Stus-List Boat yards and covid19

2020-04-01 Thread John and Maryann Read via CnC-List
Just received notice our yard (Fort Rachel) remains closed to the public and
boat owners for another month until April 30. Boat owners are prohibited
from working on their boats during this period so will really start to
impact launch schedules. We normally remove cover and start spring buff &
wax and bottom mid April for launch late May. Now extended to mid May and
launch mid June (we hope)

Yacht club building remains closed. Grounds and dock are restricted. Near
term events cancelled. Later events under evaluation.

Tough times - stay home and stay safe

Joe, I'm pretty sure if you check, your "full coverage" has limitations as
to where you are covered and under what type of operating conditions.
For example, when we purchased Sea Hawk we had "full coverage" but were not
covered for any type of racing. The recreational boating we were covered
for was only on the inland waters of the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay and
associated tributaries (the policy called out the lines of demarcation),
and we had a winter lay-up period of December 1st to April 1st. Since then
we've moved to commercial insurance for operating the boat as a 6-Pack, we
also shifted the layup period to between January 1st and April 1st. The
original price was ~$800/yr, now we're ~$1300/yr.

During the delivery from NYC we needed a letter from the underwriter
stating that for the purpose of delivery we could travel between certain
dates and along a limited path in order to get the boat home.

As for blue water and international travel I've heard that the biggest
thing to do is to get the boat paid off so that keeping insurance is not
required for the bank. There are companies who will provide coverage
unlimited coverage but the more cost effective way to get by is to plan
your trip with the insurance company and pay for the limited amount of
coverage needed for the duration and location of your travel. For example,
it might be $3000 to get across the Atlantic Ocean and then $1000/yr for
the duration of your stay in the Med, then $3000 to get back across.

2020-04-01 Thread Joe Della Barba via CnC-List
All policies have some restrictions. I never had winter layup, usually
the boat gets used 12 months a year more or less. My old navigation
limit without a rider was the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. Now I have
by default the East Coast and Gulf Coast and out 75 miles. I could pay a
bit extra and get 100 miles out for Coquina, they won't cover a 13 foot
Boston Whaler past 75 miles out for some reason LOL. I think I can add
Mexico and Canada pretty cheaply, but from the sounds of the policy they
probably assume I would trailer the Whaler there and launch it to go
fishing, not sure about sailing to Mexico from here.

Coquina was paid off long before this list existed, so I can just take
off and not worry about insurance if I have to.

Touche's insurance is cheaper in Pensacola, FL than Mandeville, LA. Most
probably because of Louisiana's legal system. ALL insurance is more

FWIW, my premium is based on agreed value. At $40K agreed value, the premium
is $716 w Progressive within 75 nautical miles. They didn't require any
survey, so I save on that. I believe BoatUS requires a survery before insuring
and every five years. I also get a discount for no claims for over ten years,
and safe boating course. To me she's worth $70K but I'll be lucky to sell for
$25K, with today's market. And that was before considering Covid-19. I
probably could save some money on the premium by dropping the value, but I'm
not sure I want to do that.

Stus-List Florida COVID checkpoint

2020-04-01 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Yesterday on the way to Touche' I had the pleasure of going through the
Florida COVID checkpoint on I-10. Fun to the max I can tell you.

On approach, signs and orange pylons directed traffic into the right lane
then off the Interstate into the weigh station. Semis were culled first
and allowed to proceed. Louisiana vehicles (me) were culled to the right
and into the back of the weigh station. All others were allowed to proceed
with no delay.

I had to stop at a station where a lady in a mask and gloves wrote my truck
license number on a form which she gave to me and directed me to a parking
area to complete it. It asked for identification, contact info, where I
was staying in Florida and purpose of visit. I had to sign the form
ackonowledging that if I didn't adhere to Florida's COVID policies I could
be fined $500. I handed the form in at another station and proceeded on.
Whoopee.

There must have been 30 Florida Highway Patrol cars in the weigh station,
all with their lights flashing. All the troopers were standing around. A
few had assigned traffic flow jobs to do but it seemed like overkill to
me. I guess they wanted to be prepared in case a car load of infected
Coonasses from the Louisiana bayous tried to mount an invasion.

Bit of hypocrisy from a state which up until a week or so ago was still
allowing folks to raft up on boats and party.

My marina and boatyard is still operting but has some staff working from
home. It's pretty quiet here. They hauled/launched a few boats. I can
hear sanding and working in the yard.

