Is it recommended to periodically replace the hydraulic fluid in the Navtec
backstay adjusters?

If so is it a DIY project and what is the recommended replacement fluid?

I have the same original unit as Jake. The fluid apparently had never been
changed. It was like molasses instead of looking like vegetable oil. It
would have been cheaper to replace it, but I didn't know that going in, so I
had it all flushed and rebuilt.

My Navtec adjuster is probably an older unit than what you have. It came to
me with the boat so I am guessing it is probably around 15 or more years
old. It is an integral unit and the gage and knob for the relief valve are
attached on opposite sides near the base of the square looking cylinder. I
think it reads in psi and its readings correlate quite well at around
800-1200 psi when I check backstay tension with my Loos gage but my
inexpensive Loos gage max's out at around 1200 on 9/32 wire so it is not
useful for tension comparisons above that. I have tensioned the backstay
incrementally to 3000 lbs according to its gage but as I said earlier
tensions above 1200 psi has no noticeable effect on pointing ability or boat
speed but a slight effect on weather helm and head stay sag. I spend my
cruising time fiddling around with a lot of adjustments and measurements but
I am happy to admit that I am still learning and very interested in what
others have to contribute.

I guess I have been lucky that the hydraulic seals have lasted as long as
they have without problems.

Dwight,

If you Navtec gauge is like mine (in a panel), it probably reads direct
pressure, not the pressure exerted on the backstay. They would be the same
if the piston area was 1 sq. inch, but otherwise the pressure times the
piston area will give you the tension on the backstay.

Dwight,

Navtec sells a fluid in about a 32 ounce bottle. I only found one rigger
in Annapolis who carried it. Becasue my whole system needed to be flushed
and rebuilt I did not tackle it, but it seems like you should be able to
DIY. On the system that I have there is a reservoir, pump and piston. The
fluid was sticking to the inside of the reservoir, so that had to be
replaced too.
I don't know if there is a recommended service interval, but if the fluid
is cloudy I would seriously consider changing it. If you have a newer
system that is all one unit it should be much easier.

Dwight,

I've replaced the fluid in my system and it was a pretty easy job to
pump out the old fluid and replace it.

Navtec does sell fluid, but you'd be better off dollar-wise getting
standard hydraulic fluid at most larger auto supply stores. Autozone sells
64-oz bottles at $20. It's the same stuff.

All the best,

Thanks Joel

Mine is an older unit, a think maybe about 10-15 years old. It has been
working fine and I don't really want to open it, which I will have to do to
see the fluid.

For others on the list who have one installed: is periodic inspection and/or
replacement of the fluid usual practice?

I might try that first. I have an old laptop with a camera. Aim it into
the bilge with a ruler in the bilge so I can see if the pump is working.
Its not as good as an alarm, but its better than not having anything.

on my headlight, the floorboards were floating almost up to the
settee cushions. Could be worse. . .

We use a household water filter from Home Depot on the fill, before
the water goes into the tank. The tanks have been cleaned, once, and
because we live aboard, we run more water through the system in a
month than most summer sailors do in a year. Works for us.

I was filling my bow water tank the other day and was thinking it
was taking a long time. Hmmm? No water coming out the vent. I
decided to go below and take a look and the cabin was ankle deep!
After pumping the bilge, I could find nothing wrong and the tank was
full to the brim. WTF? Where was it leaking? I put the hose in again
and discovered the FILL HOSE was coming apart under pressure and
dumping all the water in the bilge and then coming back together
afterwards. Got that all straight and then the pump died :(

Now I have a new pump I am getting inspired to move it someplace
forward. Right now it is under the starboard cockpit locker which
routes the water hoses part the engine. This water gets quite hit
from being near the engine and I wonder if it contributes to bad
taste to be heated like that. I was thinking of moving the pump
someplace forward.

Question: Is anyone running filters? I have a carbon filter in the
line to the head sink and it seems to work well for a couple months
and then start making the water worse instead of better. Is there a
better way to do this?

I might try that first. I have an old laptop with a camera. Aim it into the
bilge with a ruler in the bilge so I can see if the pump is working. Its not
as good as an alarm, but its better than not having anything.

Unless you're watching, it won't help. There are wireless bilge and boat

Do some research to see if one satisfies your needs.

