It's just low speed data, not security cams or stuff like that? Does your house
have vinyl or wood siding? And a WiFi mesh system? You might get away with a
2.4 outdoor radio linked to the house WiFi, or a mesh unit in a window. Or a

Re: [AFMUG] Starlink says gigabit speeds coming

2024-10-15 Thread Ken Hohhof
Musk does tend to be a “fabulist”. SpaceX however has a track record of mostly
doing what they promise, including with Starlink. I have to admit I was
impressed with how transparent they were with customers during beta and when
they had just a couple hundred sats about dropouts, about what happens during
peak times, an app to see if you had enough open sky, putting people on the
waitlist until they had capacity, etc.

The industry in general has a problem with confusing total capacity with
throughput per subscriber, but I actually don’t hear bad things from people
who’ve gotten Starlink.

It does sound like they’re talking about a new satellite design, and he didn’t
say anything about timeframe. Or whether you would also need a new Starlink
terminal.

Re: [AFMUG] Extending home network

2024-10-15 Thread Robert
Tranzeo, what a blast from the past.   First radios I bought that I
didn't have to make stuff myself.   I loved the way that you could hang
a couple next to each other without cross interference.   I so wished
they would have implemented 5 and 10 mhz channels to get away from all
the 802.11 stuff that started to cause such a mess.   First time I took
one apart I was amazed at the work that must have gone into all that
foil.   I started to put ubiquiti boards in them to get my 5 and 10mhz
channels...
