Stus-List Coaming boxes

Has anyone added coaming boxes in the cockpit? Was it worth the effort to
store suntan lotion, etc?

Re: Stus-List Bermuda to Norfolk

2013-07-01 Thread Della Barba, Joe

I didn't wreck any, but my brother and some other crew did. My brother crashed
on the way to the dive boat, so I wrapped his leg with a garbage bag and duct
tape to keep blood from attracting sharks. This seemed like a GREAT idea at age
16 LOL.
As for cruising, I have a Cruising Guide to Bermuda around someplace. You
certainly can do this and there are places to go, but it isn't like say the
Chesapeake or even the BVIs. There is Saint George at one end and Hamilton at
the other. Think Annapolis and Baltimore scaled down with nice blue water. In
between are coves you can anchor in, but the whole island is developed and
residential. There are no real isolated coves that I can recall and the nicest
beaches are obviously facing the ocean and you are not going to want to anchor
off a beach exposed like that. So the most likely cruise would be going from
one end to the other with maybe a midpoint stop. Be prepared to spend . The
last time I was there we had no defined date to leave, it was stay until the
cash was at 0 and then go. We left a lot earlier than I thought we would!

Subject: Stus-List Music in cockpit
I wanted to install a sound system in the cockpit of my 29-2 for many years but
didn't want to drill large holes in the fiberglass to mount the speakers.
Conventional marine speakers and grills always seem to get accidentally damaged
in the cockpit of a sailboat. Water damage to speakers is another issue even if
they are rated "waterproof". I installed 4 sound exciters instead of
conventional speakers which elegantly addressed my concerns. Here is a link to
my solution. See the "description" on You Tube for more details. I am extremely
happy with the final results and the sound quality is better than I had
imagined. The wired remote which controls the main stereo unit is fitted to the
existing access port on the side of the cockpit. I just posted this information
onto the cncphotoalbum site in the "FORUM" under the section for C&C 29"s but
wanted to share this with the rest of the group. These sound exciters are great
for cabin installations too.

Re: Stus-List Coaming boxes

2013-07-01 Thread Rick Brass
Like Fred, I have mesh bags for this purpose. One on the stern rail on
either side of the helm sized for stuff like cigs, cell phones, and glasses.
One on either side of the companionway that are usable for larger stuff. I
also had a mesh "tray" about 4 inches deep made to fit across the hump in
the helm seat - call it 10" wide by 24" long by 4" deep. Larger stiff like
suntan lotion, the box for the control head for the autopilot, empty pop
cans and water bottles that would otherwise be in the cockpit end up in the
tray. Folks will also pit things like cameras into the top of the sheet bags
attached on either side of the companionway that are used for the halyard
tails.

I've forgotten what the larger "stuff" bags cost - maybe $30 for both of
them - but the tray was around $50 including the cost of the batten stock
that spans the seat and from which the tray hangs.

I had a Newport 28 and have sailed on a Pearson 30 that had coaming boxes.
Besides the teak frames rotting out over time, the boxes seemed to collect
wet and moldy lines and other junk, and always seemed to have water in them.
I have developed an aversion to coaming boxes based on my experience.

I decided on the Electric Yachts out of Minnesota. Last year I had a chance to
sail on a twin 1974 C&C 35-II which was outfitted with the same unit and I was
impressed. FYI building the battery box took forever, as was the engineering
how to fix it to the area where the fuel tank used to be, but we are making
progress.

For the technically minded, it is the 10HP version.

Jorge

Alera, 1990 37+/40 Wing Keel here.

This is our 2nd year with Alera, so we are still in the Honeymoon
stage. We are cruisers, so I won't comment on the race capability of
the 47+/40. But, she sure sails like a thoroughbred. Alera was a
great lakes boat with less than 500 hrs on her engine, a real cream
puff. Treated well, and never sailed too hard or raced as far as I
know. I decided on the model and then looked at a bunch before
getting Alera. I felt it was a perfect configuration for my wife and
I and I am convinced I was absolutely correct in that.

I'll echo what Edd said about the cockpit...we are still getting used
to it due to it being so relatively shallow, especially compared to
our 35 MK 1. We added rail seats in the corners of the aft pulpit
which provides additional spots for sitting and helped. Cushions and
pillows also help. Of course, the aft stateroom make it a small
price to pay.

Coming up from a 35 MK1 to the 37+ was a little daunting at first,
but now we fell right at home and the two of us (both in our 60's)
have no trouble with her. On extended cruises we seems to like being
on board more an more as the trip progresses.

I installed Kato Davits and we carry a 9' Avon with a 9.9 taitsu
which seems to balance the anchor, windlass, chain combo nicely. Go figure.

Gert Tiel did our survey and since she had spent most of her life at
Niagara on the Lake (C&C home port) I had a high comfort level in his
ability to spot issues, though we bought her on the hard in the
winter, so locating moisture was not really possible. But no issues
whatsoever. I did hear of a 37+ here in Seattle recently that had
delamination issues, though I do not know if it was with the balsa
core deck or kevlar hull. But that might be a deal killer for
anyone. No deck/hull joint issues on Alera or on any other 37+ that I know

My bulkheads have Barton "line-tamers" from with which I hang halyards and
other lines, so I can't put bags there. There are all-plastic coaming
boxes. The only downside is if they stick out too much they are not
comfortable to sit against.
Replacing the teak on a Pearson coaming box is a PIA. Did it on my 28.
Water was never an issue. Might have had drains.

Re: Stus-List Coaming boxes

2013-07-01 Thread jtsails
The SSI Plastics boxes are angled so that the water drains out and doesn't
collect and they are all plastic so nothing to rot. I know what you mean on
some of the built-in boxes though.

Like Fred, I have mesh bags for this purpose. One on the stern rail on
either side of the helm sized for stuff like cigs, cell phones, and glasses.
One on either side of the companionway that are usable for larger stuff. I also
had a mesh "tray" about 4 inches deep made to fit across the hump in the helm
seat - call it 10" wide by 24" long by 4" deep. Larger stiff like suntan
lotion, the box for the control head for the autopilot, empty pop cans and
water bottles that would otherwise be in the cockpit end up in the tray. Folks
will also pit things like cameras into the top of the sheet bags attached on
either side of the companionway that are used for the halyard tails.

I've forgotten what the larger "stuff" bags cost - maybe $30 for both of them
- but the tray was around $50 including the cost of the batten stock that spans
the seat and from which the tray hangs.

I had a Newport 28 and have sailed on a Pearson 30 that had coaming boxes.
Besides the teak frames rotting out over time, the boxes seemed to collect wet
and moldy lines and other junk, and always seemed to have water in them. I have
developed an aversion to coaming boxes based on my experience.

Has anyone added coaming boxes in the cockpit? Was it worth the effort to
store suntan lotion, etc?

The only possible impediment I see is the bolts from my secondary winches.

Stus-List Music in Cockpit

2013-07-01 Thread Bob Hickson
Ted,

Is there a reason that you used an 8 ohm exciter?

My stereo is set up for 4 ohm speakers.

Re: Stus-List Music in cockpit

2013-07-01 Thread Ted Drossos
Joe, the sound exciters that I used are rated for 20 watts continuous power
with a burst power rating of 40 watts. They are made by Hiwave, model number
HIAX32C20-8

Bob, I used two 8 ohm sound exciters per channel. They are wired in parallel so
the amp is seeing a 4 ohm load. I was going to install three exciters per
channel in the cockpit which would have been 2.66 ohms wired in parallel. My
stereo could handle that but the sound was so good with only two per channel, I
didn't install the rest of them. I'll pick up two more and install a total of
four exciters in the cabin.
