C&C’ers:

First and foremost, we are looking forward to seeing you at our
2018 C&C Northeast Rendezvous in Milford, CT! This email covers some of the
details of the event – please do read it carefully and let me know if any
changes need to be made in regards to your boat’s details.

The extended weather forecast looks phenomenal, showing mostly
sunny to partly cloudy skies, with highs in the upper 70’s and lows in the mid
60’s.

We have a series of docks reserved at Milford Lisman Landing
Marina – located at the very end of Milford Harbor. The channel is plenty deep,
but mind your charts.

(chart image removed due to List message size limits)

These are floating docks with 30A power, and the marina
features restrooms and showers. On approach, contact the marina at VHF Channel
9 with your boat’s name. Your reservation has been made and dockage fees are
all pre-paid. Reservation details:

The marina is a short walk to Broad Street (shops, restaurants)
and Wilcox Park. For those of you with a sweet tooth, Milford’s Scoopy Doo’s
Ice Cream Shop is next door.

As for the swag – aside from name tags and neck wallets, each
boat will receive a beach bag, a collapsible nylon backpack and a pen with
stylus tip compliments of my organization, The Network of Trial Law Firms.

Dinner for the first night will be at the marina’s picnic area
overlooking the harbor. It’s a completely unorganized pot luck, so bring
whatever dish you like as well as paper plates and plasticware. Before retiring
for the evening, we’ll climb aboard a cockpit or two for cocktails and cigars
(bring your own), as I like to call it “C&C’s on C&C’s.”

On Saturday, we can have informal boat tours of each other’s
boats as well as enjoy the day in Milford. Walk around, play in the park or
relax on your C&C.

On Saturday night, 6:00p, attendees from Enterprise (2),
Weatherly (3), Hideaway (4), and Knot Again (2) have a patio reservation at
Archie Moore’s Pub and Restaurant. Included in the above-mentioned boats’
reservation is a complete appetizer package of buffalo wings, chicken fingers,
cheese quesadillas and eggplant fries, along with soda/coffee. If you’d like
something more or different, beer or alcohol, or something more healthy (God
forbid), there is a full menu to order from (pay restaurant separately).

Afterwards, we can do more “C&C’s on C&C’s” before turning in
and our voyages back home the next morning.

Stus-List Old B&G Focus instrument heads

2018-08-30 Thread Chuck Saur via CnC-List
Happy Labor Day week! New boat (for me) and working to upgrade nav
station, so I have three B&G Focus instruments...AWI/speed...Depth...and an
apparent "master controller dial" (did not find much information on my
brief Google search). They were mounted inside the nav station and are in
perfect shape.

Would rather they get used...make an offer that at least covers shipping?

Re: Stus-List Solar and batteries

2018-08-30 Thread Dreuge via CnC-List

I was surprised at how well these $15-$20 meters work. I first installed one
with a shunt about 2 yrs ago as a test to measure the power output for my
house bank. I installed a second meter for measuring the charging input using
the same shunt. Using the same shunt wired in reverse make installing the
second meter trivial. There are no real cost savings regarding 2, 1, or 0
shunts as a meter with the shunt only cost about $2 more. Two nice features
for using a shunt: safely handles larger current loads, and if a meter ever
fails, normal battery operation continues. These meters display energy
properly as Watt*hrs rather than the convenient (but improper) Amp*hrs, so you
have divide by the voltage to get the Ah.

I include the link to the meter I purchased below because the Amazon
description shows several a nice installation schematics including separate
solar, inverter, and input/output bank. I basically have meters #2 & #3 wired
as shown on the solar wiring instructions (image 4) except that my engine
ground (i.e. starter) is connected directly to the battery negative and not
after the shunt.

2018-08-30 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
I have some FleaBay special meters. I get a hit rate of about 75% good and 25%
trash, but they are cheap enough that I don't mind.
Do keep in mind some of them will NOT work with a shunt on the positive side
without an isolated power supply and some won't work with the shunt on positive
or negative if the meter power is supplied from the same system. I got power
supply isolators for about $6 for this reason. Biggest PITA was mounting the
meters.

