Re: Stus-List winterizing engine

2013-11-15 Thread Della Barba, Joe
My boat has a T on the inlet and one hose goes to the engine and one to the
wash-down pump. To winterize I just shut off the thru-hull and pull the hose
off the wash-down pump and stick it in a bucket with anti-freeze in it. The
following only applies to raw water cooled engines, so all the FWC boats can
ignore this. I stick an extra hose on the exhaust and run that into the bucket
too so the antifreeze circulates for a while. This allows the engine to get
hot and clears any water trapped by a closed thermostat.

2013-11-15 Thread Marek Dziedzic
Jim,

funny how these things mushroom. I started with replacing the stuffing box and
decided on the PSS. Then I ended up replacing the shaft, coupling and the
cutlass bearing.

The good thing is that the shaft will probably last longer than I own the boat.

The bad thing is that after all costs are added (parts and labour), I bet it
was a nice $1k upgrade.

2013-11-15 Thread Marek Dziedzic
Dwight,

I don’t intend on bragging, but we are normally about 7-10 C colder in winter
than you are.

I lived by the sea for many years and I know how the extra wind chill and
humidity can feel, but for the hard freeze of the water it does not matter that
much.

I know that the 20 l of antifreeze is probably too much, but it is a cheap
insurance. Maybe I would need less, if I had someone watching the exhaust, but
I do all the maintenance singlehanded.

Hi Danny,

In most cases it is pretty obvious if the joint has been exposed to
seawater and/or oxygen for any length of time. A "bright" bronze is
recent exposure. Normal power washing won't clean up tarnish.

Any indication of fresh bronze in the broken area?
