Sam,

Well for certain I’m filled with envy considering I’m sitting in the Pacific
North West and thought last weekends 63 degrees was fantastic for sailing
(winds 10 - 15 KTS). But I’d much rather be where you are! I’m a relatively
new sailor with a 26’ that I’ve had for about 6 months - and I’m always anxious
to learn the nuances of the boat. It came with a large selection of very nice
sails (6) and my first attempts at sailing her went very well and I was solo.
While new at sailing boats I have a lifetime of using the wind for power with
over 30 years as a hang glider pilot, wind surfer, and paraglider pilot. So
it’s learning the mechanics of how best to set sails; at this point the proper
way of raising the sails. I’m taking ASA sailing lessons in April which should
show me some of the equipment that I’m not familiar with. If you have any
words of wisdom aside from sitting in a bar in Antigua, sounds so nice, I
surely appreciate it.

Kind Regards,

Happy winter everyone.
I'm just taking a moment to appreciate vintage C&Cs and their ability to make

wintered in Florida and this season successful began exploring the Bahamas.
His

Anyone else on the list with the CB version do any offshore cruising? I'm

Sam,

for some winter reading get yourself some books on trim and sail use and
general sailing.

There are few online (PDF) sources that might be of interest (e.g.:
http://sfbaysss.net/resource/doc/SinglehandedTipsThirdEdition.pdf, or
http://setsail.com/mwh.pdf, or http://setsail.com/sts.pdf).

But probably the best one book I could recommend is Don Guillette’s Sail Trim
Guide (http://www.sailtrimproducts.com/sail_trim_users_guide.html). This might
be the best $25 you ever spend on the boat.

Sam,

I have to say you're a hell of a lot smarter than me.. I'm working at Fort
Lewis (Program Manager) providing aviation maintenance support throughout
the Western United States including Alaska and Hawaii and you're sitting in
a bar in Antigua!

I'm taking a similar course that will certify me ASA 103 near Tyee Marina
in Tacoma - should also be a larger vessel and the cost are similar. Like
you I am anal about sail form and shape and while I may not be looking for
speed I am looking for efficiency.

Learning about my 26' is fun; I also have an Ericson 23' that I take out in
light winds basically because it's easier to prepare. I do appreciate
your taking time from your busy schedule to respond and if you have any
secrets on the 26 I'd surely appreciate it.

Have a great time!

Dan

Hi Brent,
I've always felt offshore capabilities of various boats depended more on the
skipper than the boat. Look at what Slocum took around the world. Now they are
crossing ocean with rowboats.

I've always been a fan of Finnistere, the S&S 38ft centerboarder that won
Newport to Bermuda race several times and also did some long cruises
http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=5663

I should think a C&C 34 CB known to be tender, could still be handled in most
conditions, and the shoal draft should be great for the shallows areas.

Call me crazy, but I also think your 27 MkV could be trailered to Florida in
1/10th the time and sailed to the islands just fine. Pick your weather and
window and go.

Though I like the idea of trailer ing down to Fla and sailing across, (and
you're right, it would be easy with the 27), I'm looking forward to doing a
little exploring on the way down from the Chesapeake, hopping in and out of the

Brent,

My 1981 40' is the big brother of the 34'. Although we are a deep draft (7'6")
the hull shapes are probably very similar. I can tell you Corsair has been
out in "stuff" (40+ knots) in the Gulf of Main and the Gulf Stream on the way
to and fro Bermuda. Her handling and construction has never let me down and in
fact, if all goes to plan, we plan on taking her "cross the pond" in 2017.

And at the other end of the spectrum her light air capabilities are great.
Will go 3-4 knots when others are motoring and burning fuel.

skipper than the boat. Look at what Slocum took around the world. Now they
are crossing ocean with rowboats.

Happy winter everyone.
I'm just taking a moment to appreciate vintage C&Cs and their ability to make
dreams come true. One of my crew purchased a 1984ish 34 CB near Toronto a
little over a year ago, took it across the lake, through the canals to the ICW,
wintered in Florida and this season successful began exploring the Bahamas.
His
spot is showing him just outside of Nassau and with his adventurous spirit, who
knows where he'll end up next. He's sailing more or less solo choosing to tag
along with someone going that way for safety.
Anyone else on the list with the CB version do any offshore cruising? I'm
curious on how they handle a big sea.

Re: Stus-List 34 offshore

2015-01-28 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
Brent,

Although it was not a CB version, many years ago I delivered a C&C 34 from Ft.
Lauderdale to Port Royal, Jamaica, no stops.

It was that experience that made me very interested in C&C’s and because of
that when I happened to see what is now Ronin abandoned in a yard, I was
confident in the fact that I would be owning what would be a very nice sailing
and sea-keeping boat.

