www.zeescripts.com sells an eBay clone for $57, or a multi-vendor ecommerce
for $197. Both are PHP and MySQL based. It is a one-time fee, and all code
is given, so you can modify it to suit your needs. Several templates,
including responsive templates, are included.

If Jay would host the eBay clone on his servers, I would fork over the $57.
We don't really need a huge following, but it would grow very quickly, once
people from the various forums and lists started telling their members about
it.

Perhaps someone with knowledge in these areas would have the time to look
into this?

Cindy Croxton

[OT] Alternatives to eBay

2016-04-20 Thread Electronics Plus
I have spent over 100 hours looking for viable alternatives to selling
computer stuff. Vintage does not have its own place. Bonanza.com is gaining
popularity, but it is not really IT or electronics oriented. Pricewatch.com
and similar sites only deal in reasonably current equipment. VCF does have a
marketplace section, but (and please don't take offense) it is so
rudimentary, and the listings are so outdated, that is does not seem to be
of much use. How do you find what is still available? True auction or
ecommerce software would eliminate stale WTB and WTS listings. There are
many free places to send XML product lists to be added to their comparison
shopping engines, and all of those are very well indexed by Google. If you
make it easy for people to see that it is an open place to buy and sell, 1
page registration, etc., then it will probably grow quite well. If you
really want it to grow, you can get free press releases with many of the
computer related online magazines and communities. If you don't try it, you
will never know J

Thoughts?

[IC] Mulri-Vendor Marketplace

2016-05-15 Thread Electronics Plus
I am considering getting a multi-vendor marketplace setup. Right now I am
looking for interested people who want to sell a few (or a lot) of vintage
computer items and peripherals, like keyboards. The focus would be on
vintage, although if you have some current things, those would be allowed
too. I want to enable people from all over the world to list their items and
collect payment without all the hassles of setting up an ecommerce site, and
without the huge fees of eBay. Each seller would set their own shipping
rates and countries they will ship to. Payments would go to the seller. The
startup cost for this is about $1600, which I can pay, but in return for
setting everything up and arranging the hosting, etc,. I would ask a small
percentage (maybe 5%) to help defray the costs.
This is the package I am looking at
<http://www.ixxocart.com/ixxo-multi-vendor>
http://www.ixxocart.com/ixxo-multi-vendor.
Please let me know your thoughts.

The objective is to have one central place where people all over the world
can offer others their surplus gear. This is NOT designed to be a
marketplace for current items.

Without wanting to sound negative on this I am not sure what is in it for
the buyers? Most sellers tend to oversell their vintage equipment (we have
all seen phrases like "worked 30 years ago selling as is", "like new but
untested", etc. etc.). Vintage packing also requires expertise and hefty
costs something sellers usually don't want to undertake (I've lost count of
how many broken monitors I have received). Yes they could pass the cost on
to the buyer but when you are already asking $300 for a run of the mill IBM
5150 you are going to be hard pressed to find someone who is also willing to
fork over another $100 to ship it.

Those "hassles" you refer to help buyers feel safe in bidding and buying on
eBay and probably are essential in some of the high crazy final auction
prices you see. Unless you plan to offset those protections somehow (e.g.
all items must start at $0.99 auction and bidding increments are locked at
$0.25, etc, etc) I don't see buyers rushing to pay large sums of cold hard
cash to strangers half a world away without guarantees that are backed by
the auction site.

Even for the sellers I am not seeing the big draw eBay charges a 10% fee and
you want to charge %5. If they are accepting PP for payments well then the
buyers have a six month return period and many of the same protections, I
mean hassles, as eBay.

If people really just want to sell (and not think they have hit the jack pot
because they have some tattered boxed non-working monochrome monitor) then
the marketplace on the VCF is great. No fees and no headaches for the
sellers and for the buyers reasonable to low prices (yeah no one is paying a
$1000 for a KB on the marketplace) which is why most sellers don't like it.