I would rig a loud alarm to a float switch higher than the normal one that runs

Stus-List Backstay ram rebuild & fluid

2012-11-27 Thread Chuck S
Navtec Backstay Ram
Years ago the seal started leaking on the backstay ram. Chesapeake Rigging
wanted $795 to inspect and rebuild it, and the work may reveal more expensive
parts will be needed. (A new ram would cost a little over a grand.) Instead, I
took the unit to a local hydraulic repair shop. They said the O-ring hailed
because the sun's UV. They replaced all of the O-rings and bench tested the
unit to 2x max pressure in front of me. The technicain said the O-rings cost
him about 50 cents total and $5.00 would cover the work. I gave him the $5 and
a $20 for beer.

He told me to drain the red auto transmission fluid from the system and replace
with 10 weight non-detergent oil from NAPA, which I did.

Dwight,

I've replaced the fluid in my system and it was a pretty easy job to pump out
the old fluid and replace it.

Navtec does sell fluid, but you'd be better off dollar-wise getting standard
hydraulic fluid at most larger auto supply stores. Autozone sells 64-oz bottles
at $20. It's the same stuff.

All the best,

Dwight,

Navtec sells a fluid in about a 32 ounce bottle. I only found one rigger in
Annapolis who carried it. Becasue my whole system needed to be flushed and
rebuilt I did not tackle it, but it seems like you should be able to DIY. On
the system that I have there is a reservoir, pump and piston. The fluid was
sticking to the inside of the reservoir, so that had to be replaced too.
I don't know if there is a recommended service interval, but if the fluid is
cloudy I would seriously consider changing it. If you have a newer system that
is all one unit it should be much easier.

I have the same original unit as Jake. The fluid apparently had never been
changed. It was like molasses instead of looking like vegetable oil. It would
have been cheaper to replace it, but I didn't know that going in, so I had it
all flushed and rebuilt.

If your hydraulic backstay has never been serviced, it may need attention.

My Navtec adjuster is probably an older unit than what you have. It came to me
with the boat so I am guessing it is probably around 15 or more years old. It
is an integral unit and the gage and knob for the relief valve are attached on
opposite sides near the base of the square looking cylinder. I think it reads
in psi and its readings correlate quite well at around 800-1200 psi when I
check backstay tension with my Loos gage but my inexpensive Loos gage max’s out
at around 1200 on 9/32 wire so it is not useful for tension comparisons above
that. I have tensioned the backstay incrementally to 3000 lbs according to its
gage but as I said earlier tensions above 1200 psi has no noticeable effect on
pointing ability or boat speed but a slight effect on weather helm and head
stay sag. I spend my cruising time fiddling around with a lot of adjustments
and measurements but I am happy to admit that I am still learning and very
interested in what others have to contribute.

I guess I have been lucky that the hydraulic seals have lasted as long as they
have without problems.

Dwight,

If you Navtec gauge is like mine (in a panel), it probably reads direct
pressure, not the pressure exerted on the backstay. They would be the same if
the piston area was 1 sq. inch, but otherwise the pressure times the piston
area will give you the tension on the backstay.

Dwight,

I replaced mine several years ago. I had the backstay cylinder off the boat
for repair. I needed a new O ring or two. The North loft did the repairs.
It wasn't too terrible on price, but I can't recall what it was. No leaks
since.

I don't think the replacement interval is very frequent, unless the fluid
gets contaminated. Mine was black, milky, and just bad looking. I opened
the ports on the backstay and vang (alternately) and pushed new fluid
through the system. It was very easy. The only hard part is filling the
fluid tank. Mine is tucked up on a shelf in the port cockpit locker with
only a few inches above it to access the fill port.

Re: Stus-List Backstay ram rebuild & fluid

2012-11-27 Thread Alan Bergen
I have a hydraulic backstay and vang, with a unit (I don't know what it's
called) in the cockpit that switches between the two. A year-and-a-half ago,
the unit failed, and I had it and the vang rebuilt by a hydraulic shop
(recommended by Navtec) in Seattle. Lew Townsend did a thorough job, and even
made a new hydraulic line (he noticed it going bad from the picture I sent)
while I waited. I asked him about the hydraulic fluid I was using, and he
recommended I use a different kind. Then he dumped what I had, and gave me
enough to fill the reservoir in my boat. If anyone needs hydraulic work done, I
highly recommend him. (contact info below)
