Thx. The reason I asked is many of us have ran into issues with large
disks (2TB+). You would only have to search back in the archives to find
those details.

I did my RHCE on RHEL5. I can confirm there are some weird bugs in some
system-config scripts. One of them bit me during the exam. :) I didn't
and have never used system-config-services so I can't comment on that one
specifically.

[CentOS] Enbended Perl

2007-08-05 Thread Franklin S Werren
Hi All;

I am looking for a way to install Enbedded Perl on a Blue Quartz CentOS 4
Based server

Any info on how to do it ???

All I have is http://perl.apache.org/embperl/
And no info on installing it on the Apache/2.0.52 (CentOS) Server
Used by BQ Cent OS4

Personally I have never heard of it but I had a request to use it
On one of my production servers...

And since CentOS does *not* charge, one should remember (especially in a
commercial endeavor) to convince TPTB in their company to make a
*generous* contribution to the CentOS project to help the project team
members continue their excellent work.

See http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=23

I too have both installed. Since I'm not subject to confusion due to
large volume operations (although a brain-glitch is certainly possible),
I just set "protect=0" as my default and have priority={10,20, ...} as
appropriate in the various repo files. NP so far. Previously, until sure
I wanted to use priorities, I had "protect=1" and it over-rode
priorities (AFAICT). This would seem to have useful implications.

So I leave both installed.

Scott, do you remember what the system error was at boot?

It may be that config-services turned off an essential system startup
service.

I found 'chkconfig' much more reliable and easy to use on the CLI than
config-services in the GUI.

Also what method did you use to reboot your system after config-services?

At this point it really can be anything, I would start by getting the
latest PERC driver from Dell and installing it, uses dkms to keep it
current on updated kernels. You will need cc, binutils, kernel-devel
installed before hand for it to fully work right on the initial
install.

Should not make a difference, except you will have a hard time getting
the latest bug-fixed and security-fixed versions of the system.

I would look into finding a way to get this puppy to get the latest
updates, either via proxy server or internal update server.

Hi Scott,

If you explain the "basic issues" you are having we might

I have installed Oracle 10g and Veritas Netbackup on CentOS

you are not completely familiar with (on a critical server)

is a recipe

for disaster.

The basic issue I have encountered is, after freshly installing RHEL5
64-bit Server on a Dell Poweredge 2950, everything is fine.
After logging
in for the first time, I configure services as I want via
system-config-services. But after doing so, and rebooting, at
first the
filesystem claims there is a system error and prompts for the root
password for a fsck, or control-D to reboot.

Scott, do you remember what the system error was at boot?

It may be that config-services turned off an essential system startup
service.

I found 'chkconfig' much more reliable and easy to use on the CLI than
config-services in the GUI.

I'll check that out - thanks!

Also what method did you use to reboot your system after config-services?

I forget - either reboot at the command window, or reboot from the gui.
Never a "hard" reboot.

I opt to reboot, and the system then complains of python
errors, but there
are no more system errors. But, when I revisit
system-config-services, I
immediately experience python errors.

Possible file-system corruption in and around where the python libraries
are since they were last used... Maybe due to a dirty shutdown?

I always go for a "software" shutdown where/when possible - never power
cord nor power switch.

To try and potentially help resolve this problem, I recently
updated the
BIOS and some of the firmware. I then performed a fresh
install again.
I then downloaded RH's Enterprise 5 Supplement ISO, along with Dell's
OpenManage ISOs for Enterprise 5. I'm hoping something
among this back
of changes will help solve the python configuration problem.

Did you install the latest dell drivers for your controller (Perc 5/i?),
the drivers for these controllers are updated/fixed frequently.

I let RH install its own drivers. I will probably then simply reinstall
the OS again, this time with linux dd to utilize the Dell PERC drivers.

Unfortunately, I was unable to get the PERC firmware to successfully
update with Dell's utility. I may ask them for a resolution on that,
unless I can overcome it another way.

If not, I may opt to see how well CentOS 5 handles things.

It will unfortunately handle them exactly the way RHEL does. As it is
RHEL...

I'm mostly interested in the PostgreSql and Java pieces.

Of course.

If it comes down to it, I could always place a trouble call
with Dell and
RedHat and see if either of them has a helpful solution.

Did it hang while doing the shutdown that forced you to hit
the power button?

If it doesn't have Internet access, does it have any network
access, cause if DNS isn't working properly and /etc/hosts
isn't fully populated there can be hangs while it timeouts
doing name-lookups and I have had some admins think that
the machine is frozen and do a hard power-off and power-on
then wonder why their file-systems were corrupted.

Linux like any OS has basic drivers to get it up and running, but
those drivers tend to be a little out of date and they could have
some critical issues that appear when run under load.

Best practice is always to install the latest hardware drivers from
the manufacturer after/during install, especially for storage and
network (video for workstations).

Make sure compat-stdc++-33 is installed as the Dell installers use the
older c++ libs.

Making sure the firmware is current is also critical because some of
Dell's initial firmwares have some serious integrity flaws.. :-(

and think it is installed, but

Actually, in this case I picked up 4 decTOPs. The specs say they pull
8W @ 12vDC. That is with the supplied 10Gb 3.5" hard drive and 128Mb

So I am upping the memory on some to 256Mb, and others to 512Mb (max for

and either going with a 10-20Gb 2.5" drive (need an adapter for that),
or two Compact Flash drives: 4Gb memory drive & 4Gb Hitachi MicroDrive.
Add bluetooth, switch to a mini USB keyboard and Bluetooth mouse (would
like a bluetooth keyboard, but too pricy).