I don’t think that you will be unduly disadvantage by having a CB version
versus the full keel version. As others have mentioned, it would be perfect for
a trip down the ICW and most certainly for the skinny areas of the Bahamas. My
brother’s father-in-law, a 20-year Navy destroyer captain and lifelong sailboat
racer and offshore cruiser wouldn’t have anything other that a CB sailboat.

A favorable impression that I had about the boat was that although we spent
most of the time going to windward down the "Thorny Path” it was easy to sail,
pretty dry and comfortable. We didn’t experience any “big” seas fortunately and
once we bore off and ran down the Trades to Jamaica with the ‘chute up it was
great fun.

And I concur with Chuck, pick your season, the right weather window and pretty
much any well-found boat will be fine in the Bahamas. The CB will open up a lot
more anchorages than the 6’ 8” draft of my boat which I have dreams of taking
to the Bahamas.

Sometimes it’s the journey, not the boat.

Best,
Dave Godwin

Re: Stus-List 34 offshore

2015-01-28 Thread John Pennie via CnC-List
As others have mentioned it's more about the sailor and weather than the boat.
With that said a 34 would leave very little room for error and wouldn't be my
first choice. Fine for the ICW and a hop to the Bahamas but for extended
offshore... not so much. Aside from that, cargo capacity becomes a top
priority for longer term sailing. Geometry is working against the 34 there.

I always liked the 34 and may yet own one someday. I'll keep her within the
design parameters.

Just an opinion

John

Re: Stus-List 34 offshore

2015-01-28 Thread Brent Driedger via CnC-List
Thanks for the info guys. I'm not planning anything right now, this is more
food for thought. I gotta get the young ones raised first since the Admiral
will have no part in cruising. This particular boat is not my first choice for
a crossing of any kind but since my crew member is in the midst of it in just
such a yacht, I was wondering how it would treat him.
According to his blog he crossed the Gulf Stream under power at night to get to
Bimini. Seems like a waste of a good sailing opportunity to me but then again
I write this from the warm comfort of my house.

Stus-List Universal M4-30

2015-01-28 Thread jason shoemake via CnC-List
I've found a Universal M4-30 close to home, 100 miles away, $3,000. Does
anyone have any experience with these? Are parts available? The seller says its
been completely rebuilt and has one hour on it, was on eBay earlier this year
for $4,5000, why didn't it sell?? My '78 29-1 has long since had the A4 gutted
along with the fuel tank, panel, shaft and everything but the strut, gone! It
was gifted to me with a long shaft 9.9.She's on the hard here in Mississippi,
needing a few other things as well.I just cant bring myself to launch her with
that O/B astern.
So the question I'm asking is Pull the trigger on the M4 or hold off, wait
for a better opportunity?
Thanks,Jason ShoemakeSV Bijou

Re: Stus-List 34 offshore

2015-01-28 Thread Steve Sharkey via CnC-List
I've also had my 1983 37 centerboard to and from Bermuda a couple of times as
well as Annapolis to Newport. Conditions included over 40 knots and a rough
Gulf Stream crossing coming home last year and the boat handles the weather
very well and with good crew comfort.

Stus-List Ontario 32 in British Columbia

2015-01-28 Thread Peter Fell via CnC-List
Unfortunately, neither the listing agent:
http://www.thunderbirdmarine.com/boat-info.php?ID=4160 nor the owner:
http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sailboat/vancouver/very-nice-cruiser-with-all-you-need-to-sail-the-sea/1036437114?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
can spell ... and the owner is a bit shaky on who actually built the boat!
Looks pretty basic but $18,000 from the owner or $19,750 from the broker ...
that’s $14,500 or $15,900 US. With 600 hrs on a FWC Yanmar. H..___

2015-01-28 Thread Jim Watts via CnC-List
Off and running on the upgrade path!
The 32 is a nice boat, the cockpit in particular is great.
That one looks like it has had something done to the windows, and owner
mods are always suspect.

Even mine.

Re: Stus-List Gray PVC plumbing fittings source?

2015-01-28 Thread Jim Watts via CnC-List
The fittings are standard pipe thread, when they go I convert them to 1/2"
nylon reinforced hose, no more mystery leaks.

Stus-List My old 24' up for sale

2015-01-28 Thread Paul Baker via CnC-List
I saw Tangerine, my previous boat listed,
http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/CC-24_23913326
Current owner spent a fair bit on her, although the interior was done by yours
truly. Anyway, if you know anyone looking, she's a good boat and I'd love to
see her go to a good home.
Cheers,
Paul

Nice looking interior!

I still get a kick out of someone who managed to replace a boat called
Tangerine with a boat called Orange Crush ... without involving a renaming
ceremony!