All lead acid batteries exhibit what I believe is called a surface charge
immediately after charge. When doing any battery condition testing it is
important to "burn off" the surface charge OR allow the batteries to rest
for about 24 hours. At max charge rate (bulk charge stage) you will see
voltage clime until it reaches as high as 14.6 or 14.7, particularly when
on the engine or shore power charger (maybe not on a 50w solar panel.)
Once the bulk is complete (80% charged) the voltage will hold at 14.7ish
through the absorption stage and the max current will taper off until about
2amps. Once 2 amps is reached the charger changes to float stage which is
usually ~13.3v. Assuming your charging system is large enough to fully
make up for the usage, 13.3v is where you should normally find your
batteries while on charge. After sundown 13.3v will decay to 12.7v.

I have one of these on my solar charge system. It makes seeing and
understanding what is going on much easier. This particular model is nice
since no external shunt is required. You could even get two and then
monitor the loads and the charges.

Dennis,

Personally, I don’t think any of the museums (maritime or other) are worth it
on Long Island, but there are some cool places to go and visit.

1. Port Jefferson (great shops and restaurants — all on the waterfront)
2. Greenport — It’s a little bit of a drive from mid-island, but the area is
beautiful. Great town to walk through, wonderful seafood restaurants, and a
ferry to Shelter Island)

Though I haven’t been there in some time, Northport is nice, as is Oyster Bay.
On the South Shore is Jones Beach, the Hamptons and Montauk.

If it’s a rainy day, set the Admiral loose in Roosevelt Field — a high-end
shopping mall, complete with a Neeman Marcus (a/k/a "Needless Markup")

All the best,

Edd

Last year at the N.E. Rendezvous in Greenport, other guests suggested that
we explore/drive through shelter island and then hit Sag Harbor. It
appeared to be a cool town though we didn't get to explore too long. We
happened to be there for their Whaling days festival which was very
enjoyable. You might want to look them up and see what's going on.

Bayles Boat shop in Port Jeff is a community boat building shop well worth a
visit. http://www.lisec.org/. Port Jeff itself is worth a visit for a boater.
The Long Island Marine Museum in West Sayville is also worth a visit.
https://www.limaritime.org/. And if you make it as far as Sag Harbor there is
Whaling Museum and the town itself is an old Seaport with many yachts. They
have an active race fleet on Wednesday eves. I am out in Montauk at the very
end of the South Fork and the eastern most point in NY. Probably too far for
you to venture but worth a visit. Jerry

Dennis,
If you enjoy wine and wish to rent a car, the wineries on the North Fork of Long Island
are worth visiting. If you are an oenophile, email me at emp...@optonline.net and I can
share our favorites with you. Shelter Island is nice, but not much to see unless you like
nature trails and a really quaint setting. Sag Harbor can be impressive as it is the
playground for the rich and famous. When we sailed in, the boat behind us radioed
"what are all those hotels doing near the water". They were not hotels, just
150 -250 yachts! If you want to take the ferry to New London from Port Jeff, the Mystic
Seaport is worth the trip. Enjoy the trip.

Hey,

Where will you be on Long Island? It's kind of a big place with lots of
traffic. There are some cool spots all over. Someone might even volunteer to
take you sailing on a C&C.

Good luck,
Barry

I will be accompanying the Admiral as she makes a business trip to central
Long Island in a couple weeks. I'll have a free day or two. I see some
maritime museums listed in the area. Any of them worthwhile? Any other
things that are recommended?

I am a member of Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic Conn and know you could spend
a full day there. They have the whaler Charles W Morton, the sail training
ship Joseph Conrad, The Grand Banks schooner LA Duntan and many other fine
yachts.

Does anyone have the above unit sitting in their junk box? I'm looking for the

Stus-List Long Island

Don’t forget City Island. Interesting maritime place (at least it was when I
was growing up on western Long Island Sound in the 50s). Just outside of NYC.