I would love to see a specialized vintage bazaar where you can find what you
want at a reasonable price from trusted sources but the reality is that will
never happen in e-commerce. For better and worse eBay has spoiled us and
created certain expectation. The only way we could ever have a decent
vintage exchange would be to have a swap meet which is of course its own
logical nightmare (not to mention the massive over head costs).

Just my two worthless cents...

-Ali

My experience is that eBay charges actually amount to about 38% of the final
sell price. They actually charge a percentage of the shipping fees too, not
to mention fees for pictures, and anything else they can think of. It has
been years since I sold much on eBay, but the experience really soured me.

So far I am only asking people on a couple of trusted lists if they want to
join. Sure eBay has tons of buyers, but if we get participants from all over
the world to sell, then we will have lots of buyers too. Nothing is huge
immediately; it takes time to grow. Rules can always be set for returns, and
if a sellers is worth his salt, he knows how to pack. That being said, I
have been packing things for over 20 years, and UPS still manages to smash
or lose some things. That is just the way it goes.

My thought was that it would be a great thing to have a vintage computer
marketplace, one dedicated spot for items dedicated to old computers and
related items, without having to sort through tons of unrelated stuff. How
many times have you looked up 720K diskettes, and found recipes or something
instead? What is to guarantee that an eBay seller knows what he is doing?

Also, this is a fixed price system, not an auction. I looked at multi-seller
auctions, and most of them fell short in several areas, or else they were
about $10K or more to buy. That is beyond my means. The 5% is just to defray
costs. I am not looking at making money off other sellers. Any effort like
this is a lot of work. People mentioned that they would like to see a
centralized selling system, and I am willing to make the leap, if people
want to join me.

So somewhat OT - I've setup an 8 year old w/ an IBM PC XT w/ CGA. To say he
is less than impressed is understating things :). However, I am determined
that he will learn basic computer terminology, architecture, history (i.e.
how we got here) and at least get his feet wet with programming by learning
BASIC this summer.

Apparently teaching is not my strong suite - while I can talk about a larger
number of the above topics, especially at his level, organizing them in a
way to make sense is the problem. I was wondering if anyone could recommend
a good book that gets the basic stuff out of the way (what is the CPU,
memory, storage, etc. what are different the parts called, etc.) and maybe
another one that teaches an intro to BASIC written for a very young reader?
It would be nice if the book is in the PD or at least available as a PDF
that way he can read it on his Kindle. However, I am not averse to buying a
physical new (or used book) either.

Thanks.

Okay, time for a big gripe about the Model M--the *&^!~ "feet" that can
be snapped out to raise the top a bit. They get old and brittle and
the usual solvent cement (methylene dichloride) doesn't touch it.

I much prefer the supports on the Model F, but you can't have everything.

Has anyone located a source for these things. Maybe 3D printing?

Yeah, I think all Apple keyboards /up until/ the Extended II had keyswitches --
then they switched to cheaper ones, like most of the industry.

Interesting -- I didn't know the SNES had a 65816!

I've not touched a //GS since they were new, but yes, they were lovely
machines. Even if somewhat crippled -- they ran the 65816 at about 2.something
MHz, when even the early ones could do circa 10-12 MHz and later ones 20-30MHz,
AIUI.

There are alleged technical reasons, but the main one, I think, and the reason
for the machine's demise, is that it just competed with the Mac too much.

The IIgs came out in 1986, the Mac II in 1987. So when the IIgs shipped, there
were no colour-capable Macs (and their sound wasn't that impressive either).
The IIgs looked like a plausible rival, and could have been expanded into an
Amiga-alike fairly readily -- and thus threaten the still-new Macintosh.

Damned shame, really.

There is a pallet of these in St. Louis, MO, going for scrap prices. Some
are more recent. If anyone is interested, I can get you contact info. He
will sell the pallet, but not by the piece. Units are dirty, untested, may
be incomplete, etc. I am not affiliated with the seller in any way.

