the 15th
of march and the student organisation fooled us and got no autorisation.
so, here we are in front a hard decission. should we go on ilegal demo or
not. and the answer was, hell yes! so we prepare for the action. in the
previous night at the punk concert there were 4 secret agents, and that
was a sign from them that they will not stop there.
the authorised march was supposed to start at 13:00 in front of the
university and go through the town. so, we decide we will still keep that
as a convergence point, and after go to center and have a smaller march,
without blocking cars and just leafleting and having banners and flags.

morning hours were a pain, cause people from the student organisation
called by chiefs of the police got so scared that they would keep us all
time on the phone.
we said we still go there, but because the cooking part was going hard,
we decided that we should go and say to the people who will come to the
university that the demo will be delayed untill after the food not bombs
action.
going in front of the university we found one big surprise. the place was
full with police. we spread arround so that we can let people know that
meeting point has changed. we managed to announce some of the people, but
not all. we also met one of the people from the student ngo who fucked
us. he was all pale and he said that he had converstions on the phone
with police chifs for more than one hour. he was begging us not to
protest, not to put out banners, not to do anything. hehe! he said 3 big
chiefs of the ppolice where there and there is a big mobilisation from
the police.
anyway, so we announce as many people as we can, it seemed that more
people preferd to come at the f.n.b. actions than at the march.
anyway, we got back to the cocking place so, that we discuss new
strategies for the action. people from CAF (craiova anarho front) and the
REVOLUTIONSHOP group, from craiova were here offering theyr help for the
action and preparation. theyr support was heartening for all of us here.
there we discussed and realised that there is no way we could do the
march at all and we should focuse on the food not bombs, which together
with our week of leafleting would make some sense and worth the material
and financial help.
there were in the square where we did the food not bombs action some 50
people who camed there for the action and also about 20 street
kids/people which we have gathered from the streets. we put the banners
up the sorounding walls and a friend was playing the guitar. everything
was ok, untill the first sign appeared...
the chief of a gendarmerie (i don't know the exact spelling) team camed
to us. he asked that he wanted to talk to the leader of the group. we
said we have no leader. he said that somebody would better asume this
role. so our hippy-guitar friend went and gave his id and said what's
about. the discussions went great. the "jandarm" said he is
glad that we have initiative and even if we don't have any autorisation
he will send to boys of his team to protect us from the eventual fury of
some potential people who would hate our stance. he said that we will
start to shout or do other "stupid" things disturbing the order
and neighbors he and his team will act imediately.
we were so amzed about what we heard and we went on with the sharing of
food and feeling good. all things went good untill the food was almost
gone, and a police (not gendarmerie!!!) car camed. this time there were 6
policemen who jumped out and asked the same question. who is your leader?
so the story went almost the same. the hippy friend said what he told to
the other guy, other people also went there and explained that the action
is close to the end and we will soon go. the poliman said that they want
to protect us from eventual aggressions from the other people who might
pick on us because of the way we look or whatever. and that he respects
what we're doing but w need to finish soon because they have a lot of
missions and they are doing voluntary work there and are freezing (?!?).

so we say that we finish soon and go home with a fifth food not bombs
action with no problems. in very few minutes another police car camed and
and a very big chief camed out. he gave some orders and a policemen asked
for our id's, of everybody. the people who had none could go home. and
they were not happy that so many of us gave the id's to them (maybe
because of too much paper work for them!!!). anyway, some people got
theyr id's back and others not.
what happened next? 19 people got fines of 1.500.000 and one got
1.700.000, meaning about 45 euro per person. that comes in a situation
where almost everybody was unemployed, student or whatever thing with no
job. and that's in a country where the average salary is 100$.
the action was clearly a political one, and i

In the credit where credit's due department, this change in press relations
is one of the better things to come out of the G. W. Bush administration.
Compared with the way the press was handled during Gulf War I, this
approach is much more likely to bring incidents such as Mai Lai to the
light of day. (It also should produce a much better version of, "War, the

NEXT OF KIN NEEDED URGENTLY!

2003-03-15 Thread cpunks_anon
ATTN:

FROM: DR. Baldwin Onuigbo

Diamond Bank of Nigeria Plc.

Idumota branch, lagos,

Nigeria.

First I must solicit your confidence in this

transaction, this is by virtue of it being very

confidential.

I am Dr. Baldwin Onuigbo, the head of Private banking

department in the Diamond Bank of Nigeria Plc., Idumota

Branch,Lagos. I came to know you in my private search

for a reliable and reputable person to handle this

confidential transaction, which involves the transfer

of a huge sum of money to a foreign bank account

requiring maximum confidence.