Man it a serious threat. Don’t think this is fake news. There is a big
problem with spread down there according to cnn. Here we are advised to
isolate. Stay home that is unless we have to go out in society for
essential business. Sailing is not essential. Many of us expect to miss the
2020 sailing season altogether. Lots of marinas are restricting normal
things. It will be iffy to get launched. You got it good, you’re in the

Re: Stus-List Florida COVID checkpoint

2020-04-01 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
There is a perspective that I have yet to see anyone express: even if this
CV-19 mostly kills elderly folks with existing pre-conditions, it is still hard
on the younger set when they get it. That still includes doctors, nurses,
dentists and ambulance drivers. If they’re sick, who will handle the non-covid
afflictions (i.e. heart attacks, strokes, the car wreck victims and the kids
with broken bones)? Broken dentures anyone?

One of my daughters had something really bad in the early part of March. She
said that her lungs spasmed and felt like they were on fire. She’s 34. How old
is your doctor or dentist? She tested negative for flu and strep so the
hospital sent her home. The CV-19 tests were in short supply and she was still
ambulatory. She had to teach her four year-old how to make formula for her
eight month-old. She’s feels 100% recovered NOW but it was a scary week for us
all.

We just can’t break our healthcare system (it’s half-broken already). Besides,
the cost of treatment could bankrupt you. Aren’t we supposed to leave our money
to our kids instead?

Re: Stus-List Florida COVID checkpoint

2020-04-01 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Don't think I'm not taking this thing seriously! I think the Admiral and I
have used gallons of hand sanitizer and yards of disinfectant wipes. I
carry hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and diposable gloves in my truck
and I use them.

Everything that comes into our house, packages, mail, groceries, etc. gets
quarantined and sanitized. If something has inner packaging, we sanitize
the outer packaging or handle it with gloves, remove the inner packaging
then toss the outer packaging. We wash all produce with soap and water as
soon as it gets in the house. We have lots of meals made and frozen in our
outside freezer.

When I drive to Pensacola, I'm a couple gallons short of making the round
trip. This time I carried 5 extra gallons in the truck so I wouldn't have
to stop for fuel. If I have to refuel, I use disposable gloves and toss
them at the fuel stop.

I stopped at the Alabama welcome station because it is new and ADA
compliant. I knew it has button activated doors where I could bump it with
my hip and open the doors. As it turned out, some genius at the facility
had propped the doors open so I could walk in without touching anything
even though I had a disinfectant wipe with me.

The Mississippi rest stops are old and don't have automatic doors.

I can lock/unlock my truck from the boat so I don't expose my keys. They
stay on the boat. I open the security gate to my pier with a disinfectant
wipe and sanitize my hands at the truck and at the boat each pass through
the gate.

These are examples of how we all need to think in this "new normal"
environment. There is a lot of good information out there on keeping
yourself safe and minimizing your exposure.

I'm not sailing the boat, just doing some work and trying to shake a
serious case of cabin fever.

Anyone who states that sailing is not an an essential part of life must not
have psychological needs.

Sailing and or boat maintenance in a marina are one of the few activities
compliant with social distancing that I can think of today. I am a New
Orleanian who has been in Houston since 2/10/20 while my wife undergoes
treatment. Public parks here and at home are open to people who practice social
distances. Explain to me how being on the water with your immediate family is a

Does a crabbing license cost more than a whining license?

Stus-List Dual fuel filter valve setups

2020-04-01 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
Hello all,

I have an additional primary filter left over from removing a generator that
was mounted in the stern of our 1994 C&C 37/40+.
I was thinking about re-mounting it and using it as a backup filter in the
event the usual filter becomes clogged.  I could also use it for polishing with
a small pump.

Have any of you done this, and do you have some photos and a schematic as to
how the valves and flow would function?

Thanks!

You could check out buying only the valve from the Racor 75500MaxM. Six
ports and one handle. Might be pricey but simpler installation if you have
a couple of filters already.

Bruce, Rebecca Leah has 2 racor 500 filters, I can use them in parallel, or
singly. I have an electric fuel pump that will supply the engine, should the
boost pump fail. I am also able to transfer fuel between my 3 tanks, and filter
it at the same time. DougDoug Mountjoysv Rebecca Leah C&C Landfall 39Port

Re: Stus-List Florida COVID checkpoint

2020-04-01 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
Dennis thanks for reminding me of the term “coonass” :D

Chatfield Marina opened for the season today. Seven boats in slips already. I
worked on Grenadine in the yard; launching Sunday. Several other owners were
out there working on their boats too, and we talked from a distance. No
problem. I helped one of my club members hoist his outboard onto its mount.
We both wore masks and wiped our hands with chlorox wipes after.

But I just found out my slip neighbors have COVID-19. Their boat’s not in yet
(as a result) and I haven’t seen them since last fall, so they’re not exposing
people at the marina. However there was a memorial service a couple weeks ago
for a dock neighbor who passed, and they attended and may have infected other
people on our dock. Shit just got real.

Cheers,
Randy Stafford
