Stus-List Feathering props...

2016-02-22 Thread David via CnC-List
As I am happy with my MaxProp, I was not paying attention to the last
discussion. My good friend, however is replacing the his fixed three bladed
with a feathering. Cost is not the issue but quality and design is. I like my
Max Prop due to its blades are more conducive to racing, but he is looking for
more bite.

Thanks in advance.

Have you thought about using fiberglass reinforced wall panels like the ones
used in bathrooms. A 4x8 sheet goes for about $30 at Lowes or Home Depot.

This is what a previous owner used on my LF38.Attached is a link to an old
photo showing the panels.

Re: Stus-List Feathering props...

2016-02-22 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
We are very pleased with our feathering three blade prop.

It is a 'J' Prop, made in Italy, represented in the USA by Beta Marine I
think, and by Stright Mackay, and Holland Marine in Canada.

Pitch can be adjusted in the water without tools (other than an Allen key).
All gearing is internal, bathed in waterproof grease.

No discernible prop walk in forward or reverse, and LOTS of reverse.

Re: Stus-List paragon v-drive transmission

2016-02-22 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
One of the times I changed trannies, I had to modify the lever on the tranny.
I had to drill a hole closer to the axis, as It didn’t have enough throw to
completely engage reverse. This shortened the length you had to move the lever.
I have to agree, no one would design a shift wherein you had to hold the lever
with your knee while backing into a slip!

Paragon gear boxes that use the heavier duty Series 64 cables often are prone
to shift issues as it is a mechanical gear box and the throw on the lever is
quite long and requires full engagement. Many times you’ll find it hard to
engage the transmission in gear because of excess friction within the cable,
which for what it’s worth, is likely 40 years old…

In my tenure with Edson, solving gearbox shifter issues could be handled by two
things:

A new cable (which solved 90% of them)

Adjusting the angle at which the cable attaches to the shifter arm at the
gearbox. If the engagement lever was more than 8 degrees +/- from a 90 degree
angle to the cable in neutral, the cable would need to push the lever over
center and would rarely allow complete engagement either forward or reverse.

Trust me when I tell you that the longer shift lever at the pedestal was not
designed to be held by your knee when trying to back your boat into a slip…

My transmission is a Hurth. Sounds like having to hold the reverse lever back,
steer, and control the throttle is not very safe.

Jason,

I have the same transmission/ V-drive on Pegasus. The Paragon is very simply
designed to be held in reverse. The V-drive is made by Walter. If you notice
that on the side of the transmission is a large lever, I was told by a local
expert that it was designed to be held in reverse by pushing the lever aft with
your foot while docking, on our boats you would pull the lever towards you
(because of the V-drive). I assume that you have a fairly large shifter handle
on the binnacle, When down to my slip I will hold it in reverse with my knee.
The way it works is in forward you are engaging a clutch while in reverse you
are applying pressure to a band that is around a drum. the harder you push the
lever in reverse that stronger the engagement.

There is also a universal joint the the tube between the tranny and V-drive
unit, that should be removed and lubed every so often. I have done mine once in
9 years of boat ownership.

Hi

My landfall has the paragon v-drive transmission system. When I go forward it
feels like the leaver “clicks” into place, however, when going in reverse it
feels like it is just friction that is holding it in gear. The problem I am
experiencing is that when in reverse and the rpm’s are up the leaver slips out
of gear. The only way it stays in reverse is to hold the leaver down. I have
tried adjusting the cable tension bolt under the deck to no avail, cable
becomes to hard to move. I am wondering if this is just an issue with my boat
or have others experienced similar problems. If you have had this happen what
is the fix. From what I can find no one really deals with these old
transmission any more. Any help that can be offered is appreciated.

I have both West and Spinlock harnesses on my boat. IMHO the Spinlock is much
better and certainly is more comfortable. The West Marine version is still way

Just a note about the Spinlock harness, which most offshore sailors think is
the best harness going: I have spoken to the company reps and the reason it's
not CG certified is that the process is so long and expensive that it isn't
worth their while.

Stus-List Flooring

2016-02-22 Thread schiller via CnC-List
We are having new cushions made for Corsair by Canvas Innovations in
Holland, Michigan. While we were up finalizing the plan and selecting
fabric, we saw a woven vinyl flooring made by Infinity Vinyl that look
pretty interesting. It is used in Tiara Yachts and he was doing a Ski
boat in his shop. Corsair was built with a fiberglass pan floor. This
flooring is interesting because it is laid down like a rug (with snaps
on the corners, if needed). It is about 1/4" thick and cushioned. The
Admiral was really impressed and is thinking hard about doing a floor
set. It runs $9.58/sq ft, so it's not cheap. I liked the Teak and
Holly pattern. We have always just done throw rugs. This would be a
little step up.

The new cushions (with new backs that are attached directly to the
walls) with all new foam, using Sunbrella material will be around $3,500
complete.

I tried making something similar out of G10 and long bolts. Problem was
the difference between the inside and outside dimension was either1/4 or
3/8 inch, so I could not get a collar. That would press out the old
bearing. My mechanic pulled the tranny and slipped the shaft forward (I
had removed the prop).

My bad. I will be more attentive in the future.

In response to some responses;

I am located in Havre de Grace MD.

I like the look of the homemade bearing pusher, will look into making my
own.

I wouldn't think it would be any worse than a varnished wood floor.

The new cushions (with new backs that are attached directly to the

$3,500 complete.

There are significant differences even between different varnish

Re: Stus-List Sale alert automatic inflatable harness

Hi Bill,

Mustang did the MAC deflatable wings in 1988 with a retail version in 1997.

I still have my "floater coat" from the mid-70s.
The high end unit with a "beavertail" to delay
the onset of hypothermia, developed in
conjunction with a research team at University of Victoria.

Check out the timeline. Especially 1968, 1977 (my
coat) and 1983, pretty interesting eh:

aren't these the guys who invented the things for small vessel use?

I have both West and Spinlock harnesses on my
boat. IMHO the Spinlock is much better and
certainly is more comfortable. The West Marine
version is still way better than none if you
want to save some cash. I bought the cheap one
and then my lovely wife got me a Spinlock for Christmas J J

Just a note about the Spinlock harness, which
most offshore sailors think is the best harness
going: I have spoken to the company reps and the
reason it's not CG certified is that the process
is so long and expensive that it isn't worth their while.