My teetering pile of junk^W Fine Legacy Equipment that requires some TLC
includes a dead Unicomp Model M where some of the legends have clearly worn
away. The user admits to putting it through the dishwasher at least twice,
having apparently decided it was dishwashable because the first time worked.

Apart from the obvious reason that I just can't be arsed, the main stumbling
block on the repair is the recessed bolts holding it together and me not
having a suitable thin-walled driver to turn them. It's probably a simple
job once I'm actually in.

media and software

2016-06-16 Thread Electronics Plus
I am going back to Dallas next week to sort 2 pallets of media and software.

The age runs from reels of tape (9 track? Dated 1989 and earlier) to LTO4.

Software, there are a LOT of MS Developer CDs from 2011 and much earlier,
Xilinx CDs, AIX CDs, Solaris CDs (the earliest I noticed off the bat was
version 6) and a lot of Dell server implementation disks. Also some things
on cassette tapes.

I need to know what is wanted. After next week it goes in the dumpster.

No one has asked for them yet. Some were in very poor shape, broken reels with
tape falling off, so I discarded those. On others the reels are intact and the
tape has not been exposed. Any info on these is supposed to be scrubbed, since
the backups contain proprietary info.

old friend is slimming down the warehouse

2016-06-21 Thread Electronics Plus
An old friend of mine in GA is slimming down his warehouse. I know a long
time ago people sent me some pics and lists of things wanted, but that was a
long time ago. If you are looking for old servers, big blue IBM things, DEC
stuff, etc., please take a few minutes to send the following info to
oldthingswanted...@gmail.com

The name of the item

A short description

A link to a pic, or attach a pic

What you want to pay for it

The expected condition (tested, old and dirty is fine, etc.)

His health is not the best, but he wants this stuff to go to people who will
appreciate it, rather than by the pound.

He will do his best to answer everyone.

Inventory ranges from old typewriters to mainframes, and everything in
between.

He does not have a list. Warehouse is about 50k sq feet, and was started in the

Like I said, his health is not good, but he wants to find a good home for these.
If sending lists does not work, I can ask him to pick some things out and send

He does not have pricing in mind, so please be fair when you ask or offer.

Terminals have reached the other side of the bathtub curve, and keyboard prices

One of them was literally filled with sawdust, another covered in machine oil

Cindy - thanks for your post.

I have seen on occasion a past commercial seller (not here any longer) not fit

You're a perfect model of how a commercial seller can be a fantastic

the value of old test and repair equipment

2016-07-28 Thread Electronics Plus
I had to pass up a large qty of old test equip at the recycler last time
because they wanted too much for it. For instance, an old HP signal
generator would have cost me $25, with no way to test it, and no guarantees
that it was complete or working. So my question is, does as-is old test and
repair equip that won't be particularly cheap have interest to you guys?

Well, I find them helpful as well, like the guys who have reversed-engineered
the Wyse keyboard protocol and built keyboard adapters.

All I've noticed is you don't see terminals with keyboards any more, especially
ones with ALPS or Cherry keyswitches, and while you see lots of listings for
Wyse keyboards because of the demand for the keyswitches, you see almost none
for Televideo and especially Qume.

Since they are all out of production now, it will just end up in the future
that you'll just use whatever PS/2 or USB keyboard you can find with an adapter
to the original protocol.

Atlanta warehouse

2016-08-13 Thread Electronics Plus
I can see that one day's notice did not do much good. I am sorry, but
Atlanta is over 1500 miles from home for me, and I usually do not get much
notice. Next time I will try to give at least a week notice.

There can be absolutely no viewing on the weekends. That is out of the
question for him.

It is MUCH easier for him if I am there when people want to come and
scrounge. He is so busy, and his warehouse manager is usually tied up with
orders, and for safety reasons they can't just turn people loose. I am
usually there every couple of months.

Now that we have established that people will be allowed to come and choose
things, he is having the warehouse guys sort things into categories. Things
he wants to keep, and those he is willing to part with. Right now they are
scrapping all the HP 700/96, and the Wyse 60s. I asked him to hold onto a
dozen or so working Wyse 60s with keyboards for about 30 days. He will ship
them. Tested and working with complete tested keyboard he wants $80 per set
plus shipping.

