Stus-List Alianna's big splash 2015

2015-06-19 Thread dwight veinot via CnC-List
I am very pleased to report that Alianna was launched on Wednesday past and
got her sails put on, cockpit led running rigging setup and standing
rigging rough tuned yesterday ; she is now resting peacefully on her moorig
in Schooner Cove expecting to do a shake down sail tomorrow if all goes as
planned. Her deep cycle batteries held charge well over the winter and
seem strong and reliable, that's 9 consecutive years now and never off the
boat since day one. Surpisingly all electronics worked well without any
problem but I did realize after about 10 minutes that the gps chart plotter
does require the card to be installed, a small oversight caused by the
excitement of being afloat after the long winter on the hard. She cleaned
up very well thanks to Awlgrip, Awlwash and Awlcare and a new coat of black
International bottm paint and the interior stayed surpisingly fresh and
clean during winter storage thanks to ample ventilation and a garboard
drain. I did have to rebed 3 fixed lenses in my Beckson ports...for which
I used 3M 5200 with some trepedation but I don't ever want to remove these
lenses again, so if reports are correct about the adhesive tenacity of 5200
and this works over the long haul there may indeed be a place to use 3M
5200 on a sailboat...time will tell and I'll be sure to let you all know.

Based on the advice from this group I left batteries on board over the winter
as well. Same results. 5+ year old batteries still charged and ready to go.

Stus-List Tools on Board

2015-06-19 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
I also have a 260 or so pieces socket set on board that I bought for a
screaming deal at Lowes' fathers day sale a couple years ago .

Being on a lake, I don't do extended cruising or anything offshore. In
fact more than 50% of my boat's use is drag racing around the cans in club
races where extra weight is supposed to hurt me... So why do I have it
onboard? My house and regular toolset is 30 miles away from the boat so
to get a missing / forgotten tool I either have to (re)buy the tools
somewhere near the boat one at a time for a huge premium or drive 60 miles
round trip to get them from home. As for borrowing stuff: for whatever
reason no one on my dock seems to have what I need when I need it.

What goes into 260 pieces? Metric set short and deep socket / SAE set
short and deep socket. On a 25 year old Canadian made / American operated
boat that has a random mix of SAE and Metric stuff, I have used a
surprisingly high percentage of all of the above. The benefits of having
both short and deep sockets on my boats' impossible to reach stuff speaks
for itself.

That is definitely the some of the best couple hundred bucks I have spent
on this boat.

Re: Stus-List 12 volt cordless drill

2015-06-19 Thread Joe Della Barba via CnC-List
I just bought Lithium batteries for my drills. The difference in battery
life and charging time is AMAZING. I would not even consider a non-lithium
tool now.

I have a Ryobi drill and cutting tool on the boat and a Sears drill at home
both with the upgraded batteries. The Ryobi is a better drill except the
original NiCad battery pack was worthless.

The first time we tried this the crew sent below for booze came up with a
bottle of Courvoisier, it worked as well as cheap vodka if you catch a
classy fish.

Second leg of the Bermuda 1-2 started yesterday.

These guys will be surprised if the see sailboats headed the opposite
direction!

Re: Stus-List Pacific Sea stories

2015-06-19 Thread Martin DeYoung via CnC-List
>… with “when we were young and fit” stories. You’re depressing me. ;-)

Looking back it was cool to be a young and enthusiastic racer in the 70’s and
80’s when C&C type racer/cruisers were being raced competitively by “friends
and family” crews with owners that worked on their own boats and post-race
parties were whole fleet affairs. The camaraderie amongst the fleet along with
the sense of Corinthian style adherence to the racing rules enhanced the
owner’s sense of value for the $$ invested.

Following this year’s VOR has left several very deep impressions. One is how
athletic (mostly young, all fit) the crews need to be to sail at anything close
to 100%. The physical training and nutritional programs are impressive. At
the peak of my offshore racing I was not aware of any crew, including the “gold
platers” that ran training and nutrition programs. Mostly it was a discussion
on what type of beer to have onboard for happy hour with the nutrition left up
to the wives and girlfriends. I don’t think I could last a full day as a VOR
65 crew.

Another impression is how well the VOR management and skippers have been
keeping up the sense of fair play with the one design concept boats/sails
maintained by an independent maintenance crew. The tight racing even after
5,000 miles along with the fleet’s reliability have enhanced the spectator
value. I have watched several finishes live when the order of finish was in
doubt up to the last 20 minutes or so.

And lastly, the balance of promotion and branding by the organizers and
sponsors has not ruined the experience. Some events go too far into the ISAF /
Professional business direction for my taste. Other events go into way too
much of the participants personal lives/story. The VOR management seems to
have pulled off an acceptable balance between the various commercial needs
which gives me optimism for the next event.

Okay Martin, enough with “when we were young and fit” stories. You’re
depressing me. ;-)

Got back last Monday from helping one of my “old” racing buddies and other old
race crew deliver his Sabre 426 from Annapolis to Block Island in preparation
(Storm Trysail member and PRO) for BI Race week. I was the “young kid” at 63…

It was funny though; we picked up 20 knot Southwesterlies off Atlantic City and
set the asym. Hoisted that sucker till it was blocked only to see in fall into
the water to leeward. Shackle opened up. The offending person, aka The Owner,
started up the mast to retrieve the halyard. After banging around at the first
spreader he motioned to us to drop him back to the deck.

See, with old age comes wisdom…

Cheers,

On a much smaller scale five C&C 27 are entered into the NOD Regatta for this
weekend (in Ottawa, http://nod.nsc.ca/). To be honest, I am surprised at the
(low) number – there are more than 30 C&C 27s (and over 60 C&Cs overall) on the
lake (river).

David was doing really well but has sailed well right of his class and is
losing spots. Lots like a couple days of nasty upwind sailing ahead but
staying right could pay off big later.