THE PROPOSITION:

He was an Oil Merchant/Contractor with the Federal

Government of Nigeria, until his untimely death three

years ago in a ghastly motor accident, banked with us

here at Diamond Bank of Nigeria Plc., Lagos, and has

a closing balance of US$25 (Twenty Five million, united states dollars only) which the

bank now unquestionably expects to be claimed by his

next of kin or alternatively be donated to a

discredited trust fund for arms and ammunition at a

military war college here in Nigeria. Fervent efforts

being made by the Diamond Bank of Nigeria Plc. to get

in touch with any of the deceased family has proved

abortive. It is because of the perceived possibility

of not being able to locate the next of kin (He had no

wife or children) that the management under the

influence of our chairman and member of the board of

directors, retired Major Gen. Bensons maka, that an

arrangement be made for the funds to be declared

Unclaimed and subsequently be donated to the trust

fund for arms and ammunitions to further enhance the

cause of war in Africa and the world at large.

In order to avert this negative development, some of

my trusted colleagues and I now seek your permission

to have you stand as next of kin to the deceased so

that the funds US$20.5 would be released and paid in

to your bank account as the next of kin. All documents

and proof to enable yo
arded to you and more so; we are

assuring you of 100% risk-free involvement. We have

agreed to part with 15% percentage of the total amount

as your own share of the money for assisting us in

this deal. You should not entertain any fear as all

modalities for fund transfer can be finalized within

five banking days, after you apply to the bank as the

next of kin.

If this proposal is OK by you and assure us that you

will not take undue advantage of the trust we hope to

bestow on you, please kindly get back to me by email

for further details and step to progress. kindly

contact me immediately via my e-mail furnishing me

with your most confidential telephone, fax and e-mail,

so I can forward to you the relevant details of this

transaction.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

To your health,

Dr. Baldwin Onuigbo.

Assistance Needed

2003-03-15 Thread barristerd2
 Dear sir,

Please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It´s my pleasure to send you this proposal with the hope that you will treat it as
highly confidential. A very satisfactory
information I received about your esteemed profile gave me the courage to reveal this
top secret to you.

I am Barrister Richard Davis, a lawyer by profession and a family attorney to an
erstwhile Military Governor of one of the states in
Nigeria. My client is among seven others presently facing trial, charged with corrupt
enrichment while in office under the new
Anti-corruption Bill recently passed to law by the National Assembly.

My client told me in strict confidence that he deposited the sum of $45 million U.S.
dollars fourty five million U.S.dollars) with a
security company here in Nigeria, and that the money is kept in two boxes each
containing $22.5 million U.S. dollars. (Twenty
Two Million Five Hundred Thousand U.S.Dollars) He also told me that he is holding the
money on trust for one of the Ministers
of late President Laurent Kabila of Zaire who was assassinated by one of his personal
aids.

Due to the uprising following the assassination of President Laurent Kabila of Zaire,
the Minister in question is presently under
hiding in Nigeria for fear of probes by the new administration.

Consequent upon this new anti-corruption bill, my client is worried sick on how to
remove these funds from the security
company before it is discovered and seized. After due consultation with the security
company, we were advised to liaise with a
foreigner who will represent us as the sole beneficiary in Europe where the security
company has their regional headquarters, It
is on this reason that I am contacting you for assistance and to invest part of it in
properties, and the rest in triple AAA bank
security.

My client and the Minister have agreed that the money should be moved abroad for this
purpose, and my client has entrusted
me with the task of getting a trustworthy person overseas who could as
securtity company
overseas where it will be transferred to, I am sending you this proposal seeking your
immediate assistance.

Arrangement has been concluded on how this money will be moved to a security company
abroad to enable you claim it with
relative ease for investment.

Following charges leveled against my client under this new anti-corruption bill, the
Federal Government of Nigeria has
embarked on the seizure of his assets and frozen of his bank accounts both in Nigeria
and abroad, but has not discovered this
money yet because of the coded formation under which it was deposited, hence there is
urgent need for this money to be
moved abroad before it is stumbled on and seized.

My client is offering you 20% of the entire money for your ssistance, and another 5% of
net operating profit after tax on the
investment if you are to manage the investment on his behalf.

If you find this offer acceptable, please get back to me as soon as possible for
further information on the modalities for the
successful completion of this transaction. Include your confidential telephone and fax
number while replying for easy
communication.

Best regards,

Barrister Richard Davies
