Re: Stus-List Play in the steering

Alan,

Are you able to reach all of the bolts through the access ports? The nut
actually came off one of my forward bolts. I'm going to try putting a nut
in a socket and hope I get lucky enough to have it catch. I cant get my
hand in there. (I was able to tighten the aft bolts.) Any other
suggestions?

On my 35/3 it is set to 14 degrees. The Kanzai transmission is 2.6 to 1.
The newer models can be adjusted under water. The old ones cannot.

I agree that Fred Hutchinson is the best place to start.

Re: Stus-List Prop Grease (Now Max-Prop settings)

2014-07-28 Thread Martin DeYoung via CnC-List
I agree with Josh on contacting Hutch at PYI to get the best info. Your
description of being unable to reach full RPM when in gear does sound like a
reduction in pitch is called for.

I have changed the pitch on Calypso's MAX Prop several times including the
original effort at installation. For a few years I intentionally ran 10% over
pitch to reduce cruise speed RPM. Before we went around Vancouver Island
(2011) I reduced pitch by one increment to be sure we could achieve full RPM
(horsepower) when motoring into bigger waves and higher winds. The reduction
to cruise speed (at a smooth engine RPM) was about .2 knot with no measurable
change in fuel consumption.

The MAX prop owner's manual has the chart that describes the X Y relationship
to pitch. I have heard tales of divers willing and able to change the pitch on
a classic MAX prop underwater. I would not attempt it myself and in the past
set up a deal with a yard to haul and hold in the slings for the change then
re-launch. It may take several haul/launch cycles if you want to fully
optimize the pitch.

Re: Stus-List Play in the steering

2014-07-28 Thread Wally Bryant via CnC-List
I have a selection of ratchet extenders on board, from 12" to 3", and
have used them more than once to place nuts on my boat. Handy ratchet
extenders, in my opinion, have rounded ends that allow a bit of play so
you don't have to line up the ratchet just exactly perfect. However, if
you need more than one extender, it's best to only have one rounded one
in the series, else it's hard to control. I've also found it useful to
stick a glob of masking tape, or chewing gum, in the socket to hold the
nut in place. I actually have a few sockets packed with glop and look
at them fondly, although I can't remember when or why.

Joel,

You might have to break down and go through the lazarette. It’s really not
that bad once you remove the port scupper drain. I checked the screws on my
rudder post. They are all perfectly aligned with the boat centerline, just the
way the factory left them. Now I need to find out if the nuts are still tight!