The Teletype keyboard and the small keyboard have been sold. The Lear
terminal and the Burroughs are for sale, but not cheap. The Lear has been
repaired and is working. The Burroughs keyboard he wants $250 for. He did
not specify a price for the Lear, but you can always make a good offer.

Likewise, I'm looking for a couple of AT&T/Teletype keyboards for my 5620/Blit
and my 730+. They do _not_ have a round DIN plug, which distinguishes them
from 98% of what's out there. They have an 8p8c connector ("RJ-45").

There are several matching keyboards with different numbers of keys (~98-103).
56K-341-AAN is one part number. Keyboards that will work are the same ones
used on the AT&T 4410 and Teletype 5410 terminal.

I'm also seeing part numbers in the technical drawings
(http://www.brouhaha.com/~eric/retrocomputing/att/5620/att5620_eng.pdf
pp 87-95) like:
 56K224
 56K229
 56K230
 410896
 410967

It appears to have 6 of the 8 pins in use - serial in, serial out,
+5V, -12V, signal GND, and frame GND (it makes its own -5V for the MCU
from a zener diode on the -12V line). All of this plus the 1.8432MHz crystal,
suggest to me a simple async protocol. This would make a keyboard emulator
simple to construct once someone has sniffed the protocol.

One is good. Two is better.

Thanks,

-ethan

RE: 50 yrs. of Star Trek!

2016-09-08 Thread Electronics Plus

My physician uses a Palm Pilot type device specifically to look up medication
doses and drug interactions. He knows the fellow who wrote the program, who had
the device that was used in sick bay in mind when he wrote it. The telemetry
unit I wore in the hospital last week is another take off on the same idea.
Portable insulin pumps that constantly measure your glucose levels and deliver
insulin accordingly are another. Walkie-talkies and cell phones, microwave
ovens, weighted and magnetic boots, transponders that translate (cell phone
apps) and find your companions (GPS), officers of all genders and varying
races...this list goes on. I am still waiting for the teleportation; that would
be my dream! Then again, it would also be nice to come home at the end of the
day and tell the food production unit on the wall exactly what I want for
dinner, and a few minutes later it is delivered.

Does anyone here have a good high res pic of these 2 complete keyboards, so

No no no -- hang on.

Classic MacOS was appallingly vulnerable. It had no user-account security at
all, and every disk had a tiny bit of code read and executed when it was
mounted, AIUI, to customise the icon etc.

Personal computer viruses more or less originated on the classic Mac.

But OS X is effectively immune to all of them, and AFAIK there are no true
viruses for OS X even now. But you need to use a narrow strict definition.
There are many Trojans, but they need to social-engineer or trick the user into
agreeing, clicking OK and entering a password.
That's not a virus if it requires user interaction to propagate.

Ditto there are sploits and worms that attack OS X servers, but since OS X
servers are fairly rare, so are the sploits. And OS X has a much-modified
FreeBSD userland underneath it, and some of those componets are vulnerable too.

So it's a bit of a hair-splitting argument.

What it is _not_ is plain marketing lies, such as "Windows NT is a microkernel".

I still have sealed packs of installation software for very early laptops with
DOS. Some of them probably have the Stoned virus on them. I used to have
factory original CD install disks from Zip drives, but I threw them all out,
because they were all infected with viruses. Iomega was kind enough to send me
clean install disks, after I mailed them back one of the infected disks. That
prompted a huge recall, back in the 90s. I remember seeing web screens in the
early 2000s from viruses; one was a picture of Zeus holding a lightning bolt
with the caption "Watch out for Zeus, he will kick your ass!" Another was a
picture of the old Kilroy was here, but had the caption of Kiljoy was here.
Kiljoy would stay on for about 5 seconds, and then gradually all the network
services would be stopped and then deleted from the computer.

