The ST60 instruments are very reliable. At that price you should stop
thinking and start spending. You will not regret it

IMO the ST60 series is more robust and superior to the newer i50/i60 (which we
have)

Their prices on marine electronics are unbelievable (literally). Seems fishy
but I figured it's worth asking. Some of their stuff is older so it makes sense
that it would be cheap (ST60 three pack for ~700 etc).

Thoughts?

Wow - that is a great price. I have Raymarine speed / depth on my new boat
(no wind instrument at all), a Garmin plotter and Furuno radar. It would
be worth replacing the speed / depth to get a modern package that
integrates natively with the plotter at that price. Please let me know
what you find about the vendor.

reason I asked on this list is because everything listed is discontinued

My latest revision to my dodger was to make the front window zip out & able to

Am fairly happy with this dodger profile on my 33ii.   Make sure you set the
height so that any helmsmen can see over or under the frame.  The Handrails on
the side are very useful.  The bimini design is good, with the exception that
you cannot see the masthead from the helm.  It keeps the rain and sun off.
Strangely, the PO had put a window in the connector piece, between the dodger
and bimini, which cannot be used under sail due to the cockpit traveller.
Also, when the traveller is off to one side, and the sheets are eased, they
foul the side of the dodger.   I have "running dodger stays" where I slack the
one side when the situation occurs.

We like to sail with the dodger window open - better to see.  Make sure you
canvas maker facilitates being able to fast en the window to the top of the
dodger, rather than loosely rolled up in the opening,  blocking view.  I have a
short winch handle that allows me to use the cabin top winches.

Re: Stus-List Engine Overheat Question

2015-10-19 Thread Dreuge via CnC-List
Al,

This sounds like a similar problem I experienced with my old C&C 29 which had a
raw water cooled 2QM15.The alarm only came on only after the engine was
shutdown for a short period of time and then restarted. I would even let the
engine cool at idle speed for a good few minutes before shutting down. I tried
many things, and listened to may good suggestions (air lock, pump wear, …), but
in the end the problem turned out to be a bad thermostat sender.

Maybe that’s your issue too. Do you have a separate sender for the alarm and
for the gauge? If so, then it is unlikely that both would be bad. But if not,
I would start there.

Re: Stus-List Engine Overheat Question

2015-10-19 Thread Gary Nylander via CnC-List
I had the exact same symptoms on my 2QM15 for many years. I tried everything I
could think of. Finally, when it got worse, I followed the water from outside
the hull through all of the parts of the engine. At long last, I found a small
bit of an impeller in the hose leading to the area where the zinc is located on
the front of the engine (after replacing zincs, and nearly everything else). It
was rusty and crusty and must have been there, bouncing around, for years. I
know it must have been there before I bought the boat 20+ years ago, because
every time I replaced the impeller, it was intact. And, even when it was
wailing at me, it had some water coming out of the exhaust, just not as much as
it has now.

So, start at the water inlet and look at everything, one careful step at a
time. Check the hoses, sometimes they look good on the outside but collapse on
the inside, thus blocking water when it is warmed up.

Good luck.

  Al,

This sounds like a similar problem I experienced with my old C&C 29 which had
a raw water cooled 2QM15.The alarm only came on only after the engine was
shutdown for a short period of time and then restarted.

I'm looking for advice on a situation that arose yesterday. I have a 34
with a 3GMD diesel with raw water cooling. I motored for about 45 minutes at
2000 rpm and then shut the engine down. Everything was running smoothly. The
temp gauge showed the normal 100 degrees and I could hear water from the
exhaust. I sailed for about half hour but then lost the wind and turned the
motor on. The high temp alarm stayed on and the gauge showed 140 degrees. I
shut it down and checked the water filter, which looked fine. I tried starting
it a couple more times with the same result, so I sailed back to my harbor.
When I went to start it, everything worked fine again, and I ran the motor for
a good 30 minutes with no issues. The gauge stayed at 100 the whole time and no
alarm.

I initially thought it might have been the impeller (which is about 1.5
years old right now), but when the problem arose I didn't check for the sound
of exhaust water. Since it was working back at the harbor, I don't think the
impeller was bad. I'm starting to think that the sending unit malfunctioned and
then reset itself somehow but that's never happened before.

I'm not sure what temp triggers the high temp alarm and whether the same
sending unit goes to both the alarm and the gauge.

Am I missing something obvious?
Were there other steps I should have taken to diagnose it? I was of course
concerned to run the engine for long if it was overheating.
What next steps should I take, since everything seems fine right now.