Now the pwer supply states 40W @ 12vDC. Can I power three of these from
the one supply along with a monitor:

Are you wanting max power for provisioning purposes? If so, the max
power on the power supply or chassis will give you absolute max. 80% of
that number is what it is rated for on a continuous basis, 100% is for
max burst.

No for UPS purposes. Actually some of these are 'portable' and I want
to size an external battery.

I will be running a number of tests. Max, min, 'typical'.

If you need a more accurate number (as the above is the rated Wattage,
which /will/ be different than actual usage for safety purposes), you
could run multiple of something like this: `dd if=/dev/urandom
of={somefile} bs=1024k count=1024`. Depending on your processor speed,
that won't keep the disks busy all the time which is why I suggested
multiple running at the same time. What that will do is pull 1GB worth
of random data (stresses CPU) and writes it as fast as possible to the
disk. Running a few of those in a loop should give you enough time to
see actual power draw. Shifting bits around in the memory register
probably won't add too much power draw, as it is mostly CPU and chipset
(just CPU if you are using AMD). The RAM stick is fully powered
regardless.

Hope that helps at least a little.

[CentOS] Turning off a notebook's screen

2007-08-05 Thread Robert Moskowitz
My notebook is an HP Compaq nc4010 running current Centos 5.0 with the
Gnome desktop.

I have been having problems with my notebook's screen never really going
off.

I lock my screen and the backlight stays on.

I push the close monitor button, or even close the unit, the backlight
turns off for maybe 10 seconds then turns back on.

Actually I just did a test again, and when I push the notebook closed
button (that little microswitch that gets toggled when the unit is
closed), the monitor turns off completely, then the backlight comes on,
then the screen goes into some sort of barely lit mode (brighter). Even
the attack VGA monitor does the same thing. But at least I can turn
that off independently when I want to lock my system.

Oh, I did not have this problem in Centos 4.x.

I think this is tied into the screensaver function. I have selected
'Blank screen' theme in Preferences > Screensaver.

thanks for any pointers.

[CentOS] New CentOS DNS Server woes

2007-08-05 Thread Ray Leventhal
Hi folks,

I've put my new DNS server in place, told the primary that this IP would
be pulling zones and restarted BIND on the primary.

I configured my named.conf file to pull zones from the primary, started
BIND on the new box. Here's where I get confused

[EMAIL PROTECTED] etc]# /etc/init.d/named status
number of zones: 169
debug level: 0
xfers running: 0
xfers deferred: 0
soa queries in progress: 0
query logging is OFF
recursive clients: 0/1000
tcp clients: 0/100

So the new BIND sees the conf file and recognizes that there are 169
zones (test group) to pull.

nothing comes over. I tailed the /var/log/messages and I see about 169
 of these:

Aug 5 14:10:08 sunspot named[5263]: dumping master file:
/var/named/chroot/var/named/slaves/tmp-sTsIWElBLR: open: file not found

and these

Aug 5 14:10:08 sunspot named[5263]: transfer of 'jemsites.com/IN' from
64.135.16.10#53: failed while receiving responses: file not found

I think this must be a permissions issue. (btw, SELinux is in Permissive
mode at the moment).

TIA for any comments or suggestions.

Since you gave very little info, all I can give you is a very generic answer.
Yes, I might have an idea of the answer, but you need to be more specific
with your question.

RE: [CentOS] CentOS 4 vs 5 for VMware?

2007-08-05 Thread Donald Maner
I compiled my own kernels for c4 and c5 that dropped the HZ down to 100. For
me, it's a big improvement, especially when it comes to keeping the clock
correct in the vm. And yes, performance is slightly better, because the vms
aren't killing the hardware with unnecessary cpu usage trying to process all
those ticks.

Thanks for the kernels. Hopefully they will be eventually added to the
centosplus repos.

Watch out, if you ever use FC then! During my very brief fling with FC6,
I found that system-config-display did not update xorg11.config (that's
not the correct file name), as it claimed to be doing.

As you know, it is always best to either use the GUI tools or do it by
hand. Not good to mix the two methods.

My impression from reading this ML is that you will find CentOS performs
for you just as well as RHEL would and probably you will get better
support, on this ML, than you would from RH for RHEL, unless you are in
the super customer group at RH.

Can you transfer a file over from the server correctly or is the
server denying it to the slaves. what does 'dig @
axfr' give you on the slave server? Remember to change
out the name-of-zone etc with real data fro your server.

Yes, the filename can be relative to the directory mentioned in the
options section or absolute, but either way it has to take the chroot
location into account, so omit the /var/named/chroot part.

It's a cpan module called Embperl. I don't know of any repositories that
package it, but you can either install it straight from cpan:

  perl -MCPAN -e 'install Embperl'

or look at using something like cpan2rpm (http://perl.arix.com/cpan2rpm/)
to package it as an RPM for you.

You can use kickstart to control what packages are installed.

/root/install.log has the details of what packages are installed by
anaconda.
