Stus-List Refinishing cabin floor

2020-07-07 Thread ahycrace via CnC-List
Sorry for bringing this up again I know it was discussed before but I can't
find the old discussions. I have just about finished stripping the floor in
Liberty using that non toxic orange stuff from home depot it worked pretty
good. I want to coat it with something not to slippery that looks good, glossy
or satin finish as long as its protective and looks good what should I use?Gary

Re: Stus-List VHF Radio with Outside Extension Mic

2020-07-07 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
I will second Bill’s comment about ram mic vs handheld in cockpit. Aside from
wattage and battery charge life there can be other considerations as well.

In September 2014 we were racing in the Prince of Wales race is Halifax aboard
the C&C115 Koobalibra. Dave’s Ram mic had died so I brought my almost new
handheld aboard from Persistence.

It was windy and the mainsheet setup on the C&C115 can lead to entaglement with
the Binnacle if not careful during gybes. One gybe in 20 knot TWS resulted in
this and when we freed it the handheld VHF exploded all over the cockpit. We
recovered the VHS before it went out the transom but the battery was gone and
all the knobs and antenna were cleaned right off the top by the main sheet.

No one was hurt, Koobalibra suffered no damage and we finished the race with no
further incidents. Thankfully Perrsistence had won a Std Horizon HH VHF in a
race 2 years earlier so was not without one.

I could never go back to not having A RAM mic in the cockpit, a handheld is a
PIA.
Having said that, that is exactly the situation I find myself in now, and
just the thought of running the cable up to the cabin has me procrastinating.
Like Alan sez, there is a very good chance the existing cable will work with
newer mic, or the current cable they sell may work with your older one. There
are several on Ebay.
Also, if you get another, S-H just came out with a new radio, GX2400, which I
just missed getting by a day.

Thanks Stu and Chuck.

Chuck speaks the truth about the Morse cables. If they are getting tight, you
do need to replace them. Nothing else works and in all probability, you will be
surprised at the improvement. I had owned my 1978 27 for more than 15 years
when I finally replaced the shifter cable and what a difference! It had always
been stiff and I thought that it was the transmission. It was not. Just do it.

Re: Stus-List Refinishing cabin floor

2020-07-07 Thread Bailey White via CnC-List
I tried something different on the floors. After lightly sanding, I used 2
coats of Topcoat epoxy on the floors and then a floor polyurethane gloss
above that for hardness and UV protection. I get lots of compliments as
the floors looks glossy and wet. A coat of Topcoat is something like 60
coats of varnish, at least per Topcoat's advertisement on the packaging.

I've had the floors in place for a year now and no issues.

Topcoat is inexpensive for epoxy at $60 for a gallon at Home Depot and is
made for table tops and the like. It made for a beautiful and thick clear
coat over the original flooring. I need to do one thin coat over the
bottom of the boards now too.

My only lesson learned is to seal the floors before applying Topcoat.
Otherwise, you risk small bubbles. Those drove me nuts and I ended up
sanding and re-applying to try to avoid. I learned later that sealing the
wood first would have made the most difference. I tried a torch to remove
bubbles and had only limited success.

Stus-List Marina/Dock/Pier potable water warning

2020-07-07 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Meant to post this last week.

I was working on a friend's boat and needed some weights to hold something
in place until an adhesive cured. I'd brought several clear plastic juice
bottles for the purpose.

I went to fill the first one from a potable water faucet on the pier.
OMG! I couldn't believe nor could I describe the "stuff" that came out of
the faucet into the plastic bottles. It was disgusting! This faucet must
have been idle for quite some time. Further, it was on a long down leg
from the main line which ran above under the roofed pier. Sediment must
have been accumulating in the down leg for years.

So, my caution is to always liberally purge potable water supply faucets on
piers. You don't know how long that particular faucet, supply leg, etc.
has been idle. You don't know if some strange insect has taken up
residence in the faucet.

Purge. Purge. Purge.
