I don’t think you are going to find a source that recommends the time game
to change the hose. Your boat is 40+ years old and I assume it is original.

The manufacturer of the dripless shaft seal I had installed on my prior
boat recommended changing the hose after 10 years. It is different material
from standard hose used with a stuffing box.

If you are asking the question, it is time to change it.

Stus-List Re: Hose

2025-03-20 Thread John Read via CnC-List
When to replace depends a lot on the environment to which it is used. There is
no set time or hours or years or whatever. Salt or fresh water? Any vibration
in the system due to engine alignment or cutlass bearing? What type of
packing? In water and used year round or just seasonally? How much motoring?
Cruising or racing? Just to mention a few variables.

When I purchased my 34 in 1999 I had the yard mechanic go through everything
and replace hoses, packing, impellors, thermostat just for good measure. His
inspection revealed the PO had replaced the hose with the wrong type and a few
other items. Needless to say we replaced the hose. It is still there and
doing fine 26 years later. I mostly race so overall no excessive amount of
motoring, old fashioned packing gland and replaced packing 2 or 3 times over
the 26 years, have replaced motor mounts, worn cutlass bearing and rebuilt prop
so no vibration, haul every winter for 6 months.

Your experience may vary.

I'd definitely replace it before it starts to come apart. That said...

I replaced mine a few years ago 1979 C&C 30. Guessing it was original. There
were cracks in the outer coating,
and I was starting to lose sleep over it. So, that's likely pushing it to the
extreme. The hoses don't get a lot
of wear, aren't exposed to UV degradation, but have sea water and vibration to
deal with.

You will have to pull the transmission prop coupler to get the new one on...If
it was like mine last done
when it left the factory floor, you may need a new coupler as convincing it to
release from the shaft may
damage it.
