Re: [AFMUG] DFS Hits El Paso Area

Some devices if you factory default them you can pick a different country on
first bootup. I knew a guy who used to set all of his Ubiquiti stuff to “Hong
Kong” so he could avoid power and DFS rules in 5.2-5.6ghz.
I am not recommending this course of action, and I would personally not be
comfortable with the liability (and bad neighborliness) that would come with
that, but it’s definitely a thing people do.

my company is doing overnight wireless network monitoring and proactive
channel changes for a number of WISPs
across the U.S

I can say the whole state of Texas and L.A CA are the 2 worst areas I have
seen DFS hits

aside from military bases ducting also seems to affect it along with
weather stations

you can see a ducting radar here https://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html

[AFMUG] 3 Sectors posing as Omni

2022-03-16 Thread David Sovereen via AF
I could have sworn that a few years ago, I saw a rather fat Omni that was
really 3 120-degree sectors in an omni form-factor.

I would like to put one up to save on some tower rent cost, but am not finding
any.

Does anyone else know where to find such a thing?

Thanks,

I know Laird used to make one, but it was 3 single-pol 120* sectors in the
omni-style radome.

You could probably make your own with 3~4 UI LiteAP-GPS units and some
large diameter PVC pipe if you really wanted to. I'm not sure it would
work very well though.

Any dual slant omni is really just an array of sectors. You can see it in
the polar radiation pattern.

[AFMUG] Small dual splice case

2022-03-16 Thread Steve Jones
I have some locations I need to extend our Aviat fiber. Im having trouble
finding a small splice case from legitimate vendors. I find weird chinese
ones, but I dont know the product would even ship.
I just need to splice the two, one splice will sit behind a fixed ladder so
its only got like 3 inches clearance.

What kind of fiber and splice?
Doesn’t sound like you actually need a true splice case, just something to
protect it. Anything will work.
There are some small puck type splice cases that are nice. Not sure where we
get them.
Could use just a splice tray. Perhaps something like this:

Yeah that’s the one I was thinking of. Though the LCC from your first link
would also take OSP cables. So maybe more versatile if we don’t know what kind
of cable we’re getting into.

Re: [AFMUG] Small dual splice case

2022-03-16 Thread dmmoffett
I forgot to ask if this was indoors. Every link you’ve seen so far is an
outdoor case. They will work indoors just the same, and the DTC I believe has
a couple of mounting holes to screw it to a wall. DTC also has a snap on lid
which you could pry off while reaching through the ladder.

For indoor cases we usually get them from FIS. A billion options there, but
most of them have a swing open front door which will be an issue with a ladder
3” in front of it. Might just as well stick with the Coyote DTC with the pry
off lid.

Ok, so it says the monitor port gives you an x% split (from 1%-5%) of the light
on each wavelength. But what could I connect to the monitor port if I wanted
to be able to remotely track received signal level on each wavelength?

Re: [AFMUG] Small dual splice case

2022-03-16 Thread dmmoffett
I don’t know what that looks like.

Coyote DTC includes grommets for the flat oval drop cable, but there are
optional grommets for round cable, but being intended for service drop cable it
has a pretty small maximum diameter.

https://preformed.com/images/pdfs/Communications/Fiber_Networks/Coyote_Fiber_Optic_Closures/Coyote_DTC/COYOTE_DTC_Pages_from_CO-CA-1004-16_Fiber_Optics_catalog-2.pdf

Check the second page in that PDF and see if one of the optional grommet kits
will match the diameter of your cable.

Might just as well stick with the Coyote DTC with the pry
off lid.

I have some locations I need to extend our Aviat fiber. Im having trouble
finding a small splice case from legitimate vendors. I find weird chinese ones,
but I dont know the product would even ship.

I just need to splice the two, one splice will sit behind a fixed ladder so its
only got like 3 inches clearance.

Speaking of TI, many moons ago we set up some temporary 5GHz video links
using Trango radios for a TxDOT project in Dallas area...some of the
cameras and radios were installed on roof of TI building...as we were
escorted up the stairs by security, one of our tower guys called me on my
Engenius 900MHz cordless phone to say he was ready to align...the security
guard was surprised because he said the building was RF secure and they
blocked cellphones..
He asked to borrow it so they could check it out...lol..
Apparently the 1 watt and FHSS modulation used by these was not something
they were prepared for!!
We had a lot of fun with those phones..true full duplex and crystal clear..

Ok, so it says the monitor port gives you an x% split (from 1%-5%) of the light
on each wavelength. But what could I connect to the monitor port if I wanted
to be able to remotely track received signal level on each wavelength?

Yes. Even passive gear can have a monitor port.

When people sell wavelengths as a service, how do you monitor that? Is there
something like a “managed” mux that lets you see light levels on each

Speaking of TI, many moons ago we set up some temporary 5GHz video links
using Trango radios for a TxDOT project in Dallas area...some of the cameras
and radios were installed on roof of TI building...as we were escorted up the
stairs by security, one of our tower guys called me on my Engenius 900MHz
cordless phone to say he was ready to align...the security guard was surprised
because he said the building was RF secure and they blocked cellphones..

He asked to borrow it so they could check it out...lol..

Apparently the 1 watt and FHSS modulation used by these was not something
they were prepared for!!

We had a lot of fun with those phones..true full duplex and crystal clear..

Why not just replace the cable with the correct length? you can use the FS