A treasure trove in Dallas

If you live in the DFW area, and have a truck and a strong back, there are
some VERY interesting items.

A DEC cabinet taller than I am, with a front panel of switches. I asked him
if the panel was rust or orange, but he said he thought it was dark, like
brown. The cabinet was backwards, and there was too much stuff in the way to
turn it around.

3 Sun cabinets full of stuff, and a SparcStation 20.

Several (at least 4) IBM server cabinets. Not the blue 6 foot kind; these
are abt waist high.

A cabinet about waist high the said Computer Control (I think) with switches
and LEDs. Too heavy to move into the light to take pics.

A complete Data Products B300 line printer.

If you are interested in these, send me an email, and I will give you the
contact info.

The warehouse is very dirty, and the aisles are very small. A large person

Do you want complete terminals and keyboards? The reason they like the

How can you ask $75 for an untested Osborne keyboard?

How would you suggest I test it, since I don't have the computer? These almost
NEVER show up at the recyclers anymore. Sorry if the price offends you. What do
you think it is worth?

More old stuff incoming

2018-12-18 Thread Electronics Plus via cctalk
I talked to a recycler today, who said he told his workers to throw out 2000
Model F keyboards last week, but he doubts they did it.

I also asked him about 8088, 2086, and 386 computers. He said they go
straight to the grinder. I told him I will buy them.

Then an HP dealer contacted me, wants to know if I buy old HP stuff. I told
him Apollo and earlier. Let me know if there is something specific HP you
want.

Old HP stuff

2018-12-19 Thread Electronics Plus via cctalk
Thanks for all the replies! Based on the responses I got, this is the
specific request list that I just emailed him:

anything HP 1000 related is interesting. HP 2100, HP 21MX 2113 2117,
A-Series A400 A600 A700 A900 A990, etc.

are all 21MX/2100-series:

HP 12908A Writable Control Store Interface Kit (PCA 12908-60002) HP 12908B
Writable Control Store Interface Kit (PCA 12908-60006) HP 12908-60003 Jumper

Jumper Board Assembly

HP 12978A Writable Control Store (PCA 12978-60006) HP 12978-60006 Jumper
Cable Assembly

HP 02100-60018 Cable Assembly (need two!) HP 02100-60052 Connector Assembly

an HP HIL mouse (so not PS/2), preferably 3-button

HP apollo 735/125 power supply part # 0950-2081 (Astec). It comes from a
workstation, A2608A or A2841A

HP 9000, whether it's the /200, /300, /400, /700, or /800 series

The prices I see for this equipment online are stiff! May I assume (and yes,
I know what that spells) that you guys are looking for machines in the sub
$200 class, not $2000 like some sites have posted? Equipment from the
recycler is so much cheaper, but strictly as-is.

I am somewhat surprised to learn that any commercially available general
purpose computer had an 8186 CPU. I've only seen it in purpose built
equipment. The last one I saw was in a mobile X-Ray or CT machine in
the late '90s.

I would love some confirmation on the CPU. (I'll look it up in a bit.)

That would mean that IBM PS/2s had every major class of x86 CPU between
the 8086 (or was it 8088, which is still in the 8x86 family) and the
Pentium.

IMHO that's impressive.

I don't send newsletters, or bother people in any way. I hate getting spam.
I encourage people to use the RSS feeds https://elecshopper.com/rss/
If you like, you can change the spreadsheet to say "Items Wanted" instead of
"HP Items Wanted" and change the column headers accordingly.
Whatever you guys are looking for, I am willing to try and hunt.

I may be odd, but I'd be interested in Cindy / Electronics Plus
leveraging their existing mailing list.

Assuming that it's Mailman (I don't remember) I'd be curious to see
categories that are brand names, and possibly sub-categories that are
model lines.

That way people could subscribe to the list and pick the categories they
are interested in receiving announcements to.

I think it would also give Cindy / Electronics Plus some indication of
what brand / model like people are interested in.