Thanks in advance for any help.

On my 3GM I had an overheating problem and ended up discovering that the
pulley for the water pump was spinning on the shaft as the set screw had
come loose.

Re: Stus-List Sale Tools

2015-10-19 Thread Dr. Mark Bodnar via CnC-List

Steve,
I'm interested to know how it works out.
I could use new instruments (mine are just original depth and speed
from 1986) - plus I've been hankering for a autopilot.
That site is selling a Raymarine SPX-5 Wheelpilot for $675 (vs $1900
for a EV-100 kit from Binnacle).
http://www.sale-tools.com/products/Raymarine-SPX%252d5-Wheelpilot-Pack-with-p70.html

From what I can find the SPX-5 is ~7yrs old.  Any thoughts from the
group on the value of newer technology? I could add the ST60 pack
for $659 (rather than $1800 for a current set). and still spend less
than I was thinking for just an autopilot. -- I'm guessing it's
smarter to match the Raymarine autopilot with the Raymarine
instruments rather than the Garmin.

Both use the NMEA2000 and SeaTalk - so they should work together and
with other gear.

Any thoughts?  If it's just older gear at a good price then might be
a good deal.. Ok  - A little searching for reviews looks like
the site is bogus.
Just for interest I tried entering an order using fake address etc -
they want a bank transfer sent - do not accept credit cards or even
PayPal!

Shoot.  Enough to get my hopes up.

Mark,

if you find an autopilot for under $1000, let me know. Defender had (still
has?) a boat show special, but even with their discounts, when you add the
conversion to CAD, it is a lot of money. Not to mention that if you buy at
Binnacle you have someone local to yell at, if anything goes wrong.

I don’t think Garmin has a wheel option; they are all (?) suing a linear drive

http://www.sale-tools.com/products/Raymarine-SPX%252d5-Wheelpilot-Pack-with-p70.html

From what I can find the SPX-5 is ~7yrs old. Any thoughts from the
group on the value of newer technology? I could add the ST60 pack for
$659 (rather than $1800 for a current set). and still spend less than
I was thinking for just an autopilot. -- I'm guessing it's smarter to
match the Raymarine autopilot with the Raymarine instruments rather
than the Garmin.

Both use the NMEA2000 and SeaTalk - so they should work together and
with other gear.

Any thoughts? If it's just older gear at a good price then might be a
good deal.. Ok - A little searching for reviews looks like the
site is bogus.
Just for interest I tried entering an order using fake address etc -
they want a bank transfer sent - do not accept credit cards or even
PayPal!

Shoot. Enough to get my hopes up.

The ST60 instruments are very reliable. At that price you
should stop thinking and start spending. You will not regret it

IMO the ST60 series is more robust and superior to the newer
i50/i60 (which we have)

I have had the st 60 pack on Alianna for 7 or 8 years now and I
really like it, big numbers easy to read and no big issues with
any component yet. that is a very good price

Their prices on marine electronics are unbelievable (literally).
Seems fishy but I figured it's worth asking. Some of their stuff
is older so it makes sense that it would be cheap (ST60 three
pack for ~700 etc).

Thoughts?

Re: Stus-List Dodger for 34+

2015-10-19 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
Our dodger is made in six panels. One panel is the "roof", one the front
window, one panel for each side, including the window, and one in each
front corner, connecting the side panels to the front. Any of these can be
unzipped and removed (except the two front corners) and the frame and top
will stay in place.

Works nice this way.

heck the Raymarine site is actually beating defenders price by over $110 on a
EV200 below deck auto pilot plus free shipping makes it an even better deal.
Not sure about taxes though... I didn't really look at the wheel pilots
though... I'll try and see where i got the one for the Viking. i remember it
was a good deal. Danny

Re: Stus-List Sale Tools

2015-10-19 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Here is what I know about RayMarine autopilots.
The autopilot is the most important electronics on the boat and the biggest
bang for the buck.
Wait for a sale.
Bought a wheel pilot from Defender in 2003 for $779.
The control head went bad this past June after 12 years. Looked into underdeck
systems and the extra $1000 or more for a linear drive and the labor and
expense to install, convinced me to go wheel pilot.
Bought a complete wheel autopilot EV-100 kit in July for $1339 from
AnchorExpress.com
It contained a P-70 control head, a sensor, a Computer Unit w multiple motion
sensors and an ST-4000 MKIII wheel steerer, and cables.
Upgraded my warranty w Raymarine to three years for free. Still waiting for a
promised $200 rebate.
