I don't know the meaning of 'plughw'.

I tried 'mpg321 -o alsa09 -a plughw:0 some.mpg'

|...
| MPEG 1.0 layer III, 160 kbit/s, 44100 Hz joint-stereo
| Can't find a suitable libao driver. (Is device in use?)
| Segmentation Fault

My mpg321 version is 0.2.9 and 'libao' was installed.

'ldd /usr/bin/mpg321'

libz.so.1 => /usr/lib/libz.so.1 (0x4002b000)
libao.so.2 => /usr/lib/libao.so.2 (0x40039000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x4003e000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/i686/libc.so.6 (0x40042000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/i686/libpthread.so.0 (0x4017e000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x4000)

What can I do?

[Alsa-user] Can't Access ALSA Mixer

2003-01-12 Thread Micah Haber

I can't access the ALSA mixer.  I type in "alsamixer" in the
alsa-utils-0.9.0rc6/alsamixer dir, but I get
"alsamixer: command not found" from the Bash shell.  The
contents of the alsa-utils-0.9.0rc6/alsamixer dir are "alsamixer.1,"
"alsamixer.c,"
"Makefile.am," "Makefile.in," and "README."  Can
anyone help me with this?  Thanks.

About everyone can help you, but it will be better for you if we didn't. You
will be happier if you find the answer to your problem yourself. Reading the
man page for bash will be a good start, though it has a lot of information
that might be a little hard to understand. Try to make most of it. Search
for PATH, COMMAND EXECUTION ... well that ought to do it. If it wasn't good
enough then start off at

http://www.northernjourney.com/opensource/newbies/

and read, read... Part 4 would be of interest in your case, though you
wouldn't be sorry if you read it all.

Did you install the utilities? Try the which command to see if it exists in a path.

And what does "restart" mean?

It's all up to your card I think. Creative Live cards can do it for what I
know. I don't know about others.

[Alsa-user] Configuring ALSA problem [not hardware]

2003-01-12 Thread Steven Feil
I have been unable to any of the utilities included in alsa-utils
including amixer alsamixer aplay for the last several releases of ALSA
0.9.0X versions. Each time, I have had very similar failures. I will
describe my encountered using the newly released ALSA 0.9.0rc6
version.

I was able to compile and install alsa-driver and alsa-lib however I
was not able to compile the complete alsa-utils. The build process did
complete the building of amixer alsamixer and alsactl however the
process failed while building play. The error list included at bottom
of post. During previous versions of ALSA I was able to compile aplay,
however I was still never able to use it.

I build and installed the libraries using the buildrpm script, which
worked very well. For my system only RPM controlled files are allowed
in /usr/lib/ other libs belong in /usr/local/lib .

For this test I loaded the snd-dummy drivers into the kernel. When I
use the snd-trident drivers I get the same results. I'm using the
dummy drivers to eliminate the possibility that I am running into a
hardware configuration problem.

Here are my results

[Alsa-user] ALSA setup ... redux

2003-01-12 Thread cg
Hello all,

I posted an inquiry a few days ago - without response. It was about
ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/pci/cs46xx/cs46xx_lib.c:464: cs46xx: failure
waiting for FIFO command to complete

ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/pci/cs46xx/cs46xx_lib.c:163: AC'97 read problem
(ACSTS_VSTS), codec_index 1, reg = 0x0
errors on a Debian installation.

I guess that either the solution to my impasse is so embarrassingly
obvious to everyone but me that delicacy forbids a response ... or that
no one really knows what is going on and that I've stumbled into a
genuine null area.

May I request that in the first case please point things out to me in
the kindergarten fashion they deserve or, in the second, please hazard
either a guess or a direction for me to further search.

Thanks for the attention.

Best,

Chris

[Alsa-user] Problem reporting howto/script

Is anyone aware of a HOWTO or shell script to assist
in reporting problems for ALSA related issues ?

If not, anyone interested in co-crafting such a beast ?

Re: [Alsa-user] Problem reporting howto/script

2003-01-12 Thread R Parker
Hi Mark,

There's a bug reporting script for Ardour, titled bug.
It's in the Ardour CVS. I'm guessing it's worth a look
and that you'd be able to save some time by modifying
it. Ardour uses the GNU licenses, even so it'd
probably be appropriate to ask Paul Davis about using
it if you find it worth modifying.

The script inventories the existence of hardware
types, audio card, hard drives, and the configuration
of environment. It includes 'mail to'.

It's designed so the report will be entered into a
database, bugzilla I think. This work hasn't been
completed.