Just a thought. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Public buy/sell/trade

2018-12-21 Thread Electronics Plus via cctalk
For months I have been trying to implement a "multi-vendor marketplace".
Without a budget, it is almost impossible. There is a free software,
Sellacious, which runs off Joomla. Out of the box, it does not work. It has
MAJOR security holes. However, it was the ONLY one I could find where more than
one seller could sell the same product. Suppose 5 people have 1391401
keyboards. In almost every other system, you would have 5 separate listings. I
wanted something more like Amazon, where the item is listed ONCE, and then each
seller can set his price and a description of the condition, etc.

I am most familiar with Magento, which is what I use. There is a multi-vendor
add-on available, but the base package is $399, and then you go up from there
with features, like each seller being able to input his own shipping
methods/rates and payment methods.

Deskthority donated the space for such a market, and offered to host it, but no
one has the time to update/maintain it. If it were Magento, I would do it, but
I don't have $400+ to invest in the extra software (basic Magento CE is free).

If someone wants to donate the funds, or write a good working module for
Magento multi-vendor, I will be happy to set it up an maintain it.

The advantages to Magento are many, but it has a few drawbacks too. You can do
almost anything with it, but it can be a little slow. The community is very
active.

There are numerous tiny sites for buying and selling that are not very active
anymore, and most use a PHP BB type system, which will not let you list and buy
like a true ecommerce does. It also does not tell you when something is out of
stock, or allow you to add it to a wishlist.

Is there really a dearth of satisfactory locations for people to swap /
trade / buy / sell computer equipment?

I've not seriously looked. But I feel like this should have been solved
already. Maybe it has an the typical places are running people off or
otherwise unappealing.

What would people want in such a swap-n-shop?

In some ways it's a basic inventory management system, with the ability
for people to add their own listings.

I feel like the community could likely benefit from an associated forum
to discuss things without bogging down the business transactions.

I would want it easy to search and find things, or possibly even
register as being interested in being notified when someone lists
something for sale in the future.

PS/1 monitor.
Terminals included Harris, a huge Televideo, a 950 keyboard, VT410 and VT420
terminals, various IBM terminals.
There are a qty of nice condition dot matrix printers.
There is an HP plotter, desktop style, about 2-3 feet long, in good shape.
There are large fixed freq monitors with 3 or 5 BNC on the back.
There are many 8088 to PIII computers, most with RAM and hdd, in decent
shape.
There are many small "pizza box" style HP machines, including a 150, if no
one claimed it.
For some pics, please follow the thread on DT from those who attended. I was
not able to upload anything while I was there.

RE: Hewlett-Packard 3000, 9000, Itanium (HP-UX & MPE/iX) Servers, Storage Arrays, Replacement Parts, Maintenance, & Disaster back-ups

2019-01-22 Thread Electronics Plus via cctalk

I agree that the general introductory blast post was a bit over the top. But I
don't think it's been posted here regularly, and vendors that obviously
contribute here get a little leeway (Cindy). I figure some may not be familiar
with Cypress/Dougherty systems so one intro email per six months or year
doesn't bug me. More often will draw some ire ;) If Dougherty Systems wants to
participate in this mailing list, there needs to be some 'collector friendly'
value, it's a two way street. I suggest that Jeff @ Cypress scan maybe a year
of past postings by Cindy @ Electronics Plus, and emulate.

Wow! I feel honored! Jesse at Cypress is actually not a bad guy. Been around a
long time, but you are right, they ARE high dollar.

I am SO sorry that I could not help more at the Houston haul. I have severe
asthma, and it got out of control, so I had to leave. The guy has a TON
(literally) of vintage stuff, but he is an ebay guy, and is not willing to part
with stuff cheap. One guy drove 15 hours to get there, and did not take home
what he wanted, because the guy would not budge on prices.

If you want the seller's cell phone to try and make decent offers for some of
the stuff in pictures, send me an email. He charged me $400 for 1 Mac 512K, 4
TI/99, and a few old TRS 80 CoCo type systems. I am not going back again, sorry.
