Re: Stus-List Bimini top with solar panels?

2019-09-22 Thread Olivier Chatot via CnC-List

This is what I have. It's a lightweight construction made of wood. It's
large, so great for the tropics. There are two small semitransparent
"skylights" so I can peek at the sails while underway. The solar panels are
screwed onto the roof at the back. The section in the middle is strong
enough to hold an adult, so I can climb up there to unzip the lazy bag. It
works as a raincatcher too. I have to unscrew it to remove it, but I've
never actually done it myself.

Cheers,

I'm using AGM's only because of the location. House batteries are under
the saloon floor, and sit at an angle.

AGM can and will still off gas and overheat so for the most part they carry
similar safety concerns as flooded batteries. Their biggest safety
advantage is that they are "non-spillable" but really, if they spilled
would it be such that anyone, most of all kids, would be exposed?

I also use flooded. I only use Delco Voyager batteries. They seem to be a
favorite of professional bass fishermen.

I get 7-8 years service life for about $110 a battery.

Nice, they do seem the cost effective way to go.
In your experience do weak batteries make diesels hard to start. Two weekends
after sitting all week the starter turns but there is no ignition but there is
smoke.  Finally on the 4th time it starts and has no issues the rest of the day
and no smoke??

Peter,

Your problem is very likely a very small leak in your fuel system. Your starter
turns until the system is primed and it will stay fine for few hours, but then
air gets in again.

I experienced this problem before, my leak was at the secondary fuel filter.

Re: Stus-List Flooded Batteries

2019-09-22 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
Keep in mind that the AGMs require somewhat different charging characteristics.
Gels are more of a “drop-in” solution.

Since “marine how-tos” were quoted here not so long ago, I would suggest
visiting that site and doing a bit of reading there. He has plenty of info,
both plus and minus about the AGMs.

Both (AGM and gel) are much more sensitive to abuse. Flooded can’t be that
easily murdered and are cheaper.

Any gel can work in any position, even upside down. A major plus on a sailboat
(hopefully, not the upside down part). And even if they off-gas, this is
substantially less than the standard flooded cells.

I use gels. Mainly, because they are under the berth in the main cabin. They
are into their 9th year.

Re: Stus-List Flooded Batteries

If the engine turns over at anything close to a "normal" speed then the
battery is strong enough and not the problem. You can prime the engine by
operating the flipper on the lift pump or by holding the decompression
levers while running the starter.

The decompression levers are also a way to pre-lube the engine after a long
absence, get the engine to start on weak batteries, and also to shut the
engine down in an emergency.
