Re: Stus-List New lines and hayalards

2018-05-15 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
StaSet X has a different construction than a basic polyester double braid like
XLE or StaSet. The core of StaSetX is not braided but instead has parallel
orientation of core fibers inside a polyester sleeve. This construction allows
for a higher tensile strength and less elongation under tension at the expense
of better flexibility and twisting characteristics. New StaSetX has a
tendency to want to remain coiled or twisted when it comes off a winch which is
one reason that it rarely is used for sheets and control lines requiring
regular adjustments. That said, it is the strongest construction for a
polyester rope on a boat and if you are comfortable splicing it, it works well
as a halyard.
https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/document.do?docId=930
Another difference is that StaSet X adds spun polyester fibers in the cover
construction, which ostensibly makes the rope softer to the touch and a bit
grippier in clutches. My experience is that the cover tends to get fuzzy and
picks up dirt and debris more readily as well as lacking abrasion resistance
compared to filament cover yarns.
As with most products, there are pluses and minuses. Weighing cost vs
performance is a wise practice. As previously mentioned, some newer high tech
and mid tech lines allow you to go down in size, but make sure the smaller size
will grip properly in self tailers and your rope clutches.
If you are looking for Pre-made halyards and want to expand your search online,
look at Defender Industries, APS, R&W Rope, Mauri Pro Sailing, Jamestown
Distributors, and Torresen Marine.

If there are rough spots on the sheaves they need to be replaced before
switching. Also, you need to make sure the sheave is wide enough for the

Many of the wire-rope sheeves are a v-groove. While not perfect the
v-groove is designed to accommodate both wire and rope. They can "box" the
rope over time but won't cause significant degradation or wear.

Re: Stus-List New lines and hayalards

2018-05-15 Thread ALAN BERGEN via CnC-List
I recently replaced my double braid main halyard with Sta-set X. It was
more difficult to splice than double braid, but I was able to do a
reasonable job. Definitely less stretch, and I'm pleased with the
results. If you Google New England Ropes, you can download their booklet
on splicing.

If there are rough spots on the sheaves they need to be replaced before
switching. Also, you need to make sure the sheave is wide enough for the rope
you want to use.

Stus-List 37 line Recommendations?

2018-05-15 Thread pete.shelquist--- via CnC-List
John -
Here's a reference to help you with loads.
http://www.harken.com/Calculators/

I race and typically go with smaller diameter lines to help them run more
smoothly. 3/8" (10mm) for almost everything except the main halyard is
7/16". But that also means I upgrade the type of line to reduce stretch and
hopefully improve longevity. Don't ask what type of line I bought. It was
3 yrs ago and I don't remember. Somewhere mid-way between the really
expensive stuff and the not as expensive stuff and within the WL of the
line.

The halyard I am replacing was last replaced in 1987, so we did get our money's
worth out of the wire. The wire is actually fine, the rope is what is beat.

I don't see the point in changing to all rope on a cruising boat with roller

If there are rough spots on the sheaves they need to be replaced before

Re: Stus-List Time for new halyard... Recommendations?

2018-05-15 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Steve, you make a reasonable point. If someone is changing their halyards
just to change them then it makes little or no sense. If the halyard needs
replaced, then replacing with all rope is easier and possibly cheaper. You
can do it without special splices and It also allows freshening the nib at
the shackle or doing an end for end swap. As rope ages and where's out it
won't get fish hooks and it won't eat metal components like sheaves and
exit boxes.

The advantages of wire-rope halyards were always limited to low stretch and
reduced weight aloft. Those advantages have been more or less eliminated
by modern day fiber technology.

Stus-List Halyard Tension

2018-05-15 Thread Barry Lenoble via CnC-List
Hey,

What does 'set it and forget it' mean?

No offense, but if you sail in 5 kts of wind and also in 20 kts of wind you
really should be adjusting halyard tension (even on a boat with roller
furling).

In low wind you want the halyard 'soft' so the sail has more draft and
generates more power. In high wind you want a lot of halyard tension - to
flatten the sail and depower it. Then, before you furl it, ease the halyard
to have moderate tension. Your sail will furl easier and the sail and furler
will last longer too.

Re: Stus-List Time for new halyard... Recommendations?

2018-05-15 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
Steve,
There are several reasons to go to an all rope halyard for a cruising boat:
1. While wire does indeed have low stretch, 1/2 of the rope will still be made
from all polyester. In a 45' mast, with a potential 3% elongation at 30% load,
that still translates to nearly 1.5' of stretch. Not insignificant. Most high
modulus ropes stretch around .4% which is far more manageable.
2. A wire halyard fixed in place on a sheave over a long period of time will
exhibit wear and eventually part on the outer radius where it goes around the
sheave. While most stainless wire won't show excessive external corrosion,
stainless isn't corrosion free (check your lifelines sometime to confirm).
When wire wears or frays, it gets nasty meathooks that will wear down sheaves
(usually aluminum) and can shred bare skin like a razor blade
3. Wire is heavy. High modulus rope is light and even in some cases buoyant.
Most folks don't think about adding weight to a cruising boat, but weight aloft
makes for more heel and less stability. As you move away from the center of
gravity of a sailing vessel, the weight of an object gets amplified by the
distance from the CG. Which is why you always need to compensate with a deeper
or heavier keel if you increase your mast height. Adding weight aloft makes
more of a difference than one would think.
4. Sail shape is important whether you race or cruise. I'll support the
rope/wire halyard logic if you still have the old dacron sails that your boat
came with. Pillow case shaped sails can be adjusted with virtually any type of
ropes or wires. But if you've made the investment to upgrade your sails to
something that has some shape for upwind performance, keeping the sails
properly trimmed will make the best of your investment. Old wire halyards
grinding on 35 year old worn wire sheaves aren't going to be likely to turn
easily under loads, which mean your "set it and forget it" jib will have far
too little tension in a blow OR way too tight in light airs.
5. Old rope/wire halyards are likely worn elsewhere beyond the masthead.
Anywhere you can find flat spots, broken fibers on the cover or lumps inside
the rope means that overall strength of the rope is compromised. Some folks
will end for end a rope halyard which extends the life of a rope by changing
out the wear segments (rope clutch for example) to a new section on the line.
You can't do that with halyards made with wire.
6. Technology improvements. Lighter, stronger, better handling, less hassle
(let me know how much fun it was doing a wire to rope splice). Even though I
can listen to AM radio in my car, I prefer the better sound quality of FM or
digital music sources that can connect via Bluetooth devices. Yes, the sound
system probably added to the price of the vehicle, but it was worth it.

parts

Matt, were your foils aka torque tube connections secures with rivets or
screws? I need 6 screws for my old harken furler.

 Listers:

    Due to the inability
to replace a broken torque tube, I am upgrading
from a Harken original
roller furler (1980s vintage MK 1, but not called
that), Unit 2, to the
newer Harken model.  The new one is nearly finished,
and I cut
up/recycled the old foils.  Before I recycle the rest of the old
parts,
does anyone have an interest in them (aside from the broken torque

tube)?  Please advise if you do.  Thanks.
